A nice Asian / sushi place in the Chevy Chase / friendship heights area. Located across from Whole foods and above Panera. The atmosphere was Asian fusion (modern/traditional) and the food was wonderful. I wanted sushi but my wife wanted hibachi. Although they do not have hibachi tables they have simulate meals offered as well as a full sushi menu. I had the salmon special and I would have it again. Delicious sushi and sashimi. My wife had beef with broccoli and the sauce was perfect. Not salty as some tend to destroy it. My daughter had a salmon role that was also great. Meiwah has consistently decent Chinese food! We have been going here for a long time. All of the dishes have a lot of flavor and taste super fresh. Their menu has a good ratio of healthy/unhealthy dishes. Personally, my favorites are the bok choy with black mushrooms and the eggplant with garlic sauce entrée. The bok choy with black mushrooms is super flavorful and has a lot of ginger and garlic in it. The mushrooms are cooked perfectly and are really juicy. The eggplant is so soft and tender and delicious, though it's not spicy enough and it's better when you ask for light sauce. The dumplings here also really good because they're super soupy and have a ton of filling. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, it's a little bit classier than the average place. I have been a fan of this location for about a decade. I love the sushi and the chinese food offerings. You have to remember that this is a chinese restaurant serving sushi. Don't expect Sushi Damo type of selection. But for a chinese restaurant their sushi rocks and the prices will keep you going back for more. The general tso is one of my favorites in all of the land. I want to give this restaurant 2 negative stars, but that is not an option on yelp. We ordered food for delivery and an hour after it did not arrive, we contacted the restaurant numerous times by phone but no one answered. We walked over to the restaurant to be met by a scene of chaos with a mob at the door, many of whom were looking for their orders. We tried the back entrance, and there was a line going out the down wrapping down two flights of stairs. We waited another hour in line and had to pushed our way to the front to be met by one person from the restaurant behind a small plastic table. That person left for 15 minutes and came back to inform us that he could not locate our order, despite the fact that we produced for him confirmation of our order sent to our email. We went home and three hours later, the food arrived at the concierge desk where we were staying. We had already left that delivery address so the food was left at the front desk for days. Do not consider going to this restaurant. They took over one hundred dollars from us and I am sure they took from many others their money that day as well, given the mob scene outside their restaurant. read more

We needed a table for 2 on a quiet Sunday evening, there were 3-4 empty tables by the windows. A grumpy male waiter was visibly irritated when I asked for one of the window tables - he made 0 attempt to disguise his annoyance that we didn't want to sit in the little poky table at the back. I was shocked that he made no attempt to hide it and he made several faces about it, quite incredible behavior for someone in customer service. We returned because its so hard to get edible Chinese food in DC. I wish we hadn't bothered. Attached is a photo of a maggot or some kind of dead slug that was on my broccoli. Unfortunately I didn't hear the waitress tell me the broccoli would be free. When the grumpy male waiter asked if we wanted more broccoli I told him yes please, but by the time it came out, we wanted it to go, this also irritated the grumpy waiter man. I was very polite under the circumstances of finding a dead slug in my broccoli, and overall no service staff were particularly friendly towards us. I would have thought it would be a good idea for them not to charge us at all under the circumstances, but apparently dead slugs and maggots in food is not free, I misunderstood. The grumpy waiter started to argue with me that I needed to pay for the broccoli to go. Our whole meal should have been comped. We won't return, obviously. I would give Mei Wah 6 stars if could and the sixth star would be for Sally who is the best bartender and makes one mean Mai Tai! The sushi, though surprising for a Chinese restaurant, is really great. Finally I have to put a word in for the owner, Larry, who always gives me a big hello and whom I often see helping out at the take out counter when he could be home counting his money or out meeting big celebrities. Along with the sushi, I recommend the Tinkling Bell Pork and the Orange Tofu. My wife loves Singapore Noodles and daughter always gets Beef Lo Mein. I really want to believe that the chef was sick and it was an off night for them but I also really don't want to go back and waste my hard earned money on another disappointing meal. Due to how many people we know who love this place, we decided to check it out. The food was pretty on par with most other Chinese food places around here, I don't understand the hype. The place has a definite vibe, and they cater to regulars more than newbies. The lo mein was decent, nothing to write home about and the beef and broccoli was just decent as well.. We took a group of 13 people here for dinner while at a conference. The staff did a great job and they took great care of us. Our table was set and ready for us to arrive. They did have to fit a few odd shape tables together to make it work, but it met the need. I was amazed at the spread of food that they brought us. We started with an egg drop soup that was exactly what you would expect. It was served with deep fried wonton skins for you to add to the soup if you like. We then had a seaweed salad. This was actually my favorite dish of the meal because it was not something that I would have normally ordered and it tasted delicious. When the plates started coming out with the entree's there were huge and piled high with food. We had a wide range of different dishes and they all tasted like the Chinese food I am used to. While I have moved to more Thai, Korean and Vietnamese dishes if I am picking the restaurant, this was good honest Chinese. The General Taos chicken was very good. Crispy fried chicken with the signature sweet sauce and the small hot peppers. The stir fried shrimp with steamed vegetables were very good, the shrimp was well prepared and the sauce subtle in its flavor for you to be able to taste the shrimp and the vegetables. We also had a beef dish with onions and bell peppers that was very good and a lo mein noodle that was classic in it's flavors. We ended the meal with some fresh cut oranges that were flavorful and juicy. There was so much food there was no way we could finish it, and we felt terrible leaving it behind since we were all staying in a hotel. My family ordered takeout this past week from Meiwah. My child has a severe nut allergy so we made sure we ordered nothing with nuts and also wrote it on our order after every entree. After our food was delivered, I called the restaurant to confirm no nuts. They explained that they only make two dishes at the restaurant with peanuts so what we ordered would be safe for our child. After sharing a mushroom dish, we found a peanut on my husband's plate. I cannot even describe the horror and anxiety of finding a peanut on the plate. The dishes we ordered did not have nuts in their ingredients. This means that a) our nut allergy was not shared with the kitchen and b) the restaurant DOES NOT CARE that they could have potentially killed my child. Thankfully, my child did not eat the peanut and we were lucky that benadryl and monitoring him for 6 hours for difficulty breathing was all we had to do. I do not write this review lightly, only so that other people with food allergies know the risks, even when you make every effort to protect your loved one. read more

This place suffers the same fate as ever single other restaurant in Friendship Heights - nice, clean, buttoned down and almost completely devoid of any personality at all - this place, Lias, even Indique Heights, Clydes, etc etc. All reasonable, all good enough if you fancy what they offer and you are in the area, but in no shape or form would anyone actually come here specifically to this, or any other of the neighborhood's restaurants. Please, aspiring restaurant entrepreneur, bring your cool, stylish, flavorful, interesting, different, place here - this is the one neighborhood in all of DC that is completely wihout a decent unique destination style restaurant. The menu is more american-chinese but I was expecting more authentic. Oh well. My friend and I had met up for dinner and we got the spring rolls and dumplings. He had a horrific look on his face saying the food smelled weird but I thought it was fine. The spring roll had meat in it and he didnt like it. He got the black bean pepper beef and I had the squid. He flat out refused to eat it saying it looked like crap. At this point I feel bad for the restaurant. The food was not great but it's not ghastly horrific. The food at Meiwah was pretty decent! The restaurant itself is really nice - the layout and the decor. The servers were very friendly and gave me a chance to practice some of my mandarin. The lo mein was perfectly seasoned. The jiaozi (dumplings) were awesome. The Peking duck was obviously not comparable to duck actually eaten in Beijing - but it was close enough. Some of my friends ordered sushi - and that was pretty tasty. I wouldn't say that Meiwah could stand to be better than restaurants in Chinatowns in Boston, NY, Philly or San Francisco, but for a Chinese place in DC/Maryland, I'd go again and recommend it to friends. read more

Meiwah is great! It is not super expensive and has a lot of good options. They have great Chinese food- and they offer healthy options! I recommend the orange chicken sautéed- delicious. Also, they have great sushi- which you don't find at Chinese Restaurants because it is not a Chinese dish! But I always get the Alaska roll or the shrimp tempura roll on the side. The parking is great if you are able to get a spot in the lot downstairs, but can be difficult if all of the spots are taken. read more

Well, previously I would have given this place a 4-star rating. But tonight, after taking 2 hours for the food to arrive, it was absolutely awful. Followed up with some awful customer service. I've gotten the sesame chicken here multiple times before with no issues. This time, the sauce tasted disgusting. I'm not sure how sesame sauce would be spoiled, but it certainly tasted it. After my fiance called to complain and request a replacement, the woman on the phone stated that "you must not like fried dishes." We repeatedly told her we've had this dish before without issue, but she kept insisting we must not like fried dishes... It felt kind of like when you call the cable company and they ask you 10 times if you've restarted the cable box, while you've already tried that and everything else you can think of. The restaurant was willing to have someone pick up the order, show it to the chef, and then if he agreed, THEN they'd send out something else. This is after already having waited 2 hours, so we told them not to bother. I wish I had paid with credit card so that a refund or disputed transaction would be possible.
