You know, I realize I never reviewed Meritage after eating here several times. I'm a member at Callaway and come here every few months to pick up my wine. I tend to make a half day out of it and enjoy my free glass of wine and then open a bottle while enjoying lunch at Meritage. The food is excellent. I try to eat something different each time because love goes into the food. First time I had the burger and fries (duh). This time was different. Started with the Heirloom Tomato and Burrata. Plump juicy tomatoes, creamy burrata, and the crostini was perfect. Added balsamic glaze was so delicious. The waitress brought out an octopus dish, and I forget what it was called. It was chilled. Never had octopus before but she insisted that it was Chefs specialty. (Perks of a being a member). Interesting. It was very tasty, I'm just not a fan of octopus. I ordered the beef bourbuignon. The beef was so tender it fell apart barely touching it with my fork. The potatoes were creamy and the carrots/onions were like they just got pulled from the garden. Such a hearty and delicious meal with great gravy. Finally, my girlfriend got the pesto pasta (again). Same thing she got last time because she liked it so much. The pesto was some of the best I've had. Really earthy taste to the mushrooms and pesto. The pasta was perfectly cooked. Oh! And since it was my birthday, I got a bread pudding as compliments. Food was solid all around. In my opinion the pastas and the braised beef with mashed potatoes are the best tasting dishes at the restaurant. Pasta is cooked al dente, has a good texture and salted well. The flavors in each are very hearty, I was surprised for Temecula, I think it's the best restaurant pasta I've had there. The burger was average, nothing crazy. Mine came out a bit dry, and can say the same for the steak as well. Came here while reliving a long weekend my partner and I had a few years ago. I'm not sure why we were so entranced by this place (must e been the wine), but our return was altogether less than interesting. The vibes haven't changed since last we were there. The service itself was a bit on the slow/unaware side while the food itself didn't live up to expectations. The duck confit should've been moist and tender from, you know, the process of confit. Instead the meager leg was quite dry, with it's time under the heat lamp likely a contributor. For the price and quality, this isn't really a place I would visit again anytime soon. read more

Our friendly server took our drink order and brought us a couple of glasses of wine while we looked at food menu. This place has beautiful views at Sunset, that being said I would grab a bottle of their Profondo a Cab Syrah blend I believe and sit outside on the bench to enjoy. Our server was George, nice enough guy, but he was complacent at best, we were likely his last table and he was cleaning up so he wasn't around much we ordered an appetizer and a main dish, presentation was nice, food quality substandard, and dessert lacking. My family had made brunch reservations here before we began our own Wine Tour. We were satisfied, but nothing food wise was reallg extraordinary here. I think their best asset is location. Located at the Callaway Winery, Meritage is serving some stunning views of the vineyard. Callaway itself is a beautiful winery, some Meritage is benefitting off of that. The restaurant itself is very clean and classy. It kind of gives a greenhouse, garden escape vibe which was actually really nice. They are dog friendly as well too. Staff was very friendly. Host greeted us with a smile. What stood out to me was how helpful and accomodating they were to my handicapped 90 year old grandma. There was some stairs to get to our table. The staff put her wheelchair in a safe place and even offered his arm to help guide her down the stairs, I was impressed. Food was decent, but not outstanding. It was average tasting brunch food that got the job done. I had the salmon lox, and I'm on the mission to find the best one, and this was not it. My sister in law had it too and we both agreed that it was lacking in the cream cheese, the best part, and we both had to ask for more. My dad said his sandwich was kind of dry ans boring like it was missing more, and the fries were disappointing. Best part was the creme brulee, but that could still use some work too. Meritage's strong point is the atmosphere and views. If you are looking for a nice atmosphere to eat on your wine tour, then this is a good spot. But don't count on it ti have outstanding food. It's been years since I ate at Callaway's Meritage restaurant. Gorgeous views, beautiful property overall. The restaurant is covered patio seating with large windows that give a great vineyard view facing west. We were there on a Tuesday, which was a low crowd day and perfect weather! Service was excellent! Margarita pizza was yummy! We used our SIP Temecula passes to grab a glass of wine from the tasting room before heading over to the restaurant, finished that glass and ordered another glass at the restaurant! I chose a white wine, so I can't offer any comment on whether their reds have improved from when we last tasted here years ago. White was good (probably a viognier, I can't remember). They don't have air conditioning, so be aware if planning to dine on one of Temecula's blistering hot summer days. They do have heaters, though I could not tell you how well they work to keep you warm on our sometimes cool winter weather. Enjoyed a beautiful day today at Callwaway and became members. Enjoyed a beautiful view upstairs for sunset and finished off for dinner at the restaurant. We ordered almost everything on the menu and honestly my 5 stars is mainly for Sam! Although we had our own server, Sam continuously checked on us and helped us pair our dinner with the best wine. We kept asking for suggestions and he was on point with his recommendations and took the time to share about each wine. He was funny, wit, friendly and provided top tier customer service. The menu was so limited with no sides of salad or veg. No appetizers or first course. I really really wanted to love Meritage. I love that most of their produce comes from their own greenhouses or is sourced locally. The ambiance: It was actually very nice inside and I liked that it was so open. However we were seated at a table next to the window and there was a fan that kept blowing on us as it rotated side to side. I had to put my hair up to prevent it from blowing all over the place. Ceviche: Good! Not the best ceviche I've ever had but it was not bad. The seafood tasted fresh which is one of the more important things for me. The wontons were alright, very very messy as flames ended up everywhere. The wontons were also a little oily and left that oil taste in your mouth if you ate it alone. Also there was a small piece of blue plastic lodged in one of the clams :( We let our server know and he offered to have them remake it, but we figured it was alright (crazy take i know). Ratatouille: Was decent, squash was cooked well and couscous went nicely. I personally felt that it could use a little more salt to enhance the tomato flavor, but to each their own. Short Rib: The short rib was very soft. However it was a little dry and the dish itself was a little underwhelming for me. I think I needed something in the dish to add some brightness as everything seemed to weigh the dish down. But again, personal preference because my boyfriend had no problems with it. I love the farm to table concept. Service was quick and the host/servers were very friendly. You can have views of the rolling hills pretty much anywhere you sit. But if you can, try to ask for window seating. Bone marrow was yummy! The ceviche that we ordered was also good but unfortunately the chips it came with were stale. Who doesn't get a charcuterie board with wine? Good variety of meats and cheeses. Hummus was good too. For entrees, the duck leg was dry, the pesto pasta was a bit oily. The presentation of oven roasted chicken made me wish I ordered it although once we tasted it, it was kinda dry. If you do decide to order it, it's a big portion so consider sharing it. Fiancé and I came to try out the food in advance of selecting for our Wedding Rehearsal lunch. Will say the food was spectacular when paired with the recommended wine. We ordered the Cheese Raclette and Fig salad to start and my god the raclette was BOMB!! The melted cheese topped with roasted black garlic, iberico ham, and potatoes on a toasted baguette slice was amazing. But do eat it while it's hot before the cheese hardens. The fig salad wasn't my favorite but that's because I'm not a fan of goat cheese, but my fiancé loved it. For entrees we landed on the Pork Chops and the scallops. OMG the pork chop while a little slimmer than I envisioned was super juicy, moist, and well seasoned. Some may say it's a bit salty by itself but when paired with the blanched Brussels sprout leaves and wine it was just right. The only two critiques was the parsnip purée still had a little chunks of parsnip which I would've expected to be fully blended to a smooth purée; and the amount of thick cut bacon bits was just a tad too much for my taste. My fiancé got the scallops and said they were cooked well, just a hint over done but had that slight bounce on the scallop without being rubbery. The cheese board paired very well with the red wine our server recommended! The slow roasted pork belly was good but not worth the $21 in my opinion. Not pictured: ceviche! We had the most delicious lunch. Chef Michael is the best, the staff is very attentive, and the food was sooo good!!!! I will most definitely come back here. I got the Chardonnay, it was enjoyable and paired well with the pork belly (omg the sauce), smoked pork loin (get it, everything about it was perfect) and I had thee cuuuutest most delicious cannoli ever it was so good! My husband got the muffuletta which was excellent in every way, Chef Michael brought his expertise to each dish and it shows. I'll name the issues below in simple terms; Service is rushed and infrequent , but nice Delivery of the entrees way to soon Food comes out luke warm and dry. Flavors undistinguishable and under seasoned Beware of the ceviche The braised rib had 3 lengths of a root type vegetable...very undercooked! These things are easy to fix with a trained expeditor. But the chef, in my humble opinion, needs a little consulting help. He or she is 50-60% there. Ok and until the quality gets where it needs to be, maybe shoot for a little lower price point.
