The middle eastern / Mediterranean grocery store has tons of great ethnic stuff at reasonable prices, also a butcher and fresh baked Mediterranean style Breads and pastries. I find myself inventing things I "need" in the market just so I can treat myself to lunch in the fabulous restaurant next door. Hands down the best beef or chicken shawarma I've had in Sacramento. The Falafel patties are made to order and delicious, with a light but flavorful tahini sauce. The food is served on bread so fresh you literally see the hard-working guy pulling it out of the fire pit just before serving it. And the side dishes are awesome and fresh. Everything you would expect in a Mediterranean type restaurant including great hummus, stuffed grape leaves and tabbouleh. The place is spotless, the service is fast, and the decor is very appealing. So much fun to see the bread being baked and the food being assembled. I would eat there every day! read more

I was drawn into this place after seeing the pics of house-made pita bread, but I guess the pita bread isn't really showcased at the store nowadays as it's now tucked in the corner of the store with factory-made pita lol. I still got some fresh pita bread; it's pretty decent. It's cool that they have Ethiopian flatbread, injera, here also. Besides that, it's a typical tiny "international food mart." Nothing else special. The spices area could use some more organization. Eh, I'd say just come here for the bread. read more

They carry ALL things Mediterranean. I came here to get my pita bread. They have an array of items. Many different food, oils, spices, beverages, candy. When you walk in you can smell all the different spices. My sons were like "what is that smell?" And I had to let them know. I think they just didnt understand. While checking out I noticed they carry nestle smarties! I died and went to heaven! The guy was super sweet who was helping me. The people who work there so dumb, especially the Afghani cashier guy he doesn't know anything. this is the second time I order from them the first time he messed up and took my order and gave it to different people I already order it like 2 days in advance for some family party. First of they forgot about the order and they made me wait more than an hour to get at the end they messed up with it. And the second time i explained to the Afghani cashier guy my order and made sure he understood,but still didn't get my order right. Also it took them forever to get my order ready they were dealing with people who came after me. I won't lie they have a really good food since they change the owner, but the stuff their need to learn how to get their job right. read more

This is a great middle eastern market, we usually come for the baklava dough, fresh bread and random yummy things that we miss from home. They have a great dessert section and fresh bread baked there, smells soooo good. The shawarma and falafel sandwiches are really good too. They have a halal meat section but we don't usually get our halal from there so I can't say much about it but it's usually busy so that's a good sign. read more

Meat Department does not have sink to wash hands and equipment... Butcher does not wear gloves and cross contaminates meat products... Deli displays are filthy...Meat slicer filthy... Behind the counter filthy and floor is very dirty... Bug spray kept behind the counter... I already had my minor food poisoning a month ago... I buy only "non-expired" can items [if I had to]. I've been coming to this store for about 10 years now. I first met this lovely market when they were just down the street in the Filco building. Ahh....it is a lovely place. This place as all of your needs if you are hankering for all things Middle Eastern. I don't know why M J didn't have any luck finding any thing Persian there. I find it all the time. Most of the times I go there I bump into a lot of Persians. I also like the fact that the owners remember who you are and what you like and are willing to special order things for you if they are out of it. For instance, there is a lovely Turkish Soda that I found there once...and it ran out very fast, they special ordered it for me and called me the next week to let me know I could come pick it up. Any spice, cheese, meat, utensil, olive, grape leave, even fresh produce you could ever think of it here. I recommend this place to anyone looking for new foods to try. I bring all of my friends here and they always end up finding something they like. read more

After purchasing ground sumac from one of those "leading organic grocery stores" that was probably the scraps swept up from the factory, and also packaged in a little box that was $3-4 for like a tablespoon: I was SO thrilled to find the gigantic-extended-family size container of ground sumac on the shelf here for $2.99. Ohhhh delicious sumac onions/pita/hummus/ beef and things here I come!! Not to mention the store was nicely stocked, busy, people everywhere, they have huge containers of bulk spices... hookah supplies... and the place is clean inside and well taken care of. read more

The best part of this place: A big container of like 20 fresh, hand-made dolmas for about $3.50. Seriously awesome- At Whole Foods you might get 3 dolmas for that same price! The also have tasty house-made hummus, cheeses and olives. Also, a halal butcher case with meat that looks fresh, with good prices. Huge variety of canned/dry goods- for example, about 15 brands of canned dolmas! This is now my regular stop for a little something different. LOVE IT!!! read more

I am pretty sure this place is family-run, as I always see the same people working hard here day after day. I come here during lunch hours for their shawarma lunches, mortadella, halal chicken/meat, and pita bread. The shawarma alternates between beef and chicken. I have not identified a pattern yet, nor have I asked what determines the choice of the day. I do know that they offer it every day except Sunday. $4 gets you a small, and $6 gets you a large. The taste and quality can vary wildly, but it is usually tasty and filling. The lady who usually makes the sandwiches is very nice and it is always a pleasure to see her. They are always busy and have a pretty big selection in their market. The halal meat and chicken is also very, very reasonably priced, and I love the mortadella and bread options. My only problem with this place is that they have one cashier 99% of the time, and when it gets busy, the line can take quite a while. The inconsistency with the Shawarma, plus the lines, takes away a star. read more

Prices are fantastic, customer service is wonderful and if they don't have it, they'll do their best to get it for you. The Halal Butcher Counter is staffed with oh so knowledgeable friendly folks, that will help you in any way they can to realize your recipe come to life. The "Deli Counter" has a cherry variety of cheese and other ready to go delectable edibles. Plus lunches and dinners ready to eat. Frozen delights are also available in the freezer section. The EVOO "Sultan" Olive oil is large and in charge, priced at a little over 20 bucks is a Frugal Fantastic Find. (It's located right up front by the door) Non edible items such as Hookahs, Ethnic Clothing and the like are found behind the checkout counter. They don't have chapati flour, but they do have aged basmati rice, though not as many different brands as Red Sea, off Stockton and 65th. And they have gigantic jars of tahini, though I just ordered a shitload off the internet so I haven't looked at the prices. I haven't checked out the restaurant, I tend to just drop in for the cheap staples while I'm in the area for BevMo or Cost Plus or what have you. read more

Totally convenient, and the people are friendly (especially if you are new to the spices and brands, like me). Come here for the extensive hookah gear, breads, spices, and frozen vegetables! Yeah, my mom and I even come here for the frozen okra to use in our Vietnamese soups. Tens times better than Trader Joes or Whole Foods when you need those obscure ingredients for that special recipe. they also have a great selection of dried lentils and grains by the pound. I'm sooooo happy to have found this market! I love to cook Moroccan and Persian dishes and it's very hard finding ingredients where I live (close to Folsom). I've been acquiring most of my spices from the Indian market near my house but what I cannot find at the Indian market and the nearby European markets I have to order on-line. This store had every single spice I was looking for PLUS about a zillion other things I will buy next time I visit. Their selection of extra virgin olive oils and tahini's were almost overwhelming. I found sumac spice (which I ALWAYS have to order on-line) and grape leaves and just for the heck of it I bought some pre-mixed zaatar .... because it was there and it looked fresh and delicious! Good selection of feta cheeses and the list goes on and on. Everyone that worked in the store was very friendly and helpful. Nice to shop in a place like this. My husband is arabic and we are from the bay area, originally, where there are many more of these types of stores and I have never been to one that is so clean and well-stocked and with such friendly staff.....even when you are not arabic, like myself. This market is as good as the others. You can get all the essential stuff for all the ingredients you might need for your typical middle eastern and indian cooking. If you're Persian, you might appreciate to know that the garlic beef mini mortadella tastes very close to the Demes Kalbas that you could get in Iran. I always have sliced it myself at home, but if you'd like you could ask them to slice it there for you. They have halal meats here, which I know are very important to the Pakistani, Iraqi, Afghan, and other muslim countries. They also have young chicken, and young turkey, which is the essential meat for the kabobs and rotisseries. Overall, you could get all your herbal and spice needs as well as your grains and meats here. If you don't mind non-halal meat, the meat here is not the freshest or the cheapest, but you can get really good deals on spices, herbs, basmati rice, and other legumes and grains. read more

I was recommended this place by a friend one day because I was looking for turkish coffee. I called the place and was told they had it and had the ibrik I was looking for. The guy inside was very helpful and recognized me voice from the phone call. He showed me everything I needed, made sure I knew how to make it and regaled me with stories of how his family makes and drinks it. And what a gentleman. I had seen the wall of shisha and asked what his favorite flavor was and he handed me a jar and said it had a funny name but he like it. The name was "Ater Sex". I'm in no way easily embarrassed or offended but how courteous....just in case. I haven't tried any of their hookah stuff yet but intend to when my current stash runs out. read more

This was s little far for me but worth the drive. It had everything I needed, preserved lemons for chicken tangine, all herbs, dried and fresh many varieties of basmati rice and many varieties of couscous as well as semolina to make your own. The bread was baking as i walked in so bought plenty to take home. The men waiting on me were polite and quick. I will go back for sure. read more

This place is good, but not the best. What can I say? I'm used to the markets in SF or LA that have everything, and are huge. This market has a lot of items that are hard to find, and are truly authentic. I was there for an especially important mission to create my Persian New Year Hafseen. Although I couldn't find a couple of things I needed, they certainly had a great amount of things I didn't need but LOVED and hadn't had in a while. I just wish there was an authentic purely Iranian market so I could have bought everything I needed in one place. read more

Went into Sac Town today for our ethnic shopping. Included was this Middle Eastern food emporium as well as other Yelp recommended Mexican places. We bought several packages of pita bread and lavosh for the freezer since the trip into Sac takes 3 hours round trip. Couldn't pass up the bulk halvah and another package of chocolate covered halvah. Next to the meat section. The butcher was probably the best experience in the store. He was super helpful and friendly even when we couldn't make up our mind if we wanted our leg of lamb cut into kabobs or whole. He said that he was there to make our life easier. What a great attitude.! We also got a lot of ground lamb which he asked if we wanted course or fine ground. I can't rate the quality of the meat yet, but it certainly looked good. The store is not large, but the stock is varied and has just about anything you would want in Middle Eastern food. We will return. read more

This place was just O.K., as a fan of Mediterranean food I did not taste or thought the Shawarma was anything out of the ordinary. It may be just me or the hour I visited but I found the meat to be a bit dry and chewy. I've had much better and at a better price to sum it up. Also, I was never greeted nor thanked for my purchase. Driving past this market at night, I've promised myself to check it out during business hours "one day." The day finally arrived after my giant tub o' pitted kalamata olives from the Greek Food Festival ran out. Not only did this store have the desired olives, thus saving me from ordering and paying for shipping from an internet speciality food store, but it happened to be the same vendor that services the greek food fest. Score! I was also pleased to see every kind of feta cheese here in the deli case; greek, french, bulgarian, armenian, etc. When he learned it was our first visit, one of the shop owners of this family business took the time to tell my companion and I about the shop, its features, and what items are the big hits there (olives and feta cheese being a couple of them.) I appreciate that level of cordiality in this type of "mom and pop" grocer-- a totally different shopping experience than supermarket shopping. Though I bought no meat in this visit, I was also impressed the store carries halal meat. We found whole wheat lavash which can be very difficult to locate, and a simple way to introduce more whole grain into your diet. We picked up some prepared tabouli and hummus from the deli case at a reasonable price and they were very good! We picked up some dolmas too, but timing might be crucial here... I felt the filling had gone a little too soft for my taste. In all, though, we filled our basket with some speciality items that one can either not find at all or pay unnecessarily much for in the supermarket; phylo dough, baklava, pita bread, dates, etc., and were very happy with our purchases.
