Had dinner with a cousin here last night. Was early evening and easy to get a table. Pretty restaurant, but the music was very loud. Server was sweet. The sina colada is delicious (non-alcoholic coconut water beverage). I had the chicken mole enchiladas. She warned me the mole was on the sweeter side and spicy. She was right! Was pretty good. Not so spicy I couldn't eat it, but had quite a kick. If you don't like spicy food don't order it. Mole was a little sweet for my taste, but overall it was good mole. My cousin got carne asada fajitas, med rare, and they were fantastic! Neither one of us much cared of the cilantro lime rice. Black beans were blah. The guacamole was OK, a little heavy on the lime juice. I would go back and try it again. It was overall good quality for sure. Next time I'll get fajitas! If you park in the parking garage underneath they will validate your parking. I unfortunately did not realize I had parked in that parking garage because I'm not familiar with the area and I had to pay $25 for parking. Look Mexican sugar quality of food is amazing. Everything is fresh and homemade. First the tortilla soup we had was awesome. Full of flavor. Elote amazing. Tastes how I like it. Good balance of mayo, cheese, lime, hot sauce and grilled corn. Machete marg is my favorite. Comes with watermelon cubes and it has a slight kick at the end. Very refreshing. The sea bass entree is light yet very flavorful. Salad is very citrusy so it pairs well with the fish. Fish was seasoned and cooked perfect. Churros with the sauces were a perfect dessert. We had 10 people in our party so the wait for the table was a little longer than usual and we were celebrating my sister's birthday. Iris was pur server and she was really patient with waiting on us. She even provided a lighter for the cake and to go containers without complaining on us barking orders at her. The restrooms were clean but very dark to match the dark ambiance of the restaurant. I was a little sad we did not get a kids menu but my daughter liked the roasted chicken with queso. I had the same same. The classic margarita was great and strong. I've been to this location two times. Once on a Saturday and most recently on a Sunday. Both times were very good. Actually, the other locations are just as great. The food is always good and the service is great. I like the rooftop appeal of this location. But other than that I don't feel there's anything super stand-outish to this location. The energy is good. It's not too loud but it feels vibrant. We ordered from the brunch menu which felt kind of limited but the server said that's all they were serving on the Sunday we went. The man got carne asada tacos. I got a caesar salad (which came out about one minute before our main meals) and seafood fajitas - lobster tail, scallops and shrimp. Both were delicious. Decided to stop by Mexican Sugar tonight to cap off the weekend. We'd been here in the past and visited the one in Irving. The menu has changed quite a bit. It's smaller than before. First, let me start by saying our waiter was the best. 5 star service. Checked on us frequently and made sure we had drinks and chips. Atmosphere was nice and one to mingle in. The chairs we sat in were like patio chairs, so uncomfortable. I'll start by saying that the food used to be really good. I guess the concept has changed and it's more commercial now. For starters we got the queso which was pretty good. The salsa they serve with the chips is very bland now, we asked for salt to give it some flavor. My husband got the Chicken Mole enchiladas and I got the Hamburguesa. The burger was okay, but I've had better. Yuka fries were good. That Chicken Mole plate was terrible. The mole was super pasty and bland, while the chicken tasted like something out of a fast food restaurant. Small chunks with an odd texture. The cilantro rice was just as bad and the beans were bland. Neither of us finished our meals. We really enjoyed this place in the past. This was our first time in a little over a year maybe, we won't be back. It's not worth the money spent. Again, service was excellent and atmosphere was nice. Food, not so much. Never again. Atmosphere: Located downtown just across the street from the Ritz-Carlton, Mexican Sugar has become a favorite spot for those looking for good Mexican food. It has two levels of seating with stairs leading up to the second level. Very nice dining tables/booths/chairs and plates. 1 Star Service: We had reservations (recommended) and were sat immediately upon arrival. Our waitress was awesome. She met every need we had and was happy to give recommendations on the menu. She was upbeat and legitimately happy to have us at her table. I did have one big gripe though. They sat us a table for two upstairs that was lined up right underneath a long vent from the air conditioner. It was in the 40s outside and the AC was blowing nonstop, right on top of our table. So we sat shivering through the whole meal, as they would not turn off the vent, and our food was immediately cold about 2 minutes after we received it. This was my only complaint, but it was enough to make me unsatisfied with our meal as cold food is not very pleasant to eat. 1 Star Food: As far as the taste of the food goes, it was fantastic. The queso and chips are both top-notch. My daughter ordered a Classic Margarita as well as the Machete Margarita. She praised both although she preferred the Classic. Her entree was the Mesquite Grilled Steak Enchiladas. Two very nice sized enchiladas. The two sauces, rojo and verde, were both very good and the steak was flavorful. I opted for the combination fajitas of chicken and carne asada. Both of the meats were very tasty and they actually provide plenty of grilled bell peppers and onions, which is my favorite part of fajitas. Neither of us cared too much for the cilantro-lime rice. We both love the combination of lime and cilantro but for some reason it just wasn't working in this dish. The black beans were good, albeit slightly bland, but not too bad. Was expecting a more bold flavor from them. 1.5 Stars Overall: We both loved the food, minus the rice, and would love to go back and have our meals while it's still hot off the grill, but alas we will have to live with the memory of good dishes that happened to be cold. Very happy with our waitress and rest of staff. 3.5 stars, but will round up to 4 as I expect the food would be much better if it were hot. read more

Summary: Service was extremely slow, food temperatures varied from appropriate to no warmth whatsoever, small portions. We arrived about 12 minutes past our reservation time Sunday evening. The first floor appeared relatively empty. When I gave the hostess my name, she requested we wait in the seating area, so she could figure something out. We waited for about five minutes before we were seated at a large table near the kitchen. It took about 10 minutes for a waitress to come by and ask if we wanted any drinks; water came about 5 minutes later and the alcohol 10 minutes after that. The wait time for our drinks and food seemed a bit excessive since there were only a few other tables in use on the first floor. We sat waiting for our food for close to an hour; it took about 20ish minutes to get the appetizers. The tastiest item on the menu was the ribeye fajitas. Juicy and a satisfying portion for one person. Ceviche: extremely citrusy and some pieces of the fish appeared to have remanentes of the skin (silvery shine) Arepas: not at all like traditional arepas. They were more like mini Mexican sopes. Not very flavorful and the barbacoa was not warm at all. Squash Quesadilla: the salsa was yummy, and the quesadilla had a good flavor Carne Asada Tacos: chewy Ribeye Fajitas: flavorful, lots of onions, good size piece of meat, extremely warm Yucca Fries: NOT WARM AT ALL. Crispy, but surprisingly not warm. Based on this experience, we will not be returning to the restaurant unfortunately. I wanted to love this place, but there wasn't anything on the menu that excused the wait time or that would bring me back! read more
