My friend's daughter is going to Seattle U and we met up with them for dinner and to catch up. This is one of her favorite places to eat and we decided to try it. There is a bit of a wait because it is quite popular. We sat down and the staff was nice and friendly. They were also helpful with the menu. We ordered the Takoyaki with Mentaiko sauce and Yuzu ponzu. We got the original Tsukemen, and my husband had to be the odd man out and ordered the spicy curry ramen. Everything came out quickly and I have to say that everything was so tasty and just right. A lot of people are waiting, so it is a quick turn around, so it's not a place you can sit and talk for hours, so expect to eat and go. Another great ramen place in Capitol Hill, but probably most well known for their tsukemen! I like that they have something called the "hybrid", which is a mixed broth of their red and black broths. Overall, great noodles and ranks as one of my favorite ramen places in Seattle. Whenever somebody asks me for tsukemen recommendations in Seattle, I always refer to Menya. Food I got the black ramen because I love the garlic taste in ramen! Be warned, the broth is pretty heavy though (which makes it more delicious) and a little on the salty side. But these two factors make the noodles taste amazing. The pork belly is seared perfectly and there is a good ratio of meat:fat on it. Highly recommend getting extra if you like pork belly. My girlfriend got the hybrid tsukemen because she wanted to try both the red and black flavors and our server let us know that the hybrid is fairly popular. The tsukemen have wide, flat noodles that make it so easy to pick up and dip in the broth. In addition they are so tasty! The takoyaki has a lot of fun sauces that you put on top and is a lot of fun to choose from! If you can't choose just one, then go for the half & half. We got the mentaiko and curry, and personally I liked the curry one more! I wish they would lay more of the sauce on top of the takoyaki balls. Atmosphere A casual spot that has a lot of paintings and drawings on the walls. Nothing too fancy here and it feels a little too decorative with the paintings and swords. That being said, it's not that noticeable since they are high up on the walls and you will be looking down at your yummy food. Pricing Standard prices for ramen in the Seattle area. Our experience here was sadly underwhelming. The ramen lacked flavor and tasted rather watery. You could get better value at other ramen spots around Seattle. Despite it not being very busy during our visit, the service was also slow and inefficient. The first time we went, I wasn't sure if I wanted their famous Hybrid Tsukemen b/c of the spice level, so the nice waiter gave me a side dish of the spice to try. We got the Black Tsukemen & I liked it without it and got it again the next time we came with friends. The broth was thick, rich and flavorful, but we would've liked it more hot temp wise. The noodles were also cold but chewy and thick. (Not sure if that's just how Tsukemen is served). It was still delicious tho and the waitress offered to add a thinner soup since the broth did get saltier towards the bottom. I really liked the chicken karaage. We thought the takoyaki was going to be different flavors but it was just regular takoyaki with yuzu sauce on the side and mentaiko sauce on top. Ok so I've finally eaten a full meal here. Both because of the constant long lines and the fact that I normally don't like tsukemen, I've been sleeping on this place longer than I should have. So my deal with tsukemen is that I don't like fish broth. More often than not it's too pungent/"stinky" for me. So that's why i got the spicy curry tsukemen here, hoping the curry would cover the fish. Everyone else at the table got the deluxe tsukemen though and here's the thing: I REALLY liked my order, and I also REALLY liked the deluxe tsukemen (but mine was still better). It was fishy but in a softer more caressing way instead of a throat punch type of way I've had at other places. Maybe it's because it's half pork half fish broth or maybe it's because this place just does it better, idk. And the noodles. Wow. Best noodle texture in the city. Al dente. Qq. The perfect bite. I've been here a couple times and it's consistently fantastic. Ordering process is delightfully simple, and the $5 specials are crazy good value as well! Trip 1 - hybrid ramen with an ajitama egg. The tonkotsu broth is rich and flavorful! The toppings are perfectly added, taste great, provide texture, and look delicious. The egg was perfectly cooked with a slightly gelatinous yolk, and the pork chashu had a delightful char! This is a fantastic dish. Trip 2 - spicy curry ramen. I always get the traditional bowl of tonkatsu to gauge the authenticity and goodness of a place...the broth did not disappoint in the slightest being rich, velvety and perfectly "salted', not overboard. The tsukemen here is so, SO good. I used to live off of the tsukemen at Tsujita in LA (if you know, you know) and this is the only other place I've found that can match. Never had tsukemen before and this won't be my last. Seeing that the dish was in the name of the restaurant, I felt it was appropriate to order exactly the Original Tsukemen. I came on a Tuesday late afternoon (around 2pm) with my coworkers and we were quickly seated. Whenever I order noodles and soup, I always start by tasting the broth and was pleasantly surprised with the flavor. Menya seems like they are recently opened ramen place in Capitol Hill so wanted to try their ramen! I've been twice and getting seating for dinner time usually isn't a long wait or no wait at all. I ordered the Ramen Curry bowl. I'm not the largest pork fan, but I know pork is huge for ramen. I asked if I could replace the slice of pork with tofu or an egg and they only allowed me to remove it completely and that I'd see have to pay the additional cost for the add one. So I decided to leave the pork in and add a soft boiled egg. I gave the pork a shot and the sear on gave the pork so much flavor definitely changed my opinion of pork in ramen bowls. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and added great substance to the bowl. The curry soup had amazing flavor! I also really enjoyed the thin noodles it came with. I wasn't the biggest of the mushroom slices in the bowl, but all the other veggies were great! I finished most of the soup but got too full to eat any more of the ramen. The waiters are super nice and patient when ordering. They also come by frequently to check on the table and fill up on water. Love the atmosphere of the restaurant. Had a decent amount of seating and the tables were spread apart so you can hear your table clearly. A great (hidden) find in Capitol Hill! Also, pleasantly surprised that this is a chain directly from Japan. Walking in, you feel like you walked into one of the cool, funky, intimate ramen shops in the streets of Tokyo. We were lucky to walk in with a minimal wait, and got a table pretty quickly. Everything we had was delicious! The fried chicken was juicy, and very interesting to have a variety of takoyaki flavors/sauces to choose from (we went with the original and were not disappointed). Since the tsukemen is what they were known for, I chose the original tsukemen and WOW what a great dish! The noodles were a great texture, and the dipping broth was so flavorful and actually quite hearty. So hearty that even though I didn't have a lot of noodles left, I took what was left of my broth home and mixed it with my own noodles (want not, waste not, lol) - and it was still delicious the next day. I've had Menya Musashi when I visited Japan, and the one thing that set it apart from all other ramen places was it's ultra thick char siu. I eagerly tried Menya Musashi in Seattle shortly after it opened here, and I found it faithful to its Japanese root. Since Covid-19 befell us, however, I had not visited this joint for at least 2-3 years now. This time around, I frequented the restaurant with 2 other friends on a Friday at 7pm. We were pleasantly surprised that the wait was only about 20 minutes. After we sat down, I also noted that there were only 1-2 groups waiting at the door for tables at any given time, and there wasn't any wait after 8:15 or 8:30pm. I ordered the hybrid ramen and augmented my bowel with a bunch of add on's: an egg (does not come with the bowl), a 2nd slice of char siu (each bowl comes with a default of only 1 slice - I do not believe that is enough for a grown adult), and bamboo shoots. Because of the add on's, my bowl costed $26 after tax and the tip. Kinda pricey for sure, and I highly suspect it won't fill a grown man's belly cuz I felt just right after finishing the bowl. In my memory of Menya Musashi, the char siu used to be twice as thick. While it has slimmed down considerably, I do prefer the current version because I found the fatter slice a bit much for my liking with a bowl of ramen. The ramen definitely hits the spot immediately. However, it is on the heavier side in terms of its flavors. All 3 of us agreed that this became a bit much after we were halfway through the bowls. Still, I find it an enjoyable treat for me and would return from time to time. One odd thing about our dining experience is how much the servers wanted to kick us out of the restaurant. As aforementioned, there was nobody waiting for a table when we were halfway through eating. However, we were asked 3-4 times if we'd like our check when we had barely finished eating. When we said that they could wait a bit, we were still presented with the check and asked to pay. Also to note, the restaurant was still open and 60% full at this point. What's with the hurry?! The menu has been revamped since the last time I was here. This hybrid ramen for $9.99 is a total steal and their egg +1.50 is as amazing as ever. It is the best ramen egg I've had. I liked the spicy kick of the hybrid ramen which is half spicy and half black sesame. It has just enjoy of a kick to it. The pork was nice and tender but it is a much thinner cut compared to the hunk of pork belly I got the last time I was here. I'm disappointed that we didn't hit this ramen shop at a different time. As it was, when we arrived, I wasn't all that hungry. I was there for my husband, basically. He'd researched places in a certain area that served tsukemen; this was his choice for dinner. We'd walked around the neighborhood a bit (a lot, actually - we must have walked 5 or 6 miles before heading to Menya), to try to make room for the incoming food and beer. Alas, it didn't work. Well - it didn't work *for me*. My husband was starving by the time we sat down. I liked the feel of this restaurant. They have the bar up front, and several tables scattered around. We stepped up to the online wait list kiosk, only to be told we could be seated right away. Hungry as I wasn't, I decided to make my meal a combo. Sometimes I question my own sanity. My husband did the same thing, but at least he had the room for it. We both went with the Black ramen with garlic and sesame (even though the *entire* reason we chose this restaurant was because the man wanted tsukemen...); I chose the gyoza for my starter, and the hubs got the chicken karaage. Both combos came with non-alcoholic beverages. I got the cold green tea, and my husband got a coke. The kitchen was working double-time that night, because our food came out with a quickness. The gyoza was good - crispy where it was pan-seared, mildly chewy where it wasn't, with a decent amount of filling. My husband liked the karaage. The ramen was just okay, in my opinion. The broth wasn't as flavorful as I'd expected, not with the black garlic flavoring, and the color. But, it was a bit thin, and even adding the spices they had on the table didn't do much to help. In the end, I had to get a to-go box (which went to waste, unfortunately). I felt bad, but I couldn't eat a whole lot, and the ramen just wasn't tasty enough to compel me to continue eating.
