After my 5 star review a year ago, our second visit deserves an update. First off we were back for another friends birthday with a 4 PM dinner reservation. They sat our party of 10 in the furthest single room. It was like we were in trouble and sent to exile island! All other customers were two sections away from us! Service was great and is not an issue. My stars dropped because of the down grade in menu options and overall food quality. They were also out of seafood (not shrimp) broccoli and asparagus. There was no specials menu this time excepts for one side of Brussels. The food I had was just ok. The croutons on the Caesar were solid rocks. No one should be using boxed croutons anymore. They should cut up and toast the bread they make and serve when you're seated as their croutons. Those would be amazing! My arancini's were fine. The sauce with them is still good. That's why I'm updating to A-OK from 5-stars. read more

I haven't been here in 16 years since my HS graduation and I don't remember how it tasted when it was Genarro's. It's next door so I always pass by it. I try to ignore reviews and try places at least once to form my own opinions and since I haven't been in that long of a time, I decided to swing by. I got chicken Alfredo because I was craving it (sure, sue me). It was fine. Tasted like...chicken Alfredo. I've actually never been to Olive garden in my life but I wouldn't be surprised if it tastes similar. It came with a side salad--upcharges for certain dressings like caesar dressing. I just grabbed a simple vinaigrette. Salad was something you could toss together at home in 2 seconds. Chopped greens, cherry tomatoes, and drowned in sauce. I didn't really complain since I'm usually heavy on the dressing anyway. Bread came out first and it was a bit sad. Heavily buttered and a bit soggy. The oil/garlic dip was pretty standard, on the garlicky side. Maybe it's my preference, but would've liked it to be a bit crispier. I ordered a Manhattan which was fine but it took like 10 mins to come out. I had some time to kill so it didn't bother me too much, but I expected it to at least come out at the same time as the salad. Wasn't sure if the bar was slammed or not, but it was a pretty cozy weeknight so it didn't seem all too busy. Vibe inside was cute and dark. Felt cozy. Service was just okay--the server was very friendly and nice but the food and drink took a while to hit the table. Overall, probably a 5/10~. I don't remember Gennaros from 2011 when I last ate there but I still think it's quite cute inside, but wasn't impressed by the meal overall. That might've been on me, ordering Alfredo that I could just make at home. Sometimes you do be cravin Alfredo tho so don't judge me. read more

They must have had a rough night. My fiancée and I had a Valentine's Day dinner reservation at this restaurant on Saturday night. We arrived at 7:50 PM and were seated at 8:40 PM, which was very late considering they close at 9 PM. I started to worry that our experience might be disappointing. When our server arrived (she was excellent), she offered us a free drink or dessert as a gesture of gratitude for our patience. We decided to accept the desserts, which was a positive start. However, things quickly went downhill. We ordered promptly. At around 9:15...or so...our salads came out first and before the appetizer. They are well known for their home baked bread. When I asked our server about it she claimed that someone had "dropped" the bread and that they were making more. I was skeptical. The bread never arrived. Finally, around 9:40 PM, the rest of our order, including the appetizer and main course, arrived. It felt like the kitchen was rushing to finish everything, and it was clear that they were not doing their best. As for the food, the appetizer was a "Formagio Frito," which was essentially a food supplier-grade mozzarella stick. The breaded shell was filled with a cheese sauce that didn't even fill the stick. It was NOT real mozzarella. We also ordered the eggplant parmesan, and I like meat sauce on the side, so I ordered that as well. Unfortunately, they didn't have meat sauce on the side, but I did get served two very large meatballs that were so heavily seasoned with black pepper that they were inedible. I've been to this restaurant in the past and have always enjoyed it, so I'm hoping this was a one-off incident. I hate to folow up a restaurant visit with a bad review. Been meaning to go here for a while now, and treated myself to a dinner out. Considering that the outdoor seating looks very casual, there is an LED sign in the parking lot advertising live music, I expected something inexpensive and casual. Instead the prices were fairly high and the atmosphere was dim lights and old school Italian restaurant music. My server told me it was her first day, but no one was showing her the ropes. She was super friendly but a bunch of small things were missed. I won't hold it against her, that's a management thing for not having someone ride along with her to make sure things were A+. The bread came out OK, nothing special there. The fried cheese was good, but the Calabrian chili sauce tasted more like marinara. Caesar salad was just lettuce, Parmesan, croutons , and a very weak jar dressing... no anchovies and barely any lemon flavor. Pasta came out and the noodles were overcooked and not homemade, the sauce was extremely "bright", far too citrusy for my tastes, and while there was a generous amount of mussels, but the actual mussels in the shells were tiny and there was barely any scallops or shrimp, and for the price ($28), filling my plate with mostly empty shells didn't feel good. My bill was $55 before tip and I drank water and skipped dessert, for that amount of money at an Italian place I expect something pretty good. Price was on par with Laura's, which is a far superior dining experience in every possible way. Price sets expectations, and Mexico's is charging a fine dining price while not meeting the expectations that price sets. Really this should be two and a half stars, but I am rounding up on this one. Listen I want to love and recommend this place I really do but I am torn. On one hand the food so far has been great but the service and atmosphere is just off. Came for Valentine's Day dinner with a reservation at 7pm and was seated promptly but that however was the only positive thing about the evening. Never got bread or our drinks for 30 mins and it took another hour and 20 minutes to get our salads, appetizer, and entrees all at the same time. The server got our order wrong and the comp for free cheesecake was a nice touch but she as well as every other server there were spread extremely thin and I suspect the kitchen was no different. Again the food was decent and good but to wait over 2 hours for your food with poor service is definitely disheartening. read more

I want to start by saying I wanted to like this place so much more....the food was good but not amazing, however the experience was just not what we had hoped for. We walked in at 5:30 for our 5:45 reservation. There were 3 people at the host stand yet it took 3/5 min to be greated. When we were greated we were told that we had to wait til our reservation time. ( we were fine with that but the dining room was half empty) We got seated and we knew we were going to have amazing service because Tara was our server. She has never let us down and this time was no different. She greated us and got us our drinks and went over the specials. We started with calamari and it came out hot and crispy. Again it was good but not wow. My husband ordered the linguine Del Mar and he ordered it spicy, it was not. He said it was decent but wouldn't order it again. I ordered the veal Diane, which was always my favorite at Gennaro's. It was good, but not the same. Way too much cheese. Here is where our visit got weird... there was a woman walking around in yoga pants and a sweat shirt, she looked like she was in pajamas. Everyone else was dressed out together and she looked so out of place. We then heard her apologizing to a table and realized she was the manager on duty. We were both blown away at the lack of professionalism. We were sitting in the middle dining room and we heard her clear as day yelling at the kitchen and the kitchen responding, shut up no one likes you! I have been in the F&B industry for years and would never have let a employee dress how she was NeverMind a manager! Now I will go back because Tara is an amazing server, we never went without and the food was decent. However, I know the customers that went there as Gennaros and they are use to Rob walking around dressed nice, not someone that looks like they rolled out of bed. read more

Changes occur when ownership changes. Sometimes things should be kept the same. Bread is the same but the oil has a kick now with red chili. For me, no issue but for others this can be an issue. Gennaros took forever with food but always great. They still take some time here however, I think they might be finally somewhat quicker. I tried their filet steak just to branch out. TERRIBLE not tender at all and will never get this again. I'll stick with the lasagna , or chicken parm that I love.... Should have known better at an Italian place, however, I have had good steak at an Italian place. I'll be back to give Medici another try. I know it's tough to be compared to previous owners. But let's see if they can also match that service and table touches and the family feeling like before. read more

I was seated at a table just outside kitchen. Entire kitchen area open and I could see and hear everything including a reprimand to the hostess for not being at her station to answer phone. My server was pleasant but not versed on Italian food. She did not know what bolognese was. They were out of the appetizer I ordered. Calamari was tasty. Could have used another minute or two in the fryer. I ordered veal parmigiana. Pasta was not Al dente and did not have the bolognese/meat sauce I was promised. Everything was delicious! We had the stuffed peppers appetizer- they were huge with plenty of cheese melted on top. We love the pasta sauce and veal meatballs. The house dressing for the salad is a great creamy Italian. The bread was hot and fresh. Max was our waiter. He was excellent. Very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. A Must-Visit Italian Gem Near Charleston AFB Stopped by Medici's while searching for a great Italian restaurant near Charleston Air Force Base--and it did not disappoint! I chose to sit in the bar area, where I was instantly greeted by a friendly server, Kaylee, who brought fresh, house-made bread with olive oil. I started with a glass of delicious Pinot Noir and a Caesar salad that was absolutely outstanding. The server mentioned that both the dressing and croutons are made in-house, and you could taste the difference. The salad was perfectly tossed so that every bite had just the right amount of dressing--no clumps, just fresh, balanced flavor. For my entrée, I had the fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp, and it was phenomenal. The Alfredo sauce was rich and creamy, and the shrimp were large, tender, and plentiful--cooked to perfection. I finished my meal with a cannoli for dessert, which was wonderfully rich yet not overly sweet, the perfect ending to a fantastic dinner. I highly recommend Medici's to anyone looking for authentic, delicious Italian food paired with warm, attentive service--all at reasonable prices. Medici's in North Charleston was phenomenal, and Terry provided great service! We had the stuffed meatballs, chicken alfredo, and mushroom risotto. The portion sizes were large enough to share. The flavor and richness were on point - delicious, even indulgent! Terry came by to check on us often enough, but didn't hover. She was very nice too! Mussels are listed as an appetizer on the menu. They were served alongside my main meal. There was no fish fork provided, so I had to wrestle the mussels from the shells and couldn't get the sauce off my fingers. The waitress seemed to be unaware that appetizers are served before an entree. We complained that the olive oil for dipping the bread tasted "off," yet she made no attempt to bring something different. My entree was very tasty, but the evening was not a success. The fact that neither a senior citizen nor veterans discount aren't t offered just put a further damper on a bad experience. I haven't been able to find an email address for the restaurant, or I would have told them (again) of my disappointment. Got a gift card at Christmas for this place. Always wanted to try it out and saw signs for carry-out. Went over on Monday at 4pm. The chef said they closed due to prepping for the Valentines weekend. But he invited me in to see the 3 new dishes they were going to serve. Wow! All 3 looked great! I went ahead a returned on Tuesday @4pm when they reopened. I ordered Tuna Steak seared with hyosin sauce, mushrooms, roasted brussels sprouts and sautéed onions. I also ordered the Arancini. When I got home I split the meal in two for my wife and I to enjoy. Customer service is grossly lacking and the food is just bad. This used to be my favorite restaurant to frequent until the new owners took over. I am so disappointed and wish there was a good Italian place in this area but this one is a big waste of your money. The drive out of town for a decent meal is worth it in this case because every dish we ordered were over salted or over cooked as well as over priced for the quality you get. Even the atmosphere is dismal and uninviting. Can we get Genarro's back please because this new place is absolute garbage. First off the owner made our entire table uncomfortable, trying to advertise his comedy show. It took over an hour to get our entrees and our server was practically not there. I got the eggplant Parmesan and it was crusted to the plate because it had sat on a heater for so long. Yet it still took over an hour to get it. My pasta was cold and i do not recommend. Tried to eat at Medici's tonight. Granted they close at 9 and we got there at 8:24. Open sign was up, right side door latched, left door open. No one at desk. Employee sweeping in bar poked head around and jumped back. A few minutes later a waitress from the other side looked at us in the mirror and ducked back. No one bothered to come and either seat us or tell us they weren't seating any more tables. I would have understood. But with them hiding it was upsetting. We left and went to another restaurant. I was a Yelp Elite for a while, so I have a little experience at evaluating restaurants. My wife and I were dining at this restaurant, about twice a month, for a couple of years, before the ownership changed. We often would have conversations with the owner, about menu options and so forth. We had visits from him, every time we ate there. The new owners are doing their due diligence, and have been quite obliging. In fact, at one point I was told, "if there is something you want that we don't currently have, give us 48 hours and we'll put it together for you!" Now I ask you.....the food tastes good, the prices are fair, and they will custom make what you like!? What more could you want?! read more

We were a party of 6 locals who went to Medici's for our first time dinner since it took over the location formerly called Generos. We found the service improved and the atmosphere more lively. The food was largely the same as before with some improvements here and there. We found the portions a bit bigger and it was an overall enjoyable evening. One of the new owners came over to our table and introduced himself which we all appreciated. I would recommend the new Medici's and we shall be returning to try a few more of its dishes. read more

Horrible service! No music playing. Food order was completely wrong. No giving of water when we ordered drinks from the bar. Waitress had to ask what we ordered and still got it wrong. Someone said we ordered a 16" pizza and they have 18" which means their menu is wrong! A table came in behind us and got their appetizers before our child got her 10"cheese pizza. Just horrible. Went for dinner not too long ago with my boyfriend and my teenage son. Mind you Gennaros was my absolute favorite Italian restaurant here in North Charleston and I so badly wanted the restaurant to be the same. Well it was far from. The bread came out raw... how do you mess up bread??? My boyfriend had the dish that was know as the chicken bolognese that was kind of a chicken cordon bleu with Alfredo sauce and the sauce was disgusting. My son had lasagna and didn't understand why pieces of sausage inside tasted so badly. Weren't sure if they were fully cooked but they were not necessary in the lasagna anyway. I ordered the veal parm which wasn't on the menu and it was another terrible dish. The owner spoke to us and wasn't even nice all he kept saying was he used to be a lawyer. Honestly recipes changed even though he says they kept everything the same. It the same cooks. Worst experience at all Italian restaurant for us ever! So sad read more

I was a long-standing patron of Gennaro's and sorry to see them go. That being said, the new owners menu has been revamped with some favorites and some new dishes. I had the Chicken Gennaro and it was very tasty. The staff is still feeling their way with new ownership but are delightful as usual. Looking forward to many more great meals.
