I came here during off hours and it was great! Service was quick and efficient. The waitress was quite knowledgeable about the menu and was able to give excellent suggestions. All 3 salsas were amazing and tasted delicious! None of them were super earthy and had their own individual flavors. I had the birria tacos and they were well made and the dipping sauce was just the right touch. The fajitas were cooked well and, again, tasted delicious and were well seasoned. Prices soaring sky-high, but alas, food quality's decided to take a nosedive. My kale salad seemed to have confused itself for a dessert, opting for a lavish drenching in sugar syrup instead of dressing. I left the whole shebang untouched, and the waitress just breezed by without batting an eyelid--clearly, untouched entrees must be the norm here. My coffee embarked on a leisurely half-hour journey to reach me, by which time my dessert was a distant memory. Again, the waitress seemed unfazed by this culinary time travel. The skinny margaritas? So tart, they could start a sour revolution. The food is great. The service is Meh. The drinks are awful. I was so glad when Mex reopened. They said they were closed for this massive renovation. Hmmm. Ok. If they say so. Don't get me wrong. There were some changes made while it was shut down. Some were poor choices - like , why do away with outdoor seating? Otherwise , the decor and vibe kind of feels the same. The food is good. If you want some decent Mexican in the area ok, cool. But , how are you going to have good Mexican and terrible cocktails. I mean terrible. They pre make all of the signature cocktails and they just taste bad. I'm not talking about strength or the pour , they just aren't good. They need to get some bartenders in there who know how to make drinks- starting with a margarita. Oh MEX how I would like to like you! And it doesn't happen again. I have been here at least four times before and after the renovation and I sincerely hope that this time it will be great. The decor is great plenty of light and greenery nicely set up furniture no complain there, onto the food well its a high priced Mexican wanna be food with no flavor or authentic Mexican presentation. Granted this is Bloomfield hills and not Mexican town, but $23 for 3 tacos is a bit stiff. Drinks are made well and presented nicely no complain there. Inside has a nice vibe. Service was a bit slow but it's expected being on a weekend during dinner time. The food was okay. We only liked the verde salsa, chips and elote. Nothing else stands out for me to come back. My partner says we would only come back for drinks and bar food. The side tables at the bar are also very tight We also felt rushed by the waitress and other staff giving our food. I understand it's a stressful environment for them to work in but as a customer I shouldn't feel stressed to eat there. Would recommend making a Resy or Open Table reservation. I loved the aesthetics and ambiance of Mex! It had 4 different seating experiences in the restaurant: bar, dinning space, outside, and second floor with great natural lighting. The staff was so friendly from the hostess who sat us to our waitress and food runners. They offered great customer service and made it a welcoming environment. The food was delicious and very filling! We started with frozen mango margaritas, fresh elote and classic chips & guacamole, birria tacos for the main dish, and finished with the Mex brownie sundae and Horchata. The Elote was the highlight of the meal for me. The birria tacos didn't come with the dipping sauce which was slightly disappointing since the pictures highlighted it but the meat was juicy and was still good by itself. Overall, Mex is a great restaurant for friends, family, a date or a girl's night out. Highly Recommend! read more

New look, same issues. They recently reopened after remodeling so the place looks clean and open - not necessarily that much better ambiance wise. The service however is just as subpar. I don't think it's the waitstaff - our waitress was nice - but everything takes a long time (scratch that, it takes a VERY VERY long time) - so I think they are very understaffed. First off, I loved the inside decor--so fun!--and I'm interested to see what they change/do when they renovate this spring! Second, HUGE PROPS to our AMAZING!! waiter, Michael! He was funny, fun, and super attentive. He said he loves what he does and it shows! He sold me on a Starburst (Monte Alban, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon, and whoa Nelly! That drink is dangerous--I could drink buckets of those!!! We tried the chips trio, which includes Mex salsa, guacamole, and salsa verde with house made chips. My husband and I ate our body weight in the chips--SO GOOD!!! And that salsa verde! For dinner: I had Carne Asada (prime hanger steak, salsa de semillas, salsa verde, roasted cremini mushrooms, asparagus, southwestern corn succotash --$34). Ok, loved the food pairings--meat, asparagus, mushrooms. My complaint was that the sauce they put over everything gets overpowering after a few bites. I wouldn't order it again. (This dish is the reason I gave 4 stars and not 5). Did I complain to the waiter? Nah, my fault for trying something that wasn't my cup of tea. My husband had the Shrimp & Sausage Alambre Skillet (Mexican crispy rice, bell pepper, onion, herbed cream sauce, southwestern corn succotash) which he LOVED. He said he'd definitely order next time we come back! We both LOVED that crispy rice (I'll be trying to figure out how to make that before our next taco night!) Came here for dinner with a friend who'd been before. They take reservations on Open Table, have a parking lot, and get good reviews. Sounds promising. Interior design is super cute. Ropes and picture frames, cool chandeliers. It's well done. Hot sauce wall is very cool. You choose your own. VERY limited menu if you are vegan. Things can be veganized, but read: they will happily remove all the meat and cheese and you will still pay too much for chips and lettuce. I ordered the guacamole and chips as my dinner because that was the "best of the worst". It was good, but not a great dinner. We ordered margaritas prior. Mine was the classic maybe and the other person in my party got a flavored one. She ordered two actually. Mine was very average and very expensive. If you're an omnivore or just going for a drink, stop in. This might be a one and done for me. read more

I came here for dinner last Saturday with a meet-up group. The restaurant parking situation is unique; make sure you are aware of the corners of both your car and other people's cars. Someone was parked waiting for a person right in front (though I actually think they were just being rude as then they left), as I tried to go around them someone else came flying around the corner from the back. No accident occurred but glares were thrown around. The restaurant has the ability to be open air which they were doing last Saturday night. There were some ceiling fans moving air but if it were a hot summer night, it would have been oppressive. This is the first and so far the only sit-down Mexican restaurant where they don't give you complementary chips and salsa. The food menu is very small whereas the drink menu is large. We all ordered our drinks and meals at the same time. Our drinks came out before the food which I guess is a good thing. I got a grapefruit margarita and chicken nachos with no lettuce. The drink was a bit bitter definitely not made with ruby red grapefruit but more of a white grapefruit. The food came out relatively shortly thereafter. My food was okay but a little on the mild side. Someone asked for salsa to added flavor to their meal. It got passed around and I wish I had added some to my meal. I asked for a to-go box as the nachos were huge. We got our bills relatively quickly and that's when the person who asked for the salsa found out that they were charged for it.... The nachos were definitely not good the next day which is weird because normally left over nachos are okay. I won't be back as there are better Mexican restaurants out there that are easier to get to and have way better food. read more

Moved out of the area a couple of years ago but was home to visit. Bragged to my girlfriend that she'd love Mex, I remembered it being a great spot. Sat at the bar, which was empty. Probably made things worse as we could hear arguments amongst the staff. Watched as a new bartender poured a glass of wine, only to be chastised by the Manager for the pour being too generous. Made another bar tender use measuring cups and transfer it to another glass. When the Manager was away, staff was complaining about him. Ordered a smothered burrito with shrimp. Came with steak. Was going to send it back but felt bad for the bartender (same that got in trouble for a generous pour). Looked later at the receipt, she got it right, kitchen screwed up. This is a great place. It is a very nice, modern and beautiful place for lunch, dinner or drinks. Some say the food is not authentic, but nonetheless; it is delicious and very well priced. Great ambiance, delicious margaritas, good service. However the food is subpar. We got the skinny margaritas which were amazing. We started with an appetizer of guac and the tuna. I loved the tuna and the guac was very fresh but needed salt. I got the tacos Americanos but I tried everyone's food and almost all of it had way too much cumin and it was overpowering. The tacos Americano tacos and with corn tortillas were very greasy and seasoned with way too much cumin and the rice was tasteless. The food also caused my boyfriend and I bad digestive issues afterwards but that's a personal problem. Overall I love the atmosphere and I'd come back for cocktails and apps but I wouldn't eat any of the entrees here again. read more

There are far better and much more affordable Mexican places to go in the area. We stopped in there tonight for a date night. They have just finished renovations, and I am not sure what they did made the place any better. It was so loud, I couldn't even hear what the waitress was saying to us and she was standing right next to me. I literally had to yell to have a conversation with my wife who was sitting right across the table from me. The food was decent but not for what the prices were. 24 dollars for 3 tacos is preposterous as is 16 dollars for guacamole that isn't even made table side. Go to places like camellias or El patio. Way better food, much more affordable prices. Stay away from this place, unless you want overpriced food and drinks and cliche trendy ambience. read more

I'm torn between 3 and 4 starts on this one but I decided to round up since it's not a chain and locally run to the best of my knowledge. For starters, growing up in the area this location actually used to be a big boy that I would have breakfast at sometimes in high school with friends. Eventually it closed and got torn down, and now we have Mex here instead. I've driven by it many times and thought about stopping in, but it was always on my way home from work and was to rushed to even think about stopping. The boyfriend drove by it recently and since we were both in the mood for Mexican, we thought we'd finally give it a shot. Overall, the place is a thumbs up. Great decor, well decorated, plenty of seating and the service was fabulous. But, a few things made me hesitate and I figured this was a good place to talk about it. First and foremost, the menu isn't huge, but adequate with selection. I'm a taco lady and I don't venture much outside of that unless something catches my eye. It's kind of my go to dish and how I judge a place since it's obviously a common dish and hard to screw up. The tacos themselves were really fabulous. We both had the same dish, and it was a hit. I got two tacos, rice and beans, date had 3 tacos, same sides. The salsa was not to terribly spicy, and we know the older farts of Michigan can't handle anything spicier than sour cream. (Anyone over 55 cannot handle spice, I swear. My parents included.) So, to have a place like this that does it slightly different with flair is a bonus for the area. The one thing that was initially a hit but I couldn't finish was the lime rice. At first I loved it, but then halfway through it I had enough and didn't want to finish it. I normally don't NOT eat rice, so that was weird. Date thought it was okay, but not in love with it either. Beans were good, no complaints there. Service was great, and our server did a really good job. Overall, we did like it here and I would return, but I think I'm more of a traditional Mexican food person. Love MEX! I was so sad when the Mex at Great Lakes Crossing shut down because this is where I would get my MEX fix. But visited this location over the holiday season and was not disappointed. Pleasantly surprised to see such a great happy hour menu. Happy Hour is M-F 2p-5p, not great hours though for those who work until 5p. The food and drink are at a great price though and there is no skimping on flavors with the happy hour menu. From what I remember too - you have to sit at the bar to get the happy hour. Our waitress/bartender was nice and attentive. Friendly and helpful. The decor is awesome and so fun with tons of bright colors. The skinny margarita was tasty and hit the spot. Ordered the chicken taquito, beef tacos, chicken quesadilla, chips and salsa, guac, and queso. So almost one of everything from the menu, but the prices being so cheap! Chicken taquitos were enjoyed by our group. Chicken quesadilla was apparently average. The vegetarian fajitas were disappointing and basically just a TON of onions and a few peppers. The bare minimum should be onions, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini. The corn tortillas I requested were somehow unevenly greased (why are they greased at all) and mostly stuck together. They were served on a regular plate, not a tortilla warmer. For a place that tries to be "upscale" in this bustling metro-Detroit food scene, looking nice is not enough. They recently renovated Mex It is really nice inside. The hostess greeted me when I walked in the door and was very friendly. The servers were complimentary and knowledgeable of the menu. I got the kale salad as my main meal with some grilled chicken on it. It wasn't as flavorful as I remember it to be. The Everything guacamole was good but personally I think I'll get the regular guacamole next time.
