This is hands down my go to place for food and to wash my clothes. My regular usual is a roast beef po- boy or the gumbo. My son loves their gumbo because it is pretty plain. He loves it so much that I get it at least twice a week for him. A small gumbo and he eats just about all of it to himself. His dad loves the cheeseburger on po boy. I also love the daiquiris here too. I get the banana daiquirir a.d yes i do take advantage of the sweet weekebd deals so i make sure fridays to come and have fun! My family eat here soooo much its a shame. Lol. We are here now and I'm mad I didn't write my initial review. Did I mention they are even nice with the little ones? Melba's was recommended by our Uber driver hence to lack of time to make it to another establishment. The food was raved about, but what he forgot to rave about what the lack of quality customer service and the excruciating wait time. There's a lot of options on the menu. The menu board was a little congested so you must take your time to view all options unless you went with something already in mind. There was 6 of us and we all ordered a shrimp Po boy or Po'Girl sandwich except for one person who ordered fried chicken and fries, who received there food before us. We waited almost 40 minutes or longer to receive our sandwiches. When we inquired what was the hold up, we were told there was only one personal making sandwiches. There was already a crowd in the waiting area for pick up but from what I observed there weren't too many sandwiches coming our from the back. All the sandwiches were wrapped in a blue and white sandwich bag. We were extremely upset by the wait time for a sandwich that only contained, Mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles. I was expecting a special Po Boy sauce that was going to make my taste happy. If you're hungry and looking for a quick bite to eat, this is not the place for you. If you have the patience then best of luck to you. I thought the Po'Boy was just "Okay". I can't review the other food options. No Pics because i was too Hangry, it slipped my mind! I love Melba's so much! Nothing makes me happier than a good plate lunch, and Melba's has them...24/7! You literally can't go wrong here--plates, poboys, fried chicken, they're all amazing. I might have a small addiction to the corn grits. And when I say small, I mean large. They're rich and buttery and go well with just about everything. The bourbon chicken is good, as are the ribs and stuffed peppers. I love to order on the kiosk so I can take my time, plus you get a free drink in a reusable parade cup! You can also do laundry and get a daiquiri while here, but I haven't tried either yet. I always say I'm going to get a daiquiri then I'm too full, but I've heard great things! I'm sorry, but I just can't anymore. I usually don't notice the lack of customer service because I usually order online and pick up. Where do I begin? I understand it's Essence weekend, and it's busy, and I'm gonna be waiting. That's not my issue. I decided to order inside because online was charging me a credit card convenience charge of 50 cents. I figured I'd save the quarters and go in. They have 3 kiosks inside where you can save 5% on your order if you basically take your own order. Guess what? They're turned off. Ok. Cool. I hear a lady behind the counter say Next in line. I walk up to one of two ladies working the registers. The one that called for Next in line walks away. She never comes to take my order. So now I'm standing there like an idiot while 3 customers at the other register are taking forever to order. Meanwhile, there's a whole conversation with this guy who's saying that the lady took his order down wrong. He wanted hard fried eggs. Then there's this whole thing about Oh she can't read. Oh you're a liar, blah blah blah, between the employees behind the counter. Finally the customers next to me are done, and their cashier calls for Next in line. I step over and start to order, simple enough. Had to remind her that I wanted a fountain drink, too. And yes, they still charged the 50 cents. I pay. I get my drink. I sit. I wait. Patiently. I swore I heard them call my name, so I walk up to check it out. Not one person acknowledged that I existed. She literally made eye contact with me and looked away. But there's an employee who's clearly off the clock trying to figure out if she wants to order something, managing to almost fall over me because she wasn't paying attention. After standing there like a fool with not a word spoken, I go sit back down, defeated. I eventually see a lady hustling through behind the counter calling someone else's name. I follow her into the other half of the place and eventually get to ask her if they had called me. They hadn't. Cool. Well, the music isn't playing as loud on this side, so I might have a better chance to hear if my name is called. Soon, my food comes out, and I'm on my way, right? Yeah, I guess, after I get handed the stuff and have to bag it myself. Given the total experience up to this point, I'm not sure what I expected. My parents gave up and boycotted after the whole fiasco about the owner's brother or somebody saying they wouldn't play NFL games if the players knelt. All the other employees came out with a statement basically saying Screw that guy, so I kept coming back. The food is just not good enough to bypass the customer service. Seriously, this place is only good if you're out late and hungry for something other than fast food. I'm sorry, Melba's, but I can't support horrible customer service. It's so fixable, and the owner (or manager?) was there! Walking around amidst the chaos. A simple hello, an acknowledgement. Let me know you want my money and loyalty. That's all I'm asking. One manager (looked like upper management) seemed to believe that he was exempt from masks AND social distancing. He nearly bumped into me. All uniformed staff were wearing masks and I find it disappointing that this manager (tall and tan) is being so rude and privileged. Any time of day there will be a line, and there are two sides - one for the traditional food, one for the crawfish, both with the ridiculously awesome daiquiri machines. Again, lines are a great thing because there is just so much variety here it can be a bit overwhelming, especially as you get closer to the hot food trays and see what other stuff they got. Oh, and don't forget the daily specials, which can likewise get dangerous - my AirBnB host pointed out they sometimes get the 52 oz for $5 deal and put it in the freezer to consume during the week. Looking for a mix of a bit of everything, I ended up ordering: -5 piece wing platter: Really good fried chicken, with the side of mac and cheese and corn bread. Now this mac and cheese is one of most interesting I've ever had as the noodles are long and the cheese baked. Showing pictures to friends, they all thought it was french fries until they zoomed in. -6" Shrimp Po' Boy: couldn't leave without getting a po' boy here and it was good too, with tiny fried shrimp dropping out the side. -the daiquiri special. Whatever the sunday special was, cause why wouldn't you get a daiquiri while you're here? Make sure you check out the pictures of the staff on the counter side. Let me preface this by staying I'm not from new Orleans but the service was terrible, there was no patience. No one knew where to put the orders in, on the ordering machines provided or stand in line. The employees were upset that people would put orders in and stand outside to wait or go to the adjoining laundry mat. There is an extra charge for using credit cards so use cash. There was a sign that stated you can use the atm for free if you purchase from this restaurant then when you ask they say that's not valid anymore. I go to Melba's from time to time, it's convenient and not that far from where I live. The food is pretty good, but I have to say that often the service has been rude, loud and even insulting on more than one occasion. It wouldn't hurt for the manager to have a conversation with the counter staff about simple basic manners and how to talk to people nicely. read more

I'm only giving them a 3 because of the prices. $18.99 for a fish plate and $18.99 for a shrimp plate?? Since when did fish and shrimp plates cost the same amount? The shrimp are not deveined. I can't deal with that. The fish plate is delicious and well seasoned as are the fries, but it shouldn't cost that much. I love the corn grits, but they seem to have a different taste every time I get it. Not sure what that is about. The cornbread is so freaking delicious. It was a last minute decision to stop here and eat after leaving The House of Blues. There was a line out the door which almost deterred us from staying. Well....we stayed and then we waited and waited and then waited some more - OVER an hour! While waiting I went to the rest room - it was disgusting and there was no toilet paper. You would think that since this place is busy pretty much most of the time - that it would be maintained regularly, which was definitely not the case. I ordered the shrimp and grits and was pretty much turned off by it when I saw that the shrimp were not deveined! Come on now that's food prep 101 - devein the shrimp! The grits were delicious though. I myself didn't interact with the staff but my family said they were pretty much rude to everyone. Which seems to be the norm after reading some of the other reviews.
