Definitely A-OK! Was pleased with everything I had here. The service was quite good as well. The nachos and other appetizers are pretty good sized, so you if you're not overly hungry you could definitely make a meal of them. All the dishes are nicely presented and not sloppy. I am so disappointed -- we decided to go for Sunday brunch. They advertise opening at 11am on Sunday both online and on their menu. We arrived to a closed door. One of the staff came to the door and said they were closed for another 40 minutes or so. It was 11:10am and. When I said it says you open at 11 online and in their menu, I got a shrug of the shoulder and a "I can't help that" but you can if its on your menu. I have always been an advocate for this restaurant however I'm so turned off by the attitude and customer service. A simple "I know I'm sorry we are running behind today, I apologize" would have sufficed. Whatever happened to positive customer relations? I won't be so quick to return here next time! read more

This is the local spot my husband and I most frequent. It's definitely Mexican, and operated by people who are either Mexican or understand the Mexican culture quite well. WIth that written, it's not Chilango, it's most definitely rural Mexican with a traditional menu, plated with some creative flair. It's solid Mexican food with a taste of sophistication. There's even some Tex-Mex (Sizzling fajitas). It's a small space, but the configuration is done very well, along with some of the decor coloring. The waitstaff are incredibly kind and skilled. My only criticism is the art on the walls, it's awful. I would suggest finding photographs of the local town this restaurant uses as inspiration to increase the visual excitement of the establishment. Love this place. The food is fresh and delicious. The drinks are amazing and everything is reasonably priced. Great for a happy hour meet up with the girls. Only reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the wait staff only spoke Spanish to our table and I was left asking my friends to translate for me. Also there was one waitress who was completely clueless on how to do her job. We asked for a round of tequila shots (the same ones that comes with the meal) and she looked like we had asked her to calculate the distant between the sun and Earth. She ultimately went to another waiter for help and he still have to retake our order from us. But despite all that I would definitely recommend this place. Def will be going back. read more

This place was nothing special. Typical Mexican food. I had gotten the chicken enchiladas. The tortillas were soggy underneath the large amounts rojo sauce. Now before you say "well duh it's smothered in a liquid" parts of my enchilada were not in sauce and they seemed soggy. The rice and beans were eh. My husband got fajitas and the ratio of meat to tortillas was off. They only gave him 3. I'm sure he could have asked for more. The one thing that I really didn't like and is the reason I gave it 2 stars was the prep area for chips and salsa and guac. It's right by the door!! The guac bowl was NOT cleaned out after the server made two different batches of guac for different tables. He didn't wear any gloves while cutting the avocado. And the chips are just in a bin (getting stale) covered by a cloth napkin. When he was finished making guac both times he just covered the dirty bowl and utensils and left them in the cart. If you know anything about avocados they turn brown even the little left over remnants in the bowl once exposed to air. So yes that's what was sitting in both those customers guacs. Leftover brown avocado. The salsa is in a large container on this cart no cover, just a napkin over it. Otherwise the food was eh. Oh yes a heads up. No refills on drinks. The food here is great! I've tried their calamari quesadilla (sorry no pic) & steak with rice and beans and everything was so delicious. They make their guacamole right in front of you and it looks so good and fresh (I didn't try it because I had just had guac at home but next time I go I will). The only downside is portions are small and prices on the steep side. This is a nice "date night" or lunch meeting spot. I recommend and will go back! read more

I hate when service at a restaurant is what ruins the business. Every time I order from this place they get it wrong. I've given it multiple chances because the quality of food is delicious when they get it right, which is so infrequently. Tonight I was charged 20 dollars (plus 5 for tip) for 1 can of soda and the tinniest "dinner burrito" they've ever served me (which if I can't post with this review I will add on their photo slide show). It is dishonest to try and tell me it's because I requested no beans that the burrito was made smaller. I have ordered this same item enough times to know for a fact I've just been swindled out of my money. The owner didn't even try to make things right just kept giving me excuses. Sorry, but I'm done giving this place chances. Time to be replaced by a place with not only good food, but good customer service and honest management. read more

This place is in the Hall of Shame of Riverdale, but to me it seems commensurate with the rest of the restaurants on Johnson Avenue or in that area. The food has a decent taste to it, it's just a little pricey for what and where it is. OK, they could have put a little more effort into actually melting the cheese on their items that come with that. Service was neutral; neither great nor horrible. If I were in the mood for Mexican food in the near future, I'd probably head to Inwood and take some chances finding something there rather than go here again. If you really need a place to sit down with a few people, it is clean and the flavor is fine. . But as far as having become a punchline among Riverdalians...I think they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Metate is not that bad. read more

I gave it three stars because the food was just okay. I'm trying this vegetarian thing again so I ordered veggie enchiladas and my bf his usual chicken quesadilla (Napoleon Dynamite voice). There was a live mariachi band which I did enjoy. The margaritas were so good. My boyfriend and I drank two and we almost wanted to cab it home! I kid you not !! :) Strong and yummy! I came to this restaurant because my friend lives in Riverdale. I ate the fajitas and it was really good. The meat was well seasoned and the amount of food was good as well. I had margaritas and they had the right amount of liquor. The service was really good. I went back again to celebrate my sisters birthday and my family also enjoyed it. I liked the good food and great service. When I went the second time I had sangria which I did not enjoy. We also ordered the guacamole which was very good. read more

Great Mexican food. I have eaten at this place three times and order from here every so often. You can't go wrong with the tacos or fajitas. For lunch, the tortas (sandwiches) are absolutely delicious and come smothered in beans, cotija cheese, avocado, a meat of your choice and a whole other selection of toppings. Fried calamari is pretty stellar- not too greasy and light on the breading. Great guacamole. The black bean soup is probably my favorite thing on the menu. Delivery is speedy. My only complaint is that their salsa has been inconsistent. Sometimes it is fresh and light, and other times it tastes and look like it came out of a can. Love this restaurant! Been here twice and had great service each time. The service is pretty fast since it's a small restaurant and they have a lot of waiters. They give one order of chips for free and then charge for any additional chips you want. Wish the chips were unlimited because they are delicious and don't last long when you are in a group. I have had beef tacos and chicken tacos from here and they're delicious. Average cost but they give three tacos that are filled to the top. Drinks are also moderately priced but really good. Only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is because our waiter took a while to bring the check after we ate and we were one of 2 tables in the restaurant. Also because I want unlimited chips. We went at 1:30pm for a late lunch and we got guac while we waited for our fourth person to arrive. They were friendly and didn't pressure us to order until she came to the restaurant. Fajitas! Must get fajitas. I love tex mex - and you can't go wrong with fajitas - my friends got steak and chicken and i got chicken. It was seasoned perfectly. The Chips and salsa were great but the area has a great variety of food options and being that this is my first time here, i would most likely say the options around should be explored first. The tostados are definitely overpriced as are many options on the menu but the quality satisfied me enough for dinner i'll give them that. I was highly disappointed because I was looking for a more authentic meal with more spices/heat that you would traditionally get with Mexican/Tex-Mex. After reading a few reviews, I was expecting very bland food but it was good. Not the best Mexican I've had but still pretty good. A decent option for Mexican food in Riverdale. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The restaurant was pretty busy for a Monday night. My sister and I shared the Enchiladas suizas and the soft shell tacos (beef, chicken & pork sausage) The beef & sausage were very well seasoned. The sauce on the enchiladas was very good. Food is decent. However, the service is beyond slow. This is the second time in less than 3 weeks we waited over 20 minutes for our meals. Both times when we arrived the bar area had people but there were seats at the bar and tables available. Both times the restaurant area WAS NOT BUSY. This time we walked in and there was only 1 table of 4 seated and they were done eating. The minute we were done with the chips and salsa the basket was removed. If you have to wait 20 minutes for your food and the restaurant is not busy the waitress could at least ask you if you want more chips and salsa. We ordered 2 drinks from the bar and waited 15 minutes for the drinks. We had to ask the waitress where the drinks were. If the waitress has time to check her cellphone, she certainly have time to ask the customers if the want anything while they are waiting. read more

Very disappointed about Metate tonight. Sh*tstorm from the word "Go". I came in from out of town to eat here specifically and now I am home with a bad stomach. First, the Sopa de tortilla soup was more like tomato puree.....thick, no taste, no chicken, a big clump of shredded cheese. Big bummer. Followed up by the shrimp enchiladas...as we were sitting outside, and did not have silverware, the enchiladas were cold before I received a fork. Supposed to be served with rice and beans, instead there was a pile of corn. Eh. Not what Latinas eat with their enchiladas. They were kind enough to bring me some rice and beans, but that too was cold. Wanted to extend our time together, so we ordered dessert - flan. The flan had the consistency of a flour cake.....dry and without the flan texture that makes it flan. The waiter was SUPER SWEET, but wasn't familiar with the menu, didn't know what they had/were out of, and gave us dirty soup spoons and no forks.....also told us that there was a new chef... Only posting this review so that they get back to the quality they once had....yes, I spoke with the manager....and don't want people wasting their money in the meantime. read more

I understand that it was Cinco de Mayo, but to give you an estimated time of delivery of 30-45 minutes and to show up 2+ hours later is ridiculous. On top of that they didn't have beef for my nachos and called me an hour after I placed my order to offer me chicken instead. The nachos were horrible. The chips were supper soggy, barely had any beans and the chicken was dry. The nachos were literally soggy chips, dry chicken, and cheese. The tacos were ok (the only reason they even got 2 stars), but the burrito was so bland, not even the sauces made it worth eating. read more
