Sorry, but a sushi restaurant should be 5 stars or no go! I've been coming to this place for over 15 years and the quality is not the same. The free cucumber appetizer was old with wilted cucumber, the rock shrimp was meh with a tempura base, the Kani salad was very dry with barely any flavor and cucumber strips that were too large for the salad. The crispy rice tuna appetizer was hardly crispy and wouldn't even hold form in chopsticks. Sadly, the most disappointing part was the ginger salad, because the ginger dressing was extremely watered down and didn't taste fresh at all. The walls are cracked with spray foam used to repair damages and it just feels rundown. Quality is not their priority here unfortunately. South New Jersey isn't well known for great sushi...and some of the "great" can be well beyond overpriced. For a local (new) hometown, this is my go to sushi place. Prices are decently reasonable and flavor works well for the entire family. The service, is friendly with a quiet ambiance. It is situated on busy Kings Highway with street parking only. If you are looking for Vegan and Vegetarian, they have plenty of options to pick for a great full belly. It is a BYOB...which is something I can not get use to here in the NE. However, if you are from the West Coast visiting...be prepared for a few difference like California roll and most places not having Lion King roll. First time here and it was great! Nice big space and very fast service. The food was excellent. We got hibachi NY strip and the filet. The meal came with veggies, soup, fried rice, the meat, and noodles. All for a very good price. The fried rice was amazing very talented chef prepared right in front of us and the mix of sauces and the egg just go together so well. The filet was very buttery and delicious and was cooked perfectly. Definitely liked it over the NY strip, but thats just because its a nicer cut of meat. It's impossible to leave hungry as the hibachi comes with noodles (lo mein style), fried rice, fried veggies, and soup and salad. The items were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Good service. TL;DR: I believe they can do better. We had a Friday 8:30 PM reservation for hibachi for eight people on Easter weekend. My wife and I were there early and waiting for the rest of the party when a group of 18 came in and asked if they could be seated. We sat from 830 until 915, enjoying only the small, flavorful cup of soup while we waited as two chefs both were now with the larger party. The food tasted fine, but frankly not as good as we cook at home. By the time one of the chefs came to our grill, he seemed lovely, but he was clearly at the end of a long week. Been there, I could see it in his eyes! Most of us are vegetarian, and we knew ahead if time that there was no tofu or veggie protein option, but we were going for the hibachi experience as well. One person had steak and one had shrimp; most drank only water. The bill was almost $250 with tip and included tax. A complementary appetizer or even just a recognition of the delay would've been appreciated. I even mentioned something casually to the waiter about the delay, but he just laughed it off. We were the only other people in the restaurant by the time we finished. And the party of 18 was long gone! Wish the best for this place, but we will go elsewhere. read more

Megu is easily one of the BEST sushi/hibachi restaurants in town. Let me explain: If you have ever spent anytime in the Cherry Hill/Marlton/Voorhees area, you have no doubt heard SOMEONE mention Megu. I grew up in Cherry Hill and my family came to Megu probably once a month (as a family) and countless other times with friends. I've never had to wait for a table, and I'm always greeted by the owner, Brenda, who is very welcoming and takes amazing care of her customers! I have never had a bad experience at Megu. Even the time that I sat at the hibachi table next to a group of 20+ 8 year old girls celebrating a birthday (that was rough, but their noise was the only issue) Every time I return home (currently reside in NYC) I make sure to plan a night at Megu, where I run into somebody from town that I know EVERY. Megu is a nice Asian restaurant in an unassuming strip mall in Cherry Hill. Cripes, is EVERYTHING in New Jersey in a strip mall?! Don't answer that :) Hottie Esq and I came here for a late lunch on a Saturday. I think they were nearing closing time for their own lunch break, but they sat us and served us with a smile. We ordered several rolls off of the express lunch menu (good variety here). Lunch menu items come with the standard miso soup and ginger-dressed salad. We enhanced it with an order of edamame (lightly salted and perfectly steamed). I hate when you order the sushi roll and pieces combo and they give you that limp-ass butterflied shrimp that's as thin as a piece of paper, or that nasty hard-as-nails fluke. I was thrilled that my pieces were tuna, salmon, and yellowtail only. It's like they knew what I like best...they KNEW! Their sushi rolls were well-sized and the fish was the right temperature. The rice was seasoned nicely. Esq was very pleased, and his happiness is paramount to me. Thank you, Megu! The interior was swanky without being "cold". The outside really doesn't do it any justice. I get why some people may have felt a little lukewarm about this place. It's kind of tucked away in the back of a strip mall. The service can be hit or miss. The decor is not really my style either. But I have two words for you: TUNA DUMPLING. I would seriously walk to New Jersey to order the TUNA DUMPLING. Uh, so best thing to do is look at my picture, but it's basically a faux dumpling that looks like a soup dumpling but instead of a dumpling skin, the outside of the dumpling is made out of tuna. The inside is a combo of creamy crab and something crunchy... panko maybe, I don't know. It is served on a plate with two sauces -- a sweet hoisin type sauce and a creamy wasabi sauce. Combined with the tuna and crab it is deeelicious. It's something I truly crave. Like I seriously could just come here and eat two of these and call it a day. Otherwise, we generally like the sushi. Loved the Halloween roll this last time. The Cha Cha Roll was OK, my hubby really liked it. Also like the New York handroll, with slices of green apple. Sunday and Monday sushi is 30% off. I used to love coming here but no more ever again. The last time we came, they lost our reservation. It was annoying but they were able to accommodate us pretty quickly. Tonight we had reservations for 7. We gave them our name and they just said "ok" and nothing else. We shuffled awkwardly to the side. There were two parties ahead of us of 15 people each. These people had reservations at 6:30 and were still waiting. They had told that party that they could split them up since they couldn't sit them together which is crazy. I thought we may have had better luck as a party of two but sat there for a half hour. As the hostess had never gave us a response, i went up and asked what the rest of the wait would be and she said "I have no clue. I don't have contact with the back hibachi" What kind of answer is that? Isn't it your job to find that out instead of having two parties of 15, me and my significant other, and at least three other couples behind us. I was so aggravated at that point we left. What kind of business gives that answer? And what kind of restaurant takes reservations that they obviously can not accommodate?? I hate to even pull the card but as a fairly successful food blogger for the area I will be letter people know to take their hibachi business elsewhere. I definitely will be. read more

Hands down the worst hibachi I have ever had. For starters, the atmosphere is horrible. Not only is it loud, but what kind of hibachi place has tv's showing football games? Is this a sports bar or a hibachi restaurant? And who thought it would be a good idea to give kids balloon swords? Just what I want when I eat...kids swatting each other. Oh, and food on the floor. No one bothered to pick up the "misses" from the cook tossing food into customers mouths. Now the food: Not very good. Expensive and not at all worth the price. The soup was chicken broth with a paper thin slice of mushroom floating in it. The salad was drenched in ginger dressing. The fried rice was bland. The vegetables were undercooked...still crunchy raw. I had steak and shrimp. The steak was cut into very small squares and was overcooked. The shrimp was also overcooked. It was great knowing that they still do Hibachi table-side and that the food is just as delicious as we remember. But right next to a door that wasn't in use, so my mother complained the whole time about being cold. Firstly, this place is a neighborhood hot spot. Literally everyone that walked in knew each other. So we felt a little out of place. The service. It was mediocre. I had to ask for lemon wedges for my water about 5 times before I actually got them. Tucked into an unassuming strip mall on the outskirts of Cherry Hill, Megu is not to be missed. BYOB...Nuff said. They have a Hibachi area as well but Michelle and I have only been here for Sushi. WE have ordered the Special Rolls (one was Lobster and Mango one night that was awesome). Everything is so fresh I swear I saw one piece of Sashimi trying to swim across our table. The New York Roll with Tuna and Green Apple is another of our favorites. We don't get over to this area often but we do once in a while just for Megu. read more

We accidentally ended up here for my son's 12th birthday. They seated us fairly quick and the waitress came over and took our order right away. But once the order was taken we sat around for a while wondering what was going on. There was no one else(customers) there so we were clueless as to what was going on. After seeing the waitress and people walking by I was ready to just leave and call it a day but the hibachi chef finally made his way through. He was such a sweetheart and we had fun. The food was yummy. And it was a lot! The only thing is he might have mixed up our steak orders. I had a NY strip and he had filet and we def got each others steak. No biggie, we switched it. Then they played a happy birthday song for my son and brought him out some ice cream and we didnt even ask for it! very cute! We took our nephew for dinner tonight and I was pretty happy with the food and the service at Megu Sushi. We were promptly seated and service was very good although they didn't seem to understand that I had made an OpenTable reservation (not that I needed one on a Tuesday night at 6:30). I ordered the Japanese soda, the spicy squid appetizer and the Salmon teriyaki dinner. My dining partners ordered the sushi regular and the sushi and sashimi combo. All dinners were served with miso soup and salad and both of those were good, standard fare. The sushi and sashimi were very fresh and well prepared. My salmon teriyaki was good - a generous portion and the teriyaki sauce was good - not too sweet - but very good even though it was not a 'traditional' Japanese-style teriyaki sauce. As the proprietors are not Japanese, it's understandable. All in all, a very delicious set of dinners, well presented and seasoned. I would definitely go back to Megu Sushi again. read more

A true hibachi lover right here. I love hibachi and I love getting it at a great deal. I tend to go here during lunch on Saturday because hibachi is $13, when it can be up to $30 in the city. The hibachi here is delicious and you get soup, salad and noodles along with your plate. It's a full meal you get and they always cook my steak to perfection. Also, I typically get sushi as well. I'm a consistent spicy tuna lover but their rolls are fully filled with lots of tuna and little rice. They are a steal! Service is always nice, never waiting too long and the people are patient. This restaurant is great for special events, families or a fun date. I definitely recommend trying this place out no matter how close or far you are. read more

I have been to Megu previously but I have never reviewed Megu. The restaurant is in the Tuscany Shipping Center/Strip Mall of of Rt. 70 on the Cherry Hill/Marlton border. This is the same complex that houses Tuscano, Bobby Chez and Miel Patisserie, etc. The restaurant is surprisingly big inside and there are several different rooms for groups. They have a tatami room and also hibachi tables in the back. During the warmer months there is also outdoor seating. This was not the case on my recent visit, as was there on a cold January afternoon. I have mostly been to Megu for lunch so I can't really comment on the their dinner. I almost always order off their lunch special menus during the week and they are very good and reasonably priced. There are several options from Sushi, Udon Noodle Soup, to Bento Boxes of Terriyaki or Tempura or Hibachi. Most of the specials come with Miso soup and salad and some with noodles, California rolls and dumplings. The lunch specials range from $8.50 to about $14.50 depending on the items. I usually get the Chicken Hibachi with noodles and fried rice. For $10.95 with soup and salad it is a pretty good value and the food always tastes fresh. I have tried the Tempura, Salmon and Shrimp and those dishes have also been very good. Service has always been pleasant and attentive. Megu is a good choice if you are in the area. We booked a large party at Megu because we were told paying separately by family was not a problem, which you would assume is exactly what Megu already has to do when separate groups are combined at the same serving station. At our serving station there was 14 of us from various families seated around two separate hibachi grills in the middle of a large U-shaped serving station. So were barley seated when a more senior hostess makes her way over to our station to start taking our food orders, at which time she was promptly reminded to provide us separate family checks as was confirmed when the reservations were made. She immediately cops a very nasty attitude towards everyone like we were asking for something they don't already do for mixed groups and was being firmly unwilling to do separate checks, when the group pushed back some, she said she would compromise some and keep 3 separate checks for the entire group of 14 and, at that point we agreed because we were there to celebrate a B-day and not ruin the event. The fact that she never made any inquires for how we would like the 3 checks separated was a bit concerning. Then it wasn't very long before we realized Megu only provides one cook to do all of the cooking and entertainment for all three of three of their serving stations each having two separate gills operated one at a time, so the one cook has to be continuously rushing from one grill to the next one. While everyone that already seated has to wait very patiently for the same cook to finally make his way over to the grill that serves their half of a two-sided serving station. So literally when everyone at our serving station was completely finished with their meal and the plates were already collected, the other half of our group seated across the room at another station was still waiting patiently for the cook to finally visit the grill that services their half of the service station to get their meals started, while the other half of that station continues to wait. Using only one cook, we literally had half of our party waiting for their bill, while the other half of the group didn't even start eating yet. I found that pretty lame that they won't provide a second cook to prepares the meals for both halves of a station at the same time, there are two other hibachi stations that have two grills in each one with diners waiting on their meals also. So, long story short our invite said we could order whatever we wanted off the menu and everyone would be responsible for their own bill. Now... we notice the very reluctantly accommodating older hostess woman walking towards our station all by herself to deliver the checks and SUPRISE!!! Didn't she possess the balls to bring one big fat group check after making it abundantly clear what was promised to us, she at last second when we just wanted to get out their, the amount of wasting time while she stood her ground was so pointlessly futile. We must of wore the old lady out because she was almost encouraging separate checks for the other half of our party, while we were still trying to figure out who owed what with our group check. I found the women's demeanor pretty mind-blowing when she tried to come across as if she never discussed providing 3 checks at all. So, unless you are OK with this type of rude behaver, I highly recommend to not supporting this establishment, they just seemed a little too comfortable disrespecting their diners while forcing 18% gratuities they know they don't have to earn because they serve groups most of the time. So be forewarned, don't intentionally subject yourself to such a rude and unappreciative establishment like Megu was to us! read more

This is my favorite sushi place in South Jersey. I've never eaten the habatchi, so I can't vouch for that. But the sushi is AMAZING. EAT THE TUNA DUMPLINGS!! They aren't cheap ($10 for 2), but they are hands down the absolute best you will ever eat in your life. Fresh sashimi tuna wrapped around and inside this dumpling with refreshing wasabi sauce drizzled on the plate, and they even have little tempura crunchies inside. MUST HAVE! All the sushi rolls are fresh, very tasty. Make sure you go on Sunday or Monday, when all sushi is 30% off. Can't beat it! Service is great, they are always attentive and nice. Make sure you BYOB!!
