We tried the vegetarian and fish tacos and surprisingly the vegetarian ones were better. The fish in the fish tacos was overcooked and dry which ruined them. Maybe a wedge of fresh lime could have helped, but not over cooking the fish would have helped more. Definitely recommend the vegetarian tacos! Also they have vegan cheesecake! Waitstaff had zero clue how to organize any customers. Told them to wait outside or inside for a table and then completely forgot about the people waiting outside, even though they took names. Also only one woman seemed to be serving anyone while 3 of the girls just stood around doing nothing. They need to train these girls better, they're confusingly unprofessional for such a good location. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. One of the best seafood i've ever had. I ordered the linguini with mussels. The food took a while to come but it was definitely worth the wait. Waitress was very pleasant. Will definitely go here again if I ever visit PEI again! read more

We're in Charlottetown for a conference at the Delta and spotted Merchantman right across the street. The patio looked very inviting on a warm evening so a group of seven of us grabbed a spot there and sat down for drinks and dinner. We spent several hours sitting in the shade under the umbrella and enjoying our drinks and dinner. The location is perfect if you're in downtown Charlottetown, hitting the board walk or staying in one of the downtown hotels. It's a great little spot, lots of room indoors and a great patio on the sidewalk. Our server was friendly, but not very fast. She didn't seem confident in her abilities to carry more than one or two plates or glasses - and because of that, our empties piled up on the table and we had to have her and others clear them several times. The drinks were great - lots of local beers on tap, and some interesting mixed drinks for everyone who was interested. Co-workers really enjoyed the berry mojito as well as the Beach Chair beer. The food was delicious! Crab legs were HUGE and very fresh. Perfectly cooked and accompanied by two sides of your choice. I had the salmon with tomato salsa and two sides - it was perfectly cooked and SO good! For dessert a co-worker and I shared the chocolate torte. It came warm with vanilla bean whipped cream - not a huge piece but the perfect amount to give you a little taste of sweet after your meal. read more

Stumbled upon this place because we couldn't find the actual restaurant we intended to go to, and were too hungry to go scavenger hunting, I was delightfully surprised to be seated at the bar (since all the tables were taken) with plenty of room and great wait service. They advertise their hamburgers all about this place, and my mother, who came with me here, thoroughly enjoyed hers, so I can only recommend their cows as far as what my mommy thinks. Aside from that, I had the potato chip nachos.... AMAZING! I don't know how else to describe some invention comprised of PEI's staple crop, it works just as well as regular nachos, but has a great kick to it because their potatos, and yet comes with everything nachos would (guacomole, salsa, sour cream, beans, jalapenos, etc.). I would recommend getting them and also ordering the chicken with it, as it is very tender and moderately spiced, perfect for nachos. I had their rum, which is apparently unique to them for over 100 years... It didn't taste much different from Captain Morgan; it's not worth getting excited over, but its priced well enough that you might want to give it a try. This place is definitely affordable for food, you cans teal away for under C$10 without alcohol, but why would you want to do that? The wait staff is very accommodating, they check on you often and are very knowledgeable about what goes on in the kitchen, don't be afraid to ask! 4 stars because of their unique menu offerings, solid atmosphere and great wait staff. read more

We came here on a recommendation. One meal was a one star and one meal was a five star. The waiter was in desperate need of some training - perhaps it was his first night. He was nervous and not social. He forgot our oysters and said 'oh, sorry'. We got the entrees and salads at the same time. I give one star for the scallops and mussels pasta - bland and light on seafood. Perhaps a new line cook. The cioppino was outstanding with tons of seafood and bursting with flavor. My experience has been mediocre despite the positive reviews from the users before. I had meant to try another local restaurant but could not get a table until 2 hours later. Merchantman was close by our hotel (literally directly across from the Delta) with an assuring amount of patrons inside with a good ambiance. Being my first time to PEI, I had been having a lot of burgers on the road here and was ready to have some seafood. Oysters are actually a bit on the pricey side - $36 for a dozen - though it is fairly fresh. Otherwise, nothing else of my meal is that great. We had the halibut and the fish and chips - maybe it would have been better if we got the burger. They have a few PEI beers on tap which is always great when visiting a new city. All in all this is a fairly safe choice when looking to eat around the island but I suspect there must be better choices around the corner. read more

After being fished out for the last couple of days, some colleagues and I came for a nice little lunch before returning back to the work chaos. Due to the wind we sat inside but on a nice day this patio is adorable. Everyone but myself got the clam chowder and loved it, whereas I ventured for the pork tacos -- although I wanted something substantial and a change up from fish I wasn't overly impressed with my entree. The sauce they put on top was a bit much and I left feeling as unhealthy as ever but their home made fries were nice. Visited Sunday evening. Loved ambiance, music a bit loud. Service was great. Generous portions of our two starters, a bowl of seafood chowder and mussels. We must have been late in the day and seafood already been skimmed off the top of the pan, for the chowder was mostly vegetables and almost no seafood. Restaurant did make a price adjustment when we commented on lack. Garlic muscles not quite as spicy as I hoped (but helped the chowder). Side house salad very nice and beets well cooked. The burgers!!! The burgers!!! The burgers here are delicious. You have to try the East West Burger. It is ridiculously good. The pickled ginger, cilantro, and cabbage combination is to die for. The burger contains island beef, and is just bursting with flavour! You have to try it! No...you MUST try it. Another option is the Curry and chips. The fries they serve are excellent, and the curry they spread on top of it is incredibly aromatic. Great! Service here is a swing and a miss. Some of the wait staff here seems very grumpy, while others (like the bartender,) are incredible personable. The location is superb, right at the foot of Queen st, on the corner of Water St. Go! What a nice surprise! After walking out of 3 of the other popular restaurants in the area due to poor first impressions, we wandered down the street to The Merchant Man. We were greeted right away, and grabbed seats at the bar so we could catch the Jays home opener. Guiness on tap? Yup! We ordered the smoked salmon board, and boy did we choose right! 2 thick rolls of smoked salmon, capers, warm pita triangles, spring mix w a balsamic drizzle, dill cream cheese, red onions, and olives all partying together on a charcuterie board. It was all excellent, but I thought the olives were a weird choice, and could maybe be subbed for avocado? After 10pm the oysters are 20/$30, so that was a no brainer. 4 varieties of local slimers, served w a tasty cocktail sauce. Our server was lovely, but her late night replacement seemed to be enjoying himself noticeably less. Don't worry though bud, your sour mug wasn't enough to ruin our good time. Merchantman Pub, thanks for being just far enough off the beaten path so as to not be overrun by the friday night college party crowd. Next time I'm in Charlottetown, I'll be back. read more

If you think 41 dollars before tip for two beers, a burger (no side) and average service is OK then go ahead and visit this place. The burger love burger was OK, just OK. Most foods here are just average on my previous visits. So, today I ordered two beers, a version of half and half (Guinness on top of a Murphy's own beer, blue berry). Any where else, not just in Charlottetown, everywhere else, they charge you the more expensive beer's price, which would have been about 9 dollars tax in, here its a frigging 13! They charged me 4 half pints of beer without warning. WTF! Never going back ever again. read more

Went for a birthday, got the fish tacos, they had avocado on them but avocado wasn't mentioned on the menu. I have a severe allergy to avocado. I informed the staff and they were very apologetic & accommodating. I'm giving a poor review because I wanted to reach out to the manager about the lack of information on the menu, especially because I spent the night with a swollen face & lips & vomiting blood. I reached out to the manager & he justified my allergic reaction by stating they wanted to keep the menu simple & a one page document. Luckily I had Benadryl & my epipen on stand by but I'm sorry, wanting to keep the menu simple & failing to disclose ingredients can be life threatening & is very misleading. It was his lack of empathy, it was a "I don't really care about your allergy we want our menu to be simple & cheap to make'. The menu item did mention there was pico de gallo but no traditional pico has avocado, he said that their pico was not traditional, which is completely fine but you have to tell the consumer that to avoid situations like LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIC REACTIONS!!! I did speak with Mr. Murphy who was very apologetic & was going to get to the bottom of the issue which I absolutely appreciated! There are many MHG restaurants we still enjoy, but are much more cautious with ordering. Thank you to Mr. Murphy & the waitress's we had that evening, no thanks to the manager, you can't tell someone having a severe allergic is worth having a simplified, misleading menu. read more

This is a really nice restaurant close to the wharf in Charlottetown. My husband and I came here with our young daughter and we found the food and the service is be very good. Having said that, we feel that for a restaurant of this price point and specializing in shellfish, we were a bit surprised to have our food served with thin paper napkins, perhaps especially because we were eating big juicy burgers, a lobster and oysters. Have you ever tried to eat a lobster or any kind of shellfish with a paper napkin? Even worse, we needed to ask our server several times for additional napkins as she kept forgetting our request. I thought that it was just us who felt that paper napkins were ridiculous in such a nice restaurant and then I happen to over-hear the couple seated directly next to us commenting on the cheap-flimsy napkins and they, too, were trying to get the server's attention so that they could have more napkins. We spent just under $200 for the three of us to eat at this seafood restaurant and for that amount of money linen should be a given. Leave paper napkins for McDonald's and other fast food restaurants! And since the table is not set with any linens, I believe it would be a nice contrast to have linen napkins and at the very least, it would make for a much less messy dining experience. read more

We were tired and exhausted, arriving in Charlottetown around 9pm after a long drive. We were staying at the Delta and they pointed us to the Merchant Man for dinner since it's right across the street. We walked in and were seated in the lounge, perfect. The "winter dine" menu was on, so we both chose that: a three course meal for $25. What an excellent choice. The food was delicious, service was awesome, and the place itself is nice to sit in. This was my second time trying lobster rolls in general and their lobster roll was decent. The combination of the sauces was overpowering and couldnt taste the actually lobster. If you're looking for a great pale ale, I definitely recommend their Vic Park Ale.. nice citrus taste. read more

Had nachos here on the outside patio during lunchtime. The potatoes were amazing and the spices wonderful. The salsa tasted like it came directly out of the Tostitos jar, however. Overall, nice spot to eat out doors, close to the main street but not too noisy. read more

This restaurant has amazing food and an amazing staff. When I came here I had my first lobster and it was delicious! The service however was extremely slow (over an hour) as we came on a Monday night during the dinner rush, the food however was definitely worth the wait! We have come here for the past three summers. Last year it was our very first stop when arriving on PEI. The fish tacos were the best we had tasted. Sadly, our experience this year was not the same. Instead of three smaller tacos, MP served two bigger tacos. The portion was probably about the same but we found the new tacos to be overly dry...dry fish, dry taco shell. Other members of our party got the fish and chips and were equally disappointed. The MP fish and chips were not nearly as good as you can get other places such as Brits in Charlottetown or Richards in Covehead. The calamari was greasy and the flavor not nearly as good as On the Dock in Rustico. The fish chowder was good but we all agreed it needed more salt. We were very disappointed. The services as great and the location wonderful...but the food was just "eh" according to our entire party of six. read more

Took an hour to get our food. Two out of four of the meals were edible. Mashed potatoes were as if they had been cooked yesterday and sat under the warmer all night, burger was like charcoal. Salmon with garden salad and root vegetables was good, haddock with rice and fries was good. Fish and chips tasted like salty salmon with too much dill. Very hit and miss. Wasn't the best place for a birthday supper, people ended up cranky in the end. read more

Ordered the mussels in curry butter sauce for an appetizer. Delicious!! Curry was mild and mussels were cooked to perfection. Extra bun for sopping up the liquid was greatly appreciated. Ordered the fish & chips for main course. First impression was that it was a huge portion. Cutting into the fish we found it was mostly batter. Fries were tolerable. I would not recommend anyone to order the fish and chips. Better off having the pan fried haddock. When the waiter asked how was the meal we said that the fish was terrible because of the greasy batter. He apologized and when he returned with the bill he told us that the two orders of fish and chips had been taken off the bill. Needless to say we gave a very large tip! I would definitely go back again but would not order fish and chips. read more
