Always a good experience at Meat Boss! Great service, great food, and even better people highly recommended!

For the last few months, I have seen a BBQ joint in Mobile called "Meat Boss." That has been receiving high praise from several "Best BBQ" lists. The hype is real! First of all, the outside looks like a quaint home but dont be fooled. Meat Boss is more serious about BBQ than anyone in your family with a grill. When you enter, you order at the counter. Ordering here was a different experience than any other BBQ joint I have been to. I usually look for like a 2 meat plate. But at Meat Boss, it is almost like going to a "Build Your Own Burger" joint. After much discussion with the cashier, I settled on 3 ribs, rib candy, and a brisket sandwich on a sweet bun with pickles, slaw, and all the sauces on the side. They call out your name when your order is ready and bring it out in brown paper sacks. I had 2 sacks haha First of all, I sampled the sauces. There are 5 - sweet, sweet and spicy, white Bama, Carolina, and spicy Carolina. The spicy Carolina and white Bama were my favorites. The spicy Carolina was spicy but not hot. There was also a form to it than just the runny, peppery, vinegar Carolina style. White Bama was the popular Bama white sauce that is mayo-based and usually made with black pepper, lemon juice, and other variety of ingredients. I thought the sweet sauce was way too sweet and I love sweet sauce. The Carolina is exactly like the Spicy Carolina except with less bite. The Sweet and Spicy was better than the Sweet. I tore into my ribs next. These ribs had plenty of meat with an excellent black pepper rub on them. These ribs I would consider eating without sauce and I'm a sauce-aholic! The rib candy was next on the agenda. It costs $2 and the cashier described it as "the ends of ribs cut off and carmelized with brown sugar." I received more than I thought I would as I was thinking one big piece. Instead, I had several pieces chopped inside a cup. It definitely had a sweet taste to it and it was too much with sweet sauce. But with the white and Carolina, it was phenomenal with the sweet and spicy aspect. Finally, I made it to my brisket sandwich. Alabama is not known for brisket but this was among the best brisket I've had. It was tender with a smoky flavor, and had a good bark to it. It was on par with the ribs. I had potato salad as my side. It was made from red potatoes in some kind of sour cream - hint of ranch concoction. It was the perfect accompaniment to my BBQ. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Meat Boss is pretty darn good! The sweet bun and white sauce are stars of the show for me, hands down! The meat is good, but when I called myself going carb-less on my first visit and doing the brisket sans the bun, I almost lost it when I tasted the hubs sandwich. The difference was severe. So severe, that I'll never do that again. For me, and I'm not a necessarily a true bbq girl, the meat and sauce should be able to hold its own (right?). The sweet bun and white sauce are non-negotiables with any meal I eat at MB from here on out. Super Covid clean. Very fast for BarBQ Curbside service was outstanding So this was my 1st time going to Meat Boss. I've always wanted to go but they close before I get off work and they are on the other side of town. However, today I was off work and ready to go. Brisket sandwich was so good I couldn't stop eating. Wife had the ribs and all I heard from her was smack smack smacking. I only wanted to eat half the sandwich. At 1st Then..... Came here at 1045 for lunch. They were changing over from breakfast and we had to wait for the change to occur. The owner's wife, "Aka, Mrs. Meatboss", came over to our table to help us since we were lost. Their menu isn't traditional as it's mostly based off sandwiches compared to normal platters of stuff. She had the patience to deal with us. She explained how everything came out and how her husband liked to do things. She then was nice enough to help us with splitting orders up. We ordered the following: Sausage Ribs Chicken Pulled pork Sandwich brisket. Brisket Beans, macaroni and cheese and sausage A very lovely couple gave us some of their rib candy as well. The following results. My opinion the sausage was better here then the Shed. Little crunchier, little more smoke to it. Ribs, she admitted were naw off the bone and not tender. Not my thing. Was not a fan. Chicken I thought was a bit dry for my taste. More Smokey flavor. Pulled pork and brisket. Both of these were good. Again, pork a tad dry, brisket more moist. You can taste the pepper which was good. Rib candy to me was good but reminded me of Chinese pork. Beans were good, large chunks of pork in them. Not too sweet. Mac and cheese was very good. Not dry large chunks of pasta. Sauces were very good. They had 5 to choose from. I can taste the apple cider vinegar in the Carolina one. My cousin is more of a Smokey flavor person. He thought everything was great. He likes a more dryer meat. So it's personal preference. I can't knock points off for that. Overall, I'd give this place with hospitality, friendliness and food a 4.75. read more

So being from Austin and Texas where BBQ joints are as common as Taco shops, I was a bit skeptical of Meat Boss when someone recommended it. He said it was the "best BBQ in Alabama" - that's a pretty big statement and one I haven't even made about any one place in Texas, at least not yet. I went in with low expectations. I asked the guy at the counter what he liked the most on the menu and ordered per his recommendation. A pulled pork sandwich on sweet bread with pickles, and sweet bbq sauce. The combo came with two sides and I opted for mac & cheese and banana puddin'. To sidetrack for just a moment, Covid-19 is a new reality and this restaurant had safety in mind. Everyone was wearing masks, the tables were well spaced, they had someone get my drink, and had a couple of tables set up for their takeout/pickup business. When the food was delivered to my table, it came in a paper bag with disposable utensils enclosed in plastic, salt and pepper packets, extra napkins, lids on everything, and the sandwich wrapped. All new standards that were well appreciated. Ok, back to the food. So, hands down, the Meat Boss has by far the best-pulled pork I've ever, and I do mean, EVER tasted! I literally savored every bite! I wasn't that sold on the Sweet BBQ sauce and I probably should have gone with the Spicy Sweet or White sauce instead. And oh my gosh, the sweet bun, purely heaven! Tasted like a giant Hawaiian roll, add pulled pork, sauce, and pickles and it was beyond amazing! The Banana Puddin' was really good and the Mac & Cheese hit the spot. So yeah, this big Texas boy found BBQ outside the great state that truly beat any other place I've ever tried. And trust me, I eat a ton of BBQ! I'm already planning my next visit and want to try their Rib Candy, White BBQ sauce, and their brisket. They also sport a pretty nice looking breakfast menu, so might be two more trips there while I'm in the city. Super friendly staff, very clean interior/exterior, not smokey inside like other BBQ joints I've visited (good for business folks), and a great menu selection of smoked and grilled meats. Fantastic BBQ. I got the brisket on sweet bun. Mike got the pulled pork on sweet bun. We both had sweet & spicy sauce. The potato salad is great but super rich. Mac and cheese is shells. It's good, no complaints, but we didn't come for the Mac and cheese so I'm not going to critique it. The meat flavor is really good and both meats were soooo moist. The banana pudding was meh. Mostly cool whip. I would have loved a really good banana pudding to finish off that spectacular BBQ What will I do differently next time? Order pulled pork and Cole slaw as my side. The pork was off the charts. The Cole slaw would be a bit lighter to offset the sandwich. Atmosphere is simple but we liked it. They def follow good COVID protocol. When you're looking for barbecue in Mobile, there's really no better place than Meat Boss. Everything from pulled pork to chicken to burgers is outstanding. The sides are very good, too. I've never had a bad experience there, the employees are always friendly and helpful. Orders are prepared quickly, and there's no waiting around for takeout. They have lots of seating indoors as well as outside, so it's got a great atmosphere for dining there. I eat there whenever I can, and recommend them to everyone. OMG. The brisket is some of the best I have ever had! And I have lived in Memphis and Texas! I tried the BBQ Beef sandwich on a sweet roll with coleslaw, pickles, and sweet and spicy sauce. Absolutely perfect! The meat has a wonderful bark and smokey flavor!!! The side of slaw was underwhelming...get something else. Great spot and worth getting off the Interstate for a stop! I would give this place 100 stars if I could - we came here on vacation after reading some reviews, and we were not disappointed. I had the smoked pulled chicken on top of a huge baked potato with the white bbq sauce, cheddar cheese, and sour cream. It was aaaaaamazing. Such good flavor and a great portion size. That white sauce truly is something special and the chicken was remarkable - so juicy and flavorful. My husband has the beef brisket - and let me tell you - it is worth whatever premium meat up charge. That bite of just the brisket alone was the best bite of bbq I've ever had. He made his a sandwich on sourdough with slaw and pickles with the sweet & spicy sauce. He said it was the perfect combination and there is nothing he would change. And that they did not skimp on the brisket serving size. For our sides we got Mac & cheese, boss beans, and banana pudding. The Mac and cheese was great - made with shells and was everything I hope for in a side dish. The beans had great flavor and a little peppery heat punch. But the banana pudding might have just stolen the show. It was sooooo good. If you are a fan of banana pudding, this is everything you hope for it to be. Highly recommended! Stopped by to try their entry in the Hamburger cook off October 2019. While I have eaten here many times and given them 4 and 5 star ratings on all of their BBQ I have tried, I have never tried their hamburger. I got their competition burger and baked beans. The burger has 1/2 pound of ground brisket and tiny bits of bbq on top. It was the best burger I have ever eaten, you must come and try it. The beans continue to be the best bbq beans ever and are well seasoned. I do not see how other restaurants can beat this . I have 3 more to try before I cast my vote but doubt if others can be better. read more

So good! Definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Mobile. I've frequented this restaurant and have never had a bad experience. Their Boss burger on a sweet bun is one of the best burgers in the area. I don't think you can get much better than their smoked meats. Also, THEIR BREAKFAST IS AMAZING.
