place is ok. communication not great; I have to take off work to make it this. After waiting a month for my appointment, I went in for a cleaning and have a filling replaced. During the end of the cleaning, which was nice, since it was done by the assistant. The doctor comes in and asks if he needs me for anything, I said yes, for the filling. He tells me he needs to book me for another appointment, seemingly since the suction system for the building turns off at a certain time.. the next availability is another month away... So, why not book me with enough time in the first place, or know what I was there for ? I called to voice my complaint and he treats me like a child and I can go elsewhere. He's pretty condescending and heavy handed with his work anyway. read more

My story starts about 13 years ago. I had never been to the dentist on a regular basis and was extremely nervous about going. Stephanie at the front desk met me, she was warm and inviting, and she is still the first person you see when you arrive. I had large spaces between my front teeth as two of my upper teeth never came in. I hated my smile so much I avoided pictures all growing up, and used to cover my mouth when I would smile. On my first visit I ask Dr. Makani if there was anything I could do that was affordable. I really wanted vaneers but it wasn't something I had money to do. We decided to go with Bondings. Now this was "nice" it fixed the gaps in my teeth- but I knew I still wanted vaneers for a natural real look, which as good as the job was on my bondings its not the same. Dr. Makani was so very patient with me. Whenever I needed a touch up or to fix a chip he always happily took care of me. Bondings are not made to last more then 4 or so years. We often talked about the day I would someday get those vaneers. Well the years went on, and on and on. Life happens and before I knew it was 13 or so years later I knew I still wanted to get my Vaneers. After much sacrificing and saving, the day came.. I called Stephanie and made an Apt. to come in and get started. I did not realize how quickly this can all happen, but believe me you will be pleasantly surprised with how fast you can have your new smile. I was able to talk openly and get all the help I needed to find the look I think I wanted, the coloring and types of teeth I wanted and what they would look like. A week later they were in, and I couldn't be more thrilled- all my expectation were blown out of the water. My new teeth looked better then I could have imagined. To say I haven't stopped smiling yet and I constantly am looking at myself in the mirror would be an understatement. I cannot say enough about this dental office and its staff. I thought I had found the BEST dentist in LA UNTIL I decided against all the out of pocket additional recommendations he suggested throughout my visits. His attitude with me quickly changed. I had been very happy going there even after I moved to the valley so that should speak volumes as to how pleased I was with the dental technicians work, she was & has always been very professional & kind I highly recommend her. Dr Makhani didn't see me at all he was just given updates & made suggestions on how I could spend money. He was irritated I used charcoal at home but didn't want to pay him to whiten my teeth. I turned down his suggestion to get implants ($5k+) so he became irritated that I only wanted a partial made. It was downhill from there. In the end his last straw presented itself when he tried to adjust my partial and ended up ruining it by putting too much acrylic on it. It arrived absolutely perfect it just needed minor adjusting but I guess he was over it by then. Opposed to calling me & advising me it couldn't be fixed he waited for me to contact him. He gave me a BS excuse as to why the company he used could not provide me with a duplicate partial. When I asked for the company name he again gave some BS company that did not exist when I googled it. When I told him I was changing dentist he said that would be a good idea to go closer to home. Funny he would rather lose my business than to provide the care I requested even after going out of my way to maintain that location. He closed with a return check in the amount I paid for the partial & a note stating: "Our office wanted to let you know even though we lost money on your case we are still giving you a full refund" which gave me a chuckle, not only did he lose money (his only concern) but he thought his letter would make me feel bad because he had to return my money after HE ruined the partial. THE WORST EXPIRIENCE EVER. DO NOT USE THEM! If I can put zero stars I would. First of all they have the worst customer service including the dentist Dr Makhani. Second if you want them to ruin your teeth this is the best place to go. I came in with a simple cavity on my tooth and I had absolutely no pain. He did some small drilling on my tooth to put in a filling. I am still in pain it's been a few month. I went to another doctor and they told me I need a root canal and said whoever worked on my tooth was the cause of my root canal. I forgot to mention that I had a few more very minor cavities that Dr Makhani tried to take care of and it ended up being root canals after he drilled into a few nerves. Highly NOT RECOMMENDED DO NOT USE THEM! I don't need to mention how unexperienced he and his entire team is. The way they talk to customers is so rude. Honestly might be the best dentist i've been to. The Doc is an honest dude. I came here originally for a chipped tooth. Not only did he give me a fair price but since the chip was a stubborn one he fixed it free of charge twice. The second time he used a brand new laser device that makes the filament stick 10x stronger. And the work has always looked great. I HATE dentists. Let's start there. But I've been seeing Doc now for nearly 16 years, I think, maybe longer and I actually (almost) enjoy going there. He is honest and won't do extra work just because he feels like making more money, which is really important. He is very sensitive to my discomfort and tells me exactly what he's doing every step of the way. The hygienists are gentle and thorough. And the front office staff, especially Stephanie, is exceptional. No BS here. They are welcoming and efficient, always remind me ahead of time when my appointments are and work with your insurance to make sure it's all covered. Take any negative reviews with a grain of salt; most people dislike dentists. I have strayed twice in all these years, and both times I had crappy, unnecessary and expensive work done. I visited Dr. Makhani's office twice in the last seven months for teeth cleaning as he came highly recommended by a friend who gifted me these two treatments. Since I am pretty obsessed with my teeth and I try to keep them clean and white, I thought that the second cleaning--only six months away from the first one--would have been something quick and approximate. Well, no! Dr. Makhani's Igenist, a lovely lady, dedicated an impressive amount of time cleaning under my gums and paying attention to polishing each tooth. I am very impressed by the attention they have dedicated to such a routine procedure and to my teeth. I sought out Dr Makhani after I chipped a molar while eating a cheeseburger. I needed a crown. I guess this happens in your 50's. Teeth don't last forever, damn it! I honestly think that Dr Makhani is the best of all worlds in modern dentistry: 1) He's been licensed in California since 1988. He has a great depth of experience, especially with prosthetics. 2) During his exam and evaluation, he's friendly, energetic, honest and direct, but I think the best word to describe him is EARNEST. He asks for his patient's reactions and input. He gives options. He does the opposite of a hard sell, unlike a couple of other Los Angeles dentists I'd been to in the past. 3) His office is small, comfortable, and his staff is very friendly. 4) Receptionist Stephanie is so wonderful that she deserves a whole paragraph all to herself. She's warm and welcoming, and quite chatty! She makes you feel less like you're in a doctor's office, and more like you're in her living room for afternoon tea. Obviously, this is a nice experience to have before having a dental procedure :) The bottom line... go here and find a nice dental care experience. I have read some of the negative reviews here, and I think the LENGTHS of these reviews speak for themselves... unhappy people will always be unhappy. read more

The absolute best dentist I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I came here with an assortment of problems from other dentists. I made a HUGE mistake of going to other dentists after going here for 5 years along time ago. They basically ruined my teeth and Dr MakhanI FIXED IT ALL! Best of all he won't lie he tells it how it is, my old dentist lied to me and told me i needed to fix things i did not just to get money. Dr Makhani just wants you to be happy. He will ask you 10 times if you are comfortable and make sure you feel good going there. Dr. Makhani is the worst professional of any kind I've ever had the misfortune of interacting with. So much so that I have a hard time believing all of the reviews here are real, and that no negative reviews have been deleted. Short version: Dr Makhani stormed out of a dental procedure because I wasn't getting numb fast enough, then made me leave his office with my tooth half drilled and not at all filled, which then led to more tooth breakage the very next day, days of excruciating pain, and $500 additional in dental work. He cannot control his emotions and should not be in practice. Long Version: On 4/14 at 1PM I arrived at Dr. Makhani's office to have my tooth filled. When I arrived the doctor was sitting in the receptionist area alone. He seemed perturbed and I concluded this attitude was in response to the lateness of his receptionist and dental assistant, who did not arrive from their lunch breaks until approximately 1:07PM. Both ladies were very pleasant and set me up in the exam room. Initially the doctor re-introduced himself and confirmed which tooth he'd be working on and how, only referring to the tooth by its number and the procedure by its medical term, which I found strange since of course I am not a dental professional so I don't know my teeth by number or my cavity by medical type. He emphasized that this would be a quick procedure. He was very curt and rushed. I let him know, as I do all of my dentists, that I don't have dental anxiety but I am slow to numb from novocain shots. I have been this way my entire life and this novocain resistance runs in my family so it's not entirely uncommon. The doctor seemed fine with that and gave me a two shots of novocain, waited a minute or two, and then gave me a third. He then left the room with his assistant. Three minutes later, Dr. Makhani returned to the room with his assistant he started drilling, which I let him know was very painful. As I expected, I was not yet numb from the novocaine. He decided that I must need more Novocain and I agreed to him giving me a few more shots. He then left the room again to wait for these shots to take effect. Minutes later Dr. Makhani returned to the room again with his assistant, and although I told him I did not feel numb yet he started drilling again. This was of course painful. I reminded him that novocain does work for me, it just takes me longer to get numb. In a huff, he declared we'd wait ten more minutes. Dr. Makhani and his assistant returned to the room only five minutes later. He again started drilling, but this time made about 45 seconds worth of progress on the tooth before hitting a nerve that was not yet numb. The pain was blinding and I raised my hand in the customary manner to notify him that it was unbearable. Initially Dr. Makhani did not even stop drilling right away. Once he did, he said to me "well, what do you want me to do?" I didn't understand the question, so I told him that, as the patient, I only know I'm in pain when he is working. Since he is the professional, what he should do should be his informed decision. In response, Dr. Makhani slammed his drill back into it's holder, pulled off his gloves, shouted "well maybe you need to find a new dentist!" and stormed out of the exam room. I was shocked, disgusted, and scared. The dental assistant removed my bib and escorted me back into the waiting room, where Dr. Makhani sat at the receptionist desk, with his arms crossed, fuming. I told him that his behavior was the most unprofessional I've ever seen, and that its unacceptable to be angry with a patient for experiencing pain. He began to argue with me that all dental procedures have some discomfort, and I needed to grow up and deal with that. I am a 35 year old woman who has had eight cavities filled in her life, all under the administration of Novocain shots. After exchanging a few more words with the doctor and watching the receptionist and dental assistant stand behind him in fear (of him, not of me) I left the office. The women look like they've been through a lot with this man. Aside from his nasty, immature behavior, the doctor had drilled, but put in no filling, so I was walking around with an open tooth, which was dangerous and painful. On 4/15 (the next day) , a piece of the tooth that Dr. Makhani drilled but failed to fill broke off. This time it was very painful. I spent the next two days in serious pain before I was able to see yet another dentist who gave me a temporary filling. She told me that because so much of the tooth is now missing, I would definitely need a partial crown, which would cost $500 more than what Dr. Makhani was going to do. She took pictures and x-rays but was unable to confirm that the need for more extensive work was necessitated by the breakage I experienced after my experience with Dr. Makhani. I will be following up with everyone from Yelp to my insurance company to state and local dental association. read more

My last (lady) dentist slept with my boyfriend, so I started the hunt for a new dentist with admitted trepidation. Only requirement: He be a man! I found Dr Mehrdad Makhani through my insurance's preferred provider list, checked out his website and took a chance. Boy, did I hit the Dental Jackpot! Amazing dentist, amazing man. He is gentle, communicative and honest and his charity work makes him exceptional outside his office. I've had 2 Deep cleanings from his hygienists and both were not only pain-free, but the nurses took the time to show me how to improve at home, etc. And you can't talk about Dr Makhani without mentioning Stephanie, his receptionist/office manager, who is the most friendly, delightful and helpful person you'd ever want to meet, either inside or out of a dentist's office. For years I avoided going to ANY dentist out an extreme fear of dentists and dentistry - especially Novocain shots! These shots alone kept me away from any dentist for decades! I only finally sought out a dentist when I *had* to, having heard my doctor propose: to "have all of your teeth pulled out and to get dentures!" I discovered Dr Makhani through the recommendation of a mutual acquaintance, and have been with him for several years now. He is the very first dentist to make me feel comfortable about having dental work done. My fear of Novocain shots and dental pain has all but vanished. I no longer experience the pain that I was always so fearful of for so many years that kept me away from the dentist. Dr Makhani is always gentle, and as he works, he checks in to see how I am doing and if I am comfortable. After a recent move to LA, I chose a dentist down the street from Dr. Makhani. I've always had excellent dental health and highly competent providers, but for the first time in my life I didn't feel that particular dentist was very thorough. So I switched providers and visited Dr. Makhani and his terrific staff for a cleaning. Once bitten (so to speak; it's a dental office after all), twice shy, so I was a bit wary when told the office was running about 20-30 minutes behind schedule. The delay ended up being closer to 20 minutes, and am I glad I didn't reschedule! First up was the lovely and talented Debra, one of Dr. Makhani's charming dental assistants. (She bares sharp objects around my teeth and gums, and I know better than to anger someone like that!) Kidding aside, Debra gave my pearly whites a very thorough scaling -- not my favorite thing -- and was very humorous and sweet-natured. Dr. Makhani gave me a preliminary clean bill of health, which I expected, and he was likewise very professional and pleasant to deal with. He welcomed me to the Makhani "family," and I believe that's exactly how he treats all his patients. This was one of the best, if not THE BEST dental experiences I have ever had. Dr. Mekhani and his ENTIRE staff guided me through the procedure of replacing a MD bridge with a lava zirconia crown/bridge system. You are greeted by Stephanie the receptionist who makes you feel like you've been friends forever and has an infectious laugh, making you feel at ease. When you are taken back to Dr. Makhani, he has such a warmth about him that you relax. I had to have a root canal (long overdue because I didn't have insurance) and he made it seem like a manicure! I picked a dentist from my insurance list based on location... That proved to be the wrong method. I then sat down with my insurance list of dentists and cross referenced it with yelp. It was a tedious process but proved to be a worthwhile endeavor. I've been to Dr. Makhani twice now and I'm going again soon for the third time. Each visit has been a good experience (as good as going to the dentist can be). The office is clean, I haven't had to wait much more than a few minutes, they've seen me on short notice, and the staff is very friendly. I recommend this dentist to everyone. read more

I've been going to Dr. Makhani for about 17 years and I refuse to see any other dentist. He is simply the best. He is very honest and straightforward about any work that needs to be done and I trust him entirely. He'll work with you if you have any type of issues (yes, even anxiety!). His staff is as awesome as he is and I see a dental hygienist at his office, too. Everyone is extremely personable and I've never felt like a "number". Dr. Makhani is the nicest and most caring dentist I've ever been to. I found him on a lark and now travel from Tarzana just to see him because his love for his patients is unparalleled. He cares about his patients so much that he gets emotional about their care. I recently had to have a tooth pulled and Dr. Makhani seemed almost more upset than I was. (and I was pretty upset). He even gave me his cell number to call him if I had any additional questions about my decision to have it pulled. The last thing he wants is for his patients to be in pain. That said, he's very liberal with the lidocaine which I appreciate to no end. Every time you go in for your appointment, he is in good spirits that it's contagious. Dr. Makhani is the kind of dentist you always wished for as a kid, but never got. And now you can. Now let's talk about the wonderful treatment from the staff Dr. Makhani has chosen. Dr. Makhani Became our family dentist and has been an amazing Dentist and Friend. A few things about Dr. Makhani: 1. He ALWAYS greet you with a smile and knows you and your dental history as if you are his only patient. 2. He does NOT brag about his job nor talked bad about any other dentists whose patients have moved to Dr. Makhani. 3. He is very honest. He tells you what issues you have and your options and MOST IMPORTANTLY he doesn't push you/sell you on any of the options. He simply tells you pros and cons about each option. Here is my personal experience. The very first visit to his office he did the regular checkups and cleaning. It was a day I never forget. He sat there and told me my gums are in a rough shape. I was 28 and my pockets were as deep as a 45 years old male. Now my options where simple. Keep your teeth or not :) of course I went with the first option. Then it was the option of gum surgery which beside the cost and pain there was no 100% guarantee if it was going to save my gum and teeth :) The other option was a medical mouth wash. Which made me think... hum... if my gums are bad is this recommandation would save them?! Dr. Makhani went through the process on HOW he was planing to save my gum and teeth which in every cleaning would bleed non stop as there was infection everywhere. He said, you'll use this mouth wash (it's prescription mouthwash) every night. then you do cleaning every 3 months. He also told me the only think about this mouth wash is might stain your teeth but it'll save them. So I took this option and ran with it for a year. Now not only my pockets are to their minimum level, I only do regular cleanings and no deep needed, but I also see the results with my eyes where no bleeding when flossing and no bleeding when cleaning :) HE DOES WONDERS. My wife is also his patients and we have nothing but great experience with every procedure he had done for us. PS. his staff rock too. from front desk to assistant are super super nice people. I really like Dr. Makhani and his staff. Since I moved to Los Angeles 3 years ago, I switched dentists 4 times due to bad experiences with dentists. I'm so glad to have finally found Dr. Makhani because he clearly has a lot of experience and I appreciate his sense of humor. Also, Stephanie, the receptionist has fantastic follow through and all the hygenists are caring and gentle. I postponed teeth cleaning for six years, but Stephanie talked me into it. My cleaning was quick and pain free, which I percieved to be a miracle. Also, they don't try to sell me things that I don't need and explain everything very clearly. I really recommend Dr. Makhani. My dad and I have been patients of Dr. Makhani for 7-8 years now and we've only been provided with wonderful service. He always has a friendly and personable attitude when we visit him that we feel like we're visiting a close friend and his staff reflects that as well. He's always managed to solve any problem I had a best of all he answers my countless barrage of questions without a problem. Wouldn't think of going to anyone else, I highly recommend him if you want a dentist with good communication that's also trustworthy. read more
