One of LA's best kept speakeasy bars. The cocktails are hand crafted and made to impress. They have a such a wide variety to choose from. If you're a vodka drinker, I'd highly recommend the "Great Pear." They also have really good food options too. Service is also great, but depending on the night it can get really hectic (considering it's small). Ambiance is very sleek and mesmerizing. This makes for a great regular. read more

We really love the whole experience. Definitely a must if you're in the Melrose area the atmosphere was very high end and such a funny contrast from a hookah lounge entry. To be clear, you have to go into the hookah lounge and walk all the way to the back of it to gain entry through a book case. I had the ceviche and a quesadilla. They were both delightful. Super cheesy quesadilla. My friend had the garden burger. It came with two patties. It was kind of excessive but if you're hungry, it'll definitely fill you up. I ordered the Pistolero with Blanco tequila and A Great Pear and both were fantastic. Pistolero is pretty much a spicy margarita and A Great Pear had pear flavored vodka with passion fruit which was so refreshing. I love craft cocktails and our bartender, Harvey, did a bang up job. For some reason they weren't actually open tonight--an employee told us they were opening 20 minutes late, but then 45 minutes later we were still waiting with no updates so we just quietly left. I totally get it, things happen, but they could have done us the common courtesy of communicating whatever the situation was. Such a cute speakeasy - we lucked out with our random Yelp pick. When you enter, you're gonna walk straight down and pass two doors. There's a couple doors to trick you in the small back room, so it makes for a fun surprise, esp for a date. Ricky was such a sweet bartender. Asked him to watch our drinks when we stepped out for a break - the first time, i think the busser accidentally cleared our section, so Ricky made us new drinks. One of the drinks was incorrect but we appreciated the gesture nonetheless - it was a huge pleasant surprise to see these two drinks taken off our tab. I guess that was good karma on my bf's end for not complaining - I was gonna kindly mention the mistake . The second time we stepped out, Ricky watched our drinks and placed napkins over our drinks to ensure they remained safe. That was such a thoughtful gesture. It is a tiny "speakeasy" in the back. Cute hidden idea. Pretty decorations and would be fun with a group. Went with a friend before going to groundlings. It was early. The bartender was meh. We were a little bit of an annoyance, as it sure we are. They have no non alcoholic beers. He said no one wants those mostly they all want to drink a lot. Asked what they had and he said not really anything. Ended up asking for a virgin mojito. It was good. They food was bad. I got the shrimp appetizer which was fresh shrimp but doused in a spicy sweet sauce. Quality of the shrimp was good but tiny tiny amount and lots of sauce. We got the nachos and they were tasty but definitely using that out of the can 7-11 cheese. I measured this with the following on a fairly slow night. - We were seated for 20mins until the bartender noticed we made eye contact with him and took our order. - Server Neglected to bring cutlery and new plates as requested. - Server wouldn't check on us for long periods of time. - We clearer the table ourselves at one point and transferred plates onto the empty table next to us as a hint. The server passed by a few times while looking at the vacant table next to us and proceeded to clear it after the third time. - Our bill was incorrect twice. On the second time we weren't given an itemized receipt and noticed the charge was three times higher than it should've been. After our inquiries we found that they added multiple items to our tab that weren't ordered by us. Food: Mediocre - Tomato basil mozzarella flatbread were just as it was spelled. - Artichoke dip was bland but worked well with my drink. Tips: I would maybe come back just for a drink. But would pay in cash and look throughly at the receipt. Parking: Street parking How to find: Walk through the hookah lounge to the back room. This was actually very cool. How to improve: I think this place has a lot of potential as the location is great and style of the place is very nice. However, one eventually showed up just as we were leaving. He escorted us into the lounge and then opened a bookcase, which is the hidden entrance to the restaurant. I was expecting a little more WOW, but this place is a pretty cool find. I really enjoy speakeasies so this was right up my alley. When you arrive, you go inside this hookah lounge and then walk straight to the back. The host then pushes open this secret door and you then find yourself in a small room with a couple doors. Which door will lead the way?? once you figure it out TAH DAH, you are in. The place is quite small with seating at the bar, couple small tables in the behind, and then a large table in the back for groups. Our bartender Alex was great and knowledgeable. The drinks he made tasted amazing and he took his time with every drink. Super presentable. The cocktails were pretty pricey like $13-$16, so I would not come here all the time but would probably hit up this place again when friends or family members visit from out of town. This was my first speakeasy and I think I'm hooked! My date a few months back once mentioned speakeasies in other cities which got me thinking, "what about LA?" So with a little Yelp help and the Opentable app (which is fabulous by the way), I made the reservation since it was a belated birthday treat. Obviously like many businesses on Melrose, parking is on the street so we hit the residential area and took a walk (we got there early). I found the Hookah Lounge and told the bouncer at the front I had a reservation for Melrose Station and he promptly took us to a hostess at the back of the room where I repeated the reservation name. The bouncer in turn, opened the bookshelf in back of her and let us through - alone! The two of us had to figure out which of the three or so doors to enter! The lights were dim. Once we got the right one, we stepped down into this cozy bar/lounge and our waitress was waiting for us. She took us to a table (they're very small and a tight squeeze) and brought us waters (by request). After some deliberation since we share our food anyway, decided on the Tuna Ceviche, Egg rolls and cheesy flatbread. To drink, he had the Chili Chili Bang Bang (spicy tequila) for $14 and I had the Just Berry Me Already (Gin and Berry assortment) for $16. First of all, I loved my drink! The gin was light and tasted the berries. The waitress also mentioned the foam was lactose free which was cool. I had no desire to try anything spicy but he loved the tequila drink. He additionally got the Malakas for $16 which had a fun, layered taste where the basil was prominent. I didn't have much, but enough to know I would recommend. The Tuna Ceviche was definitely my favorite and can I have it everyday please!? Served with black, coal tortilla chips with a light sprinkle of chili, we scooped the ceviche up appetizer style. It also has avocado and if you know me, any excuse for avocado! His favorite was the flatbread. Since he ordered it last, I was a bit fullish and it was good, but my tastebuds weren't registering for carbs. The egg rolls we agreed, were super disappointing and were pretty sure they came from the frozen section from the local grocery store. They were served with sweet n' sour sauce & teriyaki in two separate sauce dishes which were "just ok." He also kept mentioning that he appreciated the open (reserved) table between us because there was a couple on the other side of it. If there were three couples in that small area, it would have been really cramped. So a shout out to that coordination on a Friday night. Another comment from what I observed, was that the waitress albeit good, became harder to flag down as the night went on. She seemed to be socializing with her friends? Patrons? When he tried to get her attention, he felt blown off since she was still laughing with the people at the bar. Mark off for that. The host will guide you inside the scented smoke lounge straight to a bookshelf! Surprise! That's the cute secret passage that leads to this wonderful bar. As you make your way inside, you'll be astounded by the aesthetics. The bright marble tables, sleek design of the bar, romantic candlelit setting surrounding the table area and wood trims above the ceiling are all so lovely! Make sure to bookmark this place and take your special someone here for an intimate cozy evening. I was absolutely in love with this chic speakeasy and omg, the bar stools were so comfy to sit on too which I find super rare! Unfortunately, this place isn't cheap. You're looking at a specialized cocktail ranging at a minimum of $15+. BUT, the friendly bartenders and skill put into every drink is worth the special occasion. If you're hungry, they also serve bite-sized items to nibble on. I didn't get to try any food items as I arrived here after a nice dinner meal near the area so I'll refrain from any food comments. Came here with one of my girlfriends for food and drinks. There is no sign and it's within a hookah lounge. Thankfully there was a host who clearly noticed we were lost, and asked where we were headed. We told him the Melrose Station and he escorted us to the back towards another door. He let us in and shut the door behind us. Leaving us super confused and in a dark little box of a room. It was super embarrassing because we couldn't find the door and I was pushing the walls shaped like other doors thinking it'll magically open. My friend low key panicked and jiggled various door nobs/handles. I finally turned on the flashlight and found an actual door and we got into the the actual bar like fools. The ambience there is nothing like the hookah lounge you have to go through to get to it. It's classy and fairly calm, and very small! Absolutely not the place if you are looking to dance. But such a good fun spot to catch up with a friend over a drink. My boyfriend and I preferred sitting at the bar due to how close the tables were to one another. I got the Melrose Station and he got some smokey whiskey drink (i forget the name.) I really loved mine as the heat was subtle but definitely there. The drink overall had a good tastes. Neither my boyfriend nor myself liked his drink. It was way too smokey, felt like I was at a fire site. The drinks themselves are fairly pricey, I think about $15 each, but typical for LA. Definitely a good spot to go before a movie or as a stop on date night. We didn't get any food. Lastly, they also have a little photo booth which is fun. The bar itself is small, intimate, and in the back of a hookah lounge. The entrance is cute, and you definitely feel like you're entering a real speakeasy. Decor is very modern and fresh, although I thought the music (Europop for a while) was louder than it needed to be given how small the space was. Food was fine though nothing to write home about (we tried the empanadas and a flatbread). We went early on a weeknight and had no problem getting in; the bartender said weekends tend to be more crowded but that it can vary wildly. All in all, Melrose Station is definitely worth checking out, but be prepared to drop some serious $$$. read more

So disappointed. The food was mediocre at best. Tuna ceviche tasted like guacamole. I had to really look for the tuna but kept getting chunks of avocado. The flat bread tasted like saltine crackers topped with microwaved cheese. Not edible after one bite. The sliders were just ok. Nothing memorable. In fact I can't even recall what it tasted like except it made a big mess with a puddle of cheese on my plate, effectively ruining it for future use for the ceviche. Lastly, the empanadas were more dough than meat. The chimichurri was not bad, but did we really need a cup of it for 5 small doll house sized empanadas? Food aside, which let's be honest, no one really expects to be the strong suit out of a speakeasy, the rest of the experience was mixed. It was interesting that the speakeasy was hidden inside a hookah lounge, and the fake book case entrance was an excellent touch. Inside though was so dim I also ran into another man coming out from the bar. I could see the handle to open the real door out the six other fake ones. It was worse than the hardest escape room trap trying to figure out how to open the "last door on the left." Probably the most disappointing thing of all was the drinks. It took forever to get our two drinks made. And there was only one other table of two present. I got "a foggy place" which came in a fascinating glass globe full of smoke. It looked better than it tasted. Much too sweet when I just wanted smoke and whiskey. My husband had a "Chili chili bang bang" which our waiter warned was spicy. It was anything but. He had to stab the chili to death to release a bit of spice to cover the syrupy sweetness. The side car was his second drink. He makes this at home all the time and figured that a classic drink like this could not go wrong. Well, he finished the drink and said it was the worse side car he ever had. Way too sour. BUT I've never experienced unprofessionalism the way I did when I got a call from their manager Mila. she was extremely nasty, after I was inquiring about reservations, once I told her that her attitude was inappropriate "SHE HUNG UP THE PHONE" ! Thats not how you conduct business, it was also shocking that I emailed them and didn't even get a response until 5 days later, so to get a call that was so extremely unprofessional was disheartening.
