Mexicali Rose staff and management are not taking appropriate COVID precautions for safety and are disobeying the Wisconsin mask mandate. Our server had her mask below her nose and the person that brought us our food had no mask. He jokingly told us he "was not afraid of COVID." We also saw another server with her mask on her chin and the manager on duty had no mask. When I went to respectfully discuss my concerns with her, she was dismissive and came out several minutes layer to the patio without a mask again, demonstrating she did not value my input and understand the importance of masks or the legal mandate. There is risk going to any restaurant, but we all need to do our best to take care of each other. Masks are mandated in all enclosed spaces (including outdoor dining), so this behavior is illegal. I grew up in the Dells area, and my parents used to enjoy going to their old location in Lake Delton (between Storybook Gardens and Noah's Ark - burned down in the 90s I believe), so my wife and I decided to give them a try now as tourists based on that and the fact that I was feeling like Mexican and it was a beautiful day for riverfront dining. We were seated almost immediately and outside! Our waitress was very nice and accommodating for us and our three sometimes-ill-behaved and tired children (5, 3, and 6m). Chips and salsa and drinks were out fast as was our appetizer (Chili con queso, which was good...not quite the queso blanco you get at most Mexican places....not bad, just different. I am a self professed connoisseur of queso and make it frequently at home.) My wife ordered the carnitas fajitas. She said they were good. Large portion, ended up taking some home with us. She is very critical on restaurant food, so this is important. I had the chimichanga with ground beef. This too was good. Kids had the kids meals which were run of the mill kids meal fare. Of course they ate little which is normal, and ended up taking most of it with us. The view was great and the weather perfect. I grew up in the Dells so I know the view well but nevertheless it was great to enjoy with supper. The whole place is well decorated and the patio especially with its floral baskets. We got there early so there was no wait. Overall the food was run of the mill Mexican. The best thing this place has going for it is the riverfront view. We'll be back. read more

Loved the Margs and the view of the river out back. It's a great patio to be on, especially on a summer night. Also, if you like Mexican food, this is a great place in the Dells to eat some. I've been wanting to try this place for the last 2 times we been in the Dells. So this pass weekend we were there and I got the chance. It was HORRIBLE! The food and our waiter! The salsa tasted like canned diced tomatoes, no onion, cilantro or anything. Just plain tomatoes! I ordered the steak taco combo plate, it was ground beef! They ground all their steak meat which I don't like at all and the rice was flavorless. Their portion size is SMALL for the price. I will never recommend this place to anybody! He seemed to have been seated multiple sections, inside and out, and was definitely running his butt off. The bad: The food. Granted, it's the Dells, but this was one of the worst examples of flavorless yet expensive "Mexican" I've ever seen. Wife had steak tacos, which she said were tolerable. For a Mexican spot in the Dells this place was decent. I ordered the taco dinner, that came with the choices of steak, carnitas, chicken or beef. I had the steak & carnitas.....the steak was tough and it was marintated in something that made it tast sweet. NOT GOOD! However, the carnitas were AWESOME!!! When in the Dells eat where the locals eat? Honestly, I couldn't tell you if the locals eat here, but after passing through the Dells dozens of times and always seeing Mexicali Rose on the corner, we decided that we should have lunch there this weekend. Our Waitress, Roza (from two hours by plane SE of Moscow, Russia), was cheerful AND, bonus - knew what "gluten-free" was. The tortilla chips served on the table are gluten free, the regular salsa is... salsa, I thought it was very mild. The "hotter" salsa, is indeed, hot. I ordered the Carnitas, which is served with warm corn tortillas, and my husband ordered the Chimichanga. Neither of us were disappointed with our choices for food or drink, a classic margarita for me (very close to what they make at Pancho's Backyard in Cozumel, Mex) and a blended strawberry for the Mister. He also enjoyed a fried ice cream for dessert, which was definitely a 2-4 person dessert: chocolate chip ice cream covered in a really thick coating of chocolate chip cookie crust, plus the sugared, fried flour tortilla under, whipped cream and a cherry on top... and hot fudge. The patio was pleasant despite the heat and humidity and the view was decent despite it being half parking lot. I'd eat here again, but hope that they'll update their menu with the gluten free options clearly marked and maybe some gazpacho and flan added. read more

If you want authentic Mexican food this is not the place to go. This is like a pricier version of Taco Bell. Only good thing was that The service was great. He was a Very polite waiter. The piña colada was very good but tasted like a virgin piña colada. But The food was not great at all. The beans taste like they just came out of a can and just microwaved. Positives was that the food was fairly tasty. Weather was nice to enjoy the patio view. Negatives were that once seated and drinks served, it was more than 45 minutes until we saw our server again. We had ordered guacamole which was not served with the chips. Waitstaff then informed there was an issue in the kitchen and would be a while longer for our food. We waited. Food finally came around the 1.5 hr mark. Never had drinks refilled or checked again. We had asked for salsa with the lunch which never came. We had to flag someone down to get a box to go. We were told we were to get fried ice cream as a complimentary dessert which would have been nice but that never came or was mentioned again so more than 2 hours into our adventure, we departed. We went to this horrible place last year with my family. Keep in mind we are a Mexican Family 100%! I ordered some tacos and my husband ordered some shrimp fajitas. The taco tortillas were hard and tasteless and the meat super hard. Also the meat in the tacos instead of being what i ordered it was completely different. The "fajitas" my husband ordered instead of being shrimp fajitas they should be called onion fajitas because they only gave him like 4 or five shrimp. We've been going to this restaurant since it opened at the original location for what must be 30 years and has been a staple every Dells trip we've taken. We almost didn't go there due to some recent reviews but am happy to report we went and had a great dinner with a great view as always. In the Dells there are very few Mexican restaurants and none with a better view. Our margaritas, food and service was great. Our kids enjoyed their food as well. Bad chips, bad salsa, bad flavor all around... all this bad piled into the plate in portions that are way too big. It's a while lot of bad. But, this being a tourist town in Wisconsin, I honestly did not expect it to be more than it is. While the sign outside touts "Chicago Tribune says 'a must!' what is left out is that this was written in 1993, and states that the patio is a must because you might see bungee jumpers... which I don't think is even there anymore. Below average American Mexican Restaurant. Nothing spectacular. We went on a weeknight and it wasn't busy at all. Took a minute for them to notice we were there and seat us. Wasn't too impressed by the menu, but also not an overwhelming amount of options like lots of Mexican restaurants. The chips and salsa that they give you before the food were not that good. We went here in 2015 and it was pretty good. We were there last week 06/19, and it was absolutely horrible! I should have known because the parking lot was empty (a surefire way to know if food is good at an establishment or not) We wanted to sit outside, but the stench from the river was overpowering. There is tons of some kind of yellowish white scum floating on the river that will kill your appetite in a heartbeat on top of the smell. But my husband had his heart set on going there for memories sake, and was looking forward to Mexican food. This was the worse Mexican food / slop I have ever eaten. The rice was plain, no taste, nothing in it. The beans tasted like canned chili with big chunky mushy beans, not traditional refried beans. My tacos were cold unwarmed flour tortillas (I asked for hard shell), like right out of the package you would get at the grocery store. Very little meat, lots of cold lettuce and tomato. My husband had enchiladas. The white shredded cheese on top was not even melted. He didn't say anything until I said, I can't eat this . . . then he said that yes, it was horrible. This food was not fit for a dog. The waiter also forgot napkins, cutlery, and didn't seem to know the menu at all. He couldn't explain what anything was. The bill was $40. We should have complained, and at least got part of our money back since we barely touched anything (I ate one taco), but my husband doesn't like to make a scene, so we just got the hell out of there. Go to Taco Bell on Rt 12. It would have been 100% better. If I could have given it 0 stars, I would have. If you want a good burger though, go to Monk's Bar & Grill downtown by all the souvenir shops. read more

Now that the good has been mentioned, here's the not-so-good. 1) The waiter must have been half deaf as we had to repeat portions of our order multiple times. 2) The service was slow, and I mean really slow (8 minutes for a side of sour cream?) and the restaurant was about 1/3 full. 3) The fajitas were bland, unlike any fajitas I have had before. 4) The "hot" salsa was wimpier than the stuff we buy at the store. 5) The prices were on the high end of average and definitely NOT worth it. As we waited for our meal we ate the chips and salsa and asked for more salsa. The waiter brings 1 water, 1 lemonade and something that looked like tea. We told him we no longer wanted the margaritas and mentioned the terrible service. It was excuse after excuse. Then I noticed my taco salad had zero meat in it! The assistant manager brings the kids meal with beef and cheese and lettuce on the taco and rice and beans after we literally told him 5 minutes ago what the order was. Heading home after being in the Madison area we drove through the Dells looking for a decent place for dinner. Everywhere had full parking lots until we came to Mexicali Rose. I worried that would be an indication of the food and service but we were hungry and my daughter was requesting tacos. We walked in and were greeted by a friendly member of the staff who promptly seated us. Someone came to take our drink order and because we were trying to hurry along, we also ordered our food. We both ordered sodas along with an order of guacamole, a plate of three ground beef tacos w/rice and the shrimp fajitas. This building is huge and has room to seat many people. It looked as if they were only using the front dining area and bar. The rest of the restaurant was empty which you had to walk all the way through to get to the bathroom - which was very cold, old and borderline dirty. Our food was fine - just fine. Sour cream had to be ordered extra for the fajitas and you only got 3 VERY small tortilla shells with your meal. My daughter said the tacos and rice were fine. Our meal was approximately $40 without tip for two meals, guacamole and two sodas. If you are planning to eat at the Dells on a Saturday, be prepared to wait, make reservations if you're going somewhere good or stop in at the Mexicali Rose if your expectations aren't too high! read more
