Perfect atmosphere for a slow breakfast date. The food was incredible. Eller is clearly serious about sourdough and they absolutely nail the execution. I'm honestly sad to be writing this review because I've been a day-one fan of Eller Bakery. I've never had a bad experience here before, the food has always been great, and the staff has always made us feel welcomed and taken care of. This last visit was unfortunately very different. We came in with a fairly large party, and we completely understood that accommodating a group our size is a lot of work. When we got in line, the employee asked how many people were in our party, which made sense. However, we were then told that we could not all pay separately. This was confusing because payment is taken before you even sit down, so it's not like we were trying to split a bill afterward. Rather than make a fuss, we combined everyone's orders onto one card, totaling around $400. The food and drinks came out fairly quickly, which we appreciated. The reason I felt compelled to write this review, though, was because of how rude one particular employee was during the experience. She was wearing patriotic cat ears and appeared to be one of the baristas. One of my friends ordered a latte with alternative milk, but it seems the order may have been entered incorrectly. I've worked in the coffee industry myself, so I understand mistakes happen all the time, and remaking a drink is usually not a huge issue. Instead of handling it kindly, the employee responded with, "That's how it was put in, the request time has passed, that's our policy," in an incredibly dismissive and rude tone. We were honestly stunned. My friend, visibly uncomfortable, just quietly said "Okay," and the employee walked away. Nothing was offered to make the situation right. This happened after we had already spent hundreds of dollars and tipped before even being served. I'm not someone who enjoys complaining or writing negative reviews, but the interaction completely changed the experience for our entire group. What's most disappointing is that the refusal itself wasn't even the main issue, it was the attitude and apparent enjoyment in being dismissive over a very small and understandable mistake. Came here first thing in the morning when they opened, ordered 3 chocolate croissants. All three croissants were very dry, tasted stale and not a lot of chocolate. For $8/croissant, I had much higher expectations and would have AT LEAST thought the croissants were going to be fresh since it was 7am. This was really disappointing and not worth the price. Makes the perfect spot for photos but other than the ambiance, the food and drinks were just ok. It felt like something we could make at home and my friend's omelet ran a little runny/undercooked. Truly don't understand the hype this place gets. I came here after hearing many great things about their pastries, especially their cinnamon rolls, so I figured I'd give them a try. Could not be more disappointed. -Cinnamon Roll: Man oh man was this dry. Probably one of the worst cinnamon rolls I've ever had. I came in a little bit before noon on a Friday and they only had a handful of them left on display. Went straight home to warm it up and it was as if these had been left out on the counter for 3 days. The dough was not chewy or plush like you'd expect. The frosting stayed pretty stiff compared to classic cinnamon rolls. The flavor profile was OVERWHELMINGLY sour. Like I get having cream cheese frosting which typically adds some tang to any cinnamon roll but both the dough and the icing were far tooooo tart. Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this type of cinnamon roll but this was an immediate no for me. Tried to pass it off to my family and everyone said no thanks after trying one bite. Don't get this unless you like sour and dry cinnamon rolls. -Chocolate Croissant: I think croissants are an excellent way to judge the skill of a pastry shop. Unfortunately, this one was also very telling. I don't see this often when it comes to bakeries that are suppose to specialize in making bread and pastries, but man the croissant was flat and hollow?! After my disappointing cinnamon roll, I only wanted to try half of the croissant in case it was also not good so I cut it in half and warmed it up. You would have thought I bought a hot pocket lol. This croissant had large gaping holes and extremely poor lamination. No discernable flakey layers which is exactly what you want from a croissant. Since they also use the sourdough base for this pastry, it also lends a very pronounced sour taste to the croissant, but that's hardly an issue, all things considered. The shop and parking: The saving graces for this bakery is the interior and patio areas were cute. Staff were also nice. Parking is not good. There are about 8 spots out front, 4 on the left and 4 on the right. They don't connect to each other because the sidewalk starts immediately in front so if you see a spot open on the other side, you have to exit the lot and re-enter because there's no thru road. The back side has some additional parking but many of the spots are reserved for the other businesses and all of them were taken as well. Overall: I spent $17 for 2 poorly made pastries. While I don't think that their food and drinks fully justify the high cost, it was pretty good overall. I love the ambiance and decor of this place. It's a neutral, modern design that I absolutely love. I enjoyed just sitting and spending time slowly eating my food and drinking my latte while taking in how nice this place looked! The Roasted Chicken Pesto ($24), while pricey, was a decently sized sandwich that filled my hubby and me up. The Bread Basket ($5) was much more affordable considering how pricey everything else was. I'm a huge fan of sourdough, so I had to try the bread basket that offered me a taste of their sourdough and baguette. We've been coming here for a couple years now and it pains me to write this. As foodies who value high quality ingredients over everything else, we were thrilled to find somewhere that uses organic ingredients and even mills their own flour! A month ago we started milling our own flour at home and realized how hard it is, and how short the shelf life is, which made us appreciate Eller even more! Recently we came in for breakfast (which runs us $100+ for a family of 4) and asked Mickey (the guy in charge up front) if ALL of their pastries use fresh milled flour to which he responded "Yes everything uses fresh milled flour. This is the healthiest place you'll eat." Something was weird the way he said it though...he sounded almost defensive. Then we were eating outside and we saw a bunch of 25lb bags of flour stacked inside through the window. Obviously those were not fresh milled (and they didnt even say organic). Something smelled off. The next week we came in again, this time we were determined to get answers. We asked the cashier when they run the giant flour mill that's displayed next to the register. He said usually at night, but it wasn't working right now. Then we asked if they use 100% fresh milled flour in their pastries, to which he replied "Yes, everything up here uses freshly milled flour." Hmmmm. Then we asked if the mill isn't working, how are they getting all the fresh milled flour? He started stuttering, thinking what to say, then said they get the flour from someone else who's milling it for them. Oh ok... Then we asked about the giant stack of 25lb bags of flour sitting behind him, and he starting stuttering even more, then finally said "Well...not everything uses fresh milled flour. There are some changes going on right now. Only the items that say 'Heritage' use fresh flour" (which was 3 of the 12 or so items on display). We asked if these were short term changes and if they would go back to fresh milled flour to which he replied "No, these changes are permanent. That's all I can say right now. Sorry." So....TWO different employees lied to us about the ingredients they're using. Obviously the 2nd person had been coached on what to say. Now we are wondering how long this has been going on, and if they were ever using 100% fresh milled flour?!? I don't know what's going on at this place but, when it comes to food, honesty and transparency are MANDATORY. Had they been upfront about this I wouldn't have come to write this review. But if you're going to lie to customers faces, especially ones who have promoted you over the years, well, here's your review. Eller Bakery had been in my bookmarks for months, but I only recently ventured deep enough into Costa Mesa to experience it first hand. And I have to say.. this might be my favorite Costa Mesa coffee shop. Eller Bakery truly does it all. Their baked goods are made fresh daily, their coffee menu is dialed in, and they're stacked in the seating department. I was sort of scared to stop by on a sunday morning because I thought it was going to be packed but quite honestly, it wasn't too bad. They are known for their banana bread latte which I can confirm is really good! I am one of those people who like creamer with a splash of coffee but quite honestly this wasn't as sweet as i expected it to be. A lot of times I can't get past the artificial sweetener taste but this was a good balanced coffee. Beautiful Bakery with Excellent Food (But Very Pricey) This is one of the nicest sourdough bakeries on the Westside. The space itself is beautiful -- great ambiance and a really enjoyable place to sit and have coffee or food. The quality of the ingredients and the food is top shelf. You can tell they care about what they're serving, and overall the pastries and baked goods are excellent. I've also enjoyed their coffee. That said, the prices are extremely high, even by Westside standards. For example, cookies being around $9 is pretty hard to justify. Service is usually good, but I did recently have a disappointing experience with a newer barista. I ordered an espresso and asked for it to be extra hot, but it came out room temperature. When I politely asked for it to be remade, the barista refused to remake the drink, which was surprising and unprofessional. To their credit, I spoke with the manager afterward, and she was extremely kind and professional and personally remade the drink herself. That level of care from management was appreciated. When you get in, you order at the counter and you will be asked if you would like outdoor or indoor seating, in which there is plenty both indoor and outdoor. I will say for the pastries they will run out; if you want pastries you can go at an earlier time. I went in 2 hours before closing and they only had one type of pastry left. I ordered the two eggs plate and the omelette. I enjoyed both of the plates, especially the potatoes they come with. I wish they had more potatoes as they were my favorite. The outside of the potato is crunchy and the inside is soft and savory. I do feel that the eggs weren't seasoned enough but I personally like heavy seasoning. We also bought a mango smoothie and a strawberry smoothie. The drinks were a bit more expensive as these two bottles cost about 17-18 together. The strawberry smoothie was super delicious but the mango smoothie was a bit disappointing. If you're a die-hard sourdough person who loves whole foods, you're going to love this place. Within every baked good, you could taste the whole grains. For that reason, the breads were not my favorite in some ways, I have the taste buds of an actual child, so take my word on this with a grain of salt), but I think for those who enjoy more natural flours and grains, Eller Bakery will be right up your alley. We ordered the eggs Benedict and the two egg breakfast with a cinnamon roll as a treat. The cinnamon roll was decadent and had a unique flavor. The frosting was a little rich for my tastes, but better too much than not enough I think! I wasn't a huge fan of the sourdough biscuit the Benedict was served on. I'm a biscuit purist so the taste wasn't my favorite. You could tell the chicken sausage was homemade, which was nice. The two egg breakfast was solid. The thick cut bacon was delicious. The potatoes, in my opinion, were the star of the meal! They were so good, perfectly seasoned (almost steeped in herby oil), crispy yet soft inside. My dining companion also ordered the banana bread latte, which she really liked. I was a little disappointed there was no chai tea latte on the menu (it is my designated drink), but that is alright. I'm a sucker for a beautiful pastry case, so seeing all the breads and pastries was a delight. The interior is very minimalist and clean. There's also a very nice shaded patio area in the rear (or front depending on where you park). The service was great. We were greeted as soon as we entered and as we left. Ordering at the counter was easy peasy and the server who brought out our food and drinks was attentive throughout our entire meal. Genuinely one of the most fucking confusing dining experiences I've had. I Paid $20 for a cinnamon roll that could double as a doorstop--dry, crusty, and somehow both stale and overbaked at the same time. The chicken sandwich tasted like it had been sitting there contemplating life for a few hours before being served. The service matched the food: cold, uninterested, and somehow slow despite there being literally no line. Waiting 20 minutes with nothing going on around me felt like a social experiment. The place looks nice at first, but the vibe fades quickly when everything else misses. For the price, I expected something at least edible and a staff that pretends to care.
