Went last night for dinner at 5. It was crowded and some people leaving said the food was good. We waiting 15 minutes for a table. Ordered our drinks and then was told there was no fish. My mother-in-law tried to order something else and was told they were out of that. Then the waitress went back to the kitchen and came back with a list of at least 6 things they were out of. We ordered anyway and waited until 6:30 after being told at least 7 times our food was coming right up, it never appeared at that point we told the waitress we were going to leave. She said she would send the manager over, he never came over and finally she saw that we were just going to leave. She was very apologetic, actually felt bad for all the servers, I'm sure they lost out on lots of tips. Not sure I'll be returning back anytime soon. read more

Visited last night for dinner there were 3 in our party! Wait time was 20 minutes and that was accurate, however the wait area is small ! First impression was the real diner atmosphere was not present! No dessert cases to temp the the patrons! The atmosphere is very noisy with the open kitchen , we hardly noticed that there was a counter and stools for anyone who wanted fast service. Compared to what we are used to in local diners the menu was small and the specials were written in chalk on boards in the rear of the restaurant. Service was prompt and courteous, however our wait persons shirt had multiple stains present unlike the dozens of "training staff" that were well marked! Our food cam out in a timely manner but not as 1 of us ordered and one seems to be served on a dirty rimmed plate so 2 went back for re do's ! Fried Chicken dinner was pretty tasty but the veggies although fresh had little taste! Rice , bean and shrimp dish was so-so and a breakfast sandwich was OK but bacon was hard! Consensus was no one would avoid the place but there are many other better choices possibly at a better price point! Considering that there are many other chain restaurants within a few miles I think Metro will have heavy competition ! read more

We stopped by the new Metro Diner in Newark for dinner tonight, and I was rather disappointed with my experience. We were seated promptly. We asked host how he was doing, and he said "Terrible! I'm at work!" Our waitress came over and introduced herself, and took our drink and order, and then asked for our dinner order at the same time! We hadn't really had much time to look at the menu, so we decided real quick what we wanted, and she disappeared. She finally came back with our drinks about 15 minutes later, at the same time that our food AND our salad was being delivered..(I've worked in the food service industry for years, and traditionally you get your salad BEFORE your meal.) My son and I had both ordered extra dressing for our salads, and neither one of us got it. I had also asked for some horseradish for my sandwich, and they didn't bring that, either. We couldn't locate our waitress yet again, so we asked another server for our salad dressing, and the horseradish we had asked for. We were NEVER asked if we wanted another drink..And once again had to flag down another server to get refills for our sodas! We were about halfway through our meal when our waitress FINALLY reappeared..and instead of asking if our food was ok, or if we needed anything, she dropped the check on the table and started to walk away! I said "Excuse me, but I'd like to order some dessert." She rolled her eyes, asked what we wanted, and then snatched the check off the table like we were bothering her! She came back a few minutes later with our dessert wrapped up in a To-Go Box, and put another larger To-Go box on the table, (apparently for our dinner?) .. And once again she dropped the check on the table, and vanished! We felt extremely rushed and uncomfortable...like our being there was somehow an inconvenience for the wait staff and the host! So we finished our dinner, and opened up and ate our boxed up desserts! Once again we had to flag down our server to pay our check.. Not once did anyone say "Thanks for coming". Or ask how our food was, etc..just very rude staff! The food was actually VERY good, and the portions were ok (though a little on the pricy side for a diner) .. and the restaurant itself was very clean and bright..The open kitchen area was an interesting touch. I'm not sure if I will go back again after dealing with the rude staff, And being rushed through our meal, And having to keep flagging people down to get everything we ordered, And flagging people down to get refills on our drinks, etc.. After hearing too many to count raves about Metro Diner, I recently ate breakfast there with my family. We went on a Sunday morning and even though it was busy, we only had a 20-25 minute wait which seemed to fly by. We were greeted by our waiter as we were being seated. The portion are HUGE, which I should've figured out as everyone was leaving with bags. The food was delicious. The manager stopped by to check on us twice, which was really nice. But our waiter (I feel bad that I don't remember his name), he worked his butt off to make our visit so enjoyable. Drinks never went empty, he'd just stop by to make sure we were ok. He kept us posted on when our food was coming. He was just GREAT. I highly recommend Metro Diner and will be returning next week. read more

Went here for a quick home cooked meal while working in the area. Ordered Beef Tips and Broccoli with an extra charge for a house salad. After 30 minutes and no food a Manager comes over and apologized for the wait and offered me a " on the house salad" I explained I had ordered one and have waited 30 minutes for it but that did not matter. They brought me the free salad and after another 30 minutes the same manager came back and put some fries in the table again apologized for the now hour wait! I explained that I can't understand how I have not gotten my food as all you really do is heat up the beef. Any way in ten minutes more the beef tips came out in a bowl with no broccoli and I waited another ten minutes for a bowl of Broccoli that I could never eat. No adjustments were made for my hour and a half wait and to Top it off the Free salad was on my bill. Metro Diner you will never get another penny from me ever!!! read more

This place is "ok". My friend and I have been looking forward to trying this place for some time now and since we both had the day off, we decided to finally come and enjoy a nice breakfast. Well... it wasn't that "nice". I have this restaurant 2 stars only because their facility was clean and our server Jessica was great. The food came quickly and was brought to us by a different server. And this is where things went bad. We both had the meat lovers omelet with hash browns and white toast. I took my first bite of the omelet and a little bit of the hash browns and was met with very bland food. If the sausage itself didn't have its own seasonings, the omelet would be completely tasteless. It was so odd. You would think that it would have some taste, due to the bacon it's supposed to have. Well, maybe if the bacon was properly cooked and not burnt to a unrecognizable crisp, we would've had a little more flavor. I ended up trying to use ketchup to give my meal "some" flavor, while my friend used the salt and pepper that were on the table. It just wasn't pleasant to eat our meals and we both ended up just eating the toast and leaving the rest to be packed up and taken in a doggy bag to go. So, I'd give this place a 5 for service and cleanliness, but their cooking skills could use a whole lot of work. read more

We've been to Metro quite a few times since they've opened. I've read some of the reviews about the service being inconsistent. Yes, the staff is new but from our experience, they're learning fast! Our servers have consistently been attentive and treat us well. They are friendly and helpful. And when we come in, we are recognized as repeat customers. We often sit at the counter where we can see the kitchen staff at work. They are always hustling. The manager is always circulating and talking to the customers. He's always trying to make sure that they have a great meal and a good dining experience. He listens. The food is very good and reasonably priced. I will definitely be visiting again. read more

My three children and I went for the first time. The wait was expected as the parking lot was full so we knew that was a good sign. Once seated the wait was still a bit long to order our food. The kids had the chicken and waffles and said the chicken was a little dry however the waffles were a hit. I had the Monte Cristo and it was a bit dry like it had been over cooked. So needless to say I didn't eat it all and didn't make a fuss as I don't trust when you complain that you may run into an issue with someone doing something to your food. Staff was friendly just we were a bit disappointed after waiting and waiting that our meal was excellent like others had noted to us. Should I have said something then instead of doing it here? I just came from the Metro Diner in Newark. All I wanted was a ham and cheese breakfast omelet and the waiter said that I couldn't get it with just ham and cheese. I had to order it just as it was on the menu with mushrooms. I told the waiter just ham and cheese and he laid the menu on the table and said that I could either order the southern omelet or the western omelet. I guess it was just to hard for them to remove an item from the omelet before cooking it. It wasn't like I was asking them to add items to the omelet. Everyone doesn't eat mushrooms. I'm never going back there again. Very bad customer service. To top it all off, I found $15.00 laying on the sideway right outside their entrance door, and turned it over to their staff since I thought it may be one of their funds I had found. The hostess thanked me, them checked with the staff, and said that it belonged to the manager who had dropped it on the ground. read more

We were at Metro on Thursday morning 8/10 for our 2nd visit. We had to ask three times for powdered sugar, each time they brought a cup with about 1/4 tsp in it. The 1st time took forever as the woman who delivered our food (not our waitress) left and continued delivering food to other tables. The 3rd time, our waitress said, yes they can be very skimpy when I ask and if this 3rd try wasn't enough, please let her know. My pancakes were ok, but the side of blueberry compote was watery with mushed blueberries. My husband asked the woman helping our waitress for more coffee. She never returned and we had to flag down our waitress. Our waitress was nice and friendly. Her helper was not. I am sorely disappointed after our 2nd visit. read more

Went last week on a Friday night and had a very friendly waitress who had a waitress- in-training tagging along with her.They were both bubbly and attentive.Trainee went to get my drink and to my shock the regulat waitress decided to have a gossipfest about the trainee.The food was great and came out in 5 minutes but I wasn' t too thrilled about having to listen to the waitress' problems.Need to keep a better eye on the staff- I don' t need to hear it and the trainee seemed capable enough. read more

I never write reviews but I felt like I needed to for this place. I'm in the area visiting a friend who gets take out from here sometimes but has never been inside so this was a first for both of us. We were greeted by a lovely personable hostess and brought to a table. The vibe in the restaurant was very elevated for a diner. When my bacon came it was undercooked and I was nervous to send it back because I'm not "that" type of customer but the waitress, Julie, said "..do you like your bacon like that" and I said no and she was like yeah I didn't think so let me send it back. She was so apologetic and brought me new, perfectly crispy bacon along with one of the owners, Day, who was SO nice and apologetic as well. Unfortunately one of my friends drumsticks for her chicken and waffles was undercooked as well (the rest of it was perfectly fine). She wasn't gonna say anything but again, Julie noticed and took care of it. The bill for the most expensive entree, the chicken and waffles was taken off and we were so thankful for the great service. We have eaten at The Metro diner several times since it opened and have loved it every time. There was a 1/2 hr wait at lunchtime but this is very typical for good diners. For breakfasts we arrived early (just before 7 am) and we were immediately seated. My husband loves traditional breakfasts and his scrambled eggs, home fries, and scrapple were exactly what he wanted. Coffee was hot and fresh and our server kept his cup filled. I am not a fan of breakfast food and avoid meat so I loved being able to order lunch items for breakfast. My vegetable/bean wrap was excellent and large enough that I bought half home for lunch. On each visit the waitstaff was attentive and did a great job (even during the busy lunch hours). This morning I casually mentioned that in the past I'd received treatment at The Helen Graham Center (very close to the diner) and when the the manager learned this he immediately gave me a Metro Diner BC awareness t-shirt, offered genuine support, and showed incredible kindness. It was totally unexpected and I was touched. The only issue I have is that there are too many choices on the menu. Metro will remain our go to diner and we will continue to recommend to friends and family. If you go during busy hours be prepared for a bit of a wait but we think it's worth it. - Barb & Jim read more

I was so lucky to be invited to their soft opening last Saturday, 07/22/17. What a fun, upbeat kind of place! Everything we had was wonderful! Fried chicken platter with seriously almost a whole chicken (I had chicken for days afterward!), wonderful mashed potatoes, kind of chunky with excellent brown gravy. Isn't gravy the way to tell if a diner is good or not? I think so. Loved the sautéed veggies, complete with grill marks. My friends loved their breakfast platter and creamed chip beef. Also I'm not a biscuit lover but theirs was so good I ate it plain! My favorite was the employee's response to any request, and I mean any request "Who am I to tell you no?" I asked for pancakes for dessert and that's the response I got. They were great! What's not to love about this place? Ridiculously nice employees and management, wonderful comfort style food and EXCELLENT prices, huge portions which we Delawareans love. I highly recommend! read more

I visited the diner when it first opened. It was great. I visited it a month later it was good. The next time was not good. We were a party of three, we ordered breakfast. Not one order was correct. The server was interested in another table and friends that were waiting rather than getting our orders corrected. We decided to come back to try again. This time was unacceptable! First a person who had been waiting and came in later than us and another party, started to complain about the wait, got loud so, they took her in front of us and others waiting. We got seated and ordered the potato soup. It came out thick like mashed potatoes. We told our server, she took the soup back said that is made that way. Next came entree I got mine complete but my dining partner did not have the fries. She said they are brining out fresh hot ones. They came after he finished his sandwich, they were cold and wilted. Told her that and she just walked away. We got our check and none of the soup or fries were deducted. There was no manager on duty , we paid the entire bill but will never come back. My wife and I have gone here twice now. First on Tuesday, opening day, for breakfast. My wife had eggs, hash browns, sausage and English muffin. The eggs were not cooked as ordered. The sausage was ok. The English muffin was cold. I ordered pancakes, bacon, hash browns and English muffin. The food was mediocre. The pan cakes were cold and dry. The bacon was slightly warm and tasty. The only thing that came piping hot were the hash browns. The manager came by and took $7 off our check. We didn't want money off, we wanted what we ordered and wanted everything hot. So, we decided to try it for dinner on Thursday. I ordered meatloaf platter, mashed potatoes and veggies. My wife ordered Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes and cole slaw. The meatloaf was good, but the mashed potatoes were cold. The veggies were good. The fried chicken was acceptable, but for $15.99 she expected the chicken to be wonderful. It wasn't! Again her mashed potatoes were cold. In summary, we expected this diner to "blow us away". We've been watching and waiting for this diner to open. And once it opened we were disappointed. The prices are high and the food was mediocre and cold. We are regular "eat out" folks. We eat out almost every day. I suggest to checkout some of our favorites, like Guildays for breakfast in Glasgow and Texas Roadhouse for dinner in Bear. We were there for the first time yesterday, and were very pleased. I am so excited to finally have a place that actually knows how to make a Reuben sandwich. It was absolutely awesome !! The fries were just as awesome, crispy done liked I asked and slightly seasoned. I had to force myself to stop eating them to eat my sandwich. My husband tried the Philly steak sandwich and was also pleased, best thing, the roll was toasty warm too. The coffee, which is always a deal breaker for me, was very good. Our food came very quickly and was very hot. The wait staff was prompt and pleasant.... We met Jeff who came by our table, and he was so nice to speak with. I raved about he Reuben and told him we would be back. Some reviews were negative but I think that we should cut them a break since they are just opening and the staff is working hard to get everything right. My experience here today wasn't great. I'm going to chock it up to the fact that it's new and they recently had a decent write up in the News Journal. They were pretty slammed. My buddy and I came in at 12:30 for lunch and waited about 15 min for a table. We waited another 10 before the waitress came over and said she'd be with us shortly. She never came back. Thankfully another waitress came over about 10 min after that and took pity on us. We placed our order and probably waited another half hour for the food to arrive. My buddy had a Reuben and fries which he said was good. I had creamed chip beef on toast. Honestly I've made better at home. Lots of creamed, not much beef. After we were done and ready to pay I was informed that the credit card machine was down and I didn't have enough cash. I had to walk next door to rite aid and pay $3.75 (loan shark charges) to use their ATM! The waitress that eventually waited on us was very sweet and apologetic so I left a good tip for her. I'll wait 6 months before I go back to see if my experience was just growing pains. read more

We met my parents here last night after they had a good experience here a week ago. Last night was very different. Once we were seated, our order was taken fairly quickly. I was starving, so I ordered a side salad with the expectation that it would come out first. No one returned to our table until 30 minutes later when our food was delivered (they forgot my salad but that was remedied fairly quickly). The majority of our food was brought out cold and it looked as if it had been sitting for a while - the cheese on everyone's sandwiches was congealed. They brought out the wrong order for my dad, and returned to the kitchen to place the right order. Normally at restaurants, this is not a big deal and the error is corrected quickly. Here, however, it was not. 10 minutes later, we are informed that they were out of Swiss cheese that was supposed to go on his sandwich. Why it took 10 minutes to figure this out when correcting his order should have been a priority, I will never know. It took 30 minutes from the time the corrected order was put it for my dad to get his dinner. By this time, everyone else is done with their dinners and it has taken a full hour to get my dad his pastrami on rye (and how long should that really take anyways!?). The manager did come out to apologize and took care of our bill, but this service was ridiculous. Needless to say we will not be returning. read more
