We took one of our cars in for an oil change and some tire work. Since then we've had nothing but issues. Here is a list of all the issues we have had. 1. They over charged us for tire rotation and we had to be refunded. 2. They messed up repairs to tire pressure sensors. He had one that was a bit too sensitive. On their advice we had it replaced. A day later the tps light came back on. Somehow after their work another one of the sensors broke and they wanted to charge us to replace it. 3. The car is now leaking oil and when we brought it back in to double check the tires, they didn't notice the oil slick! We can understand one or even two mistakes, but all of these together is just too much. Auto work is not cheap, and you want it done correctly the first time. Don't take your vehicles here. Update, after getting it checked at another shop - the oil leak was most likely caused by a bad filter/incorrect installation. Serious issues with the mechanic who looked at our vehicle. read more

Brought my car into the shop for overheating issues. They claimed it was due to my radiator and recommended I replace temp gauge, radiator cap, hoses and belts. $1700 in repairs and it was still overheating. I brought it back for them to tell me it's a blown head gasket and they don't know where it's leaking from. read more

These guys are the BEST!!! I was calling around to shops in the area to service me company vehicle . I spoke with the Moe about pricing and availability for a complete brake job on my 2016 fort transit medium roof extended . I needed to have all 4 rotors and pads all the way around to be replaced . The main catch to servicing my van was time sensitivity . Every hour the van is down is an hour of lost revenue for my business. Moe assured me that they could get me in at a specific date and time and would need the van for a specific amount of time. After getting the pricing over the phone i decided to give these guys a shot. I dropped the van off at 3 pm the night before my appointment so that they would have it first thing in the morning . I was promised to have it back by noon the next day . at 1030 the next morning i received a call in regards to the calipers on my van. They told me that one of them were sticking and that it should be replaced . They also made me aware that my rear differential fluid was in need of replacement as well. At 60k miles and with a lot of trips to the dealership for service not once did they even recommend these services . I agreed to the additional cost and the assured me that they would still have my van ready at noon. I arrived back at 1145 and the gentleman that was working on my car was taking it for one last test drive to make sure everything sounded and felt right . As i was in the waiting room paying , Moe and his partner we telling me how they were able to get it done on time due to the fact that their technician started working on it the night before. I am truly grateful for this , if the technician and owner hadn't made the choice to start the van repairs early , they would not have been able to get the additional work completed within the allotted time. I will and do recommend these guys !!! I will be back in about 5k more miles for a tune up....Keep up the GREAT work !!! read more

Worthless warranty. Brought car in for $800 full brake job in November 2021. Nine months and 6000 miles later, two brake rotors they installed were warped. They refused to repair the vehicle under warranty, only replacing the defective parts, NOT THE LABOR! So I had to pay another $400+ to have the defective rotors replaced. They clearly bought cheap quality parts that didn't last NINE MONTHS! So if you choose to have your car repaired here, know that you might be paying again soon to replace their low quality parts a second time. read more

They offered to drive me to my Schaumburg apartment that Saturday afternoon since I did not have any means of transportation. Merlin's is one of our go-to auto repair shops in Wheaton. We had suspension related concerns on an older car. Moe was great, he listed out the issues and we choose to replace the rear struts and have been very happy with the improvement to the ride and handling. First I wait for the guy to get off the phone. No problem. I notice the price $10 higher than I saw online for the location on Merlin's website. I mention the rate I saw, and he said that's a coupon. Okay. However, it's NOT really a coupon. There is no coupon to print. No coupon codes, nothing. All it is is a price on the website! Just mentioning that I saw the price should be enough, and if not showing it on my cell phone should. This guy tells me I have to go home and print out the page to get that price. WHAT!! Obviously I'm not coming back. What a horrible employee. There really is nothing but the price shown on the page, it's not actually a coupon at all and there's no need to have it. He could have just printed the page if for some reason he needed a copy for records, but there's no code or anything to enter in a computer. Anyways, I'm off to Oil Zone or Jiffy Lube. read more

Amazing staff and service ! I went in for an oil change. Simple right? But they go above and beyond that. They walked me to my car right before service was done to physically show me what maintenance needs to be done soon and why. Super friendly and not sales pushy! It does make a difference showing why maintenance would be to be done versus just explaining during the transaction. He even brought out the cabin filter to show me how it currently looks. I went in for an oil change on my 2017 Toyota Sienna. Calling and setting the appointment was quick and seamless. Post completion of oil change, Moe pointed out some issues including the struts that were leaking and breaking down. Because of the condition of the struts, the tread on my inner front tires were worn to the run flat metal. All I'm seeing in my head is ...$$$. Fortunately for me, Moe gave me an honest overview and pointed out the root of the problem, that if not addressed, could have made for a bad breakdown. He provided fair and honest quote with no pressure sales. He even recommended I check with the dealer to see if it was covered, as I only had 29k miles on the vehicle. To be safe I did take the car back to the dealer and they confirmed that the front struts were breaking down and would need to be replaced. Unfortunately for me, since it was past the 36 months, Toyota could not help with the cost of repair. After reviewing two other quotes, Merlins came in with the best price. I coordinated with Moe and got my vehicle back next day and get all the work completed. Thanks for being fair, honest and making things easy Moe! Will definitely come back! read more

Horrible service I will never go back. After waiting over an hour and seeing my vehicle sitting in the shop for over 15 minutes with no one touching it the service writer Dan comes out to tell me my vehicle needs fuel lines as they are leaking ( they weren't before I brought it in the young kid with the faux hawk had moved them and they split and are now leaking gas as I just repaired them a week before) So he tells me my blazer is leaking gas and I look in the shop and the same kid is smoking a cigarette in the shop 3 feet from my vehicle leaking gas! What would have happened if he burned the place and all the vehicles in It to the ground! It took them over an hour to do an oil change and had no clue what was wrong with the clunking noise I wanted inspected. Don't waste your time or money here I will never come back and am calling the wheaton fire department to file a complaint read more

I have used Merlin's for years and can not say enough about how much I appreciate the fantastic service they provide. My car is my baby and they take very good care of it. Mo and his crew are honest, trustworthy, fair and knowledgeable. They have gone above and beyond for me on many occasions and for that, I am forever grateful. New owners here and they are great! I dread going into any car repair shop by myself being a young woman. I'm usually bombarded with the employees telling me all kinds of things that are wrong with my car and need to be fixed "immediately". NOT HERE. They guys were very respectful, walked me out to my car while the oil was being changed to show me everything underneath. They explained everything and were not pushy AT ALL. They claim their oil change price includes up to five quarts, any additional oil will be an extra charge. My Honda CR-V manual says my vehicle takes 4.4 quarts, including the oil filter. Well, Merlin charged me an extra $2.50 I don't know where they put that extra 1.6 quarts of oil! read more

Went to get new tie rod and ball joint at noon. Told me they would be done by 4 and didnt happen. Then I told them i would be in to get it in the morning when they open. Right on the door it says 8am-6pm. Waited til about 815, called, no one answered. Will i ever get my car back? Never going here again read more

Out of convenience since this place is around the corner from my office, I decided to try it. I have gone back ever since. Pricing is comparable to similar shops, guys working here aren't creepy like other places and fully explain what is suggested for repairs. My only complaint is that when I drop off my husbands car and instruct them to call me about repairs or when it is done they NEVER do. I provide them with my cell each time... And I am also in the system for my own car but yet they always try to call him! This delays the process because his is unable to answer the phone at work so I end up having to call throughout the day to check up. I definitely don't think this is a place where they will charge you more or are dishonest about services needed so I have no need to go elsewhere. read more

Word to the wise! Stay away from this rip off artist! I went there yesterday for a wheel alignment and was told by Kai (owner, mechanic?) that I needed front ball joints. at a cost of $529.00. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and went to Pep Boys where I was given a repair estimate that was half of what Merlin's wanted. When they got the car on the rack they informed me that my ball joints were fine and I only needed an alignment. Stay away from Merlin they are scumbags! read more

Don't walk away from this place, RUN!!!! I went in for an oil change and to have them check my loud exhaust. Owner/Mgr. would not take the Merlin's coupon for the oil change that I printed directly off of their website?!!! I told them no oil change then, just check the exhaust. After checking the exhaust they quoted me over $650.00 for a repair to a "rusted pipe" as they called it. I told them no thanks, and went to another muffler shop for a 2nd check. The issue was a rusted out flex pipe that they replaced brand new for $80.00. Let's see, Merlin's in Wheaton wanted me to pay over $650.00 for what they described as a "rusted pipe." It would appear that they are running a dishonest operation at best and want to try to take advantage of their customers. Do not take your car to this business! They should be shut down! I live around the corner and came here simply because I did not have time to drive down to Platinum Lube in Danada. Needless to say, I could have been to Danada back and forth three times by now. As others have mentioned, we appreciate the straightforward professionalism of all who work there. No uncomfortable feelings or worries when we or our kids head in for a check-up or a repair. Most recently, we had earned a buy one get one free oil change. We were a bit frustrated having to go online and wait and wait and wait for the coupon to register... and after 10 days or more it never did register as a usable coupon. However, when we took in our other car for an oil change, we explained the online coupon glitch in they happily made it good. No hassles. We loved the service we got from Kai and his group when he owned Merlins on Main Street. The verdict is still out on the new guys; however they have been responsive in a very positve and professional way. We bought a battery 20 months ago with a 2 year replacement warranty. When we had it replaced a week ago, we forgot to check that the only one had a warranty. When we came in with our paid receipt for both batteries, he gave us a refund on the second one. I call that great customer service. My only concern was that he had to go to his supervisor to get us our $119 refund; which delayed it for a few days All's well that ends well. We'll continue to go since we have been going there for the past 15 plus years. read more

I got off work early today so I stopped in to get a quote on two odd noises. One noise was from the brakes, but not a squeal or grind, and the other was from underneath, but didn't sound like a typical muffler noise. I met the new management, Moe and Dennis. They were very welcoming and squeezed me in to have a look. Dennis explained that the brakes were "out of round" and that the resonator had corrosion, causing the two noises. They also found a bearing issue with the driver side front tire. They took me into the shop, showed me everything and gave me the quote. The quote was less than half of what my mechanic said it would probably cost to fix just the muffler noise. I expected to make an appointment for another day, but they offered to do the work right then. Awesome! I read some magazines, then went down the street for a quick bite. When I returned, my car was completed and road-tested by Moe, the owner. Dennis handled the paperwork and I was out the door. It was truly a pleasure driving home in my nice quiet car today. Took my 1966 Chevy II to the Merlin Muffler shop in Lombard about 5 months ago. Had them do a repair on my exhaust. I got a block away and the hood flies up and is ripped off my car. I immediately (after I retrieved the hood from the street) called Merlin and they said come right back. The store manager told me that they would take care of the situation and see about getting reimbursed for the hood. I was put in contact with a district manager named Andrew out of the Wheaton Office. After months of phone calls I was finally told Friday that there was "NOTHING" they would do. Andrew claimed that I should have told them that I had a trick hood. Now I have had this car for over 13 years and been to many car shows. I can't count how many times the hood has been opened and never had it even come loose. This Andrew person had the gall to offer me coupons for my next visit "NOT". Guess who will not be using Merlin again and I hope others feel the same way. Now I have to find and pay for a new hood read more

I left my car at Merlin's saturday at noon.They want me charge for replacing bad bearings at my vehicle $380, this is only for two front wheels.I bring new parts. I negotiate and they drop at $350. They called me saturday after 5 and say that they replaced one side and if I need car I can pay half and come back monday. I say no, because I have other car. Monday was silent no calls from Merlin's, hoping they can finish other side in one hour and 30 minutes(they told me, this is 3 hour job) Tuesday they call me and told that car is ready for pick up. Diferent guy at desk , final bill was $440 I pay and left store. I did not mention that other guy told me to do job for $350. I know if I say anything nothing will be diferent. This place I will newer visit in my life again. read more

Marcello is horrible! Apparently the assistant manager misquoted me the cost for replacing 4 Struts, &AFTER the work was done called &told me it was a HUGE AMOUNT MORE than what they quoted only a few hours earlier. I was SHOCKED &told him to have the old parts put back on immediately but they said they couldn't because the mechanic had cut the bolts &destroyed the old struts &pieces to remove them, claiming it was necessary because the pieces were badly rusted..but not to worry because the replacement parts were "top of the line"... &according to the invoice i was handed only AFTER being asked how i was going to pay for it all, "top of the line" equates to part costs being THREE times that of what they quoted a week prior in writing for 2 struts. When I finally got there &entered the shop thanks to their courtesy shuttle, no one was even at the front desk. I was left standing there while the manager, leaning over a desk in the garage on his elbow with head resting on his fist, just stared at me through the glass wall between the garage and the lobby. Even after making eye contact, he STILL just stood there. Then only after i shugged &gestured to the front desk did he slowly straiten out &walk over &into the office, to greet me with "do you need something?".. which at quarter to 6pm, was my car that was already parked parallel to the building, blocking the entrance door . In the years that ive been a customer at this place, i have NEVER, before THIS, experienced there being no person up front or a person up front seeming like they were completely inconvenienced by having to interact. Then I was asked to pay before being presented the invoice to review. After I ask to first see the invoice, &for some details regarding the price increase, i was only informed that their quote before the service price was incorrect. Then instead of attempting to offer some type of compromise, solution, or EVEN AN APOLOGY - Marcello says, you should have known the price that quoted was wrong.. if two struts cost "A", then why would 4 struts cost "B" -- my response, BECAUSE that is what i was quoted by your office. (DUH!). i don't know the cost of struts. I've never had them replaced. I've NEVER been quoted by this shop before &then expected to pay even 10 CENTS MORE than any quote they've ever given me. They called me and told me the price, i agreed to that price (reluctantly because it was expensive for me in the first place), then called me up later and said the work was all complete BUT the repair cost was more than half the price of my car. They didn't even offer me a less expensive alternative to their "top of the line" pieces.. for my car which is a 2001. &when i was there they didn't even offer to show me the pieces which they alleged were so rusted. I understand that the assistant manager may have misquoted it &that MISTAKES HAPPEN. I actually had high regard for him. He initially seemed forthright about the mistake over the phone and acknowledged responsibility for the mistake. WHAT I COULD NOT believe was that in front of the assistant manager - who which i hope that Merlin's has not made Marcello responsible for coaching/mentoring -Marcello told me that i should have known the price was incorrect in the first place, that i was being difficult. He offered no explanation about the charges on the invoice, mentioned only that on top of the outrageously increased price that there was somehow a 20% discount in it..&then by his lead, the assistant manager in the background - who Marcello was also yelling back and forth with in front of me, and talking over - begins yelling that i am just trying to squash the little guy. i totally had enough of it all &asked for the corporate number. Marcello wrote down some Andrew persons number on a card,passed it across the counter,told me to call that. i don't call numbers i don't know. i looked up the corporate number on my phone, called, &left a vm. Marcello apparently called "Andrew" &after back &forth of him talking on the phone he tells me to just pay what was quoted. I was &am SO upset - after all that it was NOT even so much about being expected to pay way more than i budgeted for or the mistake misquote - it was the TERRIBLE way i was treated &blamed by Marcello. the bigger problem i have now, is feeling uncomfortable to take my 2001 car back to the mechanics there, who have always done good work for quite some time now, because i don't want to be treated horribly by their new manager. they didn't even do an complete inspection. Marcello told me to sign off that i waived that. i NEVER agreed to have them not do an inspection but a that point i just signed the paper to get out of there. it was awful. Marcello may be great at ringing people up &saying have a nice day, I'm sure they can hire a16 yr old to do the same. That place needs a competent manager.
