On a recent Friday night, we decided to venture to an Ethiopian restaurant we hadn't yet tried. After some debate, Mesob was the winner. Housed in a former Mexican restaurant (I know that because there's still some old signage hanging around outside), the layout is large and open. A big bar area sits at the far end flanked by two TV's, with a third TV in the dining area. The table sets are all regular tables and chairs but one lone traditional mesob surrounded by wicker chairs sits in the corner. It was a quiet Friday night. As expected, one server was taking care of everyone. We had a hard time communicating with her, though she was very nice. She couldn't understand which kind of wine I wanted, even though I pointed to it on the menu. I think they were out of the chardonnay I chose because I was presented with two generous wine samples, a red and a white, to try and decide which one I wanted. Free wine is always alright with me! I didn't notice traditional honey wine on the menu. We ordered a veggie combo to share, zilzil tibs for me, and doro wot for Mr. P. The zilzil tibs was overcooked. I usually don't eat meat that charred but it was actually edible and, obviously, I wasn't going to send it back and wait around for a replacement. Otherwise, everything else was quite tasty. Our kind server made sure we had plenty of water, injera, and napkins. Strangely enough, spaghetti and meatballs is on the menu. So, I guess this is the place you can bring your friend who doesn't really like Ethiopian food. Plenty of parking is available in the lot across the street behind Ace Hardware. read more

As an Ethiopian, I know good habesha food when I taste it. And oh wow, did I see paradise at Mesob. The service is exceptional. Our server was very helpful Ethiopian woman. And just waiting to blow your mind with the dish they're about to drop on your table. They must know it's good, because the way they smile when they bring that large plate made to share on your table, like "I know this plate will be clean in ten minutes" kinda smile. I also had the to chance to meet the restaurant owner Letish; what a humble sweet lady! We devoured every last bit of the amazing dish. It was yammmmmmy. It was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning. Flavorful; the best shiro wot(chick peas)and gomen(spinach)I've ever had. Amazing!!!! Everything on the plate is simply delicious! Very vegetarian and vegan friendly. I am not a yelper, I actually created yelp account just to comment on this restaurant. And if you are a coffee drinker the Ethiopian coffee they serve, which in my opinion is a must! Was outstanding. I highly recommend going there. What a gem. We had family in town who had never had Ethiopian food. We have a go-to spot where we usually go for Ethiopian and have never ventured beyond it. They were full and my wife had heard of Mesob so we decided to give it a try. The food was amazing. The service was delightful - out waitress charming and knowledgeable. My in-laws thoroughly enjoyed their first tastes of Ethiopian food. We fed the whole crew for a fraction of what we might have paid at some other restaurants we frequent. We love Mesob! Found this Ethiopian eatery on recommendation of my RTD bus driver, who is from Ethiopia. Off Colfax, just west of Quebec. Met the owner, very friendly and accommodating. Went 100% vegetarian and the boss lady/chef added a hard boiled egg per my request. Loved the array of authentic food and the salad in the middle was very special. Seems to be a gathering spot for Ethiopian families, with pool table in the back of the restaurant where they play without cues. They have a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights with dancing but alas it's after 10P and away past bedtime! This is a terrific find and will go back soon! read more

Went on a Saturday evening as a group of 8. We were the only ones there. The server could not understand our order and kept mixing up when we asked her to confirm it before she gave it to the kitchen. My friend has dietary restrictions and does not eat Beef. We repeatedly told our server only chicken and lamb but "NO BEEF". As we had anticipated she still got BEEF for my friend. When we told her that we had asked for chicken and lamb and no beef; she rudely told you kept saying Beef! And further added that you can eat the chicken from the plate( it was a meal combo that has different curries on injera) and walked away. We thought it could be a miscommunication so we asked her if she's going to replace my friends order and the server replied " You will have to pay for it." I have never ever experienced such poor customer service. One you bring something that you were repeatedly asked not to and then instead of correcting the mistake, you rudely ask the customer to eat that or pay again for getting what they ordered!!! Worst experience and the food was not good either. I have eaten at a lot of Ethiopian restaurants and know how food tastes. Ethiopian food is a favorite for us so we eat it every couple of months (and drive 40 minutes from the "burbs" to find the best.) We found the best at Mesob! Always welcoming and friendly - rarely a wait. The food is delicious and I'm always full when we're finished. The drinks can be a bit unpredictable; sometimes they have honey wine (not on the menu) and sometimes they don't. The wine selection varies; I get the sense they don't have a large stock on hand consistently but I always have nice options. If you want a regular go-to, I highly recommend Mesob. If you are in town for a visit, or exploring Ethiopian food for the first time, I recommend Mesob. The staff is super helpful in making recommendations and honest about favorites on their menu. Great food. Slow to come out, but we've been to enough Ethiopian places to expect this. LOL The short ribs were a great treat as I've not seen them anywhere else, and I really enjoyed them. We had ordered the meat combination too, but they brought out the vegetable combination by mistake. They corrected it without any additional charge and we actually really enjoyed the veggie combo while we waited! The collard green dish was surprisingly amazing! The one veggie dish we had ordered and were looking forward to with the cabbage was the one thing that was actually kind of disappointing. It was cooked really well it just didn't have as much flavor as we are used to. However the meat dishes when we got them we're much spicier than we expected! read more

My husband and I wanted something different last night and enjoyed Ethiopian food a few years ago when we were in Washington DC. Mesob did not disappoint. We sat at the bar and were waited in by the owners daughter who was delightful and very helpful. We ordered the meat trio and the dry short ribs and ate every last bite. The meats were beautifully spiced and somehow we found a way to eat the entire two rolls of spongy bread. We tried the house-made honey wine which was delicious and enjoyed a wonderfully smooth cup of Ethiopian coffee! We will definitely be back! read more

I have never been to a restaurant and not tipped in my life but this place did it for me. If I could give zero stars I would. Let's start off with the "Tej" tasted awful and not fermented long enough. Service was pretty laggy as well, server paid minimal attention to our table, food took over an hour to get to the table and once it did come out it was cold? Also when I asked for the traditional cheese that goes they didn't have it server said "Our fridge broke down earlier that day so we had to throw it out". Food was subpar in taste but tasted as though the meat was old or sitting out for a while, portions were skimpy. Barely touched the "kitfo" as that dish was the worst out of all. Shared my concerns with the server who relayed the message to the owner/cook who refused to take the dish off of the bill. When I explained my concerns she was rude and wouldn't take my experience seriously, arguing that she knows her meat is fresh but I found it odd because the server said the fridge was broken which coincides with my claims. Nevertheless, never going back here, my friend was disappointed and I was embarrassed for bringing her here. read more

Food was excellent however I'll never go back. I ordered a red stripe beer that was completely flat. I took a sip and gave it back. I've been drinking red stripe for 20 years so I know what I'm talking about. They refused to refund me. The owner stated it was my fault and that I was liable to pay for flat beer. Wonderful staff and warm atmosphere. We LOVED this restaurant. When I moved back to Colorado, I was very much missing Ethiopian food and we had tried another restaurant, Queen of Sheba, and she acted the entire time like she actually WAS the Queen of Sheba. It was a terrible experience, but I'm so happy it forced us to another restaurant. Mesob had amazing food, and unfortunately I didn't remember to ask the waitress for her name, but she was super sweet and accommodating. Very attentive and good service. The food was of course delicious and the honey wine is always a must have. Queen of Sheba was also very cramped and noisy and had poor atmosphere, but Mesob was very open and not too noisy, and just had a more special vibe to it. This is the best Ethiopian restaurant I have been to in Denver, hands down, and I have been to a lot. The flavors are bold and authentic, and the service is good too. I recommend the meat and veggie combo. Sooo delicious and perfect for two! My only critique is the jalapeño slice they put in the salad...very random and unnecessary.
