Mekong River is a popular Vietnamese restaurant on E 71st St in Tulsa which I've often frequented due to vicinity to the area. I've eaten the Vietnamese pho at this restaurant several times along with a few other entrees. The pho bowl of this restaurant is too small making it difficult to fit all the pho vegetables inside, especially when they fill the small bowl almost to the rim. The best feature of the pho was the meats which are my favorite of all the Vietnamese restaurants in Tulsa. The broth was okay, and pho noodles were soft without much texture. They always seemed to be out of fresh spring rolls, making me to doubt whether they even have them anymore. Service was very slow at Mekong River. On weekdays, there's usually only server available whether the restaurant is busy or not. One other thing I really like about Mekong River is the pre-brewed hot tea, giving the tea that mild bitter taste. read more

I really loved the vibe at Mekong River--it felt like being transported to a small restaurant in Vietnam. You walk in and seat yourself at a table. The menu isn't big, which I appreciate. I ordered the Cornish hen over fried rice, and wow, that was a great choice. First of all, it comes with a soup of your choice, which turned out to be basically a mini pho. I was only expecting the broth, so that was a nice surprise. The broth was a bit on the sweet side, so keep that in mind if you prefer a different flavor profile--but I thought it was yummy. The main dish came out a little later, as they were short-staffed and running behind. That said, the lone waitress was killing it--serving all the tables by herself--and despite being quite busy, she was gracious and attentive. Now, the Cornish hen was fantastic. The skin was thin but perfectly crispy, and the meat was flavorful. The fried rice wasn't anything special, but it was topped with a fried egg, which I liked. The salad that accompanied the meal was fresh with a hint of sweetness that paired nicely with everything. Oh and as for the Vietnamese coffee, it was just alright. Haven't been here in a while since the ownership change, so I decided to stop by again. Unfortunately, the broth doesn't taste as authentic as it used to. The flavor seems different -- not as rich or deep as before. I also ordered the chicken rice, and it was very dry and lacked the flavor it used to have. That dish was always a highlight for me, so it was pretty disappointing. Service wasn't as fast as I remember either. The wait time was longer, even though it didn't seem very busy. During our summer vacation in Tulsa, we were craving Vietnamese soup, as we often enjoy it at our favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Canada. That craving led us to Mekong, and we were pleasantly surprised to discover that they also serve Burmese cuisine, especially Mohinga, Myanmar's famous noodle soup. My wife and children ordered their usual pho dishes, while I decided to try something different and ordered the Mohinga. It was absolutely delicious and full of authentic flavors. If you enjoy exploring new cuisines, I highly recommend giving it a try. The food was excellent, but what made our experience even better was the outstanding service. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The dining environment was also warm, clean, and comfortable, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing family meal. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we returned before continuing our trip to Florida. We simply couldn't stop thinking about the food! We will definitely come back on our next visit to the Tulsa area. I would rate this restaurant 10/10. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Tulsa. Once the weather starts leaning to the colder side I crave Phở and there is something magical about the broth they use here, everything seems to have gotten mover flavorful with each bite . I can't really fault anything on that front, I usually get the special Phở but some of the ingredients in that one may not be to everyone liking but I think its delicious. If you are lucky enough to get the spring rolls they are large and leave just wanting more and makes it feel like you can make a meals of those bad boys. I like the little bit of heat they add to the peanut sauce it just adds so to the spring rolls. I have had a few of the apps and they are no slouch either the wings or the eggplant are both solid options. In the summer months I usually lean towards the Vermicelli bowls or some noodles they are both solid options because the food is so good and the staff is friendly and helpful that's why this is an awesome neighborhood spot. read more

We have enjoyed most of the dishes we've ordered here. Our two favorites are bun and lemon grass chicken. Lemongrass, in my opinion, has a delicate but delicious flavor. We grow lemon grass but we haven't mastered cooking with it as this restaurant has done. The egg rolls in the bun is nice and crisp and adds a different and pleasant texture to the rest of the dish. The only thing we've tried that we didn't like was ramen. It might just be personal taste, but it was extremely bland. The soft noodles, broth, and meat were all lacking flavor. Let's all agree when ordering Vermicelli salad aka Bun Cha Gio, the fish sauce is essential to a great dish. first impression is the restaurant decor is dated, which i personally love. it's giving 80's-90's realness with the pastel walls and bathrooms. obviously that's not the main reason anyone stops here. they have to be stopping in for the incredible food they serve. that's just it too. the food is incredible and very fresh. i genuinely loved everything from the broth, to the meat, to the fresh veggies alongside. i also got the spring rolls as my appetizer, which i also enjoyed. the previous complaints of unseasoned food seem to have been taken into consideration since everything i ate tasted amazing and full of flavor. you do have to ask for jalapeños for the soup, but that's not a problem. the girl working was running around, doing the best job at being attentive to each guest and their needs. she definitely deserves a raise for how hard she was working for everyone there. i will be back! read more

I'm not from Tulsa but am an experienced beef pho soup connoisseu. I was working here and wanted to get my Pho fix. The P1 beef soup at this place is spot-on. Great flavor and plenty of tender sliced meat. Sprouts and greens were fresh. The shrim/pork springs rolls were also very good. Service was good and price was average. I was an old regular years ago back when I lived in Tulsa, so it's been some time since I've been here until around the holidays this past December when I was visiting family. We came at a kinda weird time (~4pm, when they open for dinner) and it was not busy at all. I ordered my usual, the #5, but to my dismay they were out of their awesome fresh spring rolls (which was fine, I bet they're popular and it was later in the day) and they no longer do their shrimp chips! Their shrimp chips are easily in my top 3 items to get at Mekong but now I suppose I gotta hop over to Fuji's across the way to get them, and I don't even know if they still have them either! Pros: the flavors here are probably the most authentic in the city. There is stuff on the menu that none of the other places have. My roommate has been looking for this lotus salad for years. My boyfriend and his brother like the vermicelli bowls and rice plates. I usually get the won ton soup. Weirdly extensive desert menu for an Asian place. Would have tried something, but we were stuffed. Cons: the same very sweet lady greets you, seats you, prepares your food, and rings you up. I have lived less than 5 minutes from this place for about the past 5-6 years and have only started going. Don't know why, because this is a fabulous Vietnamese restaurant. Variety of menu items is above and beyond, offering way more than pho and bun salads. While their broth isn't as strong as some other places in town, it's still very good. Their portions are very generous. While other pho establishments give you range of bowl sizes, Mekong gives you one large bowl and it's packed with more noodles than you could ever want. Of course if you need more, you could always order some. All soup bowls are under $8.99. My favorite besides the slice beef pho, is their pork soup that comes with BBQ pork, a generous helping pork dumplings, and lots and lots of chewy almost ramen style of noodles. Very very delicious and very very filing. They offer several types of appetizers from the standard spring roll to crispy shrimp. They even have sampler platter that I'm waiting to try. I was also amazed by their chopped steak meal. It's basically very tender steak cooked to perfection in a mix of butter and soy sauce. It's pretty rich, but you can cut they heaviness by dipping the meat in the little side of pepper and lime they give you. Also comes with a bowl of rice and get this....a cup of soup. So for those that are afraid to venture out from pho, you can have you noodles too. Staff is very friendly and service is relatively fast, though certain menu items that take a bit longer (like the steak). They also give you a basket of shrimp crackers to snack on as you wait for your meal to arrive. read more

The pho is like the other places in Tulsa but not anything like the Pho in California. The broth needs more flavor. But they do try. The beef vermicelli is pretty good. The eggrolls are not good, it is mushy in the center and lacks taste. Service is quick but I don't think that the staff should ask you if you want your change when paying your bill. Asking if you want your change back is rude and leaves the customer feeling obligated to say no. read more

Mekong river is a good little restaurant in South Tulsa. I usually always get the pork combination bowl, and recently substituted the vermicelli noodle for rice, which was a nice switch up. It comes with an egg roll, and you can add more meat by the dollar amount, mine had $2 more which is plenty for a second meal to take home. I also love the chicken wings here, and recommend them as an appetizer. They are served in a glaze which has sautéed onion, peppers, and other spices and are so delicious. i got the mk5 (mi hoahn thanh) that consisted of egg noodles, wontons & bbq pork along with the usual fixings with pho. it was a huge letdown. the main thing that makes or breaks pho is the broth, which in this case didn't do the job. the broth had no flavor whatsoever, super bland. i added components to the pho & it didn't help. the wontons & bbq pork were cool, it didn't connect with the broth. the bowl was packed with a lot of food, more than enough to take home after eating a fair share. this place a lot to choose from, prices are around $10 for a majority for their pho. there was a waiter & waitress who took turns serving the table, service was on point & friendly. read more

So this place is dark, dank, and musty. So I thought I was going to be in for some damn good Vietnamese food. Almost all of the customers were Asian, another great indicator of authentic food. Everything about this place screams damn good food.... except the food. I ordered seafood pho. It was bland. The soup had mussels in it which were tasty, but they weren't prepared properly, because I kept picking little slivers of mussel shells out of my mouth after every bite. I was never a huge fan of Vietnamese food before coming here but this has quickly become one of my absolute favorite restaurants anywhere (not just in Tulsa). I've alternated between three entrees and honestly can't decide which of them I like best. I can, however, tell you what my favorite thing here is and that's the vegetarian egg rolls. There are two in an order and I don't think I've ever been able to eat just one order. I usually eat one order before the meal as an appetizer and then another order at the end instead of dessert. It was quite noticeable that the owners here keep things clean and orderly. I am no Vietnamese food expert. What I try to do is order the same meal at every restaurant, so I can compare what I have eaten and like. For me it is Bun Bo Hue, for my wife it is the vermicelli eggroll salad with chicken. And the appetizer of choice is the spring roll. The spring rolls were large and average in taste. The chicken on the vermicelli was excellent. It had a little char on the chicken meat which really made the meal. The fish sauce dressing was not over powering with fish flavor. The broth of the Bun Bo Hue was a little bland for my liking. It was lacking both in beef flavor and spice (heat and lemon grass flavor). It took a hearty dosing of Sriracha sauce and soy sauce to bring it to life. They don't serve fresh Jalapenos with the side vegetables, but they will provide them on request. The good things about the Bun Bo Hue was that it was not sweet, It was not overpowered by the flavor of fish sauce and there was a generous portion of thin cut lean tender beef. read more

Mekong River is still my favorite Vietnamese joint in the states (and I literally travel across the globe)! I fall in love every time I try a new dish, and I'm the type that doesn't ever order a new entree once I figure out what I like. This place is amazing! The stock on every soup is the best I've had.
