So, this will be my 3rd time ordering from Mezcal. The first time was physically in the store and the last 2 were online orders. There's a vast difference in ordering and enjoying a meal in the store versus delivery. The restaurant is very low key yet gives a unique dive bar feel to it. The staff are welcoming and the alcoholic drinks are made well. Be mindful when you order online or via an ordering app they deliver it themselves so, it will take 40-60mins and there's no way to track either . I ordered the birria tacos with elote, a side of guacamole and orchata. For the entire meal it came out to $27 The birria taco was very dry and chewy , the birria consome was spicy but not unbearable , the elote was perfect. In size and in taste and the guacamole while tiny was appropriate for the price and was delicious as well. The inconsistency with the food from in the restaurant versus online ordering is pretty drastic . I'd recommend going into the restaurant to eat to ensure the food is prepared to perfection. overall it was still a delicious meal and reasonably priced. hopefully in time they'll fix their delivery system and consistency of food. read more

I don't know why this place only has 3.6 stars but I'm so glad that didn't stop me from ordering lat night at 11 PM. I was so thankful they were open because I was starving and didn't want to eat fast food. I ordered online and picked up quickly. The food was amazing! This food is absolutely phenomenal I ordered it for take out. The steak Mexican quesadillas were so delicious and full of cheese. I was not a fan of the nachos they were very soggy but I imagine if I ate there they wouldn't be soggy. I also tasted the American steak quesadilla and that was delicious as well. I have to say the food is very expensive and I compared it to other restaurants nearby with the same menu and this restaurant charges $5-$8 extra a meal for the same kind of food. I can say Mezcal is the best place I have tried in Bayonne. It is always a good time to share, the atmosphere is nice and pleasant! The vibe is always on point and they open late and kitchen is open late as well! I hosted a birthday with ~30 people here and those working there really made it a party. They brought everyone free shots and were joining in on the fun. Came here and got seated quickly. The place is very nice, small, but cute. The lightening in here is not that strong and has a bar. Got the Al pastor tacos and I thought it was good. Full of flavor and packed with filling. The birria tacos also good, packed with flavor and meat in the taco. Paired super well with the broth. Living in Bayonne for almost a year now I haven't tried Mezcal but since my friend just moved to the town we decided to try it out for our first time! Reservations: I reserved a table for 6pm on a Wednesday. Reservations were quick and easy as I made one online. Ambiance: Outdoor dining only (COVID). There are two four-seater tables outside with umbrellas. When arriving, both tables had the reserved sign on it which was great since we technically did make a reservation. When you walk in the host greets you and asks you to place your order and pay before you sit at your table. There was only one employee making drinks, taking phone calls, placing orders for in-person customers, and bringing out the food. A lot for one person but he was nice about the wait for placing the order and receiving our food. Food/Drink: Since my friend and I were catching up we didn't notice how long it was taking until our hunger was getting the best of us. The host brought out complimentary chips and salsa and shortly after our food arrived. Our order arrived in styrofoam containers where I wish it was actual plates since we were outdoor dining but we understood the circumstances. The guacamole and chips were good, it did need a sprinkle of salt but nothing too crazy. You can order the guac spicy or not spicy. The portion you receive is generous; we definitely couldn't finish it all. As an entree, we ordered shrimp tacos which were pretty good! They used two soft tortillas on each taco in which you get three. The tortillas needed to be warmed and crispier as that would've made the tacos a ten. I never thought tacos could fill me up but their shrimp tacos definitely did! One thing I wish they had was bottled water; I think they ran out at the time but no biggie. Pricing: REASONABLE! Guac and chips ($10). Shrimp tacos ($10.50+) Parking: There's plenty of street parking. Fortunately, it's a light 10-minute walk for me. I will be back to try something different and update my review! Tips: Save 10% by placing your orders online. They're currently offering $2 margaritas with a $10 food purchase! We almost broke our teeth trying to eat the plantains. The steak was like chewing a belt. We couldn't eat either of them. The chicken was over cooked, dry and cold but was seasoned well. The fried shrimp and cheese were as decent as cold fried food could be; they would probably be tasty if they were fresh. We gave most of the meal to our dog. He seemed to like it. We've ordered food from Mezcal 3 times (2x pre Covid & 1x right now). They have excellent food and the quality is always great -- food and ingredients always tastes fresh. We got delivery and it arrived less than 45 mins after I ordered. The food was piping hot and so delicious I didn't even remember to take photos (and I ALWAYS take photos). We always order the tacos and burritos, and they also have a good deal for lunch specials. My only regret is that we haven't gotten to dine in their cute restaurant yet, but hopefully we can do that in the future! Pro tip: order directly from Mezcal's own website instead of Grubhub - you'll save 10% and also a bit on delivery fees! (Just remember to tip generously during Covid!) read more

First off, we walked in and asked for a menu since no one seated us and the woman behind the bar pointed that the menu was next to us. So umm okay we grabbed the menu and sat at the bar because there's a chalkboard sign indicating happy hour drinks. We asked the woman what were the happy hour drinks were and she said $2 shots and $5 margaritas so we ordered 2 margaritas and 2 shots. We offered her a shot and she declined. We also ordered the birria tacos they were not good instead they tasted bland. She didn't bother checking up on us and instead was focused and was wooed by some gentlemen. We finally got her attention, asked for the bill, and the woman charged us full price for shots and margaritas. What the fuck. I wish I didn't tip but we kindly gave the suggested amount. Unbelievable.... I had just reviewed another Mexican restaurant in town and mentioned I found a hair in the salsa. This time my daughter found 2 hairs in the salad and because I was certain my ten year old might have been joking I asked my adult friend to verify what we were seeing right before our eyes. I was in total denial! GROSS! I am also disappointed that other than the waitress asking if we wanted another salad after my daughter was already done eating her quesadillas, they did not have the courtesy to at a minimum discount our bill which would have been much more helpful. Offering another salad, which would have likely still had HAIR in it was not very helpful! Furthermore, the chicken in the quesadillas and the tostadas were ridiculously and INCREDIBLY salty too! I had a pleasant experience at Mezcal Kitchen. I recently began drinking mezcal so it was nice to go somewhere that knows a proper mezcal drink. I had the mezcal dream (which was a day special), Paloma and another I cannot remember the name of. The Paloma was my favorite; it uses grapefruit soda and a sugar rim. The flavors hold hands harmoniously! The drinks were phenomenal and the food was delicious. However, I will recommend to not order both the stuffed shrimp avocado and the shrimp seviche. Both are fantastic dishes but close in flavor. Overall, my experience was a positive one and I look forward to going back. The one thing I did wish, was for the staff to be just a bit more informed and ready to educate on mezcal. Though I must point out our server was beyond attentive. read more
