Me and the husband stoped in on a Sunday afternoon. They had hand sanitizer on the tables, and staff are wearing mask. Indoor and outdoor seating. Started off with Mimosas, what's a Sunday without them.. Even though we ended up going for lunch instead of breakfast it was till a good choice. I had the fish and chips, with slaw on the side. The footprint of the diner is very similar The food and atmosphere drag down the rankings of this establishment. Ambiance : 3/5 The people were spread out appropriately but it was a bit dingy and the bathroom REALLY need a deep cleaning. In the age of Covid this should be a priority. Food/Drink 3/5 I had a Canadian veggie omelet with a side of avocado and tomato. The entree came with and English muffin that was sent back (stale). The biscuit replacement was good. The side of tomatoes as a substitute for the home fries left a lot to be desired. Service : 4/5 Brandon our server was very good. He wore a mask followed Covid food handling guidelines and was friendly. He apologized about the English Muffin and promptly brought back the biscuits to enjoy with our meal. I enjoyed my meal here. I don't particularly care for fried chicken and waffles but if you do like that then this is definitely the place for you! The service is very nice and fast. The inside is very cozy and gave me very much retro diner vibes. I liked my eggs and bacon. It was really good. I would say the hash browns are good but pretty greasy. Having been to other locations of Metro Diner, and having a disappointing experience the last visit, we were a tad hesitant to try this new location, but boy am I glad we did. We arrived a little bit after the lunch rush, and were able to be seated immediately. Our server, Matthew, was there in an instant to take our drink order. We spent some time perusing the menu as well as the specials board that is prominently displayed on the back wall of the first room. My hubs decided on the Bold City Burger, which came with a specially blended cheese (3 different kinds); jalapenos, bacon, & was served with your choice of side. The teen in the group decided on Chicken & Waffles, and I chose Shrimp and Grits. Food came up fairly quickly, and was served nice and hot. The kitchen is in view from the seating area, and they are hustling and bustling back there for sure. Although I didn't get to taste the burger, my husband said it was the best he has ever had (and he loves burgers). Just the right amount of heat, and the burger itself was juicy and cooked perfectly. My daughter's chicken & waffles were beautiful to look at. They are served with a strawberry butter (which I quickly took a taste and it is yummy!), The syrup is served with squirts of hot sauce, and the chicken was cooked to perfection - crispy outside, and nice & juicy inside. My shrimp and grits were great as well. A little different as the grits are made into little "cakes", with cheese and crispy outside. The shrimp was large and cooked perfectly. Little pieces of sausage and bacon are in the creamy sauce surrounding the grit cakes. I just recently became a shrimp and grits fan and this did not disappoint. Atmosphere is a little loud as the tables are fairly close together, but considering how busy they are, they need this amount of seating. Staff was all very friendly, and helpful to each other. Manager stopped by our table to ask how everything was, and our server was terrific. Attentive, but not hovering, and there when we needed him with a bright smile each time. We will definitely be back, and in fact bought gift certificates to share with others so they can have a great meal as well. read more

Yes, the wait is long when you go at peak times - FOR A REASON. The food is incredible, consistently delicious and served hot! The staff never forgets my order or any substitutions I've asked for, they're ON POINT. The kitchen is efficient and it's a pleasure to watch them crank out order after order of gorgeous waffles with strawberry butter, perfectly cooked eggs, creamy hollandaise and stacked sandwiches so big you can barely fit them in your mouth. Worth the wait, and a staple in our eat-out rolodex. read more

I went there this morning to meet a friend for breakfast. I asked the waitress if I could sit in a booth and she said yes, then she forgot about me. But I was not in a rush. But she came over to me and said why are you sitting in a dirty booth? And I said well you didn't clarify where I should sit and I just figured you'd wipe the table down. Then she got snotty with me and said if it less than friendly tone of voice, "why would you want to sit in the dirty booth?" The Pittsburgh salad is my all time favorite! The shrimp & grits can feed me two times there is so much of it. I enjoy the Kingsley Ave location better that any of the other locations. Food of course was great however..... Cooks (with the exception of the guy with the blue mask) and our server had her mask under her nose and under her chin most of the time and used her fingers and grabbed it from her lip and put it above her nose. This place always has a line outside for Good Reason!!! We have never waited more than 25 minutes for a table even on a holiday. This is a well-oiled machine, humming along at a steady pace. Once seated, your server greets you immediately and you have your drinks before you can blink. Everyone works together to make this a wonderful experience. A sign of great management is a happy employee. We've been here numerous times and the staff is always smiling and pleasant, even during what should be stressful times. The food is absolutely amazing! I usually get the San Francisco Benedict (eggs benedict with avocado). It never fails to deliver!! The omelets are huge and full of tasty ingredients. Their favorite and specials items tend to be amazing. A few other things on the menu I have tried are on good, but nothing special. Personal Top Picks 1. Chicken and Waffles: Fried chicken with a belgian waffle and strawberry butter. The butter really complements the waffle. They give you a hot sauce mixed with syrup as a dipping sauce for the chicken. Most of the time I come here, the chicken is fried to southern perfection. However, the last time I came, it was slightly overdone. Savory meets sweet, a must try. 2. Vortex Burger: Two grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun for a burger. Topped with a slaw, tomato and bacon. I hold the bacon, because I don't eat pork but the burger is really good. Think burger meets comfort food. There is also the option of adding a fried egg. 3. Yo Hala: Stuffed french toast topped with a berry compote. Hits the sweet tooth perfectly. They have occasional specials on other flavors like pineapple, also amazing. Other things to try are the flavored coffees and teas. A nice touch to the traditional. They are always busy but the lines move fast. If you choose to sit at the counter, the wait is shorter and you can watch them make the food. You can even sit outside. The wait staff is is pretty nice as well. I highly recommend this place. We almost left. I finally changed it to 3 and we were seated, and we just ordered her food and made room anyway. It is very loud if you're in the main dining room, so get the back if you can. I've been here a few times over the past few years and the food and service are always great. HUGE portions and a wide variety of food with lots of flavor. I would recommend the Yo halla on the square, chicken and waffles, or their spin on shrimp & grits if you want to try something different. All of the restaurants are pretty small so you will have to wait for a table if you go during peak time, but the food is worth the wait. The owner John is so nice. So my mom hyped this place up...so I had to pay the diner a visit to see what was what The shrimp and grits are possibly the best on the west side of Jax! I've never had shrimp in loaf form!
