I dropped off a blush colored dress to be dyed black (I was told by the woman who runs the shop that other than the threading potentially not dyeing, it would be the best color to dye the dress). I was grateful for her advice and gladly paid $150 ($100 for the dye and $50 to rush the dress to be completed within 7 days) for a wedding. I went to pick up the dress 7 days later (Thursday), no one mentioned that the dress was bleeding and I was asked to leave a yelp review. Two hours later, I tried the dress on and it proceeded to bleed black dye on my skin. When I called Metro Dyeing, the woman who answered the phone told me this "never happens" and that I should "check the [Metro Dyeing] reviews on yelp." She said she was "heartbroken that this happened" and that her colleague would pick up the dress the following day (Friday) and work with the dye house to have the dress rinsed so it could potentially be ready that night. The following evening (Friday) - exactly 17 minutes before I was told someone would meet me with my dress - I got a call letting me know the dress, when tested against other fabric, dyed the other fabric black. Metro Dyeing said they could send me my dress (still bleeding) or they could continue to rinse it and I would need to get a different dress to wear for the wedding. Again, I was going to a wedding the following day...the bride was wearing a white dress. When I would hug her, I would be wearing something that could dye her wedding dress black. As I could not wear a dress that would potentially ruin my friend's wedding dress, I asked Metro Dyeing to please continue to rinse the dress until it was actually ready and requested a reimbursement of the rush fee. To be clear, I did not ask for a reimbursement for the dyeing of the dress, simply the cost I paid to have the dress completed in time for me to wear to the wedding. Metro Dyeing told me I would receive a call the next business day. When I did NOT receive a call from Metro Dyeing, I called the store and was told the phone lines were not working and that someone would call me back. No one from Metro Dyeing called me back that day so I followed up myself the following day. At that point I was told, there was no confirmed date available as to when I would be receiving my dress. And, there would be no reimbursement issued as "dress was ready but it was bleeding." I explained that I was taking notes on the call as I was confused as to how something could be "ready" and yet "was bleeding" and was told that the company owner said, "the dress was done and ready and the bleeding was outside of control" and "we didn't do anything negligent." At this point, I told the woman from Metro Dyeing that I wanted to have someone, anyone, call to tell me when the dress would be complete and requested again to have a refund on the rush fee. I also let her know that, per her first request to me the day I dropped the dress off - I would be posting on yelp about my experience. However, out of respect for her that I would not include her name. I also offered to wait 48 hours for the company to provide more information about where the dress is/when I will be receiving my dress; and any details about a reimbursement for the rush fee. The next day when I called to check in, Metro Dyeing told there would be no reimbursement on the rush fee as the job was "done on time, even with the bleeding" and that the owner said my heads up that I would be posting on yelp was "very threatening." I am also in a customer service business, I was by no means trying to threaten anyone. Rather, I was providing a heads up, from one customer service professional to another. At the time of posting, I have yet to receive the dress - or an update as to when I should expect to receive it - or reimbursement for a rush fee on a dress that I was not able to wear as it was still bleeding dye when I was told it was "done." read more

Metro Custom Dyeing saved the day! I bought a silk Miu Miu jacket which I wore only once and had inadvertently stained with toothpaste. Impatient I thought I could take care of the stain myself...after researching...I made several attempts to remove the stain...it only got progressively worse...I tried vinegar, hand washing, and the kiss of death...I used a spray stain remover...which removed the toothpaste and the dye from jacket. I figured I had no recourse but to scrap the jacket as a very expensive loss(value $1375)...and believe me I was bummed and so mad at myself. Then it hit me...I could have the jacket dyed...the thought pulling a DIY with RIT did cross my mind...but I learned my recent lesson...leave it to the professionals. I found Metro and they could not have been more professional. Cindy acknowledged receipt of my package and sent me a follow up email when the job was done. It took only a week. The jacket looks better than new! I am SO excited by their services, I am scouring through my wardrobe to see what else I can rejuvenate. If you invest in good clothes...their service is definitely worth considering if you have a piece that you can't bear to part with but needs to be refreshed or reinvented...Metro Custom Dyeing can do the job. read more

Honestly I don't really understand these extremely negative reviews. The Metro dyeing website is very, very clear about what types of fabrics do and do not dye well, and they have a detailed waiver that exempts them from responsibility if the customer makes a mistake identifying the fabric. I don't think this is a problem, just a way to cut losses. I am a masculine-of-center queer woman and I needed a dress shirt dyed to match the bridesmaid dresses for my sister's wedding. The shirt was expensive and the stakes were pretty high for the match being good, so obviously I was nervous about sending it off. But, 100% cotton, with a swatch, what could go wrong. Turns out nothing. Cindy got back to me confirming receipt of the shirt, and a few weeks later I got an email with tracking information for its return. When I put the swatch against it you could barely tell where one started and the other ended. It might have a had a tiny bit of shrinkage but I can barely tell. Thanks for a great job. I personally would never send polyester or a strange fabric they say doesn't dye well--why risk it? For wool, cotton, silk, etc, Metro is a great service. read more

Fantastic work and excellent customer service! I sent in a white linen suit to be dyed a shade of dark gray that matched the swatch that I sent in with the suit. After speaking with Cindy on the phone, I emailed my consent form and payment information and shipped the suit. Roughly ten days later, Cindy emailed me to inform me that my suit had been completed, and that they'd be shipping it out the next day and to expect a FedEx tracking number once it shipped. When I didn't receive the tracking number, I emailed Cindy late in the evening on Good Friday to inquire about it. Before she even had a chance to get back to me, I had the suit back the next morning, and it looked fantastic! Cindy emailed me back on the Monday after Easter to give me the tracking number and make sure the suit had been delivered as it had been showing in FedEx's system, and throughout the entire process, she was extremely helpful and courteous. This was the first time I'd ever had a garment professional dyed, and I'm extremely pleased with the results. I will absolutely use Metro Custom Dyeing again, and I've recommended them to friends and family members already. read more

I am so happy I stumbled onto Metro Dyeing. I was looking to have my wedding dress dyed black so that I could re-purpose it as an evening/cocktail dress. I couldn't find any businesses locally to do it and with only 9 days before a big event, I was getting nervous. I called Metro Dyeing and the woman on the phone was very nice and helpful. She explained how the different materials of my dress would take the color differently, risks of shrinkage, etc. etc. (their website also does a nice job of explaining these things). I felt comfortable with the fact that the silk would take the black color but the polyester lining would turn out silvery gray. I mailed them my dress overnight and they subsequently kept me up to date with their progress via email, including double-checking on the return delivery schedule. I received it two days before I left town and the dress looks fantastic! Even with the extra fee for expediting the dye service, this was still cheaper than buying a brand new dress and I love that my wedding gown gets an extended life. Thank you Cindy! read more

My fiance had purchased a vintage silk beaded jacket that she wanted to wear on our wedding day, however the jacket had a few stains throughout the fabric. We had the jacket professionally cleaned and the stains would not come out. We were advised to explore the possibility of sending the jacket off to get dyed. We stumbled across Metro Dyeing and decided to give them a call and see if they could help. We spoke to Cindy who was extremely helpful in explaining the process and our options. We had no doubt that these folks knew what they were talking about, so we sent our jacket off. Within a day of it arriving in New York, Cindy called me and informed me that they had received the jacket and briefed me on my options. We went ahead with the dyeing process and received the jacket back within a week or so. I had a great experience with Metro Custom Dyeing. I live in another city and found them in a Best of NY list in New York Magazine from a few years ago. I contacted the customer service team to inquire about the logistics of having my wedding dress dyed. They were responsive and informative, letting me know the best options for my dress and specific risks and uncertainties. For example, they let me know that black dye runs the least risk of damaging the fabric and that any thread made from polyester or other unnatural fibers would likely not take the dye well. I FedExed them my wedding dress and they examined it and called me to walk through my options and preferences. Around a week later, they FedExed the dress back to me in a beautiful, deep black color (as they had warned me, the thread did not take the dye well but this did not bother me at all, especially as I had been forewarned). I really appreciated their transparency and responsiveness and I love how my dress turned out. I would recommend them. read more

Great experience. I had a beautiful Armani watermelon color dress that I wore only twice. It got a black stain from cake icing. Could I imagine that a professional caterer uses an icing that stains?! Anyhow, after unsuccessfully dry cleaning it, my last hope to keep the dress was to dye it; nevertheless what I most loved in this dress was its color. After Metro Dyeing has explained their dyeing process, the risks, and possible outcomes, I conformed to dye it in black. Metro Dyeing did not make any promises they could not deliver. I was informed by email of the all stages the dress went through - from entering the dyeing process until when it would arrive in my house. I could not be more pleased with the results. The dress was made with two different fabrics and they kept their texture and appearance. It continues to be a beautiful dress that I plan to wear many occasions, but now in black. read more

Can't say enough regarding the customer service and product delivered! I'm in the Chicagoland area and needed a bridesmaid dress dyed a specific color for my daughters upcoming wedding. I purchased the dress in spring and didn't ever imagine that I would not be able to find anyplace between Indianapolis and Chicago to dye a dress. After many weeks of calling for recommendations and searching possible leads, I decided to call the few, out-of-state options showing on google, out of sheer desperation and lack of time. This is defintiely the best dye house I've worked with. I had white knit goods that I needed dyed super fast for a photo shoot. They were very imformative, the dye team handled the technical corespondence with such detailed knowledge and expertise, and most important the colors were true to my standards. I have been in the industry for years, I never had a dyer teach me about the different finishes on fabrics such as DWR, silicones, and optical. This team defintiely knows their stuff, and they are not secretive about it, they were so enthusiactic about teaching me. I wouldn't say they are cheap, but you get what you pay for. If you want quality and knowledge, this is the go to place. I have a new second job in house now and so far the lab dips were spot on. Excited to see the yardages! read more

I had a sample garment dyed here. The garment was a pair of cotton canvas pants that were dyed black and they turned out great! I will definitely be returning and feel confident having future garments dyed more specific colors. I was given a thorough explanation of the risks involved as there are many factors that can make the outcome unpredictable when dyeing something... and its pretty clear they know their stuff and want you to be happy with the final product. I just want to add, I read through a lot of the reviews, and of course there are going to be negative reviews for a company that provides a service where there can be unpredictable results on peoples personal property, so if you're still on the fence I would really take the lower ratings with a big grain of salt. read more

Metro Dyeing is very good. I am a new and satisfied customer. Great results and delivery. Before you take any complaints seriously you need to know a bit about the dyeing business. There is always potential uncertainty with personal preferences, and John Breining is willing to take on individual customers which, to most wholesale services, is a headache. If you send something - just prepare for the inevitable and be glad you went with them. If your garments don't come out exactly as you'd hoped, you can bet that Metro labored over them beyond the cost. Let them do their thing and accept as best effort, and you'll come out ahead. Metro Custom Dyeing dyed my daughter's maid of honor dress perfectly. The dress is 55% cotton/ 45% polyester lace over a 100% polyester sheath lining. The dress was originally white. Metro Dyeing was very clear about dyeing polyester. This fabric does not take a dye. The lace dyed beautifully to a blush pink which matched the swatch with 100% accuracy. The sheath lining stayed white as expected. The blush lace with the white under it looks stunning. The customer service was great! I will definitely use Metro Dyeing again. read more

I took a lace dress that needed to be dyed that had beading and some discoloration on the sleeves. Before agreeing to take the dress i was told that the discolored parts may come out darker than the rest of the dress and that the beading may be affected. Either fall off or discolored. Well not only did the dress itself turn out magnificent but the beading was not affected at all. They did a marvelous job and i highly recommend them for any dye job you might have. I sent a black stretch lace Badgley Mishka gown to be re-dyed when I found one side of it had become sun bleached. I received it yesterday and it looks amazing. For only $100 I have a new, couture gown. They FedExed it back to me in Florida, where it arrived on time, as scheduled.
