I came into the Mellow Mushroom with high hopes, since I've grown accustomed to some great craft pizza joints here in the northern Indy suburbs of Carmel and Westfield. Despite all the funky decor and theming, I was a little disappointed at the quality of the pizza. Certainly not bad, but nothing stood out. Unfortunately, I just don't think it can compete with the likes of Crust, Pizzology and the other top-tier boutique pizza restaurants. Maybe they're not trying to be top-tier, which I can understand. Service was poor, however. We were in a party of 6, and everyone's drinks ran dry multiple times. Our server disappeared for 10-15 minutes at a time, which is never good. I'll probably give them another try, but so far there isn't much positive to say. read more

My family loves this location, and we are there a couple of times a month. In fact, we wish there was a location in Fishers. The location underwent a freshening of the furniture, but it didn't change the 70's vibe. Last night was a disappointment. We knew what we wanted, and ordered our meal and pretzel bites when the waitress came for our beverage order. The drinks (water & diet Coke) were off-taste due to typical washing with a low-temp bleach rinse dishwasher. One of our consistent aggravations is that the pretzel bites or pretzels are not so much appetizers as they are an accompaniment to the meal. Meaning - appetizers should be served BEFORE the main dish - WELL BEFORE. Twenty+ minutes after we ordered the pretzel bites arrived just as my wife and I decided to go. I asked about the pizza, and the waitress said it would be "right up". I told her to please box it up so we could leave. She went to the kitchen, put the pizza in a box and brought it out; Bad timing. Pretzel bites and pretzels can be help at temperature without degradation so that they can be served before the pizza. So, we drove to the movie eating out pizza and bites in the car. We will go back, but it is time someone managed this kitchen so that items arrive in the order they are supposed to. read more

I am so disappointed! We came to this location a few years ago and it was great! Today was like an entirely different universe. The food was okay but the service was absolutely the worst I have had anywhere! Our waitress may have spoken a total of 10 words to us then entire time. We had to get up and find her to get drink refills, when she finally brought them she just plunked them down on the table and walked away. Mellow mushroom, nothing mellow about it. Their specialty pizzas, daily specials and big flavors, keep me coming back. I honestly love their dough almost more than anything. There are only a few spots that I can think of where the dough is what is so memorable. Even more so than the pizza or toppings as a whole. Love the pizzas and the service here! It gets loud inside, but it has a fun vibe and some cool decor. They have a patio and you can sit outside. They also let us bring our small dog, but we had to stay at a few certain tables. We always ask first. We were going to get a pizza to go, but no one was really sitting outside since it had been a rainy day so it was nice for us to be able to sit there and get our dog used to being out. The pizza are great and they let you have you make your pizza half and half which is always nice so we can both get what we want. That holy shiitake pizza...my mouth is watering just typing it's name. I am not a pizza person by any means but this place has me hooked. I'm the oddball who doesn't like red sauce or pepperonis on pizza so the exquisite menu here is perfect for me. My family likes getting their normal options (typically a cheese pizza, yawn) but they say it's the best they've had. Staff is kind here, the place is clean, and although the pizzas are made to order (and you can do half and half, score!), the food comes quickly. The first Mellow Mushroom my family stumbled upon was in Asheville, NC.... and well instantly fell in love. It was a few years later when I realized it was a franchise, and I was ecstatic to know there was one in Carmel. This location is very clean and friendly. Love trying the different unusual pizzas and the crust is as good as it gets! My personal favorite is the Barbecue chicken, delightful! The only downside is sometimes found in the ambience. My family used to LOVE this location. However recently, our orders have been incorrect the last 3 times. It's frustrating because it continuously happens and then we have to wait another 20 minutes for it to be remedied. That being said, I'm not surprised as every teenager working has AirPods in. My family and I have been here at least 5 times if not more and we love it! The pretzels are very freakin good, we get the Garlic Butter & Parmesan pretzels before our pizza. The staff is always nice here and I love that they play my favorite genre of music, Reggae! The pizza is very tasty, I believe that they put Garlic Butter & Parmesan on the pizza crust, might be wrong but whatever it is, it's tasty! I only have one downfall about this place, is that it's a bit pricey. Maybe that's why it's in Carmel, IN. and not somewhere else?! VerdicTL;DR: Kid-friendly pizza that is also adult- approved. Who says that there's nothing good about the South? Mellow Mushroom is a fast-growing franchise out of Atlanta GA. It occupies a middle ground between pure pizza chains (e.g. Domino's, Little Caesars) and gourmet pizza pubs (e.g. BoomBozz, Pies & Pints). Sure it's got a bar, but the selection is limited and certainly not the focus of the place. Sure it's got some wacky pizzas, but those aren't the focus either. The pizza is some of the most competent chain-style pizza you'll ever find. The crust is probably the most distinctive element -- whole wheat flavors predominate, with delicate molasses, dark sugar, and bready notes. It's crisp ('baked on the stone', as they proudly advertise) yet gives way to a pillowy, delightful interior. You could put anything on that crust and it would taste good. We usually order the basic cheese pizza; when put to a vote, this is the pizza that my family prefers almost to the exclusion of all others. The sauce is tangy, bright, and full of fresh tomato flavors. The cheese is non-overwhelming in quantity and quite decent in quality. We've tried out many of the speciality pies, and the real standout there is the Holy Shiitake: a white pizza packed with a mushroomy umami punch. The thing is, though -- like Pies & Pints, the crust really is so good that you don't want to obscure it too much with other flavors. I'm told there are some secret menu items that they'll make for you if they have the ingredients on hand. I don't know about any others, but the caprese salad is one such secret menu item that is well worth having. The decor is intentionally hippie -- I find it disingenuous but my kids love it (so I'm not going to fault it; after all, the name of the place itself is a reference to that unfortunately drug-addled era so they're just playing the decor true to form). Service has always been great. Oh yeah -- for weekday lunches (11-1, M-F) they'll do individual slices. During weekends it's whole pies only. Highly recommended, for the whole family! read more

Somehow I can't shake the image that this is a place where stoner's with munchies take their kids for dinner... It just has the feel of a very mellow magic mushroom kinda thing... Love the murals on the walls. One includes local celebs such as Letterman, the other some hardcore rockers like Ozzy, Led Zeppelin and so on... how many can you find. Being that it was my first time there, I was a bit confused upon entering the building. There was a long counter where apparently the entire staff stood lined up. So I thought it was counter service. Alas I was wrong and was guided to a table. Service was ok. The 'mellow' really comes through there. Please don't be in a hurry when you come here... it's quite relaxed and time no longer matters... I thought I was going to starve, first waiting on the appetizer, then waiting on the pizza... Anyways, that being said... the food is phenomenal. The bruschetta to die for, light crisp flavorful... I would go as far as saying the best I ever had. Pizzas are great, very tasty and occasionally strange combinations, but all yummy. I can't give my opinion on any of the other food items since I didn't consume any. But I had a red potato pizza, just had to try it and was quite pleasantly surprised. Yummy is all I can say. I also had a bite of various others, something like Cosmic Karma, Shitake Mushrooms, House Special and Maui Wowie? A huge disappointment and not at all representative of the typical MM. Service: Incredibly slow for a 1/2 half-full restaurant on a Thursday night. We skipped the appetizers and it still took over an hr for our meal. Heck, it took 10 minutes just to get a server. Drinks: They had none of the wines listed on the menu. The manager gave us the old "These menus are from corporate and the franchises can carry what they like." Here's a tip: your menu should ONLY carry items you actually serve. Anyway...we ended up getting some alcoholic ginger beer. It was so-so and light on the ginger. Food: Their version of the Kosmic Karma was a 3 at best, lacking the distinctive flavor it's known for. It also seemed a bit undercooked in the center. Somehow this place didn't have the Philosophers Pie on their menu, but I recreated it thanks to Google. That was a strong 4 to 4.5. Yum! My friend and I were fairly hangry and MM was the closest place and neither of us had ever been. Very chill pizza place - was nice that there's an adult area [bar] and a family area. There were a fair # of kids there but we didn't hear it thanks to the separation. It was fairly dead and a non-busy time for food, so we go our food fairly quickly. Pretzel sticks + beer cheese AND marinara = uhhh-mazing. The beer cheese alone was tasty! Both of us got calzones which appeared very huge- we thought we'd be able to conquer them entirely, but that wasn't the case. Don't let your eyes fool you. My leftovers made for a great lunch. Overall - great place, now I know what the Lafayette people clamour for. I've had tons of friends love this pizza place, so we finally got around to trying it on Saturday night. We started with the half order of Parmesan pretzels and splurged on the beer cheese (up charge). The pretzels themselves weren't anything spectacular, but I could've lived off the beer cheese for days-FOR DAYS! It made an impression on me to say the least. My boyfriend and I split a medium-half Red Skin Potato Pie for me and House Special on his half. Both of us could only eat one slice before giving up and asking for to go boxes (ate it all the next day). There really is a lot of food! The main thing wrong with this small chain, for me, is the over-the-top hippie decor. There's a tie-dyed VW bus in the dining room, a ceiling-high mushroom just inside the door, and goofy cartoony pizza-re-themed paintings. I think kids enjoy it though, and it emphasizes the casual vibe in there. They have a really nice selection of draft beer (8?), most of it from craft breweries. In Indy the local feature is Upland but different areas will have different selections. When we were there they had Guinness, Sam Adams, Upland Wheat, 2 different Bell's, Magic Hat #9, maybe Blue Moon, and at least one other. Our server was nice, friendly, and quick. We had the meatball app to start. A slice of fresh mozzarella was the "cream filling" between each half of 3 good-sized meatballs, which were served lollipop style on a bed of tasty marinara, topped with fresh Parmesan curls and shreds of fresh basil. Yum! I would've preferred the meatballs slightly hotter-I think the cheese cooled them down some. We decided to go with the 10" Hot Potato Pie for $10.99. My partner usually doesn't want to try "weirdly sauced" pizza-any sauce that isn't tomato doesn't belong in his opinion, so it took some convincing. The pizza was fantastic! Mellow Mushroom uses a slightly sweet whole wheat dough-it walks the line between soft and chewy very well. Hot Potato Pie is garlic & olive oil, sliced potatoes, bacon, 2 kinds of cheese, onions, a little zesty ranch, a bit of sour cream on each slice, and a sprinkle of chives. You can watch the cooks hand-stretch the dough and actually see into most of the kitchen. The pizza was delicious and the toppings were applied with care evenly over the pie and none of his onions strayed over onto my half. I recommend this place, either for families or adults dining without kids. If you don't want to sit around the noise of children, there is a well-separated bar area. read more

Just FYI - this place is PACKED on a Saturday night. And not with adults - there was a child's birthday party going on. Talk about LOUDDDD. As soon as the children left around 8:30pm, the noise level dropped to normal levels. Before that, we were yelling to hear the person across from us, let alone anyone else at our table. Wow, no the 7 piece appetizer was 7 full size pretzels! There is a great variety of toppings to choose from and they also offer dairy free cheese which is a great option for lactose intolerant kids. Usually love mellow mushroom and we are frequent customers. Very unhappy with the service we received. We were charged for mustard which is ridiculous and were overcharged on pretzels when we ordered different flavors. The menu clearly said one price for six pretzels. To top it off we had a coupon for a free small pizza, and after being told we could apply it to a large, we're told we couldn't when we got the bill. I had my son's fourth birthday party here this weekend and it was fantastic! The owner was responsive to my emails and set us up (8 adults and 3 kids) in a nice booth/table space in the back. The staff offered to take my cake to the fridge until we needed it, which I thought was great customer service. We used the free pretzel bites yelp offer and got some pizzas (kids loved the cheese and adults got veggie, pepperoni and BBQ) and salads. Beer selection was fantastic, as was our server, Shannon.
