Great selection of food products that can be hard to find. We were looking for a specific spice from the area but only had a very generic name for it. The owner was very helpful and landed us on a combination that we sure was it. A previous visit was at lunch time and the food was excellent. The only shortcoming was the stuffed grape leaves...I like them warm, these were quite cold. But that, being a taste preference, didn't warrant reducing this rating. read more

I love this place. Its cute and close to my apartments so I can just buy a gyro whenever I have that craving. The people are always friendly, especially the owner who is very adorable. I like that I could also buy different kinds of chocolates you usually cannot find at a super market. The only reason why I go here is for the gyro. They're taziki sauce has so much flavor which will leave your mouth with onion and garlic breath, in which I do not care for because this stuff is good. My family and I stopped here on the way to Vancouver. The food was incredible, and the service was excellent. I'm from Los Angeles, and the food reminded me of the things I usually eat at home. The owner was incredibly sweet, and even gave us tips on what to do once in Vancouver. I ate the gyro (comes in beef or chicken) and it was well worth the price. It's a pretty huge sandwich. I love this place! The lamb shawarma is incredible! I also enjoy shopping here for large containers of olive oil, delicious pastured eggs. It's also a great place to pick up a bottle of wine. I really like shopping here, the folks that run it are friendly and helpful, it's my "go to" for gallon tins of extra virgin olive oil, there is a wide selection of more pricy options as well if I want a super flavorful really high quality bottle, they also carry a number of different types of tahini. One of my favorite finds are the canned Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves) Poli Kala brand if I remember correctly, I never leave without at least a couple of those. They are better than some of the "fresh" ones I have had in the past. They also have a nice section of spices they have repackaged from bulk at quite fair prices, along with a variety of capers, and a few things that are harder to find like preserved lemons. The deli has pretty good falafel sandwiches, and its one of the few places in town to get a variety of frozen filo and puff pastry doughs, I really like that the puff is rolls not blocks. With many ethnic grocery stores there are also enough items I have never seen or heard of to make me do a little homework and find out what it is and maybe go back and try it. First off, I want to say that Mediterranean Specialties has the most polite and friendliest staff of any restaurant in all of Bellingham. I've seen them feed people who were caught stealing from their shop and seen firsthand their kindness. Although the price of their food can be more expensive than other options, their food, specifically the gyros (for me) are delicious, fulfilling, and comforting. Is a zero rating possible? If you want bad food and rude proprietors, try this place. Not only was the Shawarma wrap falling apart, it tasted bad and was gritty. Worse, when brought to their attention their response was," what can I say, I don't make the bread...the people that make the brought bad bread. ". Not good food, worse was the lack of concern by proprietors after spending $20 on wrap and small salad. No attempt to make me feel anything other than "ripped off." Love this place! I've been searching for a decent gyro in Bellingham (Aladdin's in Seattle's U district is my favorite) and I have finally found a place to satisfy my cravings. I got the chicken gyro and substituted the tzatziki sauce for tahini sauce, and it was delicious! Mediterranean Specialties is the only place in Bellingham to provide a whole range of foods and groceries that we would otherwise have to do without or order by mail. Taramasalata, muscovado, demerara, and turbinado sugars, three kinds of filo dough, dozens of different kinds of olives. The food they cook and serve is also excellent, carefully prepared and generous portions. I'm reminded of shops run by families when I was growing up in Chicago, where you could talk to someone who really knew about what you were buying -- how to cook something, whether there might be a better choice for an ingredient. Had the chicken gyro. Pita bread was good but the chicken had no seasoning and it was dry as well. Also would've been better if they had cut the chicken to smaller pieces, just a tad bit smaller. Vegetables were nice and crisp. Tzatziki sauce was kind of spicy, I like mine to taste a bit more yogurt-y but everyone's tzatziki is different. We stop here all the time when we drive between Seattle and BC. The hummus is mouth watering and the roasted eggplant and cauliflower are fresh and a fabulous, natural snack. I will never eat here again. I've frequented this restaurant in the past, and to be honest their food is ok. What I don't like is the guy that owns it. I was waiting outside in their empty parking lot for my wife to show up so we could get dinner there, and the owner pulled up in his van and started to unload some items. He then told me to move my car; that he needed the parking space. He then said he owned the whole mall and he wanted me to leave. What an @ss! I took off my coat, showing him my work clothes with my tie on, and told him I'd make sure that all my clients knew not to go there again. Never again. read more
