My favorite and most visited breakfast spot in Santa Barbara. I love it because no matter how busy the weekend is I know that my party of two will be seated promptly as they run a tight operation. What's even better is the service and the breakfast fare. I love going in for the Chicken Friend steak when I'm real hungry or enjoying a standard egg and sausage breakfast as well when not so ravenous. Wanted a nice Christmas Eve breakfast. However, I Just left the restaurant because I was seated for 45 minutes waiting for my order to be taken. We were seated on the patio. Our server, was taking care of a table who arrived about 10 minutes after us. She basically ignored us to take care of them. She also would stare at us every time she helped the table after us and then proceed to walk away. We even asked her are you our server, and she walked away. Today I ordered the Chicken Tostada. Used to always get that and it was delicious!! Not today. Chicken was ice cold!! All lettuce and very little beans. Will never order again. I've eaten here several times in the past and found it just fine, but I wanted to check out their brunch menu to decide if we wanted to meet a friend there on the weekend, and when I click on either the link to the menu or the link to Mesa Cafe, I get a warning from Google advising me not to proceed, that its a security risk. Honestly delicious. They give out huge portions and the food came out fast. We got an omelette, chilaquiles and huevos rancheros and it was sooo delicious. Huevos rancheros we're in the top 3 I've ever had in my life. The tortilla had some yummy cheese inside it and it also came with a fluffy blueberry muffin and hash browns. The reason I give 4 stars is because the service was bad and I found a small hair in my butter at the end of my meal. Our waitress didn't check in on us and so she didn't refill our waters once and she forgot about the coffee creamer until the coffee was cold. After being seated we waited and waited. After having ample time to look over a menu we still had no server come to help us. When we looked around there were several servers standing around chatting. The restaurant was NOT busy. We asked if we had a server and They just looked at us and kept taking. I went and asked what looked like a floor manager if we could please get some service. He pointed to some people and told them to help us. I went and sat down and they still did not come over. We just didn't understand what the heck was happening so we got up and left. I have been to this place four or five times, and I can tell you that I have never once been disappointed. The food and the service are always excellent. The restaurant itself is huge with outdoor seating, too. There is a full bar, but I don't think the restaurant is open past 3:00. A couple of my favs are their Huevos Rancheros and their breakfasts in general. Also, their cheeseburger is sooo good for me, a person who usually doesn't order burgers. We went here for brunch on Sunday morning. There was a table ready to seat us but we had to wait about 15 minutes anyways for some reason. At that point the service was on the slow side and our server wasn't writing anything down for a party of 6 which resulted in many errors and missed items. The food was average, not great but not bad. Forgot drinks, extra drinks (explained later) forgotten side orders and the service was to slow to really do anything about the problems. At the end we finally got our check to look over it and see we were rang up for 6 mimosas. Back to my comment about errors being made, we ordered three mimosas they brought out four and we said it was fine and kept the fourth (half expecting to not be charged for their mistake, especially considering it was slow and they forgot multiple things, but regardless we were prepared to pay for it if need be). We explained the mistake to our server and he didn't seem to understand and argued with us about it. We asked him to remove at least the two extra mimosas that weren't ever even brought to the table and preferably the mistake given the circumstances bringing it to 3 mimosas on the bill. He came back having charged the card only having removed one mimosa. So we were charged for five mimosas - 3 were ordered, four were brought to the table, charged for five? This was ridiculous. We couldn't figure out what the deal was but our thought was that it was either put on our tab thinking we wouldn't notice and subtracted off a cash paying table to be pocketed by the server? We subtracted the extra two mimosas out of the tip and did the math for him and the manager on the receipt. It's not hard to do the right thing, hopefully someone figured this out. read more

Mesa Cafe can be found in a plaza-like building, so the atmosphere itself isn't as cool as it would be if you were right by the water. No biggie- we were seated right away and our drink orders were also quickly taken. My OJ and water came out, along with everyone else's waters. Some of our additional drinks; however, were missed and brought after a second reminder. I don't think it's too big of a deal.... but we definitely had to flag down our server a few times to either correct orders or bring out forgotten items (like a fruit substitute). I ordered the corned beef hash- really awesome, shredded meat. It wasn't the canned-like texture, but came out shredded as if it were going into a taco- very delicious. It wasn't too salty or anything. My scrambled eggs came out hot and my toast came in great time. The others in my party all had something off or missing from their order, which was strange. So Santa Barbara is our favorite vacation spot. We tried to get into a restaurant on State Street for breakfast and it had an hour and a half wait. So we wanted to pick a local place that wasn't swamped. And found the Mesa Café. What a delight. It was very clean. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Every special request was honored! The blueberry muffin was outstanding! The eggs Benedict was delicious although I thought it was a little expensive for the side of extra hollandaise sauce but oh well. The fruit was a bit under ripe but that's not anything they can necessarily control. My only constructive critique would be that they should serve the breakfast on hot plates. Because eating outdoors it got cold very fast because the plate was also cold! Overall it was awesome! I would absolutely go again. Very dog friendly LOL. Clearly a popular place with the locals! Mesa café is a go to for me and my workers we have lunch there every other week at least or when we are on the Mesa we make it a point to have lunch at the Mesa café. The food is good, portions are healthy, the staff is friendly and welcoming. The inside area is very beach friendly and clean. They also allow dogs on the patio which is a bonus. The manager and a few of the staff members go out of their way to greet everyone it's like a family run business.. The hot turkey dinner is my favorite but you can't really go wrong with whatever you order, I would recommend for breakfast to order the green Chilaquiles. I never really go to the bar but they do have a nice long bar with TVs all around if anybody is a football or sports fan it's a good spot to relax watch your sport and have drinks and a meal. read more

Met a friend here to catch up after years of not seeing her. Had no idea that this cute cafe was on the Mesa, which is funny given the name. It looked "popping" so I was worried about the wait, but table for two got in within 3 minutes so that was great. You can use your smart phone camera to scan into the menu so that no one has to worry about touching the menus. I do wonder tho if there are paper menus available for people who don't have a smart phone? We ordered coffee which didn't get to us until after our food was already there and we had to ask again to have our coffee. But after that, one of the staff members ensured our mug was never empty. My friend ordered the Benedict and I ordered an omelet. Forgot to take pictures because we were so hungry. But everything was served quickly and perfectly prepared. Huge servings so come hungry! I personally love the location of the Mesa cafe because it's one of the few places up on the Mesa that still has that originally community comfort going for it in the Mesa however the parking lot does get crowded in the morning/brunch time. The food is great, extensive menu and definitely a clean establishment which I love. Dog friendly with a great patio selection to eat and enjoy outside. My favorite item to order is the crispy French toast on the crispy chicken with feta simple but yummy. Mesa cafe has the bar in the same room as the dining/brunch area and you can always catch the latest sports playing I know my brother made it a ritual to come here with his co workers and he's really laid back so it's definitely chill approved. If you're familiar with Cody's in Goleta (off Fairview which I recommend 100%) you'll notice the similarities in menu since they're co owned, however i must say the Cody's takes the stars for better food, and an even more family knit environment and attentive staff. read more

The dinner menu isn't that large, but it works and they have reasonable kids menu items. For dinner, the clientele was very diverse. All walks of life except tourists. I ordered a blue cheese burger which came with a salad and fries. It was good and the salad was very generous in size. The BEST item was the Pot Roast. This was delicious and recommended. Service was poor, but the manager walked by and noticed empty drinks and empty plates. He filled in the service gaps nicely. Look, this is Santa Barbara. This place is great a casual brunch spot with their huge patio and dinning space. They are able to accommodate alot of people, have large portions and they have a full bar here! I've heard about Mesa Cafe from all of my friends and finally last Sunday I came here to have brunch with my boyfriend. When we arrived it was already noon but they told us they were still serving breakfast so we waited for a table. It didn't take long and once we were seated we had the chance to order our drinks right away. I got a lemonade and he got a fresh squeezed orange juice. We took the chance to look at the menu and realized how big it actually was! This place has everything you could even ever crave. They have pasta, breakfast, burgers and more! We ended up sticking with our original plan and just ordered breakfast since that's what my friends were raving about. We got a pancake to share for the table. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and he got the pasilla scramble! They all came out at the same time and we didn't have to wait too long. Everything was really good. I ordered a California eggs Benedict. It was cold and had one tiny slice of tomato. The avocado was maybe a quarter of a small avocado and it was sliced on the side with a tiny amount of hollandaise. Side of hash town accompanied my breakfast. To the cook: "I recommend a thick slice of tomato maybe even two and avocado slices on English muffin, poached egg next and a generous amount of hollandaise sauce." Beautiful spot for breakfast - lots of seating but also lots of patrons. I arrived at Mesa Cafe on the greatest of holidays the first Sunday of football season. It was a pleasant surprise to see all the local games were on. The estimated wait time for an indoor seat was about 10 minutes according to the hostess but we were seated very quickly (love that!). The outdoor area is probably nicer but it happened to be "cold" that morning. Corned Beef Hash was not like anything I've had before. A little less fatty and a lot drier than what I have had in the past. Despite this texture it. Our Airbnb host recommended Mesa Cafe to us for brunch and we enjoyed it very much! There's plenty of outdoor seating on the patio and it looked like there was a lot of seating inside the restaurant as well. We sat outside because we had our golden retriever with us and it's nice and dog-friendly here. Almost everyone else sitting outside on the patio had a pup with them as well. We ordered an omelet and a scramble. The breakfast was really tasty and filling, a big portion. I ordered an egg white scramble with basil and tomatoes and mushrooms with a side of fresh fruit and cornbread. He had a omelet with bacon and turkey and avocado with a side of sourdough bread and potatoes. Lots of potatoes on that plate which makes my husband happy.
