The fried chicken was so good by itself and was my favorite. I can see why it's such a popular menu item. Metro diner is Metro Diner which is a good thing. They have good food and is always a good option when you are unsure where to go. The only thing about them is consistency which if you've read my other reviews you know is one of the top reasons why a place would drop from a 4 to a 2 or 3. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and his place was PACKED. The wait was about 35-40 mins before we got seated at the breakfast bar area. I had the waffles with strawberry butter. The butter changed my life lol. The waffles were nice and fluffy and didn't need much syrup to sweeten them up. It is a little cramped if you sit up near the cooks and it bothered me how close we sat to peoples food as it came out....someone could accidentally sneeze from their seat and contaminate their food. Whenever I'm in Jacksonville this is the BREAKFAST PLACE!!!!! The food is amazing every time all the time!!!!! The staff is amazing and very helpful. You'll never need to ask for a refill. The owner or manager is a very nice gentleman who stops by and checked on myself and my operations manager when we have our morning meeting. The shrimp and grits is MIND BLOWING!!! The portions are full sized and I've never been let down all dozen times I've been here. I bring backup to every meal that I have here. Love this diner. Loved the food, waitress and manager who walked around to make sure we were satisfied. We visited on a Monday morning and had no problem being seated. I had the red, white and blue waffle it was light and fluffy and soooo good. My husband had the greek omelette with hashbrowns. He was quite satisfied and the food was plentiful. Parking lot is small but I think there is off street parking. I saw others sandwiches and they were humongous. Went to this place few times already since we live fairly close to this one location on Hendricks. I've tried the meatloaf, chicken and waffle, crabcake benedict, also shrimp and grits. They were equally delicious! I can't say I have a favorite since I usually come to this place when I am craving for certain thing. The portion is bigger than what I could consume in one sitting but that's just about every American diner I guess. No complaints because I love leftovers! Price is pretty reasonable. Service at Hendricks location is good. Small place so I try to avoid coming here on weekends unless you're ok with long wait time. All and all I love this place. Highly recommend. read more

My first visit at a Florida location. Busy morning at the zoo and now it is time for some lunch. Atmosphere - We sat right up at the counter to watch the action in the kitchen. They had a good mix of tables and booths in the front dining room and I do not even know how much more space they had in the back. Food Drink - Water and our waitress even gave us a to-go water when we finished our meal. That was great for the drive back to Savannah. Lunch - I had the Pittsburgh, and that is one big sandwich. It is named after the city which the sandwich originated in. Created for the truckers in the city so they could have an easy meal to eat on the road. The French fries are inside the sandwich, but here they give you more fries on the side too. I picked the roast beef for my protein. The sandwich was huge but still had great flavors. Service - As soon as we came through the door we were greeted and told we could sit anywhere we wanted. I saw a table for two and my daughter told me she wanted to sit at the counter. What can I say about the Original Metro Diner. This is place that all the other Metro Diner's have to live up to! I enjoy this place, I work not to far from here so it's really easy to walk from my office to here. The staff is always friendly and they know me! One of the things I really enjoy is sitting outside when the weather is nice and working while eating lunch. I will tell you that should always sit in the back room or outside or you will smell like the Metro for the rest of the day. (That's not always a bad thing). I feel really privileged to have known the original before they became a national chain! It's really awesome when I travel to other Metro Diners to educate the staff about how the Bold City Burger got it's name or why there is such thing as a Bissell breakfast! I kept forgetting about this place as I hardly ever drive by it. What a mistake! This definitely feels like the real deal old timey diner. The patio is first come first serve and the wait for the inside tables actually went much faster than the eta we were given. Two people at my table were getting chicken and waffles so I decided to go rogue and try "yo hala on the square" (a deliciously creative take on French toast.) while my meal was delicious, I still only wanted to eat the other peoples fried chicken. Today, I had the hugest craving for hash browns and delicious omelette. I ordered the Western Omelette along with hash browns also a side order of cheesy grits. Honestly the hash browns were the biggest disappointment EVER. The only crispy part was the very thin top layer and barely , it seemed soo undercooked it was SICK. I tossed it. The eggs were trash too, it wasn't even salted, it was as soggy as fake McDonald eggs, and barely any cheese. Not only was the whole meal was just such a let down, it was moist in the most disturbing manner. I regret ever putting in the order. I literally would've been better off ordering breakfast at Waffle House at this point. But I remember Metro Diner being yum when I was young. Our waitress was through and through kind and attentive. Her service felt genuine and pressure free. Waitress was very good at making suggestions, explaining the menu, and communicating our substitutions. The menu contained the perfect blend of breakfast and lunch fare which worked well considering this was our first meal of the day at 4pm. Many of the menu options were very creative (have you ever heard of croissant French roast?) and they had enough variety to satisfy any palette or diet. Food came quickly and was devoured even quicker. Our meals were delectable! For the four of us, 1 turkey club, 1 chicken and pancakes (subbed out the waffles), 1 croissant French toast, 1 moon over my hammie breakfast sandwich, and 1 strawberry cheesecake stuffed waffle to share--that day's special. Everything tasted great but my pancake, the waffle, and the French toast stand out. Breakfast breads are the specialty here, waitress told us so and my taste buds confirmed. Was in Jacksonville for Thanksgiving weekend to spend time with family that lives in the area. They know I'm an active Yelper so they wanted to make sure I love the places we went and they sure picked a great place by bringing me here to Metro Diner; I also heard that Guy Fieri was here filming Diners Drive-ins and Dives. We came for breakfast and were were all hungry and ordering with big eyes. It was recommended that I try the Huevos Rancheros.... OMG !!!!! The dish was truly amazing. It had fried tortilla shells, chorizo sausage, black beans, onions and peppers topped with melted cheese, salsa and sour cream AND on top of that I had a couple of eggs over-easy and the best part of all was the fried jalapeños topping it all off. The dish was huge and I probably should've shared it. The service was amazing and everyone working here was super friendly and kept making sure I had my coffee filled to the rim. Jacksonville sure has some great places to eat but this is definitely my favorite for breakfast. When I left I said I can't wait to come back (and I did return just 2 days later and of course I ordered the same thing). read more

Every couple of months I breakfast at Metro Diner, sometimes at Jax Beach, sometimes at Ponte Vedra. Jax Beach seems to be a much better managed store. Today at Jax Beach, I was served by Morgan K. I complimented her on her efficiency and amazing eye contact, constantly sweeping the busy room and moving quickly and timely. She pointed out that they had been voted best in NE Florida -- I believe it. Everything was cooked just right and the food quality (especially bacon) and preparation was spot-on.
