The calimari we ordered as an appetizer was probably the most tender and delicious either of us have ever had. And when our burgers arrived, I was so happy. It was exactly what I had set my mind on when selecting my birthday dinner experience. The blend of brisket and chuck was absolutely delicious, set atop a perfectly buttered toasted bun, with some crispy onion straws on top. And the fries... oh my! I rarely if ever eat fried food - so clearly this was my big day to completely go off my standard fare, but those fries had the perfect crunch and flavor. The game began, yet not a single television in the restaurant was showing it. Halftime came and went while the numerous screens throughout the establishment continued to display commercials and unrelated programming. Eventually, we gave up and began watching the match on our phones. What stood out most was that Flor genuinely cared. When she noticed us watching the game on our phones, she immediately stepped in, followed up yet again, and continued advocating on our behalf. She was attentive, professional, and clearly doing everything within her power to help. Had this review been based solely on her service, it would have been a completely different rating. After approximately 45 minutes, management finally changed one of the televisions. Unfortunately, they didn't verify the teams or match details and simply selected the wrong game entirely. It was clear that little attention had been paid to the actual request. What disappointed me most wasn't the fact that the game wasn't shown, it was the lack of follow-through. Multiple employees acknowledged the request, management was informed more than once, and there was ample opportunity to resolve the issue. Instead, there seemed to be very little urgency, communication, or attention to detail. With major international tournaments and the World Cup drawing closer, establishments that market themselves as destinations for soccer fans should be prepared to accommodate something as fundamental as showing the requested match, especially after confirming it beforehand. As for the food, it unfortunately did not redeem the experience. We only ordered appetizers, but they were underwhelming and forgettable. The one bright spot of the evening was Flor. She demonstrated the kind of customer service that keeps guests willing to give a place another chance. Management, however, failed to support her efforts. The blue fin tuna tostados were delightful and hands down the best dish we had. Ceviche mixto was excellent with a just a hint of heat. I would order these two appetizer dishes again. Main courses consisted of duck 2 ways, redfish with green mole and risotto, spring cavatelli, and grilled shrimp & pork belly. All were delicious and uniquely tasty with the exception of the duck. Along the walls are several prep stations where the staffs are rolling out tortillas, and preparing the carnitas throughout the day. It looked like a fast casual walk- up service, but it's actually a full serviced restaurant. Once you are led to your table, your server takes care of everything you need. The menu is pretty straight forward with carnitas being the main protein in many of combination plates. Instead of the typical chips and salsa, you start off with crispy pork rinds which was fun and that alone was a stand out. Carnitas was undeniable tender and juicy, but I wish the flavors were a bit bolder. The table salsa was decent but it did not enhance the dish, I kept wanting something with more heat for that extra kick. The food itself didn't leave a lasting impression I was hoping for, but I appreciate Los Cochinitos for preserving 67 years of tradition and bringing that piece of history to Houston.
