Wanted to try something new and delicious tonight and after some research decided to find some pupusas after enjoying some at the Grand Central Market a couple of months ago. Did some research here at Yelp and found Mely's Pupuseria on Lake just across from the CVS. Phoned in our order and 15 minutes later had our hot little pupusas in hand. They smelled so good we sat in the car in the parking lot and tried one. OMG...tried the shrimp pupusa and it was INCREDIBLE!! So much better than the previous ones we had tried. Price per pupusa is about $2...WHAT?! The cabbage slaw that came was full of flavor and fresh herbs. The salsas that came with the order were fresh, delicious and not too hot. i enjoy trying new eateries especially in my town of pasadena. i took my dad and brother here thinking something different from our usual weekend lunch get togethers. since i've traveled to el salvador, the country famous for pupusas, i knew what they were and how they should taste. i was (pleasantly) surprised at how good the pupusas were. we also ordered the sweet tamale and was just as tasty. being our first time, we expected someone to take our order at our table as we sat down. we waited and waited to no avail. a fellow diner told us to go to the cashier and order. we did and problem solved. our server noticed we were a bit bugged by it all - they were a lil bit busy. when our food arrived, she gave us complimentary side dishes knowing it was our first visit and wanted us to return. it worked. read more

I've been here twice already and will likely continue to go back. I can't really comment on the pupusas because I don't really like them in general so I've had their sopas and they were SO good! The only other time I've enjoyed sopas so much was at the farmer's market in SF where the food is extremely fresh! I had the chicken sopas and it was topped with fresh avocado and a delicious crema sauce. Portions are generous, their rice and beans were very good. They have many different types of Pupusas, my favorite being the "revuelta" which is made with chicharron (pork), beans, and cheese inside. I have been coming to this pupuseria for years now, and I really like the pupusas, but this is the second time I get bad salsa. I don't know if they keep the salsa outside or if it's because of the 100 degree weather we have been having lately, but i have received spoiled salsa lately. Luckily I always have homemade salsa in my house so I used that instead. The pupusas, on the other hand, are delicious! By far the best customer service in North Pasadena. My husband, daughter, and I came here looking for something new and different to try. We had driven past this little restaurant many times. This cozy little joint has the best most personable employees. There are only a few tables but the friendly atmosphere makes for an inviting and welcoming energy. We ordered four different papusas. They were all so delicious. I recommend the steak and cheese and zucchini and cheese. The employees even let us sample their homemade egg soup (not on the menu but should be). This spot is my roommates and I's favorite spot. Everyone inside is very kind and we never have to wait very long for our pupusas. They are probably the best pupusas I've had and they cost about $2.50 - $3 a pupusa but 2 of them will leave you feeling full for sure. There isn't much that made this place really stand out for me, but the food is decent, the prices were good, and the service was good enough. I had the carne asada taco plate, and the tacos themselves were very flavorful. I was a little disappointed that the homemade salsa didn't really have much flavor to it; it was just spicy and nothing else to it. I also ordered a jalapeno and cheese pupusa which tasted just fine, but when I got mine it felt like it was the first thing they cooked and let it sit for a bit while they finished the rest of my meal. It was a little cold and the cheese was already starting to harden by the time I got it. I'm sure it would have been better had I gotten it fresh.
