This place is very cute - love the concept. Food is pretty great, too: fresh, very customizable and just overall yummy. They do seem to have some organizational issues though (a.m. & p.m. / weekday & weeekend shifts don't seem to communicate very well when supplies run low or out altogether), so many menu options are often, well, not an option. Hopefully some more consistent customer traffic will help them get their ordering rhythm down. Also, maybe I've spent too much time in the northeast and have to re-acclimate to the Florida pace and work ethic, but opening time seems to be more of a guideline, so if you're in a hurry, keep that in mind. In the last twenty years this location (which has a Town of Indialantic zip code but is in the City of Melbourne) has been many different eateries. In this incarnation, Danielle was the sole server, and she was in the weeds managing just six tables. Before you jump on me for being harsh on waitstaff, let me remind you that 25 years ago I would cover fourteen four-tops by myself with great joy. I would even ask to be put on shifts by myself. Coincidentally, the restaurant where I waited tables used to be in this same strip plaza. From the promising sounding section of the menu entitled, "Signature Bowls," I went with the Meat Lovers, offered as a choice of base; eggs; bacon; ham; sausage; choice of pepper jack, provolone, or cheddar cheese; and smothered in homemade sausage gravy. Although it wasn't a terrible start, the eggs were destroyed and then buried to cover up the incompetence. The gravy was clearly from a packet and not homemade. Nothing special to see here. I also was looking forward to the Ahi Tuna selection under "Stuffed Avocados," featuring jasmine rice, topped with seaweed salad and a whole grilled Avocado, stuffed with fresh ahi tuna, sprinkled with sesame seeds and green onion, and drizzled with poke sauce and sriracha aioli. Sounds scrumptious but, Ack! The avocado was black, the seaweed salad had turned, and the tuna was mushy. Not good at all. The chef should have 86'd the dish instead of serving it. To have perused the tantalizing pictures on their website where they tout their food as "unique and delicious," and then to have sat down in this colorful and well-decorated coffee shop, was to anticipate a heavenly meal. I know I am constantly criticized for "beating up on locals." Trust me, I get no joy from that. But, hey, if the food sucks, it sucks. Sorry. Gotta call a spade a spade. I would like to tell you that my brunch at Mel's Tiki Café was a delightful banquet, but it was only a Barmecide feast. The Big Boy says, "Skip the Tiki Room and cross the bridge for a much better breakfast." read more

A friend discovered this place and wanted to try it. Seating was immediate at lunchtime. I chose the Nalu Salmon bowl ($16) and she chose the Ahi Tiki Bowl ($15). Pictures of the current menu are posted so you can check out the ingredients. We both thought our dishes had healthy ingredients and were tasty. The reason for the 4 star rating is that I have had Poke with MORE of the PROTEIN ingredient before for the same money. It was a little bit SPARSE with respect to the other ingredients. Came across Mel's Tiki Cafe while searching Yelp for a breakfast place. The overall 5 star rating really caught my eye and we decided to give Mel's a try. When we walked into the small cafe in the shopping center I was thinking I was a tiki hut more so than a cafe with the bling on the walls complementing the name tiki. There was one cook and one server working; both of which greeted us as we walked in. The server was very nice and answered all of our food questions. I had the biscuit sliders which was 2 biscuits stuffed with egg, bacon, and cheese served with a small cup of sausage gravy for dipping. The taste was great and the serving size just right for a hearty breakfast before beginning the day. They also had gourmet coffee drinks; but I had the regular drip coffee and it was just right. This is my first time writing a review so bear with me. I have been going to Mel's on and off for a couple of years now. Let's start with the food. The menu is a perfect blend of healthy and delicious which is why I kept coming back every time I was in town. Eventually, I started ordering to go because honestly I was not impressed with Brigit. She started out nice enough but it was quickly visible that she only cared about the regulars. I gave it a couple of chances but Sunday after Sunday I got the same lukewarm service compared to the customers that came in all the time. My last time eating in with her she put the check on the table before we even got our food because they were "closing soon". It was 2:30 and they close at 3. So after that I would just come in and grab my food to go. However, a couple of moths ago I got to town and really wanted a hula moa bowl. Trust me , it's delicious; and a new voice answered. She was downright delightful and I made sure to tell her when I came in. Tiki chatted with me a bit and convinced me to try coming in again. I did and was served by her and I have to tell you her demeanor and attention was amazing. I thought for sure she might even be part owner just because of the care and attention she gave. It was genuine, and she gave every table the same attention. After being served by Tiki I was totally converted and am now a hard core Mel's fan. The vibe is very laid back. There is a really cool big mural on the wall. This little place is actually pretty cool, and has a bunch of gluten free options as well. Make sure you ask for Tiki.
