Mediterranea has been our go-to restaurant for years. For its delicious food, the kindness of the staff, and the warmth of the space. Being gluten-free, I don't have many opportunities to have a relaxed meal with no worries about getting sick. And I particularly am not used to so many delicious and safe options to choose from. Most people I take here don't even realize it's gluten free. We've continued to get takeout during the pandemic, but am looking forward to when it will be safe to dine in again. read more

I am not sure what the rave reviews are over the brunch at Mediterranea. The service was fine and vibe was cool. That being said, the food was really sub par. I ordered the green shakshuka. I know it was their spin on shakshuka but it was poorly executed and was definitely not shakshuka. My fiance ordered the root vegetable hash. The first attempt came out cold and the second attempt was not stellar. To be honest the root hash tasted like it was left over from the night before and reheated. It is definitely possible that it was an off day but we probably will not be attending again for brunch. In Atlanta there are so many amazing brunch places that if you have a mediocre experience you are definitely more inclined to try something else before going back. read more

So excited to come across this new celiac friendly restaurant hidden away in Grant Park! The plant-based focus was just what we were looking for and the flavors didn't disappoint! They base their menu on the Mediterranean food pyramid so there is a great balance of vegetables, gluten free grains, healthy oils, fish and poultry. This place is AMAZING. Hands down. Run, don't walk. I'm gluten free but my husband isn't, and we both absolutely adore this place. The food is DELICIOUS. Everything we've ever had has been incredible, from the apps to the desserts. We visited this restaurant for the first and probably the last time last week. The location is lovely. As for the food? Mediocre at best. Had the pizza and was disappointed. Blah. Husband had some Italian dish that made him sick later that night. Perhaps it was the pickles in the beef dish, but in any case, the salad was lovely. The dressing was divine. Overall, overpriced for the amount and quality of the food. The waitress was not very attentive, and I sat in front of a empty cup of coffee. Sunday Brunch was fantastic. Roasted pepper omelet was perfectly balanced with melted feta inside and fresh greens on the side. Polenta(grits) was outstanding. Some of the best polenta I have ever had. Cocktails were perfect for brunch but I may just go right to beer next time. Had to go 4 stars based on service. This place has amazing food. I got a cherry and pecan scone, and the red shakshuka. The scone was not dry at all and had nice big cherries inside. The shakshuka is much smaller than it looks in pictures, and the biscuit that comes with it is the size of a quarter. However, it was just the right amount to fill me up and it tasted bomb. The flavor is that of really fancy chili and had a decent spicy kick to it, which I appreciate. My friend got the biscuit and gravy dish with poached eggs and that was delicious as well; the eggs were perfectly poached. We dined on the rooftop and there was a good amount of shade. I wish I could rate on just service. I would not give a 5 star. Our waiter took a while to serve the scone, which was already ready. He also took a while to take our order and get us our check. I wanted to really love this place, and I sort of do, but two stars is all I can give. This place is in the neighborhood and we've been super excited to try it, but it really fell short. To preface, my partner and I relocated from Chicago and our opinion is the same...it wouldn't last more than a few months. I'll just run through chronologically. The host was super friendly and welcoming. Points for the inviting atmosphere. The bartender was...well, brisk is putting it nicely. We sat down to wait for a table at the bar, we had made reservations so we knew it wouldn't be long. They have some signature cocktails on their menu, and deciding to branch out this date night from either a local beer, or a Manhattan (yes, I'm an old lady and proud of it), I chose to drink a fig based whiskey cocktail. Not bad, it was just lackluster. Not great, not terrible, just nothing to really leave a memory. My partner had a negroni-same story. For a great negroni check out Billy Sunday in Chicago. The super friendly host came to let us know our table was free, and we asked if we should close out our bar tab (like ya do), and he promptly answered that the tab would transfer, as I hear the bartender mention that she doesn't have time to close out. She's also the type that yells at poor Damian to dry her glasses but brushes him aside to do it herself because he's not doing it fast enough. We sat at a very nice table in the corner. Took a good while for our server to come around. The host, again, brought over a bottle of water and topped things off. We had some time to peruse the menu at the bar so we had already chosen in the 10 minutes it took for our server to appear. We ordered the house-made dolmas and baked feta to start, the involtini for me, and my partner chose the seafood hot pot. We also ordered a Fiddler on the park (best drink of the night) and a Goddard (second best). Our server did not return until I was done with my meal. The bartender brought us our cocktails, and a runner brought the food. Ran out of water halfway through. Now for the food, decent not outstanding. Judging from the photos here on yelp it seems that they have some trouble with consistency. Dolmas were served warm-weird. Baked feta was the best thing I tasted. My involtini didn't even look the same as the woman next to me who got it 45 minutes before I did. Good flavor of the two sauces it was served with. The seafood hot pot had good flavor, but the pasta was inconsistent with the style of the restaurant (elbow macaroni). Just seemed like to call themselves a Mediterranean restaurant it should be homemade (also for $26 bucks it shouldn't look like watered down kids macaroni!) Again, the server didn't come back to check on us until I was done, although they checked on the larger table next to us even AFTER they paid their bill. I even stacked up all our plates so they would be picked up. Little disappointed I didn't give me an opportunity to check out the wine list to have with dinner. I'll check the place out again for brunch, which seems to be where the excellent reviews are stemming. But this place needs to strive for more consistency with its plating and presentation. I felt gipped when my food arrived, and for the cost (yes it is $$$) not acceptable. Lastly, they absolutely need to hire more staff. The lack of service (other than the host) really brought this review down. Just moved to the neighborhood and was really hoping for an amazing, walkable spot and this place is exactly what we were hoping for. We ordered the Involtini and the Eggplant stack and they were amazing. We also got a slice of the pecan pie on special and wow! My only wish is that they'd sell separate sides of their rice and grilled veggies/zucchini because we loved those so much, we'd want to get extra next time. Sometimes you arrive at a restaurant at the perfect time and place. Today was such a day for us. We had been at the Grant Park Music/Art Fest. Our stomachs were in need, we had heard this place was good so we dropped in. We had to wait a bit since we had no reservation but no worries they have a great bar and a mixologist or two. The "Old Fashion" was remarkable and so was the hospitality. The crowd is an interesting mix of hipsters and boomers. The wait staff is friendly and customer focused. We went for a Saturday night date night and it was great! The baked feta appetizer was delicious as was everything else we had. The house salad included pistachios and watermelon radishes and a buttery lettuce that I don't know the name of but it was fresh and very tasty. I had the roasted chicken and root vegetable hash and my wife had the dolmas wrapped in chard. Reservations are suggested. We did not have reservations but the bar area where we sat was perfect for us and all of the staff are friendly and professional. This place is A MESS. Went in on a Friday night. Were greeted by two unfriendly guys who seem to be the owners. (?) They just look at you when you come in. No friendly greeting. Nothing. This is how your experience starts. They also did this to everyone that came in after us. The place was nearly empty and they asked if we had a reservation. Then were made to wait at the bar for 20 minutes for a table. It took the bartender about 10 minutes to get to us and about another 5 to get us a beer and a glass of wine. Then when we sat down our waitress was pleasant but ALL OVER THE PLACE. Barely came to our table to check on us. Also people who came in after us were also herded at the bar and had to wait longer than we did... while tables sat open. This place doesn't seem to have the experience or staff to handle a full restaurant.. let alone a half full one. Food was okay. Overpriced for what it was. I'd say don't waste your time and money. Go somewhere with better service and better food. If you're looking for a romantic evening with someone.. there's places in the city that actually have it together and make you feel like they want your service. read more

The food is incredible, no doubt about it. The eggplant stack is especially amazing. But the management needs to pay their servers more and / or hire more of them. The place is really disorganized and poorly run. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. The hostess was doing the servers' job for them, presumably because they were overwhelmed by how much they had to do. No one knew that we needed to order our entrees until the hostess asked (we were seated by the door). We didn't get our drinks until we were about to leave (2 hours later). read more

Mediterranea is fantastic!... gluten free, half price wine bottles on Wednesday, delicious brunch. Go in on a Wednesday evening, sit on the patio, order a bottle of wine and one of every appetizer on the menu. It's perfect for 2 people and you get a really good feel for the variety Chef Rob has put together with this menu. Entrees? The roasted chicken, involtini, branzino... everything, quite frankly is wonderful, as is the staff. We've never had less than stellar service. We went for brunch and it was like a warm hug. The menu is small, check it out first and make sure there is something that you would order. I was glad that the special was a steak and eggs plate because most of the menu items were sweet. They were out of the smoked trout, which was what I wanted. I got the french toast which was very good but VERY sweet. My brunch companion liked their gravy and biscuits. It wasn't my favorite but I was looking for more lunch options than breakfast options. We ordered strawberry cupcakes, scones and mini lemon bundt cakes for my daughter's 16th birthday. We have grown accustom to GF tasting like sandpaper, so didn't have high hopes. Discovering Mediterranea has been a pleasant surprise. First, we tasted the lemon cakes, which blew my mind! No a hint of sandpaper in sight. It was so moist and delicious. Blown away by this lunch spot. Met for a business lunch with a coworker who is gluten free and I'm vegetarian. This was not an issue what so ever being that the whole menu was gluten free...including all breads and crusts and had a wide selection of vegetarian options. Excited this gem is in Grant Park. The location has plenty of free street parking and the restaurant is in a beautifully renovated corner retail spot across the street from a newly installed playground. The inside of the restaurant is quaint but not too tight. Went for Sunday brunch and though we were one of the first people to arrive, the space filled up nicely by the time we left. We both ordered vanilla lattes that took several minutes to make, but were really good once they arrived. The menu was a nice mix of hearty vegan and vegetarian options with a few lean carnivorous choices as well. I had the biscuits and gravy and the portion size was spot on and delicious. My boyfriend's mom ordered the root vegetable hash and said it was delicious. Hope to be back again and try more of the menu. Most of the tables were groups of 2-4 people but there is room for a few larger parties. read more

Egg plant stack is one of the best dishes of my life. The atmosphere here is mellow. It's in the middle of a neighborhood so it's quite. It's like you're on someone's deck (only eaten outside). Cocktails are great. Everything is well thought out but not over thought. It really is a perfect little eatery. No gluten here anywhere. Zero gluten. You won't miss it. Grant Park, where I have lived for the last decade, is not well served with restaurants or businesses in general. That has been changing recently, as the neighborhood has been changing. A few restaurants have been around forever, though none of them would be anything you would go out of your way for (the exception being Ria's Bluebird). Several have opened and closed rapidly. Mediterranea is the grooviest restaurant the neighborhood has had in the last decade. Generally, Middle Eastern-inspired (I know that doesn't sound good), the menu is gluten-free (that also doesn't sound great unless one is gluten-free) with a lot of vegetarian options and some unusual dishes. I have eaten there twice and prefer the dinner menu, where we have ordered the quartet of spreads, very yummy, the baked feta in red sauce, swell, and the house salad of Boston lettuce, watermelon radish, sweet onions and pistachios, which was spectacular. This place should be of particular interest to vegans. They also have excellent cocktails such as the Blueberry Bramble with Four Roses whiskey, ginger liqueur, blueberries and lemon. The brunch was fine and much healthier than any brunch you would find elsewhere (I don't think they use much oil), though not as inspired as the dinner menu. It gets crowded on weekend evenings, for the moment, and is on an off-street not close to any commercial area, so I hope it survives. read more
