No matter what you feel like eating for breakfast, thus is the place - from the basic bacon and eggs to crepes to chicken and waffles, and everything in between! Today was my second time trying metro diner since moving to the area, The portions are large and the menu has a great selection.... BUT the food has almost 0 flavor. Its really disappointing because the service is GREAT and the atmosphere is excellent. The coffee is fresh and they bring you all of your suggested condiments to the table ( i wish they had sugar in the raw ) but they do compensate. After visiting Saint Augustine for the day, we made it back to our hotel to rest up for a little while before looking to find something to have dinner that evening. So, the next thing I did was turn to Yelp to look for places in the area for dinner; it's what you do. I visited this place on February 27, 2016. When we made it to the place, the parking lot was already quite busy. This place is located at the end of shopping center. Parking was pretty easy to find. Once we got inside, the place was already quite busy and thought we'd have to wait. However, that was not the case and were seated immediately. Within about a minute or so, the server was at the table welcoming us and asking what we would like to drink. After she came back with the drinks, she asked us if we were ready to order. The menu was quite large, so we weren't quite ready to order, but at that time, we did order the Charleston cheese dip appetizer. A few minutes later, our server came back with the appetizer and then asked us for our orders. At this point, we were ready to order the main course. I had ordered the hot turkey plate, substituting the veggies for the chili instead. The Charleston cheese dip was delicious. It was like a cheese fondue with great flavors and taste. I would definitely get this appetizer again on a future visit if I'm in the area again. Shortly after finishing that, the entrees came out. The hot turkey plate was delicious, flavorful and a large portion size. You definitely get your money's worth and value here. The turkey was hot and tender, just the way I like it. The mashed potatoes were also quite hot and delicious. I could tell by the taste that they are likely mashed in house given the freshness felt in the taste of it. The baguette bread was also freshly made and hot when it came out as well. Overall, this was a great food experience, and probably one of the best experiences I've had in long time. During the meal, the manager was visibly present going around to all the tables. He stopped at our table as well. It was nearly at the end of the meal, so he was asking how things went. Of course I told him how well everything went and also talked about that they have other locations as well. I didn't even realize this would be a "chain" until after that. During that talk, I was telling him that they need to bring this place up to Virginia Beach. It would fit in very well and would give more of a true diner in the area. After talking to the manager, our server came back to the table with the check and also a slice of their key lime pie. It wasn't something I had ordered, so it was a bit of a surprise. It was the manager who had gotten it for us. The key lime pie was actually good, even though I'm not a big fan of that kind of pie. In the end, it's hard for me to write a five star review with just one visit. However, this place just blew everything away. Everything was perfect, including top notch service and attention to detail from all of the staff. The server was around multiple times clearing plates when they were empty, refilling drinks as needed, etc. This was all done flawlessly at a time when the place was pretty much at capacity with most tables being occupied. If you are in the Saint Augustine area, this is a must-do place to check out. I will definitely be back here if I'm down in that area again in the future. read more

I found this place to be very good, not great and I'll explain why. First off I arrived on a sat afternoon and it was very busy like it always is. I was able to get a table in 15 minutes. It is very loud inside and you do sit close to everyone so that's a negative. Their menu is vast, filled with many items from a broad spectrum of palates. Anyone should be able to find something to eat here. Our waitress was very polite and accommodating. Our food took a bit to come out but as I stated before they were busy. Everything was cooked perfectly and our orders were correct. The portion sizes are very big for what you pay. You will not leave hungry. My family and I really like going to the Metro Diner. I like it when I know I/we can go to a place, order up and no matter what...it's going to be delicious. Even if the food is "off" or "different from last time"...it's always good. Plus, it doesn't matter what time of the day you go, nor how busy it is...the food is always good. And with that said, the service is normally pretty good even when they are busy. The manager always seems to make his way around to make sure everything is good and/or to see if there is anything we need or want...very nice. Overall, I think the prices are fair and they have great specials. Dang...that summed everything up! But there are a few more things you should know. We have eaten several things on the menu. But I must say, the Meatloaf Plate just rocks! It is by far my favorite meal there. I highly recommend it! When it comes to breakfast...it's all good, but I personally recommend any eggs benedict. They have really great sweet tea too. Now for my personal quirky con's that I have to look past/deal with when I come here and must deduct a star: There are a few things that have happened when I've asked for a "to go" box that didn't sit well with me. One time when I asked for one I noticed a waitress drop boxes on the floor opening down and then put them back on the shelf to be used. Hello!...now they have the crud from the floor at the opening where you put food. Likewise, if they would have landed bottom down and put back in the stack the next set would have been really dirty inside once returned to the shelf. I did, indeed, tell our waitress about it and asked her to take our to go boxes from the bottom of the stack. I watched her go throw away the first few so that was good, but still...what don't we know or see? Our waitress said she'd speak to the other about it and apologized. On another occasion I watched the waitress put the boxes up under her arm (open) while she took an order and then put them on the table for someone to use...and they did. Boxes should be clean...landing on the floor where you put the food in or being put under someone's arm with Lord knows what on their clothes or arms facing either direction where you put in food is just nasty. Although these cases are rare...I watch them when I go in there and they've got me watching other places now too. The other quirky con I have is the ketchup. You know...I have never used the ketchup here. Oh, I have wanted it when I've had fries, but I ask for some type of dressing instead. Why? Because at a minimum it is empty or the cap is just filthy. At the worst, there is both. Well, I have seen both (see pics). Whoever clears the table should really check the bottle (to include the hot sauce) to see if it's full and/or gross. I really hate the idea of my quirky con's taking up so much space on this review when the food, service and sweet tea is so good. But I feel you just need to be aware. Lastly, you know me...I like to mention when a military or uniformed discount is offered and they do with proper ID. We certainly appreciate that very much. read more

The place was packed the morning we decided to have breakfast here. We had to wait for a table. Once seated the friendly waitress gave us our menus and coffee. There are specials written on a chalk board in a couple of locations in the restaurant. It was a very loud and almost chaotic atmosphere. Not relaxing at all. When our food came it wasn't anything spectacular or amazing. In fact my eggs were a little cool and the whites were runny. Not the way I enjoy my poached eggs. We all took a vote and decided the coffee didn't taste good. Very weak but at least it was hot. Two out of three of us enjoyed our breakfast choices. It's a good location in a plaza with plenty of free parking. A good choice for large groups I would imagine. Close enough to downtown. I saw a lot of locals eating here. Came to Metro Diner on a mini vacation for breakfast. We only stayed in St Aug overnight, so where we went for breakfast was kind of important to me. We yelped for a while before deciding on this establishment. GREAT choice. Several times my partner and I commented, unprovoked, about how lively and friendly the atmosphere was. It was bright, cheery, the staff all seemed fairly happy and got along with each other. They have Christmas decorations up right now, and are playing some easy holiday music. This is to say nothing of the FOOD which was spot on! I was starving, so I got one of those breakfast plates that comes with everything. It was all delicious! Large portions, so prepare for that. But all so tasty. My bill was $13 and it was extremely worth it. (They also have delicious mimosas.) To sum it up, this place is a win. If you're looking for good food and to recharge in a really nice atmosphere, come here! read more

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful about recommendations and order substitutions. The food was excellent, as was the service. We actually ate here twice during our stay. We arrived here on Tuesday the 2nd of January..the place was hoping! The menu was large and the selection is big! Got a seat for two and we were attended to fairly quickly. We ordered THE BISSELL BREAKFAST: Two eggs, bacon, toast, cheesy grits, and a short stack of BLUEBERRY pancakes...the second order was avocado veggie wrap that is served with fries. We got both orders and noticed that the pancake were just regular ones not the blueberry we requested..dish went back and it took awhile for them to replace them. Eating the avocado veggie wrap I notice after few bites that there was NO AVOCADO in the AVOCADO wrap! I sent that back and waited some more..by now the grits were cold and so were the fries and we are just not pleased especially with how long it took to replace both orders..I get the wrap back and you literally have to hunt for the avocado..shit load of spinach and jalapeños tho! They adjust the wrap price off of the check and that was it. The manager never made it to our table. read more

You are not going to leave hungry! I had the San Francisco Benedict and hubby has chipped beef over hash browns. Both were great but we couldn't finish! I added peppers to my hash browns, wish they had of been Incorporated while cooking but still good. We sat outside, it was 85°, it wasn't bad, good shade but I think any hotter it might not have been fun. We could have sat inside but when ask we said "whichever is faster". Service was fast and good and I loved that all the servers worked together. We ask for water when the person brought our meal, she didn't just go tell our waitress, she brought it. Salty perfection on a plate! We all then shared a few fried chicken and waffle dishes. Oh damn gurl! I started munching on the crispy chicken. It was to die for. Crispy beyond believe and juicy chicken wrapped into every bite. Don't forget to try the syrup hot sauce concoction, it's seriously delicious. I don't mind waiting for delicious food so a 20 minute wait was typical. Rather busy for a Saturday, especially at 11 am. This is my second time going to this spot since it is an hour away. Anyways, my only complaint was that I specifically asked for onions in my hash browns and extra crispy, but the onions ended up in my eggs Benedict and my hash browns were cooked normal. Also, had to send back half the chick that came with the chicken and waffles since Luke asked for all white meat and the waitress forgot to write it down, though she was quick to admit she remembers him asking and was quick to accommodate. We had a fantastic breakfast with griddled food that didn't upset the tummy later. We often find restaurants that use oils and Pam instead of butter makes us regret breakfast later.. this place had great service and great food that didn't do us dirty later. The only criticism I have is that their coffee is very watery and weak and you will need to purchase a coffee elsewhere for your coffee fix as their's is coffee flavored water. I still think they deserved 5 stars, so just keep the coffee issue in mind. read more
