We recently moved to Fruit Cove and hungry one afternoon while unpacking boxes, we just wanted something home style without all the frills and price. Metro Diner has since become a regular goto place for fast and efficient service and food. We don't know the full menu yet. Over the past visits we have tried the teriyaki salmon, meatloaf, ribs, fish and chips and chicken pot pie. All of these were superb. Also we usually have two eggs, over easy for me and well fried for her with an entree or sometimes a bowl of oatmeal with various fixing. A full line of pancakes and waffles as well and really, my challenge is to insist on holding back the usual pile of pancakes as I am to old to carry all of it away! If you are retired military, be sure to flash your id for a discount - yeah, it is that kind of place. Family and community values are clear from the decor and ambiance. Finally, the price. Had I taken a minute to read the Reviews, I would have chosen a different Restaurant. Fish & Chips: fish was grey & fishy tasting , certainly not the Cod they claim. Cheese grits were still hard, the coleslaw was too hard. A very disappointing experience. Dinner ended up in the trash. read more

Terrific little spot with a mix of traditional breakfast food plus excellent southern and TexMex options. This is the epitome of diner food done well with generous portions. We had a 5 person party and waited ~10 min for a table. Not bad at all. We were seated outdoors facing the river, which was lovely. Service was quick and attentive without being overbearing. Everyone in our party loved their food. My husband had outstanding biscuits and gravy. He is picky about biscuits, and these were done right. He was delighted! This is my fourth time eating here, with visits years apart. Friend from SC came to visit and we had an earlier breakfast so that they could start home mid-morning. I arrived first and was warmly welcomed by the Hostess and asked if I wanted to wait inside for my friends. I did! I then received hot water for tea and a large OJ to get started. My friends arrived and we ordered from the wide variety of breakfast entries and sides. I got my favorite "San Francisco Eggs Benedict," one friend got an Avocado Toast Breakfast Sandwich, and the other got a Belgian Waffle. Everything was tasty and a very nice-sized serving. Our waitperson, Barbie, was friendly, attentive and efficient. She also brought a box out with ingredients of the Hollandaise Sauce so I could ascertain for myself that there was nothing onion in it (allergy). That was so nice!! This is a tiny diner from outside, but inside has quite a bit of room. It is in with Hurricanes and Fresh Market just before or after the bridge (depending on which way you are traveling) Most of the time when we walk in we are told to sit where ever we want. Once on a weekend they made us sit in the back corner and it was freezing, I will request another seat should they sit us there again. I usually order the same thing : Western omelet, sub American for the cheddar and no salsa. They have fresh fruit you can get instead of potatoes which is good. I had their avocado toast once too and it was delicious. My husband changes his food up and his has always been good. They have lunch and dinner too, but we have only been for breakfast. Really good food, great prices, and decent service. We have been disappointed by many restaurants in the area, but not Metro Diner. My chicken philly cheesesteak looked super bland when it was brought out, but it was surprisingly far from bland. I highly recommend it as well as breakfast for dinner. While I have tried other restaurants version of Chicken and Waffles, nothing comes close to the taste of Metro Diner's. Simply, consistently delicious. And while I have tried other items on their menu, I just find myself going back to the Chicken and Waffles every time I come here. I think it's because of the comfort taste of that chicken. And C'mon now, who can ever turn down some waffles? Not this guy. This location in particular is where I frequent the most. Ok it's our third time in Less than a month, the owner stated the new flavor of pancake was maple bacon so we had to stop back by.. The sweet savory and bit of crunch to the pancake ,made them in a difficult tie for last months carrot cake one. I haven't been to Metro Dinner in a long time and I have been craving their chicken and waffles. Due to the Labor Day rush, I thought I'd get take out from the Mandarin/Julington creek location. Kayla got my order over the phone and she was very polite and attentive. She was clearly very busy but still smiled when I arrived and she offered me some tea as I was waiting. The raspberry iced tea was as great as I remembered. It took about 20-25 minutes to get my food but it was on the morning rush on a holiday so it is understandable. Everything was great. We got the chicken and waffles, the bacon avocado scramble bowl (hollandaise on the side), and the bissel breakfast. My only concern was the cheese grits which were not creamy at all- they were more like a thick paste. Other than that we had a very good experience, especially considering that it was Labor Day and around 10-11 am on the morning rush. read more

We are regulars at this metro and can confirm consistently perfect food, service, and great atmosphere. Wait times are reasonable and staff have always been pleasant. We live close by and often get it to-go but have also dined on the patio on multiple occasions. They keep the patio comfortable with screens, shades, and fans even on the hottest summer day. Atmosphere is very kid friendly, typically full of families. Depending on my mood I typically order the fruity waffle if I want sweet, or the fried chicken and waffle if I'm in the mood for sweet/savory. Guys the fried chicken and waffle is SO GOOD! The chicken is perfectly seasoned and so juicy, never over cooked or dry. Get extra strawberry butter - it compliments the dish so well. The fruity waffle is also delicious with copious amounts of fresh berries and banana on top. Portion sizes are humongous- sometimes my husband and I split the chicken and waffles. Note that you can ask for all dark or light meat. They are proficient at packing to-go orders and actually have a window in the front to pick them up.
