As a breakfast restaurant waitress myself, I know how some days can be stressful serving. I understand that you can accidentally come off as being inattentive or rude because there's so much going on at once. I've visited this location 4 times now in the last 6 months and somehow the last couple of times I keep getting the same waitress. The first time I had her she gave us maybe a minute to look at the menu and when I told her I wasn't ready she said "well I thought you said you've been here before", came back maybe a minute later again and I said once again I wasn't ready and she replied with "did you even look at the specials board". Finally she gave my husband and I time to look and when she walked back over she said "okay little miss have you made up your mind". It was rude to the point that my husband even asked me what I did to tick her off. Ate there again today. Same waitress. After we received our food she never once came back to check on us to even see if the food was okay. We sat waiting on our check with empty stacked plates for quite some time. Granted she's standing by us talking to another waitress, walking by us plenty of times, and not once gave us attention. The front hosts were very kind and even the busers looked to be doing a great job of keeping things nice and clean especially with everything going on right now. I got a waffle that was pretty bland and had nothing special to it. For anyone reading this I do recommend the mimosas and the shrimp and grits, very good! And if management is reading this, good God get rid of that waitress. read more

Hey folks! Just wanted to correct myself on a few details when I went back and had this incredible dish again. The succulent, savory pieces scattered in the blanket of sauce were actually andouille sausage. Also, that sauce is not really called a gravy, but a bechamel sauce. And lastly, I believe there are 8 pieces of shrimp, not 7 like I had put in my previous review. Another dish I would like to put out in the limelight is the Yo Holla at the Square. OMG. The flavors, tender apples, and richness of this dish would settle any sweet tooth and fill any stomach for hours. Definitely a must try as well! I call back because I was pushing time for a meeting spoke with a female who stated that she would mail a gift card. I received a gift card and apology so I'm updating my review. My boyfriend and I were in Plainfield to have his car tinted at Ziebart's and saw Metro Diner was nearby and had good reviews, so we decided to stop in for breakfast before heading home. We came in on a slow Wednesday morning and sat outside on the patio because the weather was great. However, the patio had food crumbs on tables and trash blowing around in the breeze. Not great. We get our menus and I ordered coffee and the Bissell Breakfast (2 eggs of your choice, bacon, toast, hash browns, and a short stack of pancakes). I finished my coffee quite quickly and our waitress never came back to refill it during our stay. About 15 minutes pass by and another woman who works there came out to the patio to fill customer's coffee. Another 10 minutes went by after that and our food finally came out and our waitress asked if we needed anything. I said butter (there was none for the toast and it was not already buttered) and syrup for the pancakes. Both my boyfriend and I immediately noticed that the food was 1) kind of cold even though it was just served to us and 2) there was absolutely NO seasoning on anything. To try and combat the blandness, we looked for salt and pepper shakers and none were to be found. Our waitress came back and set the syrup and butter on the table and immediately walked away. I opened the butter to put on my toast and there was literally trash in the little cup on top of the butter... we did not see the waitress again for another 10 minutes. When I brought it to her attention and asked for a new one she took it and said she's so sorry and then disappeared and came back 5 minutes later with a new one and immediately left again. The fact that I was served that was never brought up again. When I finally started to eat my pancakes was when I was really over the entire visit. They felt like rubber. I couldn't easily cut into them with my fork and when I finally took a bite they were awful. Again not very flavorful, and they had a dense, rubber texture. Not light and fluffy like pancakes are supposed to be. Roughly 20 minutes later the waitress came back and sat the bill on the table in between us without saying a word and walked away. We had never eaten there before and didn't know if we were supposed to pay with her or inside? Then another 10 minutes passed and she came back with an iPad for us to pay on, so that answered our question. There was no deduction on the bill for being served contaminated butter or even an apology from the manger on duty. I don't know if the food is better for lunch or dinner, but we will not return here again. read more

Everyone from the west side always talks about Metro Diner. For a chain restaurant that everyone talks about, we were expecting much more. We ordered the chicken and waffles and the chicken sandwich. But after eating other items learned ur going to have leftovers no matter what, so go for it if ur in the mood. The portions are huge no matter what. Started with biscuits. If you haven't had a real good biscuit order these. If you have, order them--don't miss out. Dense and flakey. Crispy crust. Peaks apart to perfection. The fried crust on the country fried steak and fried chicken tenders was thick but light. Very crunchy. And dry like a fried crust should be, not greasy or oily. Love me the fried steak with traditional white gravy. Chicken tenders were so good didn't need dipping sauce. Eat them straight up. Avoid the fries. Nothing special and not worth it when better side is available. Mashed were nice but better with gravy. Served dry, need gravy. So ask for it. read more

This place was great! Tried it for breakfast and was impressed w the variety on the menu. Eventually I want to try the chicken and waffle lol I had a basic 2 egg breakfast. My eggs were slightly less medium than I ordered, but overall, not a deal breaker. The item I loved I didn't even order, my husband did. Their biscuits and gravy is homemade. We were looking for something good for supper when they popped up on door dash. Decided to give them a try. The food was delicious.

I want to start out by saying that I was very impressed (and surprised!). I wasn't expecting a chain to produce the quality or type of food that I was looking for. All of the food sounded and looked great. I chose the spicy honey chicken sandwich and a cup of the yogurt and granola with berries. It was great and affordable! My husband chose the huevos rancheros. Those were delicious! They do serve bloody marys & mimosa for a very good price. I did not have one myself so I can't comment on how they taste. The service was great! The women at the door taking names told us how great the food is and that a 30 minute wait was well worth it. They had complimentary coffee and water while you waited. It all looked great and the portions were decent, it just had weird seasonings on it or something and we just didn't enjoy it. Service was pretty good. I ate at Metro Diner, Plainfield for the first time at about 3 pm. I had the pleasure of being served by Debra who was fantastic. Since Chicken and Waffles is one if their specialities, that's what I ordered. The waffle was thick, light ans very tasty. Its served with real maple syrup and the option of hot sauce mixed which I skipped. The strawberry butter was okay but I preferred regular butter. Fried chicken: it consist of a while side of chicken (leg, wing, thigh and breast). Unlike other places which Cook all pieces for the same time, they brought out the leg and wing first, then the thigh a couple of minutes later and then the breast last. We just discovered this gem of a restaurant so nice to find new local places to eat. I had the Croissant French Toast breakfast. It came with a side of meat (I chose bacon) 2 eggs prepared perfectly over medium, and a choice of sides. Plenty to choose from but I had the grits. The best grits I've ever had. And choice of toast. I had grilled sourdough bread. Perfect! It was way more than can I could eat so I saved the French toast for a bedtime snack My husband ordered the pot roast that he enjoyed to the last bite. Tender beef. Just right carrots, onions, potatoes and celery. Forgot to mention he started with a bowl of broccoli cheddar cheese soup. I didn't mind that he said it was better than mine. I had a bite and totally agreed with him Mariah was our server and she was amazing. Food came out quickly and nice and hot. The owner stopped by our table to check and see that Everything was OK. Metro Diner used to be a staple for my boyfriend and I. This location has went downhill very quickly. The only thing that was good was the service. Beside that the food was horrible and the manager was a very rude man. We walked in and it took about 5 minutes to be greeted, mind you it was pretty empty in the dining room. We ordered our food and the grilled chicken was super rubbery. The bread on the sandwich was completely burnt. I also would NOT recommend the potato soup. There were absolutely NO potatoes in it. It tasted like a horrible greasy type gravy. The salad I had was brown and slimy. We ate maybe 2 bites and left. We tried to speak to the manager but he took it personally when we spoke about the food because I guess he's the one that made it. Either way don't waste your money here. Go to McAlister's if you really want a great experience. We will not be back unless things can be made right with our past food. The server was a really sweet girl though and we still tipped her well because we know she had nothing to do with the food. read more

To start, the food is great and service is great too. The worst part for us is how they're handling business during the COVID pandemic. Seating is at 100% even though the state mandate does not allow for that yet. Tables are simply too close together. It was hard to navigate through the area without touching tables or backs of chairs. We felt very uncomfortable and debated leaving several times, but we were passing through the area and just wanted a quick bite to eat. I was prompted to go by their PR for my blog, but I am forever grateful to know about this place. The atmosphere is that gritty breakfast diner vibe of a local owned place, but the flavor is HUGE and I loved the service as well! I had chicken & waffles, and while I am admittedly a "meat" girl, preferring chicken over carbs, I was IN LOVE with the waffles. The strawberry butter and sweet & spicy sauce were perfection. My husband had the burger that had grilled cheese for buns, and it was HUGE and delicious. He also had a HUGE pancake, and a piece of key lime pie. He has a big appetite, but he loved everything! My coworkers and I frequent this place every other week. They serve alcoholic beverages along with the rest of the menu starting at 7:00 AM. So its nice to be able to order and enjoy a beer or Bloody Mary after a long night at work while you relax and wait for your food. The omelettes are made the way an omelette is suppose to be made, the fillings and cheese in the middle and the egg folded over. The staff and is very friendly and make you feel welcome when you enter the restaurant. I've always been here first thing when it opens, so its never been busy and is always quiet. I have always ordered breakfast so I don't know how their lunch and dinner taste. This will be the spot for my coworkers and I when we are up for breakfast in the mornings after shift is over. read more

Our waitress was very nice and bubbly. The menu here is a bit overwhelming. I hate large menus that make it hard for me to decide so I went w the All American burger no cheese bc I felt like I was under pressure to pick. The burger was good and fresh. Not really sure what that lettuce relish type mixture was but it was good. I got the onion rings for a 50cent upcharge and they were pretty tasty. My husband got the meatloaf plate and his looked and tasted good. Everyone else around me had good looking food but none looked healthy at all. The wax paper thing the silverware came in seems like such a waste for some reason. I really wish they didn't use those just to toss them in the landfill. I went in before lunch time and there were not very many people in there. I ordered bisquits & gravy. After waiting on my order about 1/2 hour, I asked my waitress what was taking so long. She said she was wondering that too and would go check on it. She said the batch of gravy was not very good, so they had to make a new batch. The server was polite, but I felt she should have told me earlier and see if I would have wanted something else instead. She also told me the gravy was worse yesterday. This was my first time at Metro Diner and overall it was a good experience. I got the crab cake Benedict and it was delicious. There was a lot of crab meat and I could tell that it wasn't just a frozen patty. We didn't have to wait long for our food and everyone at our table liked what they ordered. This locations is fairly new so they still have some issues. I hope to go back again and eventually give it a higher rating. The one issue I saw happen multiple times was the hostess bringing people to their tables while it was still being cleared. Once some of the kinks get worked out I think it'll be a regular spot for people in the Plainfield area. read more

My first time visit, was bomb shelled by the cinnamon swirl pancake. It was fantabulous! The home-style/diner cooking struck a home run. I had a taste of my partners chicken & waffles and my eyes bulged with joy. They were as good as you'll get in the South and dare I say better than Roscoe's?
