A dated exterior door handle fell off the entrance to our condo building causing a fire hazard as well as cosmetic issues with one of the units going on the market the following day. Mega immediately came out to assess and was concerned that due to the historic nature of the hardware and door that repairing may not be an option. After numerous phone consultations throughout the evening (to include helping me identify multiple different options), we came up with a long term solution that was affordable and maintained the integrity of the door and hardware. $155 for 15 seconds of work. Long story short I accidentally forgot my keys and trapped myself between the two entrance doors of my apartment building. I didn't even have my cell phone. Unfortunately I live in a small building and it was a weird time of day when no one was answering the front door buzzer and it didn't seem likely anyone who lives in the building would be entering anytime soon. It had probably been about 30 minutes so I borrowed a phone from someone passing by on the sidewalk. Mega Locksmith's number was listed on the front door buzzer panel and without any other options it was the number I called. I was told it would be 30 minutes before they arrived, but it was probably about 5-10 minutes. So that was the only "positive" about the experience. I almost wish they would have been longer because by then someone else may have entered the building to let me in. I felt completely ripped off by the whole experience. If this ever happens again I'll just freeze in the entryway rather than be ripped off. read more

I came home from a trip to buy ice cream and realized my key had broken off in the door lock. I asked doorman for a locksmith number. He gave me Mega Locksmith phone number so I contacted them. This was the second time my key had broken off in key lock in the past two years. Previously, I used another locksmith that was recommended by my another doorman for the exact same problem for under $125,00. When the locksmith from Mega security arrived he quoted me $220.00 to fix my lock on a Monday around 9:00 pm. I was absolutely shocked. He said if I did not like quote to go find someone else. I actually wanted him to leave but I felt badly that my boyfriend was missing the Hawks game. Then he said he would not fix lock but would charge only $150,00 to open door. I agreed and one second later door was open. My boyfriend said he could get broken key out of lock after the locksmith got us back in condominium. Side note: My boyfriend did get broken key out of door but was unable to put lock back together. I have to call new locksmith this morning. After I paid locksmith I I went down to pick up the ice cream that I gave to the doorman to keep cold due to my lock out. Upon arriving to doorman station I found the locksmith in the room behind doorman station complaining about me being upset about his super high rates. It kind of felt like the doorman and locksmith were in cahoots. The whole experience was creepy start to finish. read more

He "fixed" the problem by replacing two screws. Took him about 10 minutes and the charge was $175. This is certainly not a place I'll ever call again, and I recommend that you try somewhere else for your lock service. Update: About 6 months later, the lock began to fall apart again in exactly the same manner -- that's about $30 per month for the "fix." I will definitely call a different locksmith this time. Someone should of saved me years of school and told me to be a locksmith. $180 in 13 seconds ( I counted). The guy got upset when I told him I paid $95 the last time I was locked out at 3am. He immediately told me to call someone else. There was no deadbolt and no lock was changed. The only explanation is that the hanger is made out of gold and dust from Mars. I need to get a hanger. The service Itself was very fast and well done. However, their prices are a rip off. He charged $299 for a part that is available online for $75. He charged $10 per button which would each cost about $1. this is on top of his $85 hourly rate. I would recommend calling someone more honest. read more

I made an appointment yesterday for today, 12/31 between 9 and 10 a.m. Yes, I live on the South Side (on Lake Park in an affluent area) but why should that mean that we can't get any services at all? The locksmith never showed up, and it is now 12:23 p.m. I got no call saying that they would be late or that they couldn't or wouldn't come. I am sick and tired of businesses not serving the South Side with any professionalism whatsoever. If they had at least called before the time passed for the appointment I would have given them some credit for professionalism. As it is Mega Locksmith and Security is one of many businesses that thinks they can be completely unprofessional and not show up, with no consequence. Used these guys when the lock on the front gate to my condo building broke. Called in the evening around 7 expecting to have to schedule someone to come out later in the week. They promised someone within 30 minutes, and Ben arrived within 30 minutes. Ben was professional, courteous, and had the lock fixed and re-keyed within 30 minutes. Everything is working great a week later, with no complaints about the several generations of keys in place within the building. Some other reviewers commented that their rates are expensive. Unfortunately, I did not read any reviews before calling Mega Locksmith to change my locks. Like most of these reviews, I asked my condo management office for a recommendation, and they gave me Mega. I called them and they offered to come out the very next day. I explained that I had another appointment arriving at 10am, so Ben gave me a window of 9-10. The locksmith showed up just before ten. Seemed irritated and was borderline rude when explaining to me that "changing the locks" only meant the key "pins/cylinder". I didn't have time to call Ben because my 10 o'clock appt had arrived, so I allowed Angelo to do the job. I've never needed the services of a locksmith before and I thought the $125 fee was within the realm of reasonable & customary. However, I didn't care for the lack of explanation from Ben (on the phone) regarding the breakdown of fees to expect. And especially the attitude of Angelo. Frustrated with ongoing lock-outs and inability to keep the door unlocked and finally unable to even turn the knob......I called Mega Locksmith. My gentleman call to confirm the arrival an hour before and showed up on the dot. He dismantled the entire lock & knob , cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled it. My wife and I needed a locksmith to help change-out locks the day we purchased our new home downtown. We received Mega Locksmith's name as a recommendation from our realtor. When we looked at Yelp before calling the service, we were initially hesitant based on the negative reviews, but we decided to use them based on the personal recommendation we received. The short story is: we were totally satisfied with the service provided and would definitely use them again. We contacted Mega Locksmith with relatively short notice to setup a time for lock change-outs. The technician, Ami, arrived on-time and with the right equipment to re-key our locks. He was also courteous about taking off his shoes when entering our home which we always find to be a good sign. When I made the appointment, I had mis-counted the number of locks to change, but Ami was very polite and flexible and helped change out everything we needed. Our technician also identified a corroded lock that could not be re-keyed, and he gave us options for replacing the door handle with several price-points and quality recommendations so we could make a decision on how we wanted to proceed. We have had support from the same technician, Ami, during a warm summer day as well as a sub-freezing day, and we will be very willing to use Mega Locksmith again should we need locksmith services. I am usually skeptical of 5-star reviews as I think they are "fake," but my wife and I were truly satisfied with the service we received, and we have no other affiliation with the business other than being a customer. read more

Never ever use this locksmith service. Admittedly, I see some great reviews for a few guys that makes me sad that I didn't get one of them. However, I think the outcome would have been the same no matter who showed up today. Tonight, I locked myself out of my apartment and called the mega locksmith service. When I got a follow-up call, I missed it. I texted the guy back letting him know that my phone was dying but, I was at home and did need his service. I also him know my name and address. Additionally, I asked a friend that I had parted ways with 30 minutes prior to call Mega for me because I was worried that my phone was going to die. She called them and gave my address and explained that my phone had died but verified that I do need the locksmith service. The guy showed up and through his truck window said to me, "where is the girl?" I was stunned and a little offended but quickly let him know that I am the one who called originally and that I am the one in need of his services. He stared at me suspiciously for a few seconds before exiting the truck. Hoping to break the ice, I went to him and explained that my friend called because my phone had died. He ignored me. I then guided him to my apartment and explained that only the kwikset lock was the only one that needed unlocking. I asked him the price for his services and he told me that it would cost $185. I was flabbergasted as he went on to explain that it cost so much because of the type of lock and that it is the weekend and that the weather is bad. I was so thrown by the fact that he would charge me more because it was the weekend and because some snow is falling. I explained this to him and added that those factors should not matter because they are a 24/7 locksmith service. He said that the best he could do is go down to $160 for me. We went back and forth briefly and I explained that I would pay but that I wanted an itemized receipt that detailed what I was paying for. I should point out that as he quoted me the price and gave me a b.s. reason for why it would cost so much, without any prompting from me, defensively, he said to me, "It doesn't matter if it takes me a few seconds or 10 minutes to get the lock open, the price will still be the same." That was an indication to me that he was jacking the price up. After I asked for the itemized receipt and explained that I would pay, he refused to give an itemized receipt. We went back and forth about the receipt and in the end I reiterated that I would pay but, I would also give a follow-up call to Mega to ask about the cost for their services. I guess this angered him and he decided to leave. He told me that I can go online and find a cheaper service if I wanted to. At this point, I had already made it clear several times that I would pay but, learning that I would investigate further sent him scurrying. Because he's a locksmith, he knew that I was in a tough position and I think he decided to leave to spite me. I was actually hurt by his lack of compassion but my pride also would not let me beg him to stay only to advantage of me. Fortunately, my landlord changed the locks a few days earlier but he is terrible at it so, a twist of the knob and slight pressure caused the door to pop open. Thank God!!! I was so relieved that my nightmare was over and that I didn't spend so much money for nothing. After reading the other reviews, seeing such a range in the prices charged and having the price quoted to me for a simple kwikset be so high, I feel impelled to point out that I am an African-American male. I am clean cut, a student and part-time teacher but again, after reading about some of the experiences of others, I believe that the price quoted to me was so high because of my race. I could be wrong so I am not married to that idea but I do know for a fact that this very dishonest man was trying to take advantage of me. I am just grateful that the universe saved me from that fate. That was my ordeal and I honestly think that no one should ever use their services! I hope this detailed description helps! read more

Yet, instead of trying to upsell me on a new system, Adam diagnosed the problem and was able to fix the system at a very reasonable cost. Today I broke my Key off in my door. I called Mega and the man I spoke with said it would be cheaper if I brought in the handle with the broken key. Brought it in at 4pm and the Key was removed by 4:10 and he made me a new Key. When I asked him how much he said don't worry about it. Haven't used them for locksmith services yet but would highly recommend for intercoms!! We have had problems with the intercom in our 100+ year-old building for years. Our previous electrician had been trying to troubleshoot the problems for about 3 years but every time he fixed (or tried to fix) one issue something else would go wrong. Then I called Mega Locksmith. The electrician fixed the first problem immediately. It was a simple issue solved by replacing push-button contacts that our previous electrician was unable to figure out! But then he went on to diagnose and fix a loud buzzing noise that happened every time someone used the speaker. Honestly, I had given up on anyone ever figuring out the problem because wiring systems in old buildings can be really tricky. But after two hours, the buzzing sound was gone and he had repaired some other mistakes the previous electrician had made. I wish I could remember the name of Mega Locksmith's electrician (he may have been the owner?) because he was truly skilled and charged a reasonable price. read more

I had to have a strike plate replaced on our security gate at our condo and called Maga Locksmith since they had replaced the same plate a year earlier. I asked about a warranty whcih they said was only 90 days. A bit short. Anyway they did come on time and charged $55.00 for a service call, $169.00 for the plate and $85.00 for labor. The entire job took less than 10 minutes. I asked about a discount since we had replaced the plate one year earllier and I was granted a 10% discount so I paid $279.00 total. After the work was done I called Non Stop Locksmith and was quoted $45.00 service call, $69.99 for the plate and $60-$120 labor which would probably be closer to $60 for this job. So bottom line I was charged $100 more for the same job after the discount. I will not use this company again. read more

Made me wait over an hour outside in a storm for a tech that was "going to be there any minute". When the tech finally called me an hour after the original 20min ETA, he was at the wrong address 2 miles away. Instead of apologizing, trying to get there immediately and offer a discount for this major screw up, he said he was "going to go home since he was too far away". What???!!! What jerks. I wouldn't recommend this company if reliability and honesty mean anything to you, not to say anything about the completely lazy and unprofessional employees.
