The best Chinese food in SLO County! As a Bay Area native (new resident to the central coast), it's been a struggle identifying any decent Asian restaurants down here on the central coast. I'm so glad we tried this place - we've had their sesame chicken (to die for), mongolian beef (sometimes spicy - beware), combo fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, wor won ton soup (my fave), and a few other dishes here and there. My grandchildren and I visited Mei's chinese restaurant in Shell Beach and got the pupu platter for our appetizer, which was impressive. It had a little fire in the middle to keep the food warm and a variety of delicious food. For our main meal, we got barbecue pork and orange chicken and shrimp with snow peas. All of the above were also very good. Although there wasn't a lot of staff, the ones that were there were really helpful and fast. All in all, the food was pretty good and the service is great and the helpings were rather generous in size. Now we have a meal for the next two nights! It was an interesting night. First off a Russian couple can in and sat right behind us. Talking loud doing business on the phone and demanding no pork touch his food to the waitress. He was facing my back and kept sneezing. Then another came in and she was just a Karen. She Kept ripping her husband apart and doing it very loud. I will start by saying this was our only negative experience during our whole two week trip. I don't want anyone to be as disappointed as we were so I am writing this review. We ordered the seafood supreme which contained a few meager chunks of fish, two shrimp and one scallop. We also ordered another dish from their healthy menu recommendation with canned mushrooms and broccoli just after 12pm when they opened midweek. Both dishes were a disappointment and inedible. The eggplant dish we included was passable though nothing special. Our dog even turned his nose up at our offering as he also found the broccoli fibrous and poor quality. Rice is a separate charge. Though we had ordered two "fried rice" and one steamed rice we received two steamed rice and one fried rice of questionable quality. It contained only soy sauce lacking character, vegetables or flavor. We were charged $72 and did not receive an itemized bill. read more

Super filthy. Dining area is dirty and the same garbage stuck between the large front window and seats has been there for years! Windows don't get cleaned and the front door is disturbingly dirty! Restrooms reek and I can only imagine the kitchen. If they clean the restaurant I would consider going back. The food is good. read more

We visited early on Saturday, it was just before 5pm, so restaurant was not at all busy yet. We ordered two of the Family dinners off the back page, can't remember which one. Emily, our waitress, took our order and shortly the soup was served.. the soup was hot and tasty. Next the appetizer, BBQ pork & fried shrimp. The pork was nice size and texture, with good taste. The shrimp, unremarkably generic. The main meal was soon served, chicken vegatables and beef w/snow peas. Both were tasty and served adequately hot. I thought the serving portions were only average in size, difinately not huge. We finished off both plates. The steamed rice was bland and I thought over cooked. Would get the fried rice next time. The place is clean and is very comfortable for family dining. Emily, our waitress, was the best part of the dinner experience. Ordered the small hot and sour soup and General tso's chicken HIGHLY not recommend this place AT ALL! Location is next to the beach which is a majority of the reason why it even got 2 stars. Granted, besides Thai and Hawaiian food in the local area, there is barely any Asian food around. Parking is non-existent, the dining area is clustered together and nobody was there (bad sign). Hard to get in the door when your elderly and have to assist a blind elderly husband the front door stairway needs to be remodeled. I heard the bathrooms are down some very narrow stairs. The food is good but the one room is very small and we are all seated too close for comfort now that the corona virus is with us. I don't like there new menus as almost everything is all art. I like the old menus with 3 choices of dinners all for a quoted price which was very reasonable. The help are very friendly and helpful. read more

this was the worst food i have ever eaten in my life. ordered orange chicken without scallions / green onions as i am allergic. i made it very clear. got our food and it was full of scallions. they remade it miraculously fast and it was clearly the wrong coating on the chicken - it was tempura or something - it was so bad but they did not care at all. my friends meal was equally disgusting. not sure what they consider fried rice and lo mein but i would not serve that food to my dog let alone charge 50$ for that dinner. waste of money and horrible service read more

The best Chinese food in the County of San Luis Obispo. Prove me wrong. I dare you. Soooo ... that's a pretty low bar, admittedly. We just don't have a ton of great options here! Mei's is consistent and easy. One of my favorite things about dishes from Mei's is how light they are - and veggie focused - compared to a lot of the competitors. I don't think I've ever had a heavy, greasy dish here!! That said, if you're looking for the type of ambiance that's going to impress your date... you're in luck ... they offer 'to-go'!! I just ordered their food tonight. Sweet and Sour Chicken - was hard crusted, over cooked chicken which came with nothing else (other places have onions and other goodies in it), with sauce on the side. Some of the hard crusted pieces didn't even have chicken in it - just fried dough. The Sizzling Seafood Platter was just meh. I got Lo-Mein and it was inedible (I threw it away). No real taste, but had a fishy weirdness to it (I got veggie Lo Mein). I just hope we don't get food poisoning... bleck! read more

We called in the order as soon as they opened and was told it would be ready in 2 HOURS because they had party platters to make. They eventually said we could pick it up in 40 minutes instead which was nice because I would have gone elsewhere if I had to wait 2 hours. They seemed overwhelmed with the amount of orders pending. I was very disappointed. This was my second visit and tonight I brought my mother for dinner. We ordered Chicken and Veggies and Kung Pao Chicken each at 16.95. Instead they brought another dish...I think it was called Crispy Beef (18.95). I wasn't sure that it wasn't Kung Pao Chicken until we tasted it. The server hurried over at that moment and said she had served us the wrong dish in error. I said it was ok we would accept what they served us. She said but I have already made the Kung Pao Chicken....can't I just take it home and that she would credit us. I said well ok but this is a lot of food. (Since she said she would credit me it was fine. I wrongly assumed she didn't want to waste the dish) When the bill came, she didn't credit me but charged me $18.95 extra for the dish I didn't order and was after all her mistake. Anyone who lives along the Central Coast knows, good Chinese is tough to find. I was surprised to have this little spot be recommended to me in Shell... "Wait...where is it!?" I was told to order the grilled eggplant in plum sauce. "Really?!" But now I've been back twice, and the answer is "Yes. Freakin' really." It's amazing. I had no idea this was a thing and now I want it all the time everywhere I go. The pork fried rice is not going to blow your mind but it's darn yummy. The moo shu pork (pancakes) was really good, and again, the sauce they served it with (like a Chinese BBQ) was just a perfect addition. I've had a few others and it was all good. But seriously, try the fried eggplant with plum sauce. The service s polite, and the place is small and quaint. I would probably prefer a take out order here, to dine-in only because the decor is not so authentic I feel I need to stay. That being said, I've eat lunch here both times and had a fine time. But the quality of the food I think is great compared to other spots around us. It really is worth trying out. read more

My friends Mark & Kerri know how to live life right. Two beautiful children...a home several hundred yards from Shell Beach...he is a local business owner and doesn't have to answer to any bosses. They are not wealthy...but with a home filled with love they don't want for much...I've always admired how they somehow figured it all out when most people struggle with getting it so. The fact they are also two lovely people made me anticipate greatly the portion of the recent Central Coast where we would spend time with them. The first night in the Pismo/Shell Beach area we agreed to have dinner. We sat a chatted for a bit in the backyard of their funky beach cottage...it is a small place on a huge lot with mature trees, colorful native plants...and chickens running around too :) For dinner us and our kids went to Mei's Chinese Restaurant. They kept apologizing because they know I love food but Mei's was all right...just a small business serving mostly locals and a few tourists who wander in. The food is certainly the Americanized Chinese but the service was efficient and friendly,the food was good and hearty...and they allowed BYOB at only $6.00...sweet...I brought a 2008 Ken Wright She Vineyard Pinot from Oregon that was tasting beautifully. Best dishes was the sesame chicken, Orange Chicken, pot stickers and the Moo Shu Pork. Maybe I'm overrating a place like this because of the company I was with...but it really was a lovely, lovely evening... We ended with a walk to Shell Beach and more catching up type conversation. I have not tried Chinese food on the central coast since I moved here. Someone recommended this restaurant Ok give it a try. Inside seating was available. Service was very good. Ordered the sweet and sour pork. Chicken Chow mein , crispy garlic beef and shrimp with snow peas. It all came out quick and tasted delish. This is basic Americanized Chinese food. I call it "chinese" because it has lost the right to be a proper noun. Another reviewer referred to it as "Americanese." So if that's what you're looking for, you might enjoy this. This area and the tourists who come here are pretty darn whitebread and often their reviews reflect a lack of experience with authentic ethnic cultures. So they may eat here and say, "Wow! How exotic!" This place isn't that bad but you couldn't throw a rock in Oakland without hitting a chinese restaurant that does a better job than this place. Mei's slogan should be, "You Can REALLY Taste the Salt!" The other secret ingredient is MSG. Lots of it! We had the wor won ton soup. Salty, lacking the stuff that makes it so awesome in the Bay Area. No bok choy, no bbq pork, no mushrooms, few shrimp. Just regular won ton soup w/ extra chicken and celery. We had the pu pu platter, which I ordered w/ the usual 5th grade glee (even my 9 year old was finding that joke old). Hey, I've seen A Bug's Life like a 1,000 times! Fast food served around a completely pointless tiny hibachi. I'm sure that somewhere in Hawaii (or maybe just Trader Vic's) I could find an interesting selection of appetizers and a use for the grill. But not at Mei's. We ordered the walnut shrimp, which was really the best thing because it was much less sweet than usual and wasn't completely drowned in mayo. It actually worked quite well! Finally, we had the kung pao "3 flavor", which was beef, chicken, and shrimp. Meh, it was pounded meat and vegetables served in a corn starch glaze w/ lots of MSG and some chile peppers. The flavors didn't even get a chance to mingle so it wasn't spicy unless you ate a pepper. They say they serve "fine food." Okay, sure, it's fine if you have the munchies. Quite good given that they're located where there aren't many Chinese food options. The local clientele are mostly non-Asian and the menu reflects that reality. But they still do American-Chinese food VERY well, so it's a solid recommendation from me. After your meal, take a walk to the beach, which is about quarter of a mile away. read more

I came here because a local friend of mine recommended them. I ordered some fried wontons, walnut shrimp with sweet sauce and Dry-fried string beans. The fried wontons weren't what I expected. I thought it was cream cheese on the inside, which the waitress confirmed it was, but it was sweet, almost flavorless. Had to dunk them into the sweet and sour sauce for consumption. Ended up not finishing and did not take them home with me. I saw a lot of good reviews about the walnut shrimp so I was excited because it is one of my favorite dishes to order at a Chinese restaurant. The walnut shrimp were probably the worst I've ever had! I did not like how they were cooked at all. They were also quite bland and the sweet sauce was almost flavorless. I would not pay $14 for the quality and amount of shrimp I received. Bleh... some of you yelpers are missing out on awesome honey walnut shrimp if you like the stuff here. The string beans were ok. Kind of hard to mess up, but nonetheless was bland like everything else. I ate it because I need more vegetables in my diet, bland or not. Hah! So... yea I've had better Chinese food elsewhere and probably won't be coming back here again. My sad search for Dim-sum continues, but I already know there's none around this area... :( read more

I looked this up on Yelp and went based upon the reviews. I later learned that the locals highly praise this place; and with good reason. The food is quite good, the service is good and the decor is fresh and pleasant. It was quite busy on a weekday evening early, so I would presume it gets busier during normal dinner hours. So I recommend getting there early or expecting a wait. But, it is worth it if you are looking for good Chinese. Chinese is a bit hard to find here on the central coast. read more
