We recently visited Julington Creek Fish Camp to celebrate our anniversary, and overall, the food was wonderful. Everything brought to the table tasted fresh and delicious. For appetizers, we started with the snapper bites and the fried blue crab claws. Both were cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. For our entrees, we decided on the seafood broil and the fried platters. Both dishes hit the spot. The portion sizes were well balanced, and we left feeling satisfied rather than overly full. On top of that, the pricing was great. Our waiter was great, but the pacing of the meal could have been smoother since it took about 45 minutes to get our entrees. There were a couple of other notable downsides. The restaurant was quite loud, and to top it all off, a woman at the table right next to us had her shoes off. Management really should have controlled that kind of behavior, as it detracts from the dining experience. Furthermore, despite making reservations to celebrate our anniversary, the restaurant did not acknowledge it at all. That was unfortunate. We finally made it to Julington Creek Fish Camp, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We started with a dozen fresh oysters that were clean, briny, and the perfect way to kick off the meal. I had a craving for some fresh seafood and since I was on the coast this was a difficult decision as there are many choices. Fish Camp was the closest and with the weather I went with best closest. Good choice. Upscale by the water and probably should have had a reservation but since I was early I was able to be seated immediately. Service was exceptional as expected for a higher end establishment. The oysters were delicious and the flounder was exceptional. The old fashioned was excellent also. Millie was our server and she was great. It means so much to be attentive to a family with several little kids. She brought oyster crackers for the Hangry babies to have while we waited for the food. I really like this place. I have been here a number of times and just feel like it is super consistent between the service the food in the atmosphere. Sometimes the wait is overly long, but you could do reservations so that would solve for that! I also really liked that they have the heated patio so you can still enjoy the outdoors when it's a little cooler. They have lots of great oyster specials and I'd like to rotate around to try them. She had a craving for whole fried fish, so we pointed the car toward Julington Creek Fish Camp and made a small adventure out of it. It was a gorgeous day, the kind that begs for outdoor seating, and the marina view delivered exactly what it promised. Boats drifting by, sunlight bouncing off the water, an easy start to a celebratory lunch. We began with the grilled octopus and white bean salad, expecting a modest appetizer. What arrived was closer to a full meal. Tender octopus, creamy white beans, spring greens, tomatoes, and a creamy vinaigrette that brought some much needed acidity. Everything was cooked well and thoughtfully assembled, and it set a high bar for what followed. We also ordered a cup of Rick's All Day Seafood Soup, a tomato based broth packed with seafood bits, onions, and celery, with a pleasant back end heat that lingered just long enough. For my main, I went with the Royal Red Shrimp Roll and fries. The shrimp salad was fine but timid, under seasoned and ultimately forgettable, despite decent ingredients and a nicely toasted roll. My wife got her birthday wish, a whole fried yellowtail snapper with fries and coleslaw. The fish arrived hot and beautifully crisp, straight from the fryer. Texture wise, it was spot on. Flavor wise, it needed more salt and more confidence. The theme of the meal became clear. The cooking is solid, even careful, but the seasoning pulls its punches. Outside gives you the best views, if not, maybe a window table. The table split the fried fish bites appetizer and hush puppies. We had two versions of grouper. Both were served over creamy grits. We came here for an impromptu early dinner on the weekend. This isn't our normal fish camp location, but we like to visit other ones. This place was pretty slammed and it was only 4:30pm. When we arrived, we put our name in. The hostess said we'd have to take first available. Saturday was also the hottest day of the year, so I should have known we would have been seated outside. Pro tip: Make a reservation at least a week ahead of time. They are super popular. We were seated outside and it was hot (but what do you expect for July in Florida). Our server was on top of it, getting our drink order and our kiddo's meal order. He opted to have a kid's grilled cheese, I ordered a lemon drop and my better half ordered a beer. The staff was trying to stay on top of adding ice to the A/C units outside and they also had the fans going, but if you're not one for hot/humid weather, I'd recommend you make a reservation. We opted to order flounder bites for an app. They came out pretty quickly and were on top of crunch potato straws...truth be told the flounder was really good, but I could have just had an app of the potato straws with the dipping sauce...tasted like a bang bang shrimp sauce. For dinner I decided to order their new cod special: pan seared cod, with a corn, goat cheese and bacon succotash, on top of cheesy grits. But it ended up being fine. It's complementary, so of course a five dollar tip was all it was. This place was packed for a weekday! Oysters, gator tails, chowder, gumbo, crabs, shrimp and keep thinking seafood, they served it hot, fresh and yummy. Go casual, as a group from work, a dating couple, or to entertain guests from out of town. I'd call for reservations though but you can possibly get in if you just show up hungry. Prepare to wait a bit. Parking is tight but the valet crew can fix you up at the door. A nice bar for lingering while waiting as well with whatever you thirst expects. I'd ask for window upstairs if you call in early for reservation so you can overlook the charming view of water and boats at the docks. It was a random Thursday night but the dining room was absolutely packed, so we happily accepted a table outside on the covered deck. everything passed the vibe check! Service was friendly, if a bit slow. The ambience made up for it- just picture your stereotypical Florida waterside fish camp and this was it. We started with drinks and my first came out overloaded with lime juice- to the point I couldn't really drink it. I HATE sending drinks back, I used to be both a server and a bartender so I'm always reluctant to make them feel overworked or criticized but this drink just wasn't going to work so I hesitantly let our waitress know. She took it in stride and immediately returned with a different drink that made everything all better. Food- I got the broiled seafood platter consisting of shrimp, scallops, grouper, and veggies. Wasn't cheap but worth every penny. They open at 11am so I made sure we showed up then to beat any crowd. Worked! We asked to sit on the deck and got a beautiful view that enhanced our time. Highly recommend the Waygu Beef Burger ($18). Excellent protein. Came with fries (super picky about my fries, but these were pretty good). Two words: bread. pudding. They also have a famous bread pudding made daily. I think they rotate flavors... always cranberry + with another flavor of the day! Apparently we came on white chocolate day - cranberry white chocolate bread pudding: came piping hot with a scoop of ice cream. Serendipitous! Worth coming just for these two items! The fish camp restaurants have been one of my favorites in Jacksonville. I love the fresh fish and great desserts there. It's been years since I last visited, and I tried to visit in December, but my car battery died on me before I could go. So I gave it a shot again yesterday. I am glad I made a reservation as it was getting full. When I arrived, I found only valet parking was available, which was complimentary. When I checked in, I was told that it would take some more time as the previous guests were enjoying dessert. It took about 15 minutes before I was able to get seated upstairs in a window with a nice view of the river. For my drink, I was turned on by the price of the mango mojito (9 dollars). It did take some time to prepare, but it was a refreshing drink with slight taste of the mango. I think I tasted the mint more than the mango, but I still liked it. It was not strong at all, but I wasn't complaining because it was only 9 bucks. For my entree, I had to go with my favorite, the blue crab cakes. It included two sides, so I chose the spinach and seasoned vegetables. I couldn't believe it was still at the same price of 24 dollars. The plate was a bit hot when it arrived. The crab cakes had a good amount of meat, but it was missing the crab taste. I love the sweetness of the crab meat, but it wasn't there. I still enjoyed that it was tender, and the filling was just right though. I liked the seasoned vegetables a bit more, as it had zucchini, mushrooms, and squash with the right amount of seasoning. I think there was garlic in there, which made me go mmm! The sauteed spinach was also quite good. For dessert, I had to go with the suggested Reese's Pieces pie because of peanut butter (the name of the bull I rode the same day). It was rich with the peanut butter mousse texture in a chocolate crust with chocolate syrup. I saved it the next day and enjoyed the sweetness. I probably tasted the calories as well. The service was nice and friendly. It did take some time to get my food and drink, but it was understandable as it was pretty crowded. The atmosphere was casual, but very nice with the views of the river. I also loved the display of their fresh catches. The crowd is social, and there were TVs showing sports. I am very happy that the Fish Camp chain is still making nice food and drinks at very reasonable prices. I wish my crab cake had the sweet crab taste, but still liked it. I think next time I visit, I would try one of their catches like the trout. Plus, I can't believe it has been the same prices from many tests ago. I've been here several times since I moved to the Mandarin area a few years ago. They are super close to our house and do a good job with drinks and the food is excellent. We typically try to get an outside table if it's nice out. They have an upstairs covered deck with around 8 tables I believe. I do wish there was more of a view of the water to be seen but it's really the closest you can get to a water view around here. The last time I was here I had the shrimp and grits which are fantastic. They also make a great old fashioned and the cucumber basil gimlet is quite nice and refreshing. The staff is very nice and knowledgeable and you're really not waiting too long for anything unless they're completely slammed. I will definitely be coming back again and again. read more
