WOW. Exceeded expectations. Expensive, but delicious. Redeeming a gift card helped, LOL. But the 2 of us were blown away - our server John was professional and jovial. Great sense of humor. My Manhattan served up was in a very generous and elegant martini glass. We skipped salads, and both had the filet, med rare - cooked to perfection, deliciously seasoned and topped with bleu cheese... accompanied by potatoes in a balsamic glaze - and we added sides of b.sprouts & creamed spinach. We got the sweetest server who made sure our party was well taken care of. She helped us take photos and even gave us a dessert on the house (we were celebrating a graduation). We made a reservation for opening at 5 pm, and there were already a lot of people waiting to get seated. The restaurant was beautiful inside, with a lot of character and decoration. Appetizers: The wagyu carpaccio was surprisingly refreshing--it tasted like Vietnamese pho with fresh herbs. The coconut curry mussels were delicious - each mussel was plump and juicy. The sauce was perfect to mop up with the toasted bread. We got a side of asparagus on top of some crumbled cheese. We also ordered truffled fries (yum!), at first they gave us the wrong order, but later on apologized and added the right order (not complaining about free fries!) Main: The Tomahawk steak with bone marrow--this one was cooked true to medium rare and was good. The bone marrow was so-so, there was barely anything on there. It can easily feed 3-4 people. The bone-in pork chop was pretty good, it was cooked well with bursting flavors. The lamb pappardelle was yummy as well. The braised lamb was succulent. The noodles were too al dente for me. I really wanted to like this place. After all the hype, I wanted a delicious steak and directed my group to meat and potatoes. So, starting from the hostess, she was amazing. Super friendly, super accommodating and was a friendly greeting when we walked in. Then we get to our server. His personality was a bit dry. Not really personable and therefore came off a Lil unfriendly, but I don't believe its an intentional unfriendly, just a lil off...... Getting to the bar first. My cocktail , a titos lemon drop, was done well. A little on the bitter side, but wasn't bad. My friends gold rush, not so much. It had what seemed to be eggwhites as a foam on top. And some bitters. A gold rush (1 part whiskey- 1 part fresh lemon juice and topped with either honey syrup or agave syrup or a deep amber agave) even if it were topped with simple syrup, it would be more like the recipe.) The rest of our party ordered whiskey neats. Pour was typical ratio and to the point. Now for the food. The Parker rolls were super salty, almost inedible salty and the butter came out In a super solid, almost frozen, butter disk. For me, steak houses usually know to have a somewhat softened butter for the clientele to have ease. Especially when serving hot Parker rolls. The ceaser salad was actually the best thing we had, and it wasnt the best ceaser I've ever eaten Now for the steaks......... Disappointed!!!!! The new york, served already sliced but is drowning in a demi sauce that makes it almost inedible. Not enough seasoning ,tastes like it wasnt even salted for cooking. The demi was so over powering i couldnt even taste the meat. I forced myself to eat the $76 sauce dish. The pave potatoes was described so deliciously, epic fail. It looks like a deep fried French toast stick. It does have salt and would be better if maybe served in a different style. It really isnt what is described. Not horrible, but not great. The filet mignon, again, tastes like it wasn't seasoned before cooking and is served drowning in a mushroom sauce. For a place called meat and potatoes, they sure dont like to showcase the meat. It shoukd be called sauce and potatoe accents...... the mashed potatoes are a level almost being soupy. Two of our table got the mashed potatoes and it was so soupy it was like eating cream of wheat. Extra creamy and buttery yes, but not the best mashed potatoes. And actually borderline not being able to be called mashed versus creamed. I had to ask for the salt and pepper and im a person who doesnt usually add any salt. I can never have enough pepper, but salt, I usually dont need if seasoned well. I found myself salting repeatedly and over everything. The Parker rolls had the salt they forgot dor the steaks....... The corn succatash was the best thing on the plate and again, it was the best corn succatash I've ever had. Overall, I wish I could have given this place a great review, but I actually felt robbed when I got my bill. $120 for sauce and afterward, I just felt unsatisfied and the sauce flavor lingered. Im hoping they can learn to highlight their namesake. If you call yourself meat and potatoes, it should be about quality, we'll flavored meat dishes and the same for the potatoes dishes. Visited again over the holidays - this place is a must-stop for us when we visit Pittsburgh. Excellent food and drink offerings including high-end cocktails and delicious steaks, the menu rotates. Therefore, I like to wrap my barbecue in vegetables before eating it, which balances the flavor and creates a fusion of wild game and forest. Visited my friend who lives in Pittsburgh and we were going to a show at Heinz Hall. She recommended we go here and she was not wrong. Really great menu and cool ambiance inside. I had the beef carpaccio and a Caesar salad. The salad was a bit underdressed for my taste (not that I want it swimming), but I also probably could asked for more. The carpaccio was fantastic and extremely generous in portion size. My friend enjoyed her mussels and Brussels sprouts which were also a generous portion. Was walking around with mom trying to find a dinner place and stumbled upon this. Was very busy so we sat at the bar. Service ok, food speed ok. My pasta was undercooked and slightly cold, but flavor was great. Truffle fries were slightly on the oily end but I still ate them all up. Mom's lobster bisque was good for her. Celebrated a birthday here and the food was fabulous. We got the lamb pasta, filet mignon and glazed carrots to dine on. The lamb pasta was our favorite! The hostess did not acknowledge the birthday request (I saw the res notes print), the server did not acknowledge the celebration and they do not do anything for birthdays (which is fine, just a simple acknowledgment was all I was hopeful for). I was a little disappointed in that because I was trying to make it a special meal for the other guest. I am a server so I always take note to make sure I recognize celebrations/tell the guests happy birthday. The server also forgot to put in my wine that I had to remind him what it was after our food had arrived (I understand during rush as a server but there were max 4 tables across multiple sections in the full restaurant). I also had a gift card that he did not know how to apply and I had to teach him how to apply it to the bill. He initially came back saying he didn't apply it and then after I told him what to do, he was able to correctly apply that to my bill. Overall the food was amazing but just was a little disappointed in the lack of acknowledgment for a special day and lack of education to use their system. I can't say enough good things about Meat and Potatoes. My standard salmon was anything but standard. Korean sauce, kimchi, Chinese sausage, fried egg, and black rice. It's unusual but it works in the weirdest way. The fingerling potatoes cooked in the buttery melt-in-your-mouth sauce completely hit the spot. The service was fast and friendly (our server was funny and brought personality and spice to the table which was appreciated). Great wine list, and a touch of class, postcards of Pittsburgh of yesteryear were provided with receipt. Old-school cool. After much coaxing, I was finally able to talk my husband into heading to Meat & Potatoes to try the Beef Wellington. His opposition? Good wine would be "ruined" by the crust on the beef. Thanks to a great bartender (we sat at the bar) who knew exactly what wine to pair with the meal, we had a fantastic dining experience that we both enjoyed and will repeat again soon. The decor and service were both superb, and the food was A+ perfection! The rub used on the beef before it was wrapped in the pastry dough sent the entree over the top, and the carrots were just the kind of simple offset required by a hearty main. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the upscale steakhouse experience, but wants something a little different. One of my Pittsburgh favorites! read more

I felt that original was a fitting word because it offered some dishes that I haven't seen at other restaurants. [Wagyu Carpaccio] My favorite dish. All the starters looked interesting and fit my taste, so it was difficult to choose. This was perfectly done, and reminds me of a more western version of the beef tataki at their sister restaurant Gi Jin. [Coconut Curry Mussels] Flavorful and masked the sometimes too fishy taste of the mussels well. The sauce was really good, but doesn't taste that Thai in case that's what some people were looking for. [Beef Wellington] This is what we came for, but I think it's overrated. Not the restaurant's fault, but this dish in my opinion is just not worth the price. The steak felt too dry and a bit too overcooked, and it's been the case no matter where I've had it. Drink menu was pretty extensive. We didn't try the cocktails but tried the digestif that the waiter recommended. Nice pairing to end the dinner. read more

Gave it a second chance--still disappointing After a lackluster first visit when Meat & Potatoes first opened, we decided to give it another try, hoping things had improved. Unfortunately, our second experience didn't fare much better. When we arrived, we were greeted by several staff members at the host stand openly complaining about cancellations--not the most welcoming first impression. We were seated promptly and ordered drinks, which were fine, though they took quite a while to arrive. We started with the bread, which was good but came in a surprisingly small portion given the price. My wife ordered the crab and corn chowder, which she said had great flavor but was served cold. I had the Caesar salad, which was overwhelmingly salty and lacked balance. For our entrees, my wife chose the mussels linguine, and I ordered the steak frites. When ordering, the server noted the kitchen tends to cook the steak medium-rare leaning toward medium, but I requested a true medium. It took over an hour for our mains to arrive, and once again, my wife's dish was cold. My steak was not only cold but cooked very rare--nowhere near the medium I had asked for. The server did offer to have the kitchen re-fire my steak, but after such a long wait already, I declined. To their credit, they removed it from the bill. Overall, while the ambiance suggests fine dining, the experience--from food temperature to pacing and service--misses the mark. For the prices they charge, the quality and execution simply didn't measure up. read more

This place has the best vibes and comfortable seats. Our waiter, Andrew, was extremely accommodating with making sure things were gluten free. The mussels were the best part of our meal. Meat and Potatoes is one of Pittsburgh's long standing, classic restaurants. This was my second time here but the first time I came was over 10 years ago so... basically my first time again hahaha! They are located downtown right by all the theaters and they are perfect for a date night . We got a complimentary glass of champagne for our anniversary which was so sweet of them!! For a drink, I ordered the Red Blend. The red blend was super unique, I can't even describe it lol. For an appetizer, we got the Parkerhouse Rolls. The rolls were a little sweet but not overpowering. Sooo tasty!! I ordered the Filet Mignon for my main dish. The filet was amazing. They put blue cheese on it and it just went so well with the filet. My boyfriend ordered the Rossini Burger and it came with a side of rosemary fries that I also ate :) The fries were great. My boyfriend said the burger was extremely flavorful and juicy. The service was fabulous as well. The guy that we had was super nice!! I'm so happy that we decided to dine at Meat and Potatoes. We are definitely going to be adding them to our restaurant routine! The atmosphere is much upscale than the name would suggest. Service was very friendly and importantly PROMPT! They managed the crunch of a Steelers game, a Bruce show and the post game Pirates crowd. I had the lobster bisque and a side of creamed spinach. Fabulous! My companion had the rigatoni and raved. They said my table wasn't ready, but there were lots of tables open. Not sure, maybe they were short staff. Anyway, I enjoyed a drink at the bar. The bartenders are not super friendly, but my Paper Plane drink was very good. Food was pretty good. The Wagyu Carpaccio was delicious. The filet was good, just not super flavorful. Lacked salt.
