Okay, it's a drive thru mexican joint. But... don't be fooled! It's the closest thing to "authentic" I think I've found around these parts. Cheap, a bit on the greasy side... but OH so yummy! I pulled into Mexican express on a whim while trying to decide what to eat in the big town of Reedsport, and boy am I glad I did! The enchilada plate was delicious, nothing over the top, but just darn good in its simplicity. The salsa was also really good, but do wish it came with chips so I could have enjoyed more of it! My boyfriend got the shredded steak burrito and it was massive but extremely messy and could have been made with a little more care which is why I did not give 5 stars. Don't judge the book by it's cover is defiantly the words I would use to describe this quick stop! We almost turned around when we pulled in the drive through! There were so many good reviews on this place that I told my dad we HAD to go! After we ordered what we wanted, the man who was working made the food after we ordered it! We didn't want to stay in the car, so we sat at a picnic table that was right outside! The man even walked out to make sure very thing was alright! My friend in Bandon told me to stop by at the Mexican Express on my way through Reedsport. I ordered the green chile verde tostada. Tortillas were crisp and the chili verde favorable. Yes, the place looks a little rough driving up (drive up menu in particular) but the food is incredible! Very reasonably priced and the burritos are HUGE! I think I've had about everything on the menu and no complaints with any other them. I think the veggie burrito is my favorite. Owner Gustavo is planning to retire and move back to Mexico within the next year, so this little hut should be on everyone's priority list when driving thru Reedsport because there is nothing like it around here! The only thing that is a hassle occasionally is the wait. Nothing is pre-made so it takes him a bit to whip everything up. If you're 3 cars deep in the drive thru, you may be waiting a while- Small price to pay if you ask me! *Tip* Call in your order and when you get there, approach the walk up window and you'll get your order much faster. read more

Update: I reviewed in 2013, and again in 2014) An immigrant success story, Gus came to the Reedsport area and took over this "shack", that had many short earlier lives selling Hamburgers, and even one selling Coney Dogs. Nobody could make a go of it. Then 'Gus' took it over. I was told Gus previously worked at Aztlan Mexican Restaurant right across the street. I spent my youth in Southern California (also where I got my Chef training and degrees) and some folks consider CA to be a State of Mexico! There are over 76,000 restaurants in the state, which employ 1.5 Million people. A full 1/3rd of all the state's restaurants are in Los Angeles County! While LA is not exactly a "Restaurant Town", it is a veritable Cornucopia of ethnically diversity that is represented by their restaurants. And Mexican Restaurants has to be the most popular. I do miss that diversity, but I don't miss the pollution, traffic, lines and congestion that all cities suffer. For years Gus ran his "window" operation and achieve his goal; a nest egg that could allow him to go back home and buy his family a Ranchito, with enough left over to support him the rest of his life. Over my working years I've met dozens of Latinos who expressed the same thing. It's a common goal: many don't come to the USA to become a citizen and assimilate, they expressed a desire to go home, a success in the eyes of their family, friends and neighbors. Their concept of success is not the same as ours. An unpainted cement block house and a dirt floor can be fine. They don't dream of Ferraris as opposed to a serviceable truck. This is not to say they are hayseeds or dummies - No! Far from it! Ingenious is more like it! Practical, Humble, Religious and devoted to their family & children. They are good people! The Menu that Gus had was geared to 'American tastes'. And served in large sizes. For example most burritos boast copious amounts of beans and rice, with 'just' adequate amounts of means and/or cheese. It's a common restaurant move to give you more of the inexpensive food, while cutting back of the more costly ingredients. Americans expect a full plate and eat without much fanfare, whereas other cultures like Europe or certain Asian cultures turn the dining experience into an art form; an experience to be savored and enjoyed, whereas we Americans invented "Fast Food"! While Gus' menu wasn't what I would consider a golden "hole in the wall", but many late dinners for us were picked up there before he closed up. I'd ask for less salt, less or no rice. I felt as if Gus understood the words but probably was puzzled by the silly gringo eating habits! Not that long ago, Gus left and got his Ranchito, back home, leaving the business to a nephew(?), which he runs with help from a few good fiends. They're young, ambitious and energetic. A great combo for a drive thru, take out Restaurant. So give them lots of feedback, so they know what you like & don't like, AND they can be successful - so they can send lots & lots of money home to Gus & the family! read more

This place is good however it is far from authentic. But I have to say they do have the perfect rice! The people who work here are friendly but it does take a little too long for a drive thru. The food was good to say the least but I wish they would add a little bag of chips. Coming from California that is usually what we expect but at least I had some chips at home. read more

WHOA, I was looking around and saw the reviews I had to try. I had the chicken tostada which was awesome I never had such good Mexican seasoned chicken. Also the avocado was very fresh I usually hate solid avocado but it was smashed into the tostada really well and fresh. I would recommend calling first. This place has ok food, a notch above Taco time. But the complete rudeness of the owner/operator isn't worth it. I used to stop in relatively frequently and always assumed he was having a bad day. Mexican Express is a tiny little drive-thru Mexican food hut located in Reedsport, Oregon. It's a little bit strange, but can be a good place to get huge, filling burritos to go at reasonable prices. Good menu choices include the Machaca Beef burrito, Carne Asada burrito, Bean & Cheese burrito, and the rare, occasionally-available Pork Verde burrito! There are several strange things about this place that you need to know: as it has said on the sign for years, "Speaker Broken--Order at Window." Be prepared to wait--this place is popular with locals, and there is often a line of cars and/or walk-up customers waiting. However, sometimes the owner will pop out from the back door to shout, "Hey there--what would you like?" so he can get started preparing your food. Don't be alarmed--be ready for it, just in case it happens--they just want to get your food going for you a bit quicker. Maybe someday they'll get that speaker fixed. Maybe someday I'll get their phone number and call in my order ahead of time. Also, it seems like everytime we go, they have just run out of the Pork Verde--happens to us so often we thought it was just on the menu as a cruel joke, but we finally got to have it recently and it was good. read more
