We stopped in for breakfast on October 6th at about 10 a.m. it was very busy but the diner is well staffed to handle the business and our meal flowed smoothly. We both had the Sandy Beaches eggs Benedict, chalked in as a special, and really liked that. My wife thought the hollandaise was too sweet; I didn't get that sweetness but thought maybe rather a touch of cayenne would be better. I had a side of grits, perfectly cooked. Came here based on star reviews and the fact they had a reuben. It was a quick and easy stop, but past that I don't know that there would be anything to bring me back (except maybe the chicken and waffles, as that looked promising). The reuben was edible, but as far as reubens go was just ok. The dressing was too sweet, the sauerkraut was bland, and the meat was meh. The side if mac n cheese was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Service was quick and sitting at the bar top I got a free show of the open air kitchen staff and their antics. One of the ABSOLUTE BEST DINERS I have ever been to. HANDS DOWN!!!! METRO DINER YOU GUYS ARE SOOO GOOOOOD!! Strawberry butter...Yes that's right, strawberry butter! It was really good, I wish I ended up having more. We order a lot of food, I got the fruity waffle, a side of scrambled eggs and some toast. Everything was so fresh, the waffle was crisp to perfection. The service was fantastic, Donna was a gem. We waited for about 20mins we did have a party of 9 so it was okay, they were nice enough to accommodate us. I don't know what else to say. Look at my pictures. Considering all the great reviews, I decided to try this place for the first time. This is mainly about the food, and I also want to mention It takes a lot for me to feel strongly enough to write a 1 star review. We started off with water, mimosas, and choco milk. One of our mimosas came back with several black specs inside the drink; No problem, we exchanged it for a clean one, although not the greatest first impression. Typically when you're very hungry, you'll eat almost anything - However, I couldn't hardly eat anything on my plate here. I was forcing the food down just because I was hungry. More specifically, the hash browns were toasted on the outside, and uncooked on the inside. Eggs benedict had a very strong, unpleasant flavor that I am not used to with eggs benedict. There was no flavor in any of the food. Coming from Los Angeles I may have a bit high standards for food, but I am not very picky at all. I really wanted to like this place, and the people here seemed nice, but the food was just out right awful! If you're vacationing here, just consider skipping this place. read more

After finally getting our drinks we noticed there was literally stuff floating in the cups. we had five drinks and two of them didn't have stuff floating inside. now for the food, it was not cooked all the way though and burnt on the outside. do not get the hash browns, if you want some take yourself to waffle house because they know how to actually make them. overall the experience was not the greatest and i would not recommend this place. if you feel the need to go, i strongly suggest not getting any breakfast food. the price did not reflect the quality of food. over $40 for trash worthy food. i paid the restaurant to throw my food in the trash. read more

This was the second time I'd been to the Metro Diner, the first time having been about a week after it opened several years ago. I arrived as a single at 8:15 on this Saturday morning and walked immediately to the counter. I like to sit at counters in diners for two reasons: The service is usually just a little faster, and I enjoy listening to the head fry cook yell (softly) orders to the servers. The short-order argot is an enjoyable challenge to decrypt ("a runner" and "in the window"). The Western omelet that I had with hash browns and dry wheat toast was excellent. My only suggestion is that management replace the backless stools with backed versions. They'd be a lot more comfortable for us octogenarians. read more

4.5 Stars!!! Our First visit to St. Augustine today and we just drove for 5 ours and so we were ready for some breakfast!!! I searched for "chicken and waffles" and Metro Diner popped out! From the jump, I knew this was the place to be because it's located in a strip mall and that means we can park anywhere for free! We were lucky to find an empty space right at the front. Inside, the place smelled divine and was bustling with the typical Sunday morning crowed. It was packed! Luckily, a table for two was available in like 5 mins. There's a huge dining area, a few seats at the counter and some at the outdoor patio. The decor is simple, the menu have soooo many options there is sure something for everyone. The tables are little crowded but overall, it works. Love the picture with Guy Fieri on the walls and the rest rooms where clean. The Food: I ordered the chicken and waffles and the kids platter. It didn't take long for everything to arrive. Nommm! But I was surprised to see how dark the fried chicken came out. In my mind, either the oil was already dirty at this time or that it was overcooked/burned to death. Fried chicken should be golden brown and that was what I saw when I looked up their menu. After peeling the burnt battered skin off, I found that the chicken was still juicy, thank goodness! But the top layer of the white meat was tough because it was burnt. So my son and I shared it. Now for the strawberry butter on atop those waffles...they need a moment! They need to can it like Reddi Whip so that I can carry it around!!! It was so creamy and strawberr-y on top of the waffles, they didn't even need the syrup. So my son's platter came with an egg, bacon, toast, grits and a drink. It arrived with potatoes but with no grits. Our server Ms. Mandy made sure we got it. Later, a gray-haired gentleman stopped by our table to asked if everything was ok. And I said yes, and expressed how the chicken looked a bit dark. He was apologetic and asked if we wanted another piece, and as expected my child obliged. So I thought that was very nice since a nice portion of our order did get peeled off. Side note: It's really nice when managers or anyone do that, ask if everything was ok, because I don't know how many times we were less than pleased with our meals/situation and we don't say anything because of fear or offending anyone or worst yet...getting your food spat at and served to you. Overall, it was a good experience. It's a busy spot and they certainly have a lot of manpower to pull it off. I hope I can come back someday. read more

We are here four times in a two year period when visiting St Augustine and every time the food was great. Only had mediocre service once, today. Our waitress just kinda disappeared after bringing our food even though I saw her many times by the soda machine drinking water and walking to the back. Maybe she was just having an off day. No big deal. We will come back because the other times were great. Service was great before. The food is always good, clean restaurant and tables and it's not loud in there. The fish and chips and the French dip are great! My husband loves the breakfast foods. Kevin our waiter was by far the best in Florida!! He was on point, attentive and very kind! The food is off the chain delicious, the best chicken and waffles in Florida! The eggs Benedict was savory and they give you an option to add toppings on your hash browns! Our kid is very picky and he was calling it the best restaurant in town and he is only 6! This says a lot coming from him! All our kids enjoyed the food, even the egg sandwiches! 5 star's galore for this diner! I don't even like diners, and this little place is spot on! They text you when your table is ready and you can see how many people are waiting ahead of you. The food was SO Delicious! My family saw this place as we were coming into town but since it wasn't walking distance from our airbnb or the historic district, we saved our visit for our last morning (monday the 29th of August). We noticed the host was wearing sweatpants and seemed put out that we asked for the greasy seats to be cleaned. Our server, Jessica, came up and asked what we wanted but never welcomed us or even smiled. I asked for waters with no lemon and specified due to an allergy and she brought my water with lemon. When she brought it back, I couldn't tell if she really changed the water or just pulled out the lemon due to a lack of any kind of remorse over messing up an allergy issue. We ordered anyway and got our food severely over overcooked. Since we were in a hurry and our server couldn't be bothered checking on us when it came, I managed to finish my entire breakfast and was well into trying to convince my 4 yr old to eat what was put in front of him before she finally showed up to ask how things were. I did not get a refill on my coffee and she didn't bother to ask until we were ready to leave. If we didn't have such a long drive home, we would have left after the rocky start... now, my husband wishes we had. His stomach was upset for most of the day... I would love to say it was only our server and the host but the cooks sent out charcoal and called it bacon and as we looked around, we only saw one server smile while we were there. Don't get sucked in by the Yelp ad. Food looks better than it tastes, like the Big Bear diner chain. We came in for the Monte Cristo. It was cold. Plastic cheese, tasteless coldcuts. Onion rings were not fully cooked so they steamed themselves soggy in the plate. Fried food has a half life, serve it hot, people love it but when it has cooled off it is wrong. This was wrong. Would not go back, even for the amazing looking fried chicken The supposedly "hot" Minorkin clam Chile was tasteless, clams were tough, served tepid. There are more consistent places. Im starting to think Yelp is a sham 4.5 stars? How? I was about to go over to the sushi place next door until I pulled up the reviews for Metro Diner. I read all these amazing reviews, and changed plans. What a mistake! Pretty much everything we ordered was a disappointment. First, EVERY single dish was way too salty. My taste buds had to fish through the salt to taste the rest of the flavors. The kids' each had chicken and waffles. Chicken was salty AND way over-cooked (dried out). My kids love fried chicken and are pretty much chicken connoisseurs. And neither of them finished even one piece of chicken. And too much breading. And how come no condiments for the KIDS chicken? Kids like sauce, any sauce. Speaking of too much breading, the fish and chips had too much breading, and it was so salty. My adult daughter likes fish and chips with malt vinegar (and she's probably not alone). But with all the salt, the vinegar would have taken it off the edge. My wife had the turkey plate and it looked great, but again too salty. I had the blackened steak quesadillas, and it too was salty. It wasn't blackened, but there was a lot of it. Still, it didnt taste mexican, southwest, or tex-mex. It was a generous portion of salty beef and cheese between salty (did they really salt the tortillas?) tortillas. So why the 2-stars? Our server seemed like a good guy. Maybe the substitute cook was in charge that evening and didn't know what he was doing, but this was just plain lousy food. Sorry, that's the truth. read more

Although this isn't the same "mom and pop" style diner I usually go for, as its a chain and the restaurants are fairly large, I'm happy to make an exception for Metro. The servers are always quick to greet and smile and are super attentive throughout dining. I also realized that a manager has checked on me at least once during every visit, just to make sure I was happy with my food and enjoying my time. Although I can't eat it anymore due to my discovered dairy allergy, they have one of the best biscuits and gravy dishes in town. I also highly recommend their breakfast burger and their corned beef hash. But last night I was enticed by a daily special and went totally off the menu for dinner.
