Good choice for a meal in Lone Pine We had dinner here last week and were surprised with the Asian (Chinese) food at the Merry Go Round. While the decor and ambience is unusual, the smell and dishes are distinctly Asian. The main dishes we had, Imperial Shrimp and Orange Chicken were quite good. Generous quantities, they also included some bok choy, broccoli, and assorted Asian veggies like dark fungus, bamboo shoots, and baby corn. In addition, the main protein was generous, well prepared, and cooked quite nicely. We'd come back, maybe skip the appetizers, and settle on one or two main dishes to enjoy. Staying in the area for two days and ate here two nights. I must say those two meals were as Charles Dickens says, "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" Thursday night regular menu. Wow, great Chinese and Schezuan food. Great quantity and favorable. Great service, friendly etc. We had two of the specials which was a combo meal of appetizer, main course etc... outstanding. Now, the downside.. So. American night which evidently is Tuesday and Wednesday night (my first meal)... isn't the ticket.... I had the pasta bolognese meal and the whole deal was like 18 dollars and substandard at best. Other patrons were feeling the same way. So. Until it changes I would recommend the restaurant only on the regular menu days. Then, it's awesome. read more

I wanted to give this restaurant a zero or at least a one. But I have to be honest. The food is pretty good. That's why I gave them a generous two stars. What really pissed me off was their online prices versus the in restaurant prices and then the attitude of the young lady who served me. I ordered using the online menu. I expected a bill of around $38. When I got to the restaurant it was about $55. That's about a 30% increase. I asked how we got to that total and after a brief conversation I was told that they had raised their prices. The obvious question was why wasn't the price increase reflected on their webpage? The answer? We have no control over that. Seriously? Then fire the people who manage your site. The final straw was getting back to our RV and finding that the Sweet and Sour chicken that we ordered had no sauce. My wife called them and was pretty much told to pound sand. Come and get the sauce or too bad for you. We pass through Lone Pine several times a year. When Seasons isn't open (GREAT restaurant, by the way) we have been eating at The Merry Go Round. No more. I seriously dislike being price gouged. That's exactly what happened here. read more

Authentic chinese food in the middle of no where. While we are not experts but anyone can see this is not panda express! I wanted the noodles because they looked so good but was overruled by my hubby that did all the driving. Orange chicken was really good, not sure if the egg rolls were homemade but they were good, and the hunan chicken hit the spot. The only thing that would prevent a 5 star is that it was overly spicy. I asked for no chilis in the orange chicken and pulled out 8 of them. Just too heavy on chilis, back off a bit. Can always be added on- can't be removed once added. Small place make reservation. This place is quite a little gem. With a really really really good authentic Chinese food in a cute unique environment of an old merry-go-round space. Tiny. Family owned with great personal service. The people there are so sweet. And the food comes out very quickly as well. When are they open? Are they ever actually open? I drive by twice a year and have stopped by 4 or 5 times and they're never open. I checked the hours the other day and walked down the street from the motel and stood in front with other people for about 15-20 minutes. From what we heard around town this place has changed ownership's a few times. Anyways, we dined here last Saturday night, weekend of the film festival. They were busy! So busy it seemed the staff was a bit caught off guard and flustered. You can see they were trying their best though. We walked in and took the only table that was left outside, one apparently they don't use too often because it was covered with extra table cloths that they had to remove when we sat down. They were super busy so service was a little slow, but we were in no rush, so it wasn't a big deal. We ordered the orange peel chicken and asked to add broccoli and also a fat noodle dish. I'm pretty sure this is the only spot to get Chinese American food in Lone Pine. It's a very fascinating place; everything from the decor to the name. The restaurant has a circular set up with tables and chairs, which I guess is supposed to be the merry go round? It's a very memorable place because I just have so many lingering questions about it. The prices here are pretty steep, but offer larger portion sizes. Most entree items are around $12 to $13. The Kung Pao Chicken is really good here. I order the lemon chicken.. not to take away from its crispy flavor.. but slap my ass when tha orange chicken got laid out in front of me to a fellow comrade.. Solid Chinese food in Lone Pine. We found this place thanks to Yelp, and were happy with the results. For example, we ordered the pan fried chicken dumplings. They were good and they give you about a dozen! They also give you the option of steamed or fried. We also had the Mongolian Beef and Moo Shoo Pork. The pork was not bad, but the Beef was really good. Our 6 year old daughter got the noodles but didn't like them too much. But she happily ate about 6 of the chicken dumplings. Who would have thought that the best restaurant in Lone Pine was a Canto joint in a Merry-go-round venue? Ha ha All joking aside, this place kicks out good Chinese American cuisine with a little bit of innovation at moderate costs. The highlight was the ma po tofu which the chef added black beans for a succulent interpretation of a classic. We had a vegan in our party of 6 and she appreciated the numerous options. If you are looking for more than a burger, sandwich, salad or pizza in Lone Pine after 22 miles of butt whomping on Whitney, this is your place. The owners are super nice. We will be back for sure. I normally am suspicious of such a broad, encompassing menu, but this place had come recommended and I'm so glad it was! We sat out on the deck with an incredible view of the eastern Sierra mountains and ordered from the Chinese menu. The Pan fried noodles with the whole assortment of veggies is something I'll think about for a long time. Delicious!
