Unless significant improvements are made, I believe it's best to stick to your local neighborhood taqueria, taco trucks/stands, parking lot tamale/champurrado ladies, elote man, etc. They're much faster, nicer and they make the food like their lives actually depend on it. During my second visit, I found myself thinking that this place needs more time to improve. While my initial experience a week ago left me impressed by the novelty, my recent visit with my sister revealed several issues. We encountered unfriendly attitudes from employees, long wait times, missing items from our order, and unwelcome surprises. Here is a breakdown of the problems we faced on a Monday night. At Los Mesquites Asados, despite a minimal crowd ( we were there around 5:45 pm before the dinner rush started), the service was slow. My two tacos arrived after a 20-minute wait, missing the sauces. My sister's torta took even longer, and she found bone pieces in her food, prompting her to stop eating out of fear of cracking her tooth. I added the green sauce to my taco after about the third bite and discovered whole lime wedges with the peel on it in my sauce that was given to me on the side. I poured more sauce on my second taco, more pieces of lime wedges with the peel on. Over at La Tameleria, the lack of customer service was apparent as I ordered tamales. The staff's indifference and lack of engagement made the experience unpleasant. The female cashier just stood sideways staring into space and I had to greet her and let her know what my order was. She never faced me, made eye contact or confirmed my order just pushed buttons and handed me my bag of tamales. Additionally, at Entre Nos, the bartender's attitude towards opening my drink was unwelcoming, adding to the overall negative experience. I am hesitant to return anytime soon until they get it together, and I'm going to say it will take a year. Despite the quality of the food being top tier, the issues with service and customer experience overshadowed the positives. This place is nothing short of amazing. Although I visited many of the Northgate markets already this is the cleanest, and most inviting of all. I didn't really get to try the food hall since we came there on a full stomach, but I saw that there was a churro station and a tortilla station and even a guacamole salsa station! Came at 1PM on a Sunday and place was PACKED, parking is free but a bit difficult due to so many visitors. Finding seats/a table inside was also hard, again market was very crowded. Market overall super clean and organized! Buche tacos have nice chewy texture but were under-seasoned; carnitas tacos were super flavorful with mostly lean meat - tacos were $2.50 each, normal sized with generous amount of toppings! Service was friendly - they give out lots of free samples and will text you once food is ready. Tamales were pretty solid - masa was set and moist, not mushy but not dry and crumbly. Didn't have the time to wait in this line but will come back during a weekday. Got a few orders of their chicken and pork tamale. Chicken wasn't as tasty and needed some mole. I also got the strawberry and cream agua Fresca. Quite tasty. They have a bakery inside as well. Lots of varieties. Also an alcohol section. Pretty much a one stop shop for all your grocery needs. This place is sensory overload, in the best possible way - my version of Disneyland, and one of my favorite new ethnic markets! They literally sell everything Mexican under the sun one can think of, from home goods to chicharrones to churros. Definitely reminds me of H Mart, but even more comprehensive - in the sense that after one goes grocery shopping, one can stop to enjoy a meal at the food court or even a drink at the bar. This market is phenomenal for Mexican goods. I think this is how people feel when they visit a h Mart for the first time if you are not from that culture. The store is quite a destination with all of the food markets and stands. The tamales looked great. And I had quite a bit unique tamales which were both sweet and savory. Throughout the store they are ladies giving out free samples of guac, tacos, and meats. The hot fresh tortillas are awesome. If you talk to one of the ladies while they are making it and ask for a sample they will give you a whole tortilla for you to munch on while you shop. After all the hype, I went to see what this location was about. I went and saw. Most likely won't go back again, but I am very thankful that people love this place and this location is able to bring the beauty of the Mexican culture to many. The reason why I most likely won't go back is bc it's more like a tourist spot, which is awesome, but they didn't have as many fruits and vegetable options like the north gate in Norwalk, which is my regular location, has. It's a very chaotic environment full of people. That is to be expected though. They had so many fresh made offerings for visitors such as a ceviche, guacamole, tacos, tamales, and more. Their Pan Dulce fresh and very tasty. Their coffee bar is awesome. They have a little hard goods section that was super cool. Either way, it was fun, it was an experience, but it's to far for me to really make this a regular thing for what they have to offer as far as groceries. I'll stick to my Norwalk location. read more

Fun place for shopping and eating! This grocery store is very well organised and stocked. You can find here your usual favourites from fresh produce, bakery or frozen sections. If you are looking for home cleaning products, they have that too. You shop in nicely decorated and clean place as well which makes your visit worthwhile. The fun part is being able to buy good tasting foods from different stores inside the Mercado. You can buy here the familiar Mexican dishes such as tortas, tacos, soups, churros, you name it. Freshly made and packaged here. To drink I got the watermelon agua frescas very delicious. My hubby got the carne asada burrito. The meat was very good and had a charcoal grilled taste to it. This food hall is amazing and has so many things to try. The whole concept is like a mercado in Mexico. There are different stations throughout the market. You will find tacos, tamales, ceviche, fresh tortillas, fresh salsa, bakery, and churro spot. Not only is there lots of food places but their are different meat market locations. From carnitas to birria, you will find everything cooked to perfection. Inside the market, they have a great produce selection and other staples that you would see in a Latino household. Frijoles, arroz, you name it. They got it all. They have a cool room where all the alcohol is. This is like the most popular areas. You can find lots of beer including Pacifico, Dos XX, Bohemia, Modelo, and many others. There is also a very beautiful wall of all the different tequilas you can choose from. So many to try out yet so little time. I will definitely be back for more since this is the place to be right now. I love going to Mercado, but boy oh boy is it a mission to find a table for a party of 6 - especially on a Sunday afternoon. Eventually we acquired a table after the lunch rush. Once we were seated, my family and I were able to relax a bit (it's so stressful finding a table!). The food court is always happening when I visit. I have never been disappointed by the food. This place is super cool! It definitely isn't what I expected looking at the outside. When I walked it, I was overwhelmed with all the options. There is a market area with groceries, a liquor store, an area you can buy pan dulces, and a churro shop!! If you're ever in Costa Mesa, this place is definitely a "gotta check this place out" destination! It starts the moment you walk into this open, airy, virbrant, organized, and very clean establishment. Its the wonderful aroma of the carnitas being slow cooked that just hits you. That's when you know it's about to go down because even if your belly is full, you'll realize that you're still hungry! The market as a whole is extremely organized and clean. Beautifully arranged fresh fruits, veggies, and fresh meats (no odor coming from the meat counter either, bonus points!). Cute separate sections where you'll find fresh flowers, authentic pottery, cookware, and even religious artifacts/candles. I enjoy walking through the Mexican candy section, dried chilies section, and the bakery of course! Seeing all the fresh salsas and ceviche makes me smile! :)) The food court has an abundance to choose from. The delicious treats from Paleteria La Nena, and Churreria El Moro will not disappoint at all (must try!). There is ample seating inside and outside as well, but it can fill up quick. Friday during peak lunch hour is probably not the optimal time to go if you're in a hurry. You'll have to pack a lot of patience especially trying to find parking and then waiting in line for the best churros. However if you have the luxury of time (or can make time), just take it all in and see everything! Giving this four stars because it's fun walking around and exploring. Lots of samples like Costco, lots of places to eat, also lots of people! We couldn't barely move inside, especially if you have a cart. Definitely not a place to grocery shop during busy times. You will have a hard time maneuvering your cart. Worse thing is if you get stuck behind a group of people that just hugs the aisle instead of walking in line. The place is also chaotic, restaurants and cafes in the middle of grocery shop. While I like this concept, it makes it hard to shop. Also be prepared to pay more $$$. This place is definitely more expensive compared to other Northgate, especially buying cooked foods. I'd say go here if you want to people watch and explore. But if you don't have patience and bumping elbows with other people and trying to find parking, just go to other Northgate. read more

Not only do they have fresh meat & produce, they also have 20+ puestos (stalls) that offer nearly everything from A-Z. I was under sensory overload from the sights & smells. I was hungover, so I had huevos from Las Cazuelas. However, my driver (still not able to drive after surgery) got a chilaquiles burrito w/ carnitas. I should have got the burrito bc I took a couple of bites, and it was excellent. There was so much crispy & tender carnitas. Don't get me wrong. The huevos were very good w/ a nice, tangy red sauce. But the burrito was way better! In addition, we indulged in churros and chocolate fr El Moro fr Mexico. If you have never had Mexican hot chocolate b4, you don't know what you are missing. It is a tad spicy, and after you dip the cinnamon sugar coated churros, you have a thing of beauty. I have had hot chocolate all around the world: Spain, France, Italy, and throughout Latin America. Mexican hot chocolate is my fave bc of the consistency (not thick like European styles), and the notes of spice. I can't wait to return to try more of the puestos, including the bar. Mexican markets are more profitable vs American markets bc they offer things like the puestos. My overall experience here was De Puta Madre (the sh*t). This market is IMPRESSIVE! I know they recently opened, but they definitely bring in the business! The parking alone is an intimidating sight. Spots are tight and they tend to all be full. It's a big parking lot, but they definitely maximized the space, there. There's even valet parking, if you can believe that! Several coworkers have driven over here to grab churros and other treats. The lot has been full since they opened. Last night when I went, it literally looked like a holiday. The parking lot was packed and so was the store. I was literally in shock at the magnitude of the store. It's huge! I think this is the biggest Northgate I've ever been in. Walking in, you're greeted by so much goodness, not only staring you in the face, but also teasing your senses! It smells so good in there. It's hard to decide which direction to go, first. There's plenty of choices in hot food and there's a lot of it. Lines can get long in some spots, but they move quick. The most wonderful thing is that at some stations, you can also check out there, rather than everyone having to wait in long lines at the front. There's also a self-checkout option available. Besides all the available stations of hot and cold food, the store has many others that house everything from pottery and soaps to candy and dry beans and candles. The space was clean, spacious, modern, and filled with interesting finds. Though I've never been to Mexico, this place made me feel like I was there. Wow! Everything you could ever want all in one place. I used to only get horchata at fairs and tamales from street vendors in LA. It's nice that everything is all in one place. Pastries and sweets on the far left and bars/sit down eating on the far right. We went when there was a live mariachi band. I can't wait to come back to try all of the foods they offer. Ceviche is on my list along with the enchilada platter. The amount of thought put into this grocery store is unbelievable. Definitely try to check it out during the week when it's not as crowded. FUN FACT: The churro shop here is actually the first of its kind in the US. It's a popular churro and Mexican hot chocolate store in Mexico City, which is why the lines are so long! A few things to keep in mind... 1) Depending on what time you arrive, parking can be a little hectic. You may have to go around a few times to find a spot. 2) Take a look at what's available to eat beforehand. This can save you some time as it's usually pretty busy and you might want to get in a line quickly to not wait around too long. Lines move at a pretty good pace and you do get your food fairly quickly. 3) As mentioned previously, the place is super busy. You may have trouble finding a table to sit and eat. If someone is with you, one can order the food while the other goes and looks for a table. Keep in mind that others are also doing the same so be courteous and don't sit around for longer than you enjoy your meal. There's plenty to see so you can eat your meal and walk around to digest it a little. The only thing keeping me from giving this place five stars is that I wish there were more tables to sit and eat. Carnitas Don Miguel: - Carnitas burrito $11.99: tender, flavorful, & crunchy meat with overly wet rice but still phenomenal. - Chicharron taco $2.49: uber crunchy tasty bits of both puffed skin as well as meat. I don't know if I'd want a full burrito of it but a taco hit the spot!! Los Mesquites Asados - Pollo Asado burrito $11.99: perfectly cooked chicken thigh meat chopped with fluffy rice and beans, onion and cilantro. Mojo seasoning + slight spiciness from the salsa & the little charred bits made this a hard decision what I liked best. - Carne Asada burrito $12.99: in spite of the wood fire, I felt this was the least flavorful of all the items we had. La Pasteleria - 2 for $1 fresh warm bolillos filled the air with their warmth and carby embrace. The tray & tongs soon followed! I watched them painstakingly assemble the food as a traffic jam backed up with hungry customers. All the carnitas is already made so it was odd it took 15+ minutes to move 4 ppl in front of me who ordered burritos & tacos. The carnitas by the pound was a separate line! Such a cool Mexican market in Costa Mesa! It has a food market inside where you can get authentic Mexican food! I love getting the tacos Al pastor at one of the taco shops inside. We tried out a few places and my favorite was probably the ceviche and birria. The ceviche stand has plenty of options/flavors to choose from. I got the Aguachile and it was so delicious. The shrimp was so fresh and packed with so much flavor. The birria one was great too. The meat was super tender and flavorful. What a vibe! More than a supermarket, it's an immersive food experience. There are plenty of food stalls throughout and samples: chicharrones, churros, pan Dulce, Agua Fresca, tacos, etc. Typical grocery staples in a non traditional supermarket set up. A bustling Mexican food hall with a market? Well Northgate has done it and opened Mercado here in Costa Mesa. It's a huge space with one half being a grocery store with lots of assorted ingredients you can buy and the other half being a bustling food hall with a bar and restaurant and various types of puestos serving different types of food! It has been quite busy every time I've gone in with lots of people coming to check it out since they just opened in late November. There's lots to see here and they even have a bakery inside making fresh breads, a churro shop, a shop making fresh tortillas constantly , and several others making delicious food that you can smell as you walk around! They have everything you could want from Mexico. When I came by recently, I ordered several dishes including birrieria de res and tamales from several of the puestos. Everything here is made fresh and I quite enjoyed how flavorful my food was and how comforting and delicious it was! Nothing was dry or bland and I could see myself ordering everything again! I'm for sure gonna be coming back again since there's so much to cover and it's pretty hard to do it in one trip. This is a great spot to check out with your family and if you are craving Mexican food and want to experience the biggest market in the area, Mercado is the spot to go to!
