I had been meaning to leave a review here for over a month. I was in San Antonio for work related training and came here for coffee several times. The place is super cute and clean. They didn't have it open completely at full capacity and mask were worn by staff. Sanitizer was easily accessible as well which was appreciated. I ordered drip coffee, iced and hot vanilla latte the times I did go in all delicious. The drip coffee was smooth, strong yet not the acidic taste some strong coffee can give off. They had condiments available along with liquid vanilla flavoring which was so good. I ordered an almond croissant one day which was good. Another day had a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. Service was amazing and staff was very friendly and informative. I took a couple of bags of coffee to go and they grinded it for me. The coffee bags can seem pricey but well worth it. Also prefer to support smaller coffee shops when I can. Will definitely return when back in SA. read more

As I pulled up into the only empty parking space after spotting the Local sign, I thought, "Can it really be true?" Alas, a second Local Coffee is open in the Medical Center area! My go-to is a Iced Coffee with Half & Half. I was happy to see that there are two area to dress your drink. I'm easily mesmerized when the coffee and creamers begin to marry... Such pretty swirls! Compared to the location at The Pearl, this location is much brighter and larger than the original location. Additionally, there is plenty of seating for all of the future doctors, dentists, PT's, nurses, and more to cram for tests. A bonus, you can get sweets from Bakery Lorraine. I'm feeling a little sad for the Smoothie King next door. I'm sure Local will be expanding into that spot soon! read more

I spent the most beautiful and relaxing morning sitting at Merit Coffee and throughly enjoying the coffee, overall ambiance, and great service. I see why they put this store in the airport. Highly recommend: - Capuccino - Their enamel pins In terms of COVID response, they're doing great! - You turn over a sign when you leave a table to notify staff to clean. - - Merit closed off every other table to ensure social distancing. - There are floor markers to encourage social distancing while in line. This was my third visit to this particular outpost of the Local Coffee chain. It's a little smaller than some locations, and definitely has a more sleek, modern feel than others (almost too much so). But, I come here for the coffee, and they never disappoint. My drink on this visit was a latte breve with sugar free vanilla syrup, and it was awesome. Temperature, aroma, taste, and "artistry" were all just right. This place is definitely a winner! read more

Went to Local coffee in the medical center since it's the last location I was missing to visit! The one at the Pearl still my favorite! This location is nice, spacious and bright! The barista that helped me was so nice and helpful! It has wifi so you can do work, homework etc here I ordered the caramel latte which is really good and not too strong! It's a very relaxed cafe! I love the atmosphere since I work for myself and I come here to do my work and drink a good cup of java! read more

I enjoyed a Chai Tea Latte with steamed milk and a Hippie Bar. The tea was delicious, not evenly sweat and the right temperature. Also, please try the bar, it is very tasty. I really don't give glowing reviews every day. Some days I have to implement manners and morals: "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all". This is not one of those days. Local Coffee is the place I dreamed of on the other side of the rainbow. The menu is minimal, as is the decor and work spaces. Simplicity is the perfect backdrop to mount exceptional libations and exquisite, classically made pastries. Plainly put, my handmade coffee from Ethiopa tasted beyond my wildest dreams. I write this review between tears, so overwhelmed am I by the experience of tasting a potion so numbingly magical. The elixir was plainly presented alongside my equally formidable quiche which originated from the Bakery Lorraine next door. I had no idea..., literally no clue, coffee could be this,...DO this [to me]. And I have been an avid part of the coffee culture since trained as a barista my freshman year in college. What I love even more was the presence of a rare creature amongst many 3rd- wave coffee houses: little eco-friendly sucralose packets next to the cream. Sacrilege! I know...but it's what made my coffee perfect. This was a rainy Halloween morning I will never forget (the story leading up to this unexpected discovery being a long, romantic journey from Dallas to San Antonio, where a young suitor hires a rideshare from the airport at midnight to surprise the girl that holds his heart). What happens with the lovers? I will never know, but there is one sure thing: I will never miss Local Coffee when in San Antonio. read more

Good music and good coffee. What more could you ask for? I have been going to this coffee shop for some time now as I find that it's a great place to study. This location can be at times crowded, but if you find yourself a spot to study then it's all worth the hassle! I recommend their espresso. Local Coffee is a minimalist dream married with a good deal of stellar barista skills. I believe I had a flat white here, and they served me with a beautiful Japanese tea-style cup. It was in this gorgeous mint green glaze, and as someone who grew up firing pottery, this was welcomed as an immediate feeling of pleasure in life's small joys. The coffee is strong but low in acidity and bitterness. With a look around the bakery, you know they invest in top-notch machinery for the beans. Money is spent where it matters. To pair with my drink, I had a delicious raspberry pastry with just a hint of powdered sugar. The raspberries were tart yet sweet with the perfect syrupy yet still whole texture really great pastries are made of. I ate the entire thing within a matter of seconds, I'm proud to say. I'm sure it wasn't the most elegant thing to witness, what with chipmunk cheeks and all... I loved studying in this location. Something about the acoustics and high ceilings make conversations nearby into pleasant white noise. I found I was able to get through over an hour's worth of studying without getting up to jitter around or become distracted by snippets of other loud conversations. If you are a student wanting somewhere to escape to that is both clean and easy to focus in, I suggest Local Coffee on a quiet Saturday morning. read more

This is a good place to study... when it's not busy! I would come after work anytime from 5-8. It was full but I was lucky enough to have people packing up to leave when I would come in. The Espresso shot is legit - very rich and served with a small side of sparkling water to cleanse your palate The Americano (shot of espresso + H2O) - also rich and flavorful The Cinnabon nice flaky and not too sweet, good for two - Just the way I like it! Awesome coffee shop at the Pearl District- the staff was patient in explaining the various options and origins of the coffee beans. In addition, I like how they have a lactose free milk option in addition to the typical non- dairy options (soy/ almond milk). We got the cold brew and iced latte which were both wins in our books! Tried this place for a morning meetup bc I was getting tired of Starbucks. It is very slightly less expensive than Starbucks and the atmosphere is cool to check out. I ordered the green tea and it was neat how they served it in the kettle. I also got the blueberry lemon muffin which had a good flavor but was dry. Beautiful new Medical Center location was a sure treat to visit! Loved how clean and bare everything was, there's plenty of tables, outside seating, and seats at the bar. The ordering process was easy and we didn't have to wait long in line, we came in at 9AM on a Saturday and by 9:15AM the place was flooded with people. The new Local location is every student's wet dream. High ceilings, perfect lighting, big windows, spacious seating, abundance of seating (compared to the Local @ Pearl), endless outlets, fast wi-fi, and of course, amazing amazing coffee. (You may laugh at the high ceilings thing, but it really makes a difference when you're settled in for several hours of studying. It helps keep you not feeling so claustrophobic.) Like the original Local location, the coffee here is really spot on. They have all of the classics - latte, macchiato, cold brew etc. My favorite thing though is just their regular coffee because for ~$3.00 you get UNLIMITED refills. And the coffee is really strong, much stronger than Starbucks, and tastes wonderful. I also love their latte; when iced, it comes with a bit more volume and can last longer. Tip: On weekends, Local is really crowded around 10AM-2PM. After 2PM, it starts to clear out a bit and seating becomes more available. There's also outdoor seating that's usually free, so dress for the weather if you prefer to be outdoors. read more

Finally! The wait is over guys! Good coffee and pastries to be had at the med center! The location is prime! It's an easy walk across the street from main campus. The interior is bright and spacious, ideal for studying or hanging out with friends. There is one large table and several smaller ones. On peak study times/days you might be hard pressed to find space but around 9am on a normal weekday, there was ample space to be had. One major pro is the amount of outlets built into the seating. Clearly a smart and thoughtfully designed space. Pastries are the same as any Local location. I try not to overindulge here since they are massive but I've already eaten a large cookie and pop tart. I think the chocolate pop tart is better than the strawberry one since it is less sweet and tastes more breakfast-y. The affogato is made with Lick ice cream (yum!) and the Americanos are delicious. The loose leaf teas smell wonderful and taste incredible. My favorite is the jasmine green. Ask for more hot water if you need it. They brew Merit coffee and there are endless refills. But the coffee is incredibly acidic so you might only need one. So... Once you find a table to study at, there is no need to leave. read more

Absolutely stunning, and that's cause I don't even drink coffee on the regular, unless it's my Keurig chai lattes or mocha java. Service is so expedient - the décor of the place is just fabulously noteworthy yet very cool, clean and crisp - and the overall aesthetics/parking of the interior and exterior are both very accommodating. Rear parking in case the front is full, with a back door for your convenience! They've got little gadgets and gizmos and coffee/water dripping from faucets; the whole process seems very complicated. But I am so glad that all I have to do is bust out my Apple pay and soon enough I will be sipping on & enjoying their tasty, caffeine-induced creations. Pair this with a delectable pastry from BL (without having to travel across town to get it) and you've got an out-of-this-world, winning breakfast combination! I finally got to try that legendary pop tart that I've heard so much about. Oh yeah, you can bring Fido and sit out in their (small) outdoor patio area. With this Local Coffee right along my 9-minute commute to work, this is both a curse AND a blessing. Oh well, happy sipping! read more

Finally a real coffee shop in the medical center. They have teamed up with some great coffee roasters, (counter culture and stumptown to name a few).. I'd say it has a Scandinavian design with white smooth walls, grey hues, and Carrera counters it gives this place an edge and makes you want to drink your coffee in house each time. The craftsmanship is beautiful and I love the earth tones thrown in for some of the tables and stools. Staff has been friendly each time I've been in, and even surprised me with a birthday latte on the house! (Thank you again) They have milk alternatives, which is a huge plus especially for those that have allergies like myself. Options are--lactose free milk, almond &soy milk I think they really thought this out and constructed this shop for individuals that need an outlet for their device, medical students there is a plug almost anywhere you choose to sit! **{Only thing as I mentioned I do like the decor it's all beautiful but the functionality of those three legged stools right by the espresso bar are terrible they don't have good balance} read more

What is not to love about Local Coffee? Their quality in the coffee they serve? Their consistent friendly service? Their spacious and relaxing atmosphere? Their unique pasties from Bakery Lorraine? Yes, yes, yes! I am obsessed! As if I wasn't already with their other 4 locations... I was beyond excited for this location in particular to open up since I do live 5 minutes near the Medical Center. I was growing tiresome of driving 25 to 30 minutes for a good cup of joe, or drinking the mainstream Starbucks brand. So THANK YOU LOCAL COFFEE COMPANY! This location is beyond spacious with marble counters, gold door handles, comfy chairs, booths, couches, bar top, and complete with outdoor seating. Caution, the UTHSC students have finally caught on to this gem, so seating space may be a little tight during several times of the day, but I have always been lucky enough to snag a small table or couch. The parking may also become congested since the shop is shared with Smoothie King and other retailers to come. But there is parking in the rear of the store, so once again, no worries! The employees and baristas are always very friendly and knowledgeable with every visit. I feel all Local employees are friendly, but Medical Center takes the cake in top notch customer service. This location is great if you are grabbing coffee to-go, studying alone, or meeting up with friends. There are outlets everywhere, so that is another outstanding factor compared to other coffee shops. Job well done Local! I am obsessed! read more

Stopped in for a quick iced coffee and had a delish cold brew! They had two coffee options and a bar of the basic sugar, creamer and even some honey! After I ordered and made my coffee I asked for caramel and the woman provided the caramel as well. The taste of the coffee itself was far from average and I'm glad I opted out of my usual Dunkin/ Starbucks route. read more

Limited parking and very bitter coffee. Not a fan. The staff was very friendly so that was nice. Unfortunately, when I went in the coffee tasted like coffee that had been left in the pot overnight and reheated the next day. Not sure if they just need to recalibrate the machine or something so I may give them another try earlier in the day. Good coffee makes me happy. Local makes me happier. While lots of students from across the medical / health school are studying hard, usually I'm running in before work for coffee to go. As I wait I look at them with their laptops and ear buds and I wish I had time to sit and enjoy the ambiance and the music and sit and have my coffee in this cool joint but alas I cannot. They have coconut milk and almond milk (each for a little extra $). They have delicacies from bakery Lorraine (and well those are insane). I can tell you that I have missed them a couple of times because it is so dark and their lighting is a bit low (great for the environment). There is parking in the back-I usually forget that. The front parking lot can fill up quickly and it's sort of difficult to get out of sometimes. So if you in med center and want a really good cup of coffee- stop by and enjoy. read more

The employees I talked to were also super super nice. What a great atmosphere. I ordered a decaf latte with almond milk and it was beautiful and delicious! I wish there was more patio space where I could bring my pups, and I'd love to see more savory rather than sweet food items (although the muffins, pop tarts, and cookies are awesome!). read more

If I'm ever in the mood for a stylish beginning to my day, or afternoon jumpstart, Local is an excellent choice within the Medical Center. I'm a tea devotee, and the loose leaf they serve at Local, Kilogram, is high quality. The jasmine green tea is fragrant and flavorful; the jasmine essence is dynamic and natural without being heavy. A nice bonus; this jasmine green tea is heavily caffeinated, in comparison to other fine jasmine green teas, making it perfect to get your buzz on. The loose leaf tea is served in freshly assembled bags in an individual teapot, allowing for self-controlled steeping and lots of heat retention. Plus, the quality of the leaves are high enough that re-steeping with complimentary hot water is possible. I've ordered a variety of the Bakery Lorraine pastries, which have all been tasty, though not revelatory. The handmade pop tarts are certainly interesting; they're like giant holiday shortbread cookies filled with raspberry jam, and topped with sugary psychedelic crumble. Part of what makes the ambience so pleasant is how they've given patrons 'room to breathe' with the seating arrangements. The downside of this is of course seating can be hard to come by. I wish they would put a little sign up in the one large round table asking that only parties of 3 or more sit there; on multiple occasions a group of friends and I have had to huddle at a table meant for a single person because some hardcore student had spread their coursework over that entire round table. read more

Local coffee is a pretty nice coffee shop in the Medical Center where we desperately need these kind of places! So tired of Starbucks. I've only tried their brewed coffee, so I can't speak to the quality/taste of all the speciality stuff. I think having UNLIMITED refills on your drip coffee is awesome. It suggests they care that one will spend quite a long time in their space and that's perfectly ok. See my review for Aspen's Brew which doesn't offer this and actively discourages college students from frequenting their shop! Anyway, it's right across from UTHSC or whatever the hell the acronym is. Prolly a good business strategy. And, you know, the norm for most good coffee shops! They offer token pastries that I haven't tried, but they look tasty. They have macarons which look delightful as well. The space is huge but they don't use it well. There is a huge bar--prolly too big that takes up so much room. They could prolly pair it down and create more space for tables/seating. That brings up another gripe. The seating they do have is utilitarian and functional rather than comfortable. I wish they would have more oversized chairs to give it a homey feel to the place. As it is it feels very trendy but cold, industrial, and uninviting. Maybe that's just me. The problem is that it can get crowded so they run out of chairs quickly. I just think they could do better with this enormous space to accommodate more people. I suspect this place, like others, would be ridiculous around the end of the semester. Oh, and all the baristas that I've spoke with are friendly. Anyway, Local Coffee is a great respite from Starbucks. It's a good space to study/write if you can find a chair. As a bonus, lots of good-looking people come here because it's trendy, so you can people watch. P.S. Their wifi isn't super fast but it's reliable (5 Mbps down right now). read more

Awesome across the board. Facility is modern, spacious, and super clean. Staff are prompt, cool, and attentive. They offer free wi-fi. I ordered a cappuccino which was beautifully and artfully presented. The preparation here is no-nonsense with a focus on the product. The espresso in my cappuccino was stellar: super smooth, silky, and bright. No nasty flavors needed. I happened to be sitting near the Director of General Operations and the Store Manager, both of whom asked me about my experience, were personable, and extended a hearty handshake. My hat goes off to locally-owned small businesses that do things right. We ALL need to drive the mega-average coffee shops and support Local Coffee. read more

I'm a fairly cheap coffee drinker. I appreciate gas station coffee as much as I appreciate more expensive coffee. Local Coffee is some of the best coffee I've had. Smooth and well brewed for a light and non bitter taste. I always get an iced coffee with a homemade pop tart. Amazing combination. My roommate who joins me gets a decaf latte with macaroons. Nothing is ever disappointing. I wish the prices would come down slightly but I suppose you pay for quality. I've been to this location a few times and enjoy the welcoming staff and service.
