I was excited by all the reviews and the full parking lot when I arrived. However my To Go order had poor quality control. The hash browns were burnt and actually burned through the to go box. They were hard and inedible. I was very disappointed. The turkey sausage could have been great but they were covered in grease....like they had been on the grill where something greasy had been vooked. Eggs were great. My friend said his grits were good. . I think this may have happened because I ordered breakfast food around the lunch rush. The staff was great. Clean restaurant. The food coming from the kitchen looked fresh and delicious. I will give it another try as we travel from Atlanta to Jacksonville frequently. Metro diner is a very busy and very loud restaurant. The staff is attentive and accommodating. They have a lot of food food that I love and some that I was disappointed in. They have amazing shrimp and grits and their yo hola on the square are amazing. And they do a very good job on standard breakfast items. But this past time I went I decided to try their crab cake Benedict. The egg was poached nicely. However, the crab cake was soggy and tasted like it came out of a can, and was definitely not made fresh. I could not even eat the crab cake part, just the egg and the muffin. I was pretty disappointed, considering how much I enjoyed the other items on the menu that I had tried before. I will go back, but I won't order any thing with crab cakes. read more

Was surprisingly disappointed today. Decided to give this place a try after a couple of years. The server did her best. There was confusion on the line in the galley/kitchen. Could see my food sitting to be picked up while other servers hovered and talked over it. Problem was not all of my granddaughter's order was ready so it sat there. Food was cold once it hit the table and still not all of our order was there. Server offered to have order re-cooked, I accepted because we were waiting on other items. Well she bought back the same bacon re-cooked on the grill, oily, crispy and dark and also the same cheese grits that had been sitting. Grits were cold and cheese stiff. Don't think I'll visit again. The Metro Diner was a great breakfast choice after a long night of eventful Black Friday shopping. We were seated immediatly, and there was no line considering we got there the second they opened. The food was awesome! I ordered a half portion of the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, and my friend ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles. The Benedict was delicious and so were the C&W's! Decent food. Skip the home fries, every time I've ordered them they come out soggy. Prices aren't bad. Service is very hit or miss. They have some great servers and a few that need to be replaced. Not a bad place for breakfast on a weekday. Don't even bother on a Saturday or Sunday, food is good but not worth an hour long wait for a table. read more

Had the red white blue yo holla which is a super sweet blueberry strawberry laden French toast filled with strawberry cream cheese. This is way too sweet and rich. Fish sandwich was very customizable; could pick from fried, frilled, or blackened. Huge piece of fish put not very refined; country fried steak breakfast was very rough and tasteless (though it looked very appetizing), everyone orders the chicken and waffles, it was extremely crispy which was great but was on the salty side. This is one of those places that is clearly overrated because it happened to be on tv. Service was hit and miss. The person who seated us was very friendly, our waiter was never to be seen. We waited 20 minutes just to have him pick up the check. Neither me nor my husband finished our breakfast, it just wasn't good. When you start to look at the pretty terrible parking situation, the incredibly long wait times, the griminess of the place as a whole, and then the unappealing food... Just like I said, once I finally got back and had breakfast, I'd up it to 4 starts ... and I'm not far from making it 5. I had the Crab Cake Benedict, and it was awesome. The only thing that could have made it better was if the English muffin were toasted/grilled more crispy ... maybe that's just me - I like the texture contrast of a well-toasted but not burnt muffin under my eggs. Tha flavors between the tasty crab cake, perfectly poached eggs, and sauce made for a very good dish. The hash browns that come with most of the breakfasts are a specialty, and you can choose to add onions, peppers, meats, etc. at extra charge. Not the best hash browns I've had, but tasty. I'd prefer the diced breakfast potato variety, but again that's a matter of preference. My out of town guests were both definitely pleased with their bagel & lox and veggie egg-white omelette. We got there around 9:45am on Sunday and only had to wait about 3 minutes, but by the time we left, there was quite a long wait (as is normal for Metro). Service was very friendly and attentive, and we didn't feel at all rushed. read more

Finally!!! Had a chance to eat here while still living in Jacksonville, FL. Now that I've moved to Pittsburgh, I see what the fuss was about when it came to the Steak Salad and the Yo Hala! Steak Salad's are a staple here in the Burgh. Who doesn't love french fries on their salad or sandwiches? And the stuffed french toast (the Yo Hala) is also a famous plate here in one of the diners. I was pretty hopeful that Metro would live up to it's reputation especially considering the typical zoo of customers waiting for a table to enjoy their weekend brunch. We live on St Simons Island and made a day trip to Jacksonville to have lunch with my sister. Saw that Metro Diner was feature on Dinners Drive-ins and Dive so we thought we would give it a try and glad we did. The Metro Diner is located in a part of Jacksonville we have never been in so it is off the beaten path. The restaurant is very small so there was a fifteen minute wait. I had the half pound hot pastrami sandwich which was one of the best I have ever had. Will be sure to make a return visit on one of our next trip to Jacksonville. read more

The portions provided are huge and I end my order with asking the server to go ahead and just put half of it in a to-go container. My favorite is the biscuits and gravy. Best breakfast in town. Been there 3 times with 3 different entries and hit it out of the park all 3 times, never a disappointment. Had the biscuits and gravy with sausage patties today with coffee, best I have ever had! Last time was Belgium waffles, they came HOT, and they where tender not chewy and held their heat. Also had their southwest omelet, loaded with meat, cheese and peppers and onion, perfect balance and flavor. Get there early, starts filling up at 8. Service is top notch too. Maybe I'm spoiled. Maybe I expect more from brunch/breakfast. Maybe Jacksonville isn't exactly a culinary hotspot, so this place looks good next to everything else. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't great. I had the eggs florentine, and my boyfriend had the crab cakes benedict (as recommended by Yelp and our waitress). The hollandaise was just missing something. Not bad, but I probably wouldn't order it again. And that's saying something, cause I love me some hollandaise sauce. Hashbrowns were 'alright' and my home fries came out a little...brown. Really though, a charming place, and the service was impeccable. Didn't catch the name of the waitress, but she was fantastic. In short, I would come back, but I wouldn't order any of the benedicts. The shrimp and grits is pretty good - it's a different take on the dish with grit patties instead of regular grits. The sauce is enjoyable, but maybe a little sweet. My daughter had the spinach salad with berries and candied nuts (pecans I think?) and she loved it. The balsamic dressing wasn't very good, though. Kind of a weird dressing - not very balsamic-y. Best food, customer service, and authencity I haven't experienced in awhile. So excited to revisit when back in the area.

My whole family loves this place including my brother and sister and their families who come down from Maryland for visits. (I haven't lived down here long, but my mother and her family have.) All ages love this place in my family, teens to elderly. I love the South Carolina classic breakfast-shrimp and grits, the fact you can get half sizes if you want, the atmosphere, and just about everything about the place. Parking can be a little difficult, but it's just such a cute location with such a yummy and interesting breakfast menu, I never care. Service is excellent and fun, every time. (P.S. There are TVs, though you'll probably want to talk to people instead--if you haven't guessed-- even if you aren't that outgoing, which is why people forget about the shows when reviewing Metro Diner.) read more

Since I've lived here in Jacksonville , there have been so many great updates with Metro Diner. First they've added more locations, more Metro Diner is never a bad they thing! Second, they're now open for dinner, now more people can enjoy the amazing dinner options they offer, my personal favs are the meatloaf and pot pie, so delicious! My husband and I just bought our first home blocks from the San Marco location, I'm not sure why on Yelp it's located in Mandarin, it really is closer to San Marco, but I digress. Of all the Metro Diner locations, this one is my favorite, and it's mainly because of the ambiance and real old school diner vibe it has. I like w sitting at the countertop and watch everything being made, it doesn't help making my order decision easier, because everything looks so amazingly delicious! The staff is friendly, the service is fast and prompt, even when there's a wait I've never waited more than 20 minutes for a table. This is one of the places that is on my list to bring my out of town guests. My dad insists on eating here at least twice when he comes up from Miami, he's also a big fan of DD&D. This is an absolute must on the Jacksonville list of places to eat, it truly is a local gem, this is the place for you to come if you want amazing dinner food with extremely generous portions with great prices! read more
