Had lunch here today. My husband and I shared a combo plate and a few of the street tacos. Everythi g was edible,, nothing was good.. Pork burrito had hard Chinese of pork, Chile relleno was tasteless and boring, all of the street tacos were fi e, but u derwhelmong. Mostly tasted like corn tortilla. The food was excellent and the restaurant neat and clean with plenty of vegetarian options.

The view is wonderful, but just stop in for a soda or bottled beverage, and soak up the view. Cold, slightly stale, corn chips, and bland salsa started off the dining portion of this experience. My Hombre Burrito was a flour tortilla filled with refried beans that were ok, beef chunks that were fair, and covered in a bland red sauce and shredded cheddar cheese - not a Mexican white melting cheese. I left food on the table. Not delicious, and I think a frozen burrito would have tasted the same. read more

This was our 2nd visit here over the last few days. Restaurant is large, roomy and very comfortable. We sat on the patio the first time, had absolutely no u ssue with bugs...which is surprising considering you are right on the Wisconsin River. Fairly long wait to get a table despite being the only group coming in at the time. Waiter did not walk around the table to take orders just stood at the head of the table (we were a group of 8 at a long table which made it feel like we had to yell down the table for waiter to hear us). I had a great server named Magdalena. So sweet, and caring. I love how the atmosphere was! The view really makes a difference after living in the Chicagoland area. Spacious and clean. I read past reviews and they were so awful. But honestly this food was so great it doesn't compare to Taco Bell. The chicken was so juicy and well seasoned. Also the rice is the best Mexican rice I've had. I would recommend and of course be back. read more

For dinner I ordered the chicken tamales. They were unbelievable. They were a tad bit dry towards the outside (I added some salsa on top and it was perfect), but the inside was soft and the chicken was seasoned well. They came on a bed of rice, which was also very good. I'm not too sure about why they added shredded cheddar on the side. I would have preferred some shredded queso blanco or homemade cheese sauce, but it was delicious regardless. My wife and I are on a quick weekend trip to Wisconsin Dells just to get away for a little bit. On Saturday March 3rd, we went to the Mexicali Rose around 8pm for dinner. I'm not a big Yelp reviewer so I will keep it simple, The only great thing about it was our server Penny. She was clearly working harder than any of the other four people on the floor. That's right, five people (this includes the bartender/manager) on a Saturday night. It was all down hill from here. 1. Obviously understaffed so service was AWFUL. 2. Two of the servers, I'll call them Young Guy and Big Guy, clearly have never been trained on teamwork. They literally ONLY dealt with their own tables with zero regard for pre-bussing/bussing tables, greeting new guests, helping their MUCH busier teammates, or simply being aware of their surroundings. They literally were walking back and forth from the front to the back empty handed ALL night. even though at least eight tables were covered with dirty dishes. 3. At no point did anyone take control of the situation. It was a complete s-show. If the bartender was in fact the manager as well, she too needs training on multi-tasking, server training, and overall customer service. It's easy to say that they were under staffed and that is why it was so crazy in there. But the truth is they were simply under trained. They knew they were short staffed well before 8pm so I can't give them a pass for that one. They need to understand how to work together. If there are cameras in the restaurant, I would BEG the owners of Mexcali Rose to check the tape between 8-9pm and give me a call if you would like me to come down from Minneapolis to give these five employees basic server training. I'll do it for no charge just s no one has to witness what I witnessed last night. read more

I tried to give the management a chance to explain why my experience here was so terrible, so I wrote them a letter. I tried to explain that their unspiced salsa from a can wasn't fooling anyone. I tried to explain that when someone orders a chicken burrito that has no chicken in it, that's not okay. I tried to explain that every vegetable I ate that day was grossly soggy and obviously came from a can or a frozen bag. I tried to explain that a top-shelf margarita served in an 8-ounce martini glass overflowing with ice is not the way you serve any margarita ever, much less one you're charging downtown Chicago prices for. I tried to explain that the waitstaff was only wanly apologetic, and only after we complained. And never asked how we were doing, and seemed way more concerned about the check. I tried to explain that my group of 8 kept remembering throughout our visit to Wisconsin Dells how ripped off we felt from eating there, and how not a single person's meal was even adequate, and how we had to joke about it to make ourselves feel better. I wrote to them, but I never got a reply. And I see here on Yelp that I'm not the only one. Eat anywhere else. Anywhere. read more

Why am I giving a restaurant one star when the food was good and the service was okay? One word --- dishonesty! Read on... My wife and I ate here today and ordered their swordfish platter and margaritas. I was really enjoying the margarita and decided to have another one. Mind you, I had the upgraded version with PREMIUM tequila ($2 more). The 2nd one arrived and noticed immediately that the tequila was the rot gut version. Had it replaced immediately. The owner/bartender came out to apologize so I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt even though the wife told them, "You can't fool him by doing that. He knows his tequila!" When I paid the bill, I noticed that instead of adding $2 more, they added $5 more (additional $8 for the 2 drinks). Again, I confronted the owner and he gave me a cockamamie explanation that the "menu was wrong". He refunded my $8 overcharge anyway. Here's what i think, if like 90% of the population out there I did not complain, then they would have gotten away with this (like chances are, they have with others). When a diner sits down for a meal at a restaurant, he or she should not have to worry about being cheated! Good food or not! A pity.... The meal was good and the 1st margarita excellent. The waiter was friendly and attentive too. BUT we're not coming back here again--- even though this town is a definite stop on our way. read more

Bland. I'm pretty sure the salsa was actually marinara sauce. The carnitas were just unseasoned roast pork. The wait staff was fast and polite, but they need to take a serious look at finding out who robbed them of all their spices. I doubt the chef even knows what paprika or cumin is. My family and I ate there this past weekend (7-8-12) and I must say the food is HORRIBLE!!! The owner/manager should be ashamed of themselves calling this place Authentic!! We ordered 5 different platters and they all were AWFUL!!! We would've enjoyed a better meal at Taco Bell and would have saved a lot of money. Even your chips and salsa were nasty! I do not know when this restaurant fell off, but it managed to. It was slightly dirty, with used napkins on the floor and stickiness abounding! Our meals were "oookay." But my turquoise margarita was the true winner. It was busy when we arrived and our waitress was polite but slightly flustered. Even when things died down, she and the kitchen were moving as slow as molasses... After a long day of sun and waterslides, a telling part of the service was the fact that I managed to fall asleep while waiting for our food. The margarita was great wasn't overly powered with mix like most other places. The salsa was good and the chili relleno was great my other half had the carnitas chimi and loved it! Upon walking into this place for the very first time, and I've been to the Dells quite a bit over the years, we witnessed an entire meal fall to the floor and shatter all of the plates before we were even seated. I'm shocked at the reviews here because in person ,people seem too be a fan of this place. We got several recommendations. Happy hour is a rip off though. $3 for 1 taco? Psssshh. I'm from Chicago, when it comes to food, go hard or go home. But you CAN NOT go wrong with the $3 margaritas. No skimping on the tequila here. We shared the Nacho grande appetizer and was too full to try anything else. All the people around us ordered food and it looked so delicious. The service was great and satisfactory. We went around 4pm, it was a nice crowd, but service was fast. Even people that ordered after us had their food in a timely manner. We sat on the patio with the nice view of Lake Delton. I'm very pleased and will come back whenever I'm in the Dells. We actually thought about going back that same night. Can't speak on the overall restaurant until I try and see more. read more

The steak fajitas had some sort of beef roast and not flank or strip steak, and it was flavorless. I don't even think they salted it. The service was poor as well - slow and the server failed to bring several items to our table. My wife and I were unimpressed with all of our meals in the Dells, but this one was seriously bad. My family and I came to this place a couple of years ago and this still stands as the WORST "Mexican restaurant" (it shouldn't even be allowed to call it's self "Mexican") we've ever encountered! A shadow of its formerly-great self when they were located in Lake Delton. There's a great view if you can get a spot by the right windows, or outside by the water if it's not 100 degrees out. The food: similar to food from a small-town Mexican cafe run by Norwegians. This is a Must eat location when in The Dell's! The location lures you in and quite honestly I didn't have high hopes for this place after reading some of the reviews. Everything was awesome! I had the combination platter which was fantastic! My wife had Enchaladas , Daughter and son in law had fish tacos and taco salad which they loved. We even had a fast acting waitress who 'sprung to attention" while noticing my grandson choking on tortilla chips as he was eating them sooo fast! I think he could have eaten two baskets if we let him! Great Local restaurant and very reasonable prices , oh and yes "Margareta's " are fantastic! When I just looked this place up, I was a little shocked by the low rating. It's not perfect by any stretch but anyway. It's in a nice location and the food is good. The chips and salsa were very good and the portion sizes were exactly what we needed after a long day out and about. The service was just acceptable, any slower and I'd have docked another 0.5 star. The problem was that after the meal, the location became a problem. There were more flies of some kind around the outside of place (due to being next to almost stagnant water) than I care to ever see again. You could not get back to the car without a whole bucketload making it inside as well. Not good. It's not quite the restautant's fault but just fyi on those later summer nights.... read more
