We came to escape the heat of the valley and ran across this little place. We ordered broccoli beef, Orange chicken, vegetable fried rice, chicken chow mein, and dry fried green beans. We all agreed that everything was very good... And we're all picky! The beef was the most tender we've had anywhere- even from some of the best places in Napa. The orange chicken was also a huge hit with very tender chicken and a tasty orange sauce that wasn't overly sweet. If you love fresh green beans we highly suggest that you try them- You'll love them! A descent 4 Star Chinese take out .here's what we ordered to take out - shrimp fried rice, sweet and sour shrimp and the salt and pepper fish. All dishes were tasty and felt fresh. Portion sizes are descent and the prices are ok. Would be good if they can provide plastic fork and knife for those who don't want to eat with chopsticks . "Meh's Chinese." The restaurant is run down and in need of an upgrade. The food is mediocre at best. All the veggies tasted like they had been previously frozen or from a can. The meats were chewy in an odd way and definitely had been previously frozen. A lot of the dishes really lacked flavor and we tried several things. (Lo mein, orange chicken, sesame beef, mushroom shrimp, brown rice) They don't have any fountain drinks, everything is from the can or bottle, so no refills. The shrimp appetizer some how managed to be too crispy- like difficult to bite through?? The spring rolls and potstickers were good, so maybe just ordering appetizers is the safest bet. Service was just okay. I didn't like how they kept reaching over us and rearranging our dishes to cram all the entree plates on the tiny table. After all that, the bill came and we paid $100 for the experience and only 4 people. Paying that much for what we got literally left a gross taste in my mouth. If they worked on remodeling the dining area and replaced ingredients with fresh meats and veggies, I think they could really improve. read more

Very good people person at checkout, It was 4:45 pm so nobody was sitting at the tables , Not really fancy but it gets the job done, The pot stickerts and the mu sho pork were excellent, The sweet and sour chicen was a bit dry, All in all a very good dinnner for a reasonable, but not cheap price. read more

Don't let the outside fool you, the food's actually pretty good. My first time ordering from Mei's, as I heard the food was pretty good, then checked the consensus here on Yelp, so decided to give it a try for take out. Being from the East Coast Tri-State area (NJ, PA, NY) I'm very familiar with great Chinese food. So we've been looking for a place to try out for a few months. Nice crowd for a Tuesday night, my food was waiting for me after 10 minutes, so they're quick. Everything was very fresh tasting, eggrolls, wonton soup, pork fried rice was really good, and the deep fried chicken with garlic sauce was tasty as well. Never gonna come back to this restaurant again. This restaurant is absolutely trash. This is the first restaurant I've ever been to that requires tip and writes the exact amount of tip I need to pay, which was quite ridiculous. That actually would have been fine if I were satisfied, and I normally do give tips, but I was not satisfied at all when I came here, for several reasons. First, the restaurant is not clean. I started coughing right when I entered the restaurant, and i didn't have a cold or anything like that. Second, my dad asked whether he could drink alcohol he brought himself, and the answer was a no. We were not happy, because all other restaurants my dad went to allowed him to do so. Third, the food there isn't good either. We ordered several dishes, and most of them were very salty. I especially don't like the fried eggplant we ordered, because it was very greasy. read more

Greasy, over-sauced Chinese food. It reminds me of 1980s Chinese (American) food from when I was a kid, and not the good places. Almost everything is deep fried, and not in a good way. The batter falls off everything and gets drowned in the starchy sauces. The tea was the worst I've ever had, it had a burnt and dusty taste. And who charges $3 for a small side of plain rice per person for three people, especially instead of bringing a large pot of rice that no way would have cost $9? I use the Panda Express test for local Chinese places since I know they aren't going to be as good as Bay Area and LA area Chinese restaurants, and it failed. If it's not at least as good as Panda Express then it's not worth going back, and Panda Express has better food then this place. The only reason I gave this place two stars and not one was because I've had worse (unfortunately) and bad Chinese food is still Chinese food. Avoid this place and ignore the "Best of SLO" stickers on the window from past years. I love Mei's! My fiancé and I live in Shell Beach and venture up to Mei's for some good Chinese food whenever the craving strikes. My favorites are their orange peel beef, chow fun, and hot and sour soup. Not a big fan of the seafood, but I think that's personal preference. For a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant, it's a bit pricey. But the food is good quality and the portions are big enough for leftovers. Also, I've seen a few reviews about the "bedside manner" of the workers, but I've never experienced anything negative. The workers are pleasant and work their butts off. Have a little empathy, people. All in all, if you're thinking about trying Mei's, do it. Good food in a quiet community. read more

We have had Mei's food several times now, both eat-in and take out. And we really like it.The last time we got Mongolian beef, Plum tree chicken, and twice cooked pork. We loved all three dishes. The service was very good and it's a cute little hole in the wall kind of place. The sad thing is that there really are no decent Chinese restaurants on the central coast. This place isn't horrible, but the portion sizes are small (and I don't eat a lot), some of the veggies are obviously from cans, lots of items that aren't supposed to be deep fried and loaded with salt, are. I didn't ask if there was MSG, as I didn't think restaurants were using it anymore, but my daughter's tummy wasn't right for about 24 hours after eating here. The restroom in the basement is downright scary-don't let your child go alone. I'm sorry, but there just isn't any excuse for this place to not try harder. This is one of our favorite places. In a sea of Thai and sushi restaurants on the Central Coast, we were really happy to find Mei's. Everything we've tried has been tasty. The waitstaff is polite and efficient, which I prefer to chatty. There is often a full house, and the seating area is rather small, which can make for a bit of a wait for dinner, but it's worth it. After having read that this place was the "Second Best" Chinese restaurant on the Central Coast (New Times magazine), my wife and I decided to drop in last night. Parking on the street was no problem, and getting seated was a breeze. The place was small, very small, but not overly crowded on a week night, even during 'tourist season', leading me to believe that this place may actually be one of those hidden local treasures. For such a small place, the menu seemed pretty comprehensive, encompassing Cantonese, Mandarin and Hunan style dishes. Whenever we go to an unfamiliar place, we usually go for a 'basic' meal. Our thinking on this is that, if you can't do the basics, why bother with anything else. That being said, we opted for one of the several combination/family meals. The young lady who was the primary host/server was very friendly and seemed to really caare what kind of impression this place would have on customers. She took our order, and within a few minutes, plates and bowls began arriving. The Hot Sour Soup was perfect! Not too vinegary, just the right amount of pepperiness. The egg rolls, though not homemade were cooked perfectly and came with several slices of Char Siu park - DELISH! The 2 entrees we ordered were very good, that being the Broccoli Beef and the Combination Foo Yong. The beef was very tender and tasty and the broccoli was cooked well, but not soggy. The Combination Foo Yong appeared to be a good commercial grade, but was cooked perfectly and had a very good gravy containing shrimp, chicken and veggies. The server checked on us frequently, at just the right times, and when we finished, the check and requisite fortune cookies arrived promptly, and the receipt came back just as quickly...a trait I seriously approve of. I REALLY hate having to camp out so long, waiting for the check, that I end up getting hungry again. My opinion is that this place is definitely going to be on our regular dine-out rounds, perhaps as often as weekly, as their pricing and service is just a bit better than their food, which is very, very good!! read more

So, I figured by the 5th time I visited this place, I should write a review. :) I thoroughly enjoy this restaurant every time and usually take orders to-go. The two ladies that work the front and register are fairly nice. Phone orders are quick and everything is made to order, piping hot and fresh. The food here is great! I really like their wonton soup and their chow fun. My husband loves their walnut shrimp. The batter is perfect and the sauce it's drizzled over is tasty. Add a touch of the lemon provided and you're good to go. The spicy honey chicken/shrimp is pretty good too. Once, I requested the lemon chicken, but with the battered pieces like in the orange chicken. They happily obliged and tossed the chicken pieces in the lemon sauce without any hassles. Awesome service! I used the restrooms once. It was kind of weird. You have to go down these steep stairs down into the bottom floor. But, the bathroom was nice and clean so that's what matters. read more

It wasn't a good first impression, nor was the unfriendly lady behind the counter but the food was delicious. I had the General Tso's Chicken and my husband had the Mongolian Beef. I thought it was really strange that they don't come with rice - it's extra, so be aware. My wife and I ate here a few weeks ago for lunch. I was kind of disappointed. We ordered the eggplant in plum sauce which was pretty good. I had dinner combo A with chicken Lo mein, egg drop soup, egg roll & fried wonton, sweet and sour pork, and fried rice. The egg drop soup had a distinct ham hock and beans flavor. It did not taste like egg drop soup. The rice and chicken Lo mein also had the same taste. The chicken Lo mein wasn't as bad as everything else with the ham hock and beans taste. Maybe they used old oil??? I don't know, but it was so weird! My wife ordered dinner combo B with chicken cashew nuts, egg drop soup, egg roll & fried wonton, sweet and sour pork, and fried rice. I enjoyed the chicken cashew nuts dish. It didn't seem to have that much of the ham taste to it which was nice. We also ordered the fried shrimp appetizer which was really oily and the batter was pretty hard. Not light, crunchy and fluffy like I'm used to. Overall, I don't think I would go back. So we're in the Central Coast, hours removed from LA and SF. But Mei's has great Chinese food, considering location. I had never heard of this place but my Chinese teacher really liked it. So that has to mean something! The service is fast and surprisingly friendly. The food itself is good, overpriced by LA/SF standards. But we're not there, are we? So it beats Panda Express any day. It's the standard Chinese food, but I'm impressed that exists here. My favorite dishes would probably be the noodle or fried rice dishes. And their sweet and sour soup is stellar as well. My only complaint is the music. One of the times I went, the CD was skipping the ENTIRE time. Drove me crazy! But if you're in the area and craving Chinese food, you can either learn to make Chinese food or go to Mei's. read more
