Easily the best restaurant on Staten Island. There are a lot of great ones on the north shore, but Mello Bistro goes beyond perfection. The gist: The food is Italian with French touches, so the menu has a lot of Italian classics, but the fusion creates wonderful dish variations unlike anything you've tried before. And the best part is that the food exceeds any expectations you might have from the descriptions. It's not some cheaply done mish-mash of cultures, but rather a thoughtful and nuanced blend. I'm also impressed particularly that the menu has multiple dish variations for both tuna and salmon, respectively, instead of having the basic and obligatory "the Tuna" or "the Salmon" dishes that a menu often requires. The food: First of all, their house made bread is incredible. Be careful, you might fill up on it, it's practically a delicious appetizer in its own right. We started with the calamari and fried zucchini. I never eat calamari because it is often bland or chewy, or both. It always feels like a vehicle for the and sauce. But this is the first time I couldn't stop myself from eating it. The rings are thin, yet filled with meat and instantly melt in your mouth. It's a texture I've never experienced with calamari before and it is a must try at this restaurant. The fried zucchini is also such an impossibly light and delicate favorite, and the additional truffle flavor adds some wonderful earthiness to it. The portion is also huge and we couldn't stop shoveling these onto your plate. We also had complimentary burrata as it was our first visit and of course it was as perfect as you'd expect. For my main dish I had the duck a l'orange, which was cooked to the perfect temp and oh so crispy on the outside. The plate was beautiful, and the butternut squash and sauce just complemented the duck excellently. I also tried someone's vodka chicken parm, which I know sounds like a generic dish at an Italian restaurant, but this was the thinnest, crispiest, and largest pieces of chicken I've ever had. Trust me you've never had a crunch like this on your chicken parm anywhere on the island before. And the sauce was so good I wish I saved some bread for the meal! The desserts were also lovely and made in-house, with the panna cotta being a remarkable highlight. And don't forget the cocktails; they're all thoughtfully crafted and everyone at the table was blown away by the combinations. We didn't experience a single menu item that was just "fine". Everything excels, and the owners are friendly and passionate about their food. They told us we would love everything, which most people usually say about their food, but they truly mean it here. They were excited to see us enjoy our food so much and you can feel the love in their food. Go here, it's incredible. read more

Went here for Valentine's Day with my wife and 1 1/2 year old. Very old school, mom and pop feel. Subtle decorations, very classy not corny. Service was good no complaints. Had calamari and Ceaser salad for appetizer. Calamari was crispy and well seasoned. It wasn't gummy, immediately the top 5 calamari I've had In NY. Ceaser salad was Ceaser salad, solid execution. I had the steak Frits, medium cook on the steak. Again, excellent execution. My wife's lasagna was to die for. The place is fine for a well behaved child *pats self on back* but the restaurant is very very accommodating for children and nobody seemed annoyed at all. First I like to start off with the customer service, which is superb! My server was Lisa, who was super sweet and accommodating, very personable and professional. I also had the opportunity to meet with the chef personally, and it is clear that he is truly passionate about what he does! Speechless. We were left speechless last Saturday night while we dined to celebrate a late Valentine's evening. We were skeptical coming in because we loved Bin 5 which was the original restaurant however Mello Bistro swept us away. Romantic atmosphere with live music and kind staff. We ordered dirty martini's and I was already won over because it came with stuffed olives which makes the drink in my opinion. Fresh warm bread with olive oil and herbs was brought over immediately while we scanned the menu. It was extremely difficult to make a decision because every option sounded amazing. We finally picked the seared scallops with tomato remoulade as an appetizer which we thought was very different and delicious. For our mains I ordered the red wine braised short rib with creamy mash potatoes and rainbow carrots while my fiancé ordered the duck Al"orange with butternut squash puree. Let me tell you those plates were licked clean. We didn't want the experience to end. Everything was cooked to perfection and was so beautifully executed. Absolutely delicious hands down. We eventually asked for dessert menus but decided that our meals satisfied us exceedingly. While we waited for our check the bartender brought over two shot glasses of limoncello on the house for us to end the night. Went last night for the first time after recommendations from a few people and 5 star review on yelp. Started meal with warm bread and delicious olive oil, we shared fried shoestring zucchini and a burrata special. For entrees we had a seafood risotto special, filet of sole amandine,linguine alle vongole and shared two delicious desserts. I finally had a meal when finished I could say wow that was a great meal. To toast I had the potion drink which had a little too much rosemary for my taste so for my next drink I switched to a Green Gin & Tonic. My other half had Sauvignon Blanc. Came in on a Friday expecting to possibly be turned away because we didn't have a reservation. The restaurant was almost full. We both ordered water and then waited a really really long time for someone to take our order. It wasn't clear who was a waiter and who wasn't. The hostess actually took our order since she saw us looking around. Then waited another long period where the hostess told us twice that our food was coming. In between the wait we did get bread and oil with herbs which was good. I ordered the chicken pillard and my boyfriend order the lasagna Bolognese with a side of truffle Parm fries. My food came out exactly as the menu described. I like my chicken very thin and they did exactly that. Everything on the plate was good. The lasagna Bolognese comes in vodka sauce which is doesn't say on the menu but wasn't an issue for us because it tasted good. The receipt said it was gluten free but the menu hadn't said it. My bf didn't taste a difference. We ordered the chocolate tissimo for dessert. The cake tasted burnt and had a rubber texture. Not pleasant at all. Not wanting to have to wait a long time again I called over the bus boy for the check. When we were about to depart the chef came out and introduced himself.
