BEST SOUL FOOD in all of New Orleans PERIOD ! Don't argue with me. I stayed in a heavily populated tourist area and I was looking to get away from that. I wanted to taste some southern grown cajun food. I didn't fly 5 hours to eat at popeyes. I was also looking to not spend alot of money. I stayed at the Sheraton on Canal and the restaurants on that side of town were all very fancy and weren't my cup of tea. This place did not pop up on my yelp , I had to get this information from a local. I'm so happy I came here I can't wait to come back. I apologize if this review is all over the place , I just don't know where to start. I'm warning you this restaurant is NOT in the tourist area of NOLA. Moving on ... The food was amazing you get this big platter of food for about 9 bucks , they have so many different things to chose from . The cabbage was definitely my favorite. There were so many items to choose from I wanted everything. The fried chicken is amazing as well. The best thing about this place is the dollar drinks ! Just got back from Mardi gras, The wisest cajun spot to have visited for myself was Melbas. Great service ( after learning the city ) and rich and sought after taste of New Orleans. I had the sweet chili wings, I had great portions of cabbage and of course the cornbread. I'd do it all again and hope you try Melbas. read more

This is a cute little find, so close to my Airbnb. The service was excellent, the people who took my order were very friendly and my order came out in 5 minutes. Another 24 hour joint, gotta love these! A group of four of us strolled in here late, around 3 am or something like that, hammered out of our faces, but never obnoxious wit it, real locals here who know how to handle our liqour. Anyways, remembering what everyone else ordered is a blur, all I remember is my breakfast poboy, and at least one of those giant ass pancakes. I don't think anyone who orders one of those big ass pancakes really realize how massive that thing is. They literally present it in a giant ass pizza box. The one who ordered it was clearly experiencing some drunken confidence in the promise that he would finish the whole thing...long story short, the pancake won. As for my breakfast poboy, it could have been that i was hungrier than a pig who ate nothing but salad for three days straight, but I found it to be the savior of a massive hangover, just hit it up with some Crystal hot sauce, and it's on n poppin! I would give this place zero stars if I could. I don't know how this place is ranked so high. The food is pre-cooked. Why does it take so long? Makes no sense. The wait time with only two people in front of me, is on par with an actual sit down restaurant when it's busy. I even asked if they had any phone orders and they said no. We had the fried catfish (fried to perfection), red beans and rice (perfect), cabbage with sausage on a bed of rice (perfect), shrimp and cheese grits (perfect), jambalaya (rice was a little al dente) and gumbo (was missing a bottom flavor but still great). So Melba is 100% 9th ward good eatin'!!! Its half restaurant half cafeteria style. When you walk in the first thing that will grab your eye is the big menu board. On it are the food available. But look around and the beautiful artwork is the second item that will catch your eye. They have a beautiful array of New Orleans style artwork that grace the walls, and even a trash barrel that is a beautiful piece. For this trip I tried the shrimp and grits along with well buttered toast. The shrimp was grilled and was plentiful...30+ pieces of medium/large shrimp with a very hearty serving of grits. As a NOLA native, I have visited this place multiple times and know for a fact that this IS NOT A BLACK OWNED restaurant. So imagine my surprise when I come on here and see a black woman commenting as the "business owner." This is not okay and is false advertising. You are intentionally misleading people as part of a marketing plan. I initially came to the page to recommend to someone as a late night spot. The food is mediocre at best and certainly not "authentic soul food" but after a late night and drinks it gets the job done. PSA: this place is open 24 hours, 365 days a year. That includes Mardi Gras week including the actual day. The line is long and it doesn't move that quickly but that's ok, just hang in there. Figure out what to eat before you reach the counter. Po boys are good, especially the fried shrimp, which is heartier than popcorn shrimp. The hamburger po boy is a hamburger patty on the bread. Similarly, the sausage is a flat sausage patty. The red beans and rice are amazing. It has andouille. So don't come trying to eat here if you're vegan. Daiquiri reminiscent of college years. Cold. They have daily specials. Three stars because the establishment is friendly and delicious, but slow and mostly, pretty grimy and possibly not the most hygienic. read more

One thing I know for certain I will not support this business again. They don't answer the phone my food was wrong. The drinks here are no joke!!! The unibrow being the strongest daiquiri. Came here on a Friday and was pleasantly surprised that they offer a free extra shot in your drink on Fridays.
