I had received a quote from a local business specializing in fabricating curtains and draperies. I was all set to hire them when they told me it would take 6-8 weeks for them. That would put it in to the holiday period which was unacceptable to me. I looked on Yelp and found excellent reviews for Soraya and Memo Fabric downtown LA. My girlfriend and I were shooting a magazine cover last week and needed to find drape/fabric options last minute (on a Saturday for a Monday shoot). We tried Joanne's but they didn't have the amount of fabric we needed for the backdrop (5 drapes 9' L x 4' W). We went to the garment district and searched the best drape store in DTLA, Memo Fabric was #1, so we dropped by. From the moment I walked in the door, the staff treated me like a first class customer. They cut pieces of every color and style I wanted to see, they gave me a cold bottle of water, and even waited for our producers to give us the final OK. When I had picked all the colors and fabrics I needed (1 purple, 1 green, 1 gold), they gladly cut the pieces for me and even offered me a special price. Soraya altered a large pair of full length curtains for us and made two cushions from the extra fabric. She also arranged for all new hardware. The alterations, which included a major rework of the pleats, were expertly done and the curtains look much better than before. The length is perfect and the hardware works better than before. This business is OUTSTANDING. We had a very small job, but important for us, to drape our newly re-done almost 100 year old house/master bedroom. I had estimates ranging from several hundred dollars to $3K!! I was in touch with Soraya, who recommended I make a visit to their shop to discuss my vision and look at the fabrics they had. I almost didn't go because I didn't want to go to L.A.. SO GLAD I DID! Soraya was wonderful! I had brought photos of my project and discussed with her what I wanted in terms of look, fabric, etc. She quoted me a price and then let me know she'd come out to do the measuring if we selected them. We did end up selecting them and when she came out to do the measure, she made a couple of recommendations which I followed. The result is a beautiful, lush drapery for our bedroom. I always give honest reviews and I had to think long and hard about this one. Although I feel that the service, workmanship, quality, price, and overall experience was as close to 5 stars as possible, there were a few problems that brought it down to 4 and let me explain... I needed a cheap curtain done asap, but the problem was that it had to be entirely 100% custom made and so many details involved to make sure that it fit just right, many other manufacturers simply were not able to do that. I even went to a certain major do-it-yourself home improvement chain and they quoted me a ridiculously high price that I could have bought a car with. I went on yelp and kind of picked Memo at random, I called and it took a while to schedule, but the manager was super-nice and accomodating. I finally got around to come to their warehouse in DTLA a week later, it was a huge place with gorgeous custom Persian rugs, murals, and artwork, they clearly were experts at their craft. It took only a few minutes to go over the details, but the selection of fabric was kind of limited and it took a while to pick the right combination (this was due to the fact that we were on a budget and could not order custom ones which would have been more expensive). They were able to fit the curtain, with custom rods and mounts within my budget, very well within budget, in fact it was around 1/50th of what other shops quoted me, I was really pleased. But the only problem came around when the curtains needed to be installed, for whatever reason, their usual installer flaked out and things took a few weeks longer for them to find a replacement. This was the only major problem, but it was an issue since the installation is considered part of the package. They were able to find someone else to install it and things finally got done. But don't get me wrong, these people are very nice and honest, they really know what they are doing, they got a difficult project and made a product that fit close to as best as what we could have hoped for. I certainly would recommend Memo to everyone for their curtain or textile needs, they are super-low cost and 100% custom designed (not partial-pre-made-custom like other major home improvement chains). I'm very certain that the delay in installation was a one-time thing, but it did cost us some time and money (but no extra charges from Memo of course). read more
