Menehune offers a perfect cup of coffee on your way to explore the island, set off on ocean adventure, or to just grab and take back to your slumbering significant other. They use only local beans that they roast in-house to serve a perfectly smooth, non-acidic beverage. I really didn't realize how different the quality of coffee was until we visited the island the had their coffee. I can't recommend Menehune and their coffee enough, we even bought a number of whole bean packages to take home with us. Poor customer service today. Rude response to a complaint about not receiving a mocha cheesecake I really was looking forward to trying. Lady (did not get her name) said she would deliver to table as I sat down to order and never brought it to the table. She mentioned I forgot to add a tip and I said that was intentionally done. She started to argue with me that they were short handed raising her voice. I raised my voice back, eventually yelling at her. She stared at me. Totally bad taste left in my mouth. I was staying .5 miles away with a friend. I said I took pictures and would leave a review on Yelp and quietly walked out. It did have facilities that were handicap accessible. read more

We weren't blown away by this place, but it was decent greasy spoon breakfast. My dad got the gravy and biscuits. He said it was good and the gravy had good flavor. I had the game and cheese croissant. It was on the smaller side and very simple- nothing special. My step mom got a breakfast plate and her bacon was under cooked and cold and her cheese tasted bland. Come early because it can fill up due to there not being many places around. Their orange juice tasted funny, and the coffee was nothing to brag about. The server was kind, she seemed to not know a whole lot about the menu, but she seemed young and learning still. Menehune is an amazing breakfast location! We stopped by twice on our way toward the south side of the island and both times the food and drinks were perfect. They have a good amount of seats for dine in, but there are also lots of people ordering to go as well. Food menu contains all the usual suspects for breakfast (omelet, breakfast sandwich/burritos, etc), plus loco moco, and burgers, sandwiches, paninis, and wraps for lunch, and a bunch of pastry options. We tried out the veggie omelet -- delicious -- plus two scones (which were giant and took us multiple snacking attempts to finish), the sunrise wrap (light and hearty, but finish quickly because the tomatoes will start to soak the wrap), and a breakfast sandwich with portuguese sausage on a croissant. All of these were very solid and filling breakfast options. Also, definitely give their speciality lattes a try -- flavors are great and it's a huge drink! We also found out (accidentally) that you can even upsize them to even larger size! Who doesn't need more coffee? :) Staff was super friendly and quick to greet us (even if it was just to ask us to wait a bit). They were pretty busy in the mornings, so if the parking spots out front fill up, follow the sign for more spots down the driveway (behind one of the buildings). They might not have the same view as other breakfast spots in this area, but they're slightly less busy and well worth it for the delicious food. read more

Absolutely recommend this cafe! There's some indoor seating and two outdoor tables if you want to dine in, but you can also order at the restaurant for to-go. I like a nice hot latte and their specialty honu latte did not disappoint. Great spot for authentic Kona coffee and so much flavoring. Also really fun that among the milk options for your latte you can choose coconut or macadamia nut milk. I thought the coconut milk was a lovely addition to the honu latte. Pairing a sweet drink with a savory egg sandwich turned out to be a good call. Just a short drive away from Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. They also offer lunch. Definitely worth a stop if you're into coffee or want a good food spot in the Captain Cook area. read more

I came here twice in two consecutive days. First visit order took long to fulfill (20+min) for 2 bagels, 2 breakfast sandwiches and 2 coffees. It was busy and only 2 workers in the morning. 2nd visit I pre-ordered online. Order was due by 7:03AM. Arrived at this place at 7:16AM and the order wasn't ready for 1 bagel with cream cheese, 2 coffees, 2 breakfast sandwiches. While driving away, I noticed that they forgot the cream cheese for the bagel. It was too late to turn around. What really gave this place 5 stars in our option was was wonderfully warm service. Kahlayah (hope I spelled that right) was an absolute delight. She was so sweet and patient when we, well, more like I, had a hard time deciding what to order. We started with Kahlayahs favorite which was one of the ones listed in the menu, plus pineapple. I had the bbq pulled pork sandwich and my husband had an omelette. Both we SOOOOOO GOOD! I also appreciated that she took my "extra crispy French fries please" order to the kitchen and they turned out just the way I like them. The servers were very friendly and we got our food quickly. We ordered a pour over and Big Island coffees, chicken and waffles, and the 2 egg breakfast with fish. Food quality/consistency has improved (the breakfast burrito with kalua pork is great ) and the food menu has expanded recently, but the cold coffee options are really inconsistent, taste iffy, or are watered down most of the time. I haven't gotten a good cold brew now in at least 6 months, and I have been going here for 3 years. I no longer order CB for this reason. It's $6.25 - $7 for a 30% Kona/70 Guatemala mix beans, IE it's simply way overpriced, without being delicious like it used to be. My advice: Try the pulled espresso shot drinks instead. read more

This dining experience was a little disappointing. I was expecting amazing coffee since it was $7 and the beans were 100% Kona grown. But it was quite watery and the flavor wasn't really good. Maybe I'm just not used to French press coffee? My husband said his cappuccino was just ok and not very hot. The food wasn't the best. I wanted to order 2 eggs any style and chose poached eggs, but for some reason this could not be accommodated so I had to order a Benedict and have them hold the hollandaise sauce. Makes no sense and cost me $3 extra. :-/ My husband got the Benedict with hollandaise and said the sauce tasted like it could have come from a jar. The 2 women working there were really nice but it was clear that the restaurant was understaffed. It seems unreasonable to only have 2 workers take care of all the cooking, serving, and takeout orders for that whole place considering the number of customers and people coming in for to-go orders. Cute little place, nice people, just honestly had a disappointing salad. Ordered an island goddess salad & added chicken, only 4 small child size pieces. Just expect more for a $14.00 salad of lettuce & cucumber and two tomato slices. Also they were out of avocado which was an ingredient that would make the price understandable... bummer. Stopped here on our way to see the volcano on a Wednesday morning. We had a very pleasant and efficient waitress. Inside of the restaurant somewhat rustic but very comfortable. You have a limited view of the ocean from some seats. The regular coffee and Chai tea were perfect temperature and delicious. We ordered breakfast and commented that the eggs were some of the best cooked omelettes that we've had. They could not have been done any better. Kalua pork omelette and the fried rice omelette we're very tasty. Good portion size and the toast that came with them was done just right. I stopped by here this past Wednesday with my wife. We had visited Southpointe and were back on our way to Kailua whenever I needed an afternoon pick me up. Thankfully, Menehune Coffee was right on the Mamālahoa Highway in Captain Cook and easy to access. The inside of this place consists of a dining room complete with pool table and then a coffee bar where you can order to go stuff. Since I was just looking for a coffee, we went up to the coffee bar and after looking at the menu I decided that the big island latte sounded good. The menu described it as espresso, macadamia nut and coconut. While I can't say that I got much more than a hint of the coffee in this drink, I will say that it was delicious. The coconut and macadamia nut went perfect together and while sweet, wasn't overpowering. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. This coffee was delicious and was the perfect afternoon pick me up that I needed. read more

I can recommend their coffee - it's one of my all time favorites! The coco macnut latte is insanely delicious. But I was extremely disappointed with the Acai bowl. This picture was taken before I had a single bite. I paid $16 with tax and tip for this. It doesn't even fill up half a coffee mug. Not sure how they're not embarrassed to serve this. Menhune Coffee is a cafe/restaurant hybrid. Knowing this now I won't return for a cafe experience as it really doesn't exist. I brought my laptop in to do some work and sat at a back table near a window but being as this really is more a restaurant than a cafe (even though the sign says cafe) I was constantly annoyed by a waitress who felt the need to ask how I was doing every 5 seconds which is anxiety inducing and makes you feel like you're being rushed and should pack up and leave. It's the opposite of the experience you want in a place that claims to be a cafe. The "Cafe" also has A$$hole prices for what you get. You can't get a coffee for less than $5.25 which is 2 dollars more than other local cafes. I figured if I was going to have to take out a bank loan for a coffee I may as well get their top shelf bean (the 100% Kona french press which is $7.25.) I drink black coffee so I get to taste the full body of every blend and I'll tell you this was so watery and tasteless I thought they mistakenly gave me tea. It was horrible and for some reason I got a stomach ache after drinking it. The Generic house blend you can buy at Costco is literally 10x better than their 7.25 bean water. The Bathroom: Should you need to use the bathroom which I did twice you'll discover there is no lock on the door (and if there is it's invisible) which is really nice considering how 8 out of 10 people are too much of a space cadet to consider a courtesy knock before barging in which happened 2 out of 2 times that I used the bathroom. That's really appreciated. The waitress: The waitress didn't like that I wanted to stop being bothered every 5 seconds and then proceeded to treat me like I wasn't going to pay or something by claiming she was about to leave and would appreciate me to cash out, yet for some reason she seemed to be around for almost another hour. If the waitress reads this and you know who you are, and you know who I am try to slow down for a second and recognize two things. One, your establishment claims to be a cafe and a restaurant. Two, people coming in to experience the cafe side of the house (which should be obvious when their solo and pulling out their laptop and/or book) should not be bothered 324097403484 times in their sitting with a "How you doing over here?" it just makes a person feel like they need to leave and that's not the vibe cafes are meant to provide. It's anxiety inducing. If any of you at Menehune Coffee do not like my review then just take Cafe off your damn sign and just call it a restaurant. Problem solved and I would have no place for complaint other than the a$$hole prices for a Shite and minimal product. Personally I would rather snort Noni juice then go here again.
